Resumo

Background: The modulation of heart rate by autonomic nervous system may be evaluated by the heart rate variability(HRV), which illustrates the fluctuations between RR intervals. To evaluate this analysis, the intervals between 2 QRScomplexes are measured. In general, high HRV values are expected in healthy individuals; otherwise, low values are indicative of organism dysfunction. Studies conducted in healthy humans show that HRV suffers reduction with ageing andthat there is autonomic immaturity in neonates. The aim of this study was to describe the characteristic pattern of cardiacautonomic behavior in healthy dogs in different age groups through short-term HRV analysis.Materials, Methods & Results: A total of 87 healthy dogs were studied. HRV was analyzed in time and frequency domain,using Holter and heart rate monitor. It was observed that puppies (below one year old) presented a lower parasympatheticpredominance and, consequently, lower HRV values on time domain (SDNN, PNN50% e RMSSD) compared to the other2 groups and on frequency domain (LF, HF and LF/HF) compared to the adult animals group (between 1 and 7-year-old),which presented higher HRV values when compared to the other groups. Elderly dogs (over 8-year-old) exhibited a naturaltendency to decrease cardiac parasympathetic HRV indexes.Discussion: The use of the HRV method as a prognostic index and as an arrhythmogenic marker for various canine heartdiseases presents interesting perspectives. Resumo

Cardiac rhythm disorders are diagnosed through electrocardiography, which is an important tool to investigate other systemic conditions that may be related to the cardiac conduction system. Cardiac regulation is controlled by the autonomic nervous system, and in dogs, it is mainly modulated by a parasympathetic action exerted by the vagus nerve, called vagal tone. Increased vagal tone can occur physiologically or pathologically, leading to the occurrence of bradyarrhythmias. However, some studies report that airway diseases can exacerbate this tone, together with the reduction of sympathetic pathway activities. This study aimed to analyze the cardiac rhythms in dogs presenting with electrocardiographic alterations related to respiratory diseases, in connection with the exacerbation of vagal tone. Medical records of animals whose diagnoses involved at least one respiratory condition and who underwent electrocardiographic assessment between March 2017 to March 2021 were compiled. Data obtained were compiled in Microsoft Excel®1 spreadsheets and evaluated using descriptive statistics through the BioEstat®2 software. Pearson's correlation was used for quantitative data. A correlation between autonomic regulation and vagal exacerbation was observed in cases with obstructive airways diseases.(AU)


Os distúrbios do ritmo cardíaco são diagnosticados por meio da eletrocardiografia, que é uma importante ferra-menta para investigar outras condições sistêmicas que podem estar relacionadas ao sistema de condução cardíaco. A regulação cardíaca é controlada pelo sistema nervoso autônomo e, em cães, é modulada principalmente pela ação parassimpática exer-cida pelo nervo vago, denominada tônus vagal. O aumento do tônus vagal pode ocorrer fisiologicamente ou patologicamente, levando à ocorrência de bradiarritmias. No entanto, alguns estudos relatam que as doenças das vias aéreas podem exacerbar esse tônus, juntamente com a redução das atividades das vias simpáticas. Este estudo teve como objetivo analisar os ritmos cardíacos em cães com alterações eletrocardiográficas relacionadas a doenças respiratórias, relacionadas à exacerbação do tônus vagal. Foram compilados os prontuários dos animais cujos diagnósticos envolvessem pelo menos uma condição respiratória e que realizaram avaliação eletrocardiográfica, no período entre março de 2017 a março de 2021. Os dados obtidos foram com-pilados em planilhas do Microsoft Excel®1 e avaliados por meio de estatística descritiva por meio do software BioEstat®2. A correlação de Pearson foi usada para dados quantitativos. Foi observada correlação entre regulação autonômica e exacerbação vagal em casos com doenças obstrutivas das vias aéreas.(AU)

