Background: Demodicosis is a parasitic dermatopathy often found in dogs and considered rare in felines. It is caused by the mite of the genus Demodex. In cats, it can be caused by 3 species: Demodex cati, Demodex gatoi, and another Demodex species not yet named. Demodicosis can be associated with systemic diseases, which can compromise the animal's immune system, as is the case of demodicosis caused by Demodex cati. The present case report describes 3 cases of demodicosis, 2 by D. cati and 1 by D. gatoi, with pruritic lesions and abrasions in different parts of the animals' bodies, but which showed improvement with common treatment. Cases: The first 2 cases refer to feline patients treated in Curitibanos and the third in Blumenau, both municipalities located in Santa Catarina. The first patient, a 6-year-old female, SRD, IVF/FeLV-negative, presented abrasions and alopecia in the cervical region, at the base of the auricle and submandibular region, with pruritus for 3 months. Skin scraping was performed revealing presence of Demodex cati. The second patient, a 11-year-old male, SRD, FIV-negative and FeLVpositive, presented alopecic lesions with mild pruritus, one on the dorsal region of the head and 2 others slightly oval on the tail. A skin scraping was performed for parasitological examination which demonstrated the presence of mites of the species Demodex cati. The third patient, a 10-month-old male Persian, IVF/FeLV-negative, had alopecic and pruritic lesions on the back and head near the auditory canal, as well as signs of external otitis. The lesions on the skin were scaly and presented a blackish appearance, with evolution of a few weeks. Skin scraping was performed for parasitological examination, confirming the presence of Demodex gatoi. In all cases, fungal cultures were negatives. For the 3 patients, fluralaner was used transdermally, as a pipette with a single application, and all showed complete improvement within 30 days after administration. Discussion: Demodicosis is considered a rare disease among felines and the literature suggests involvement when linked to immunosuppressive causes, such as viral diseases or systemic comorbidities. Still, it can become the cause of bacterial or fungal co-infections due to immunological impairment. In the 3 cases reported, only 1 patient was positive for FeLV. Parasitological examination of the skin by deep or superficial skin scraping, considered as the diagnostic method of choice for demodicosis, was performed in the 3 patients and demonstrated the presence of mites. Although the literature does not provide treatment considered to be of choice for felines, fluralaner was prescribed transdermally for the 3 patients reported here due to its practicality and prolonged time of action, administered in single application as antiparasitic therapy, achieving success and complete improvement up to 30 days after its use. The animals that presented co-infections were treated according to the type of infections they presented and their therapies of choice.

Background: Otitis is a frequent condition in dogs, with a multifactorial etiology covering primary causes, predisposing and perpetuating factors. It is characterized by an inflammatory process of structures that make up the auditory system, with prevalence data ranging from 15 to 20%, which can occur in any age group and without sex predisposition. According to the location, it can be classified as uni or bilateral, affecting the outer, middle and / or inner ear, the latter two being associated with neurological changes such as vestibulopathy, facial nerve paresis and Horner's syndrome. The morbidity and mortality of otitis media and internal may increase with delay in diagnosis, resulting in delay in the correct treatment, and the extension to brainstem is described in felines and considered rare in dogs. The present study aims to report an atypical case of otitis media and internal, with extension to the brain parenchyma in a brachycephalic dog. Case: A 3-year-old bitch French Bulldog was seen, weighing 12 kg, with a history of vomiting, apathy, nystagmus, ataxia and acute evolution hemiparesis. As a result of adoption, it was not known about the animal's morbid past. On special physical and clinical examination, depressed mental status, changes in postural reactions, nostril stenosis with unilateral mucopurulent nasal discharge, corneal ulcer, palpebral and labial ptosis, absence of eyelid reflex and spontaneous strabismus were observed, all of these findings observed on the left side of the face. No signs of otitis external to otoscopy were found. The clinical signs found characterize left facial nerve paresis and peripheral and central vestibulopathy. Otitis media / internal and meningoencephalitis were suspected. Hemogram, serum biochemistry (glucose, urea, creatinine, alanine aminotransferase, total proteins, albumin, globulin, alkaline phosphatase, gamma glutamyltransferase, phosphorus, total bilirubin, cholesterol and total calcium), urinalysis, rapid tests for erlichiosis, anaplasms , borreliosis, heartworm, distemper and leishmaniasis, CSF analysis, neurological panel performed by PCR (Polymerase Chain Reaction) that tested the animal for Bartonellosis, Lyme Disease (Borrelia burgdorferi), Blastomyces dermatitidis, Cryptococcus sp., Virus West Nile, Distemper, Toxoplasmosis, Neosporose and Coccidioides sp. using conjunctival swab, whole blood, urine and CSF samples. The samples were negative for all of these tests. As an image exam, brain magnetic resonance was performed. In the latter, otitis media and left internal was observed with extension of the lesion to the brain parenchyma. CSF analysis showed cytological changes compatible with a non-suppurative inflammatory process, mild pleocytosis with predominantly mononuclear leukocyte infiltrate. As a form of treatment, antibiotic therapy and total ablation of the auditory canal with lateral bulectomy were performed, showing good results with reduced clinical symptoms. Discussion: It is concluded that although the diagnosis of otitis media and internal with extension to brainstem is more common in cats, it should be included as a differential for central vestibular disorders in dogs, and that the diagnosis together with early and effective treatment are important, since that the evolution of the infection to the central nervous system represents a risk to the patient.