Resumo

Purpose To evaluate the influence of autonomic vagal and splenic activities on renal histomorphometric aspects in obese rats. Methods Thirty male Wistar rats were used, of which, 24 received subcutaneous injections of monosodium glutamate (MSG) during the first 5 days of life (4 g/kg body weight) and six control animals received injections of saline solution (CON). Five experimental groups were organized (n = 6/group): falsely-operated control (CON-FO); falsely-operated obese (MSG-FO); vagotomized obese (MSG-VAG); splenectomized obese (MSG-SPL); vagotomized and splenectomized obese (MSG-VAG-SPL). Results The MSG-FO group animals showed a significant reduction in body weight and nasal-anal length when compared to CON-FO group animals (p 0.05). The MSG-VAG-SPL group showed significant reduced in most biometric parameters associated with obesity. Falsely-operated obese animals showed a significant reduction in renal weight, glomerular diameters, glomerular tuff and capsule areas and Bowmans space compared to CON-FO group animals (p < 0.05). There was a significant reduction in diameter, glomerular tuft and capsule areas, and Bowmans space in MSG-VAG, MSG-SPL, MSG-VAG-SPL groups when compared to the MSG-FO group. Conclusions Vagotomy associated with splenectomy induces a reduction in the adiposity and causes histological changes in the kidney of obese rats.(AU)

Background: Peripheral neuropathies result in sensory, motor or autonomic dysfunctions due to impairment of peripheral spinal or cranial nerves. Neoplasms such as lymphoma are cited as one of the many aetiological causes and it mayaffect the nerve directly, by compression, or indirectly (paraneoplastic) by remote action of the neoplasm located in anextra-neural site. This study aimed to report two cases of cranial nerve neuropathy (trigeminal and facial) associated withcanine lymphoma, contributing to a better understanding of its paraneoplastic effects on the nervous system, as well asthe diagnosis and treatment of these conditions.Cases: Two cases of canine lymphoma associated with possible signs of paraneoplastic peripheral neuropathy were attendedat the Veterinary Hospital from the Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais (HV UFMG). Case 1. A spayed mixed breedbitch, with lethargy and unilateral exophthalmos. Brain computed tomography revealed a retrobulbar mass and cytology wasdiagnostic for extranodal lymphoma. Subsequent to computed tomography, the dog was presented with hypotrophy of thefacial musculature and difficulty in grasping food, consistent with trigeminal nerve palsy, which resolved after institutionof the 19-week chemotherapy protocol from the University of Wisconsin. Nevertheless, disease reccurred and a rescueprotocol was initiated. Case 2. A female Dalmatian, spayed, was diagnosed with multicentric lymphoma, after cytologyof the left mandibular lymph node. Chemotherapy was initiated with the same protocol of the previous case. However,the disease progressed and it was observed facial asymmetry with ptosis of the left eyelid, pina and lips, in addition todifficulty in grasping food, suggesting facial and trigeminal cranial nerve palsy. Background: Hypothyroidism is an endocrine disease that leads to a reduction in the hormones thyroxine (T3) and triiodothyronine (T4), which therapy with levothyroxine restores the clinical signs related to the metabolic rate. Due to the influence of thyroid hormones on the heart, which is under the constant influence of the autonomic nervous system (ANS), dogs with hypothyroidism can develop bradycardia, arrhythmia, and dysautonomia. Heart rate variability (HRV) assesses autonomic modulation by the Holter method, which is scarce in dogs. We aimed to report the cardiac and autonomic effects of the primary hypothyroidism untreated and treated with levothyroxine in a canine case by Holter monitoring. Case: A 7-year-old female Dalmatian, weighing 36 kg, was referred for clinical evaluation due to apathy, weight gain, low hair quality, and lethargy. On physical examination, alopecic lesions on the hind limbs and tail, as well as bradycardia with a heart rate (HR) of 40-50 beats per minute (bpm) were observed, in addition to a 3/6 mitral murmur and 2/6 tricuspid murmur. Given the suspicion of thyroid gland disorder, the blood hormonal measurement revealed an increase in thyroidstimulating hormone (TSH; 0.65 ng/mL) and a decrease in free T4 (0.11 ng/mL) and total T4 (0.44 ng/mL), confirming primary hypothyroidism. Therapy was started with a minimum dose of levothyroxine (0.913 mg, every 12 h), which clinical signs were restored in 5 months of treatment, with weight loss, hair growth, and active behavior. To assess the impact of untreated and treated hypothyroidism on the patient’s ANS, a Holter monitoring exam was performed for 24 h before and after therapy. The aim of this study was to describe the normal values for maternal, fetal and neonatal heart rate (HR) and heart rate variability (HRV) indexes in the time domain (standard deviation of beat-to-beat interval - SDNN; root mean square of successive beat-to-beat differences - RMSSD) and the frequency domain (low frequency - LF; high frequency - HF; relationship between low and high frequency - LF/HF) in 23 Holstein cows, 23 fetuses and 18 neonates during the perinatal period. HR and HRV were calculated by fetomaternal electrocardiography (ECG). Fetomaternal measurements were taken six times prepartum (between days 234 and 279 of pregnancy) and measurements were taken in neonates six times after calving (after birth and five times weekly). HR, time and frequency domain were analyzed. No significant changes in maternal, fetal beat-to-beat interval (RR interval) or HR were found. In maternal variables, SDNN decreased significantly from 38.08±2.6ms (day 14 before calving) to 23.7±2.5ms (day 1 after calving) (p<0.05), but the RMSSD did not change significantly. HR and RR interval of calf differed statistically from the day before delivery (163±7.5bpm; 381±24.2ms) to the day after calving (131±5bpm; 472±16.2ms). Time variables (SDNN and RMSSD) and the frequency-domain variables (LF and HF) were significantly different (p<0.05) between fetal and neonatal stages. Reductions in the values of SDNN and RMSSD can reflect a sympathetic dominance. After calving, the increase in HF and decrease in LF variables can indicate activation of the vagal nerve followed by heart and respiratory modulation.(AU)


O objetivo deste estudo foi descrever os valores normais para os índices de frequência cardíaca (FC) materna, fetal e neonatal e de variabilidade da frequência cardíaca (VFC) no domínio do tempo (desvio padrão do intervalo batimento a batimento, SDNN; raiz quadrada média de sucessivas diferenças de batimento a batimento, RMSSD) e do domínio da frequência (baixa frequência, LF; alta frequência, HF; relação entre baixa e alta frequência, LF/HF) em 23 vacas Holandesas, 23 fetos e 18 neonatos durante o período perinatal. A FC e a VFC foram calculadas por eletrocardiografia materno-fetal. As medidas materno-fetais foram realizadas seis vezes antes do parto (entre os dias 234 e 279 de gestação) as medidas neonatais foram realizadas seis vezes após o parto (um dia após nascimento e semanalmente, durante cinco semanas). FC, e variáveis no domínio do tempo e de frequência foram analisadas. Não foram encontradas alterações significativas na FC e no intervalo de batimento para batimento (intervalo RR) materno e fetal. Nas variáveis maternas, o SDNN diminuiu significativamente de 38,08±2,6ms (dia 14 antes do parto) para 23,7±2,5ms (dia 1 após o parto) (p<0,05), mas o RMSSD não alterou significativamente. A FC e o intervalo e RR do bezerro diferiram estatisticamente a partir de um dia antes do parto (163±7,5bpm, 381±24,2ms) até o dia seguinte ao parto (131±5bpm, 472±16,2ms). As variáveis de tempo (SDNN e RMSSD) e as variáveis de domínio de frequência (LF e HF) foram significativamente diferentes (p<0,05) entre os momentos fetal e neonatal. As reduções nos valores de SDNN e RMSSD podem refletir domínio simpático. Background: Thyroid hormones have important effects on the cardiovascular system, of which the main ones are the in-crease in the heart response to the autonomic sympathetic nervous system. Heart rate variability is a non-invasive method of assessing autonomic heart modulation, thus being an important form of evaluation in patients with thyroid dysfunctions. This study aimed to report electrocardiographic and heart rate variability data of a dog with hypothyroidism that presented a parasympathetic dysfunction.Case:A 7-year-old female Dalmatian dog was admitted for clinical evaluation in Fortaleza, Brazil. According to the owner, she had been apathetic for a year, had gained weight, always had a sad expression, and her hair was generally brittle and opaque. On physical examination, skin lesions were observed at the end of the spine, extending to the tail region, with the latter showing total alopecia. Low T4 levels confirmed the diagnosis of primary hypothyroidism. Then, a 24-h Holter monitoring was performed, which showed that the animal had sinus arrhythmia associated with moments of second-degree sinoatrial block and rare moments of sinus tachycardia. In addition, moments of premature multifocal ventricular extra-systoles and 1st-degree atrioventricular block were observed.Based on the Holter results, heart rate variability (HRV) was calculated. Regarding the HRV in the frequency domain, 32.16 was obtained in the low frequency (LF) band, 67.84 in the high frequency (HF) band, and the LF / HF ratio was 0.46, with a total power of 5205. As for the HRV in the time domain, RMSSD was 117, pNN50 was 62.64 and SDNN was 384. In Brazil, the scorpion species responsible for most severe incidents belong to the Tityus genus and, among this group, T. serrulatus, T. bahiensis, T. stigmurus and T. obscurus are the most dangerous ones. Other species such as T. metuendus, T. silvestres, T. brazilae, T. confluens, T. costatus, T. fasciolatus and T. neglectus are also found in the country, but the incidence and severity of accidents caused by them are lower. The main effects caused by scorpion venoms - such as myocardial damage, cardiac arrhythmias, pulmonary edema and shock - are mainly due to the release of mediators from the autonomic nervous system. On the other hand, some evidence show the participation of the central nervous system and inflammatory response in the process. The participation of the central nervous system in envenoming has always been questioned. Some authors claim that the central effects would be a consequence of peripheral stimulation and would be the result, not the cause, of the envenoming process. Because, they say, at least in adult individuals, the venom would be unable to cross the blood-brain barrier. In contrast, there is some evidence showing the direct participation of the central nervous system in the envenoming process. This review summarizes the major findings on the effects of Brazilian scorpion venoms on the central nervous system, both clinically and experimentally. Most of the studies have been performed with T. serrulatus and T. bahiensis. Little information is available regarding the other Brazilian Tityus species.(AU)