Background: Otitis is a severe inflammation of the skin of the auditory canal which can impact animals of all ages. Insheep, this disease can occur in isolated cases or in the entire flock. Laser photobiomodulation can be used in combination with medication or as single therapy and the effects are analgesia, modulation of the inflammatory process, edemareduction, tissue restoration and stimulation of local microcirculation. Antimicrobial photodynamic therapy stands out asa promising alternative to antimicrobial drugs for the treatment of localized infections. This study aimed to report the useof laser phototherapies on a sheep with bacterial otitis.Case: A case of bacterial otitis in a 4-year-old sheep, Dorper, was treated at the Veterinary Hospital of the State Universityof Santa Cruz. In the anamnesis, the owner reported that the patient presented crusts in the auricular pavilions, and hadbeen medicated with oxytetracycline 20%, administered intramuscularly, for two days and the crusts cleaned with iodine10%, but the animal did not present clinical improvement. On physical examination, the animal presented constant headswaying, edema of the ears, otalgia, enlarged parotid lymph nodes and ear wounds. No ear discharge was observed, andthe initial diagnosis was aural hematoma. The treatment prescribed was laser photobiomodulation for three consecutivedays. The lesions were irradiated with a diode laser with a power of 0.1 W, irradiance of 3.5 W/cm2, continuous emission, spot area of 0.028 cm2, wavelength of 808 nm, energy of 4J/point, and fluency/point of 142.8J/cm2, with seven pointson the external surface and four points on the internal surface of both ears. Two points were also targeted on the parotidlymph nodes with infrared laser (λ = 808 nm), with energy of 2J/point. On the fourth day of hospitalization, there was areduction in lesions, decreased edema and absence of pain and on the sixth day...

The aim of this study was to describe a case of inflammatory polyp in the middle ear of a cat and its surgical resolution through avulsion and mass traction after lateral approach. A female feline, two year old, was admitted at the Hospital Veterinário Professor Sylvio Barbosa Cardoso, presenting intense itching, pain and fetid discharge in the ear region. Physical examination revealed a nodule in the left middle ear region. Associated with this, the animal presented head tilt (inclination of the head to the affected side). Hematological examinations, skull radiography and mass cytology were requested. The animal was referred for polyp removal surgery. A skin incision was made under the palpable vertical ear canal. The cartilage was released to the level of the junction between the auricular and annular cartilages. With the help of a forceps, the polyp was grasped and gently rotated until completely removed from its origin. The cartilage and subcutaneous tissue were closed with 4-0 monofilament suture material and the skin was closed in a subdermal suture pattern using the same material. The piece was referred for histopathological examination, which confirmed the suspicion of inflammatory polyp by observing ciliated columnar epithelium. Using the TALA surgical technique (avulsion and traction after lateral approach) it was possible to obtain improvement of the clinical 3 picture of the referred animal, rapid postoperative recovery and without any complications resulting from the technique. This technique therefore proves satisfying, significantly improving the quality of life of the animal.