Resumo

Purpose: To evaluate the toxicity of Erbitux as well as its biosimilar APZ001 antibody (APZ001) in pre-clinical animal models including mice, rabbits and cynomolgus monkeys. Methods: We performed analysis of normal behavior activity, autonomic and non-autonomic nervous functions, nervous-muscle functions, nervous excitability and sensorimotor functions on CD-1 mice. Subsequently, we studied that effects of APZ001 and Erbitux on respiratory system, cardiovascular system and kidney in Cynomolgus monkey models and performed local tolerance experiments on New Zealand rabbits. Results: The comparisons between APZ001 and Erbitux showed no significant differences in mice autonomic nervous system, nervous muscle functions, non-autonomic nervous functions, nervous excitability and sensorimotor functions between treated and untreated group (p>0.05). APZ001 and Erbitux showed negative effect on CD-1 mice in the present of pentobarbital sodium anesthesia (p>0.05). Single administrations of high, medium or low doses of APZ001 did not lead to monkey urine volume alterations (p>0.05). In human tissues, APZ001 and Erbitux showed positive signals in endocardium, lung type II alveolar epithelial cell and surrounding vessels, but showed negative results in kidney and liver tissues. No hemolysis phenomenon and serious side-effects in vessels and muscles were observed in rabbits when administrated with APZ001 and Erbitux respectively. Conclusion: The safety comparisons between APZ001 antibody and Erbitux showed that these two antibodies showed highly similarities in mice, rabbits and cynomolgus monkey animal models in consideration of pharmaceutical effects, indicating APZ001 might be a suitable substitute for Erbitux.(AU)

ABSTRACT: Claviceps purpurea is the fungus associated with ergotism. Ergotism is a disease caused by the ingestion of esclerodios called ergot, which contains alkaloids that act on dopaminergic and adrenergic receptors, causing seratoninergic effect on blood vessels, smooth muscles and central nervous and autonomic system. The present study describes epidemiological data, clinical signs and lesions of a bovine cattle disease characterized by hyperthermia, tachycardia, tachypnea and injuries in the coronary band of the hooves. Initially the cause was attributed to the fungus Claviceps purpurea. Between 2000 and 2014, 13 outbreaks were described, being three of distermic form, seven of gangrenous and three of the convulsive form. However, in five out of the seven of the gangrenous form outbreaks, it has been observed a high incidence of smut grass (Sporobolus indicus) inflorescences infected by a blackened fungus, classified as Bipolaris sp., in the places where the bovine grazed. The disease was reproduced experimentally by administration of inflorescences of smut grass contaminated by Bipolaris sp. Five bovine received daily doses of 0.1g/kg, 0.2g/kg, 0.2g/kg, 0.26g/kg and 0.34g/kg during 4, 7, 9, 30 and 30 days respectively. After three to seven days of eating contaminated inflorescences four cattle had diarrhea, tachycardia, tachypnea and intermittent hyperthermia. These clinical signs happened on the warmest days and during the warmest temperatures of the day. A bovine showed hyperemia in the coronary band of the hoof and loss of tail tip hair. According to data obtained during the experimental reproduction, smut grass contaminated by Bipolaris sp. can cause hyperthermia, tachycardia, tachypnea, injuries in the coronary band of the hoof and loss of the tail tip hair in bovine cattle.


RESUMO: Claviceps purpurea é o fungo associado ao ergotismo. Esta é uma enfermidade causada pela ingestão de escleródios chamados de ergot, que contém alcalóides que atuam em receptores adrenérgicos, dopaminérgicos e seratoninérgicos causando efeito direto em vasos sanguíneos, musculatura lisa e sistema nervoso central e autônomo. Descrevem-se dados epidemiológicos, sinais clínicos e lesões de uma enfermidade de bovinos caracterizada por hipertermia, taquicardia, taquipneia e ulcerações na coroa do casco de bovinos. Entre 2000 e 2014 foram diagnosticados 13 surtos, três da forma distérmica, sete da forma gangrenosa e três da forma convulsiva. Porém, em cinco destes sete surtos, nos locais onde esses animais pastoreavam havia alta incidência de inflorescências de Sporobolus indicus conhecido como capim-mourão, infectadas por um fungo com coloração enegrecida, identificado como Bipolaris sp. A enfermidade foi reproduzida experimentalmente em cinco bovinos com a administração destas inflorescências. Os bovinos em experimentação receberam inflorescências de S. indicus respectivamente nas doses diárias de 0,1g/kg, 0,2g/kg, 0,2g/kg, 0,26g/kg e 0,34g/kg por um período de 4, 7, 9 e 30 dias. Após três a sete dias de ingestão das inflorescências infectadas, quatro dos cinco bovinos apresentaram diarreia e manifestaram taquicardia, taquipneia e hipertermia em algum período durante a ingestão. Estes sinais coincidiram com os dias mais quentes deste período. Um bovino manifestou hiperemia na coroa do casco e perda de pêlos da extremidade da cauda. Baseado na reprodução experimental é possível afirmar que o capim Sporobolus indicus infectado pelo fungo Bipolaris sp é capaz de causar diarreia, hipertermia, taquicardia, taquipneia, hiperemia na coroa do casco e perda de pêlos da extremidade da cauda.

Ocorreram diferenças significativas na frequência cardíaca fetal (FCF) no período avaliado, porém os índices de VFC fetais não se alteraram. Não foram encontradas diferenças significativas nos índices de VFC materna. A média da FCF diminuiu significativamente dos 15 para sete dias do pré-parto (95,6±11,4 bpm; 83,1±12,6, respectivamente), entretanto os índices de VFC fetal não diminuíram. Os resultados obtidos da VFC fetal e neonatal deste estudo, quando comparados aos maternos, indicaram predomínio parassimpático durante a fase fetal e, simpático durante a neonatal, até a terceira e/ou quarta semanas de idade, momento no qual se inicia o equilíbrio entre os dois sistemas.(AU)