The most common clinical signs are erythema, pain on palpation, itching and oozing. In addition to the history and anamnesis, radiography, otoscopy and biopsy can assist in the diagnosis. The initial treatment aims to control the perpetuating factors, eliminate predisposing factors and control the underlying cause. In cases of recurrent chronic external otitis, stenosis of the ear canal, ear deformities, polyps and neoplasms, surgical treatment is indicated. The present work reports the case of a 13-year-old mixed breed canine, attended at the Veterinary Hospital of the Federal Rural University of the Semi-arid (UFERSA), with a foul odor in the ear, excess of dark colored cerumen, erythema, itching and acute pain palpating the base of the left ear. Through anamnesis, physical examination and complementary tests such as radiography, the animal was diagnosed with chronic otitis. Then, we opted for the surgical treatment of total ablation of the auditory canal (TECA), which consists of the removal of the vertical and horizontal ear canal, associated with lateral osteotomy of the tympanic bulla. The surgical procedure was effective in the treatment of chronic otitis unresponsive to drug treatment previously performed in the last five years, done intermittently by the tutor.

Background: Reconstructive surgery is an important area of veterinary surgery because it allows the reconstruction of large cutaneous defects in areas where a primary approach is not possible. Axial patterns flaps are composed by one direct cutaneous artery and vein, leading to a better blood supply with a good survival outcome. The angularis oris axial pattern buccal flap was introduced for correction of facial defects, but its versatility is not really explored in the existing literature. This article reports the use and complications of the angularis oris axial pattern buccal flap in six dogs, to treat defects in mandibular, temporal or labial regions. Cases: Five mixed breed dogs and one Labrador, with age between 4 and 9-year-old were submitted for surgery and the angularis oris axial pattern buccal flap was used to close the different defects. Causes of defect included a lesion caused by myiasis in three of the dogs, and tumoral removal in the other three, where two were mast cell tumors and one a keratinizing basal cell carcinoma. The regions affected included rostral mandible with oral mucosa, intermandibular region, temporal region and upper lip. Before flap confection the tissue was cleaned, resected and prepared properly, according to each cause of lesion. The flap was made with two parallel incisions, which center was usually the labial commissure, with the dorsal limits at the ventral aspect of the zygomatic arch, and the ventral incision on the ventral aspect of the mandibular ramus. Caudal extension was based on the length needed for surgical closure, but stained between the vertical auditory canal or up to atlas wing. Suture size and pattern depend the region and patient size. Patients were observed closely for any complication in the surgical site. From the six dogs presented here, five got some complications in the surgical site, including: lymphedema (2), suture dehiscence (4) and hematoma (1); however...

The objectives of the study was evaluated the clinical conditions of the ear canal and the tympanic membrane (TM) through otoscopic examination, correlating the use of ceruminolytics and topical solutions with visualization of the structures mentioned above. Otoscopic examinations were performed on 20 adult dogs, random breeded, divided into three groups. Control Group or I (GI): five animals didn’t receive any type of prior treatment to the otoscopic examination; Group II (GII): 10 dogs received bilateral treatment with ceruminolytic in the three days before the exams; Group III (GIII): five dogs received the same treatment as GII, adding bilateral lavage of the ears with physiological solution at room temperature (25 ºC) at the time of examination. The ear canal and TM were evaluated, and physical and chemical restraints were performed. In the evaluation of the ear was found fetid odor in 5.0% of the dogs. In the ear canal, hyperemia was observed in 40.0%, stenosis in 20.0% and bloody exudate in 10.0% of the dogs. Total or partial obstructions of the ear canal due to excess cerumen represented 42.5% and 25.0% of the ears; respectively. MT was observed in 45.0% of the dogs, 60% of the animals belonging to GI, 50.0% of GII and 20.0% of GIII. When associated with hyperemia in the ear canal, visualization of TM was possible in 37.5% and in cases of stenosis was visualized in only 25.0% of dogs. It was concluded that the excess of cerumen and stenosis of the ear canal were the clinical conditions that most interfered in the visualization of the structures and limited the use of otoscopic examination as diagnostic method. The use of topical solutions in the treatment prior to the otological examination did not demonstrate a gain in the TM of the dogs, requiring improvements in the techniques used.

In this case report the authors describe the presence of nodules in the concave pinna of a five years-old male Persian cat brought to veterinary clinic care in Rio de Janeiro in 2015, diagnosed by histopathology as ceruminous cystomatosis. As it is an uncommon disorder of unknown etiology and easy treatment, the authors aim to elucidate the main clinical signs associated and treatment used. The ablation of cysts was performed withan electric bistoury and no recurrency was reported within three years. It is suggested that benign cysts can progress to malignancy, besides, lesions can disrupt normal self-cleaning of the auditory canal leading to secondary otitis externa by microbial proliferation.(AU)

The objective of this study was to characterize genotypically Malassezia spp. isolated from the external ear canal of healthy horses. Fifty-five horses, 39 (70.9%) males and 16 (29.1%) females, from different breeds and adults were studied. External ear canals were cleaned and a sterile cotton swab was introduced to collect cerumen. A total of 110 samples were cultured into Dixon medium and were incubated at 32 °C for up to 15 days. Macro- and micromorphology and phenotypic identification were performed. DNA was extracted, strains were submitted to polymerase chain reaction technique, and the products obtained were submitted to Restriction Fragment Length Polymorphism using the restriction enzymes BstCI and HhaI. Strains were sent off to genetic sequencing of the regions 26S rDNA D1/D2 and ITS1-5.8S-ITS2 rDNA. Malassezia spp. were isolated from 33/55 (60%) animals and 52/110 (47%) ear canals. No growth on Sabouraud dextrose agar was observed, confirming the lipid dependence of all strains. Polymerase chain reaction-Restriction fragment length polymorphism permitted the molecular identification of Malassezia nana - 42/52 (81%) and Malassezia slooffiae - 10/52 (19%). Sequencing confirmed RFLP identification. It was surprising that M. nana represented over 80% of the strains and no Malassezia equina was isolated in this study, differing from what was expected.(AU)

This paper describes an 11-month-old female Pinscher dog, with anatomical changes of the ear on the right side. After physical exam, clinical and radiographic diagnosis of microtia with ear canal atresia on the right side was made. As the animal did not show any signs of vestibular system changes or ear infections, the veterinarians opted for monitoring the patient. Microtia, characterized by the partial or complete hypoplasia of pina, as well as other abnormalities of ear canal are rarely described in veterinary medicine. As far as the author´s knowledge by literature review carried out, this is the first report of a dog with microtia and congenital ear canal atresia not associated with vestibular syndrome in Brazil.(AU)

This study aimed to describe the occurrence of parasitic otitis caused by Rhabditis blumi in dairy cattle of the Gir race from a farm in northern Brazil. Forty-two samples were collected from cattle by swab washed from the external auditory canal (EAC). On clinical examination, in 71.4% (30/42) of the cattle the parasite was found in the cerumen of the ear canal, along with alopecia of head and hump caused by discomfort and itching of the auricular region. At microscopic analysis of material from the conjunctival sac the parasite was found in 90% (9/10) of the evaluated cattle. In addition, 9.5% (4/42) of the cattle showed nervous symptoms, such as mild to moderate rotation of the head, apathy, flaccid lips and unilateral ptosis, change in chewing and food accumulation in the oral cavity. Thirty cattle positive for Rhabditis spp. were randomly divided into three groups of 10 animals each: (G1) Cattle Control, (G2) Cattle treated with ivermectin 1% pour-on, and (G3) Cattle undergoing wash of the external auditory canal (EAC). Each treatment was repeated three times with intervals of seven days. In G1, 10 cattle remained infected throughout the study. In G2, 20% of the cattle were negative after the first two treatments, however were positive at the third evaluation. In G3, all cattle remained positive, but with decrease in parasite load. Identification by molecular analysis of amplified fragments through the expansion D2/D3 28S rDNA confirmed the presence of only Rhabditis blumi. Based on clinical, morphologic and molecular examination, it appears to be the first report of the occurrence of R. blumi infection in Gir cattle in the State of Pará, due to the purchase of cattle from areas where parasitic otitis has been diagnosed, as from Minas Gerais, to produce crossbred animals (Gir x Holstein). This emphasizes the importance of prior clinical examination by the veterinary service in order to transfer only healthy animals to other properties or regions. This appears also to be the first report on R. blumi infection of the conjunctival sac in cattle. Treatment with ivermectin in G2 did not produce clinical improvement.(AU)
