Parasites are important components of ecosystems and may contribute to the ecological aspects of their hosts and indicate the integrity of their environment. To identify the gastrointestinal helminths of the South American fur seal, Arctocephalus australis, 52 animals found dead on the Rio Grande do Sul coast, Southern Brazil, were necropsied. All studied animals were parasitized, and 104,670 specimens of helminths from three phyla and 14 taxa were collected. Adult specimens represented five of the identified species: Contracaecum ogmorhini, Adenocephalus pacificus, Stephanoprora uruguayense, Ascocotyle (Phagicola) longa, and Corynosoma australe; and one of the identified genera: Strongyloides sp. Immature forms represented the other eight taxa: Anisakidae gen. sp., Anisakis sp., Pseudoterranova sp., Contracaecum sp., Tetrabothriidae gen. sp., Cestoda gen. sp., Corynosoma cetaceum, and Bolbosoma turbinella. The acanthocephalan C. australe was the most prevalent and abundant parasite, whereas Strongyloides sp. had the highest intensity. This is the first record of the nematode Anisakis sp., digenean S. uruguayense, and acanthocephalan B. turbinella in this host. Trophic generalist species such as A. australis can be good indicators of the composition of the helminth fauna of their ecosystems, indicating the presence of zoonotic parasites transmitted by the consumption of fish.(AU)

We studied the diet of non-breeding male Antarctic fur Seals Arctocephalus gazella (Peters, 1875) at two different localities of the South Shetland Islands: Stranger Point, King George Island/Isla 25 de Mayo and Duthoit Point, Nelson Island, by the analysis of 65 faecal samples collected in February 2012. Overall, Antarctic krill Euphausia superba (Dana, 1850) and fish were the main prey taxa followed by penguins and cephalopods. Myctophids were dominant among fish; Gymnoscopelus nicholsi (Gilbert, 1911) was the most important prey species at both sampling sites, followed by Electrona antarctica (Gunther, 1878) at Stranger Point and by the nototheniid Pleuragramma antarctica (Boulenger, 1902) at Duthoit Point. The relative similarity found in the dietary composition of fur seals from both locations suggest they might have been sharing common feeding areas. Our results were compared with those reported in the literature for different localities of the South Shetland Islands and the Scotia Sea region. The absence of formerly harvested demersal notothenioid species in the diet of fur seals may reflect the negative impact that commercial fisheries had on some fish populations and supports the importance of implementing long-term monitoring studies on the feeding habits of A. gazella in the area.(AU)

The brachioradialis is an important muscle that acts in the external rotation of the forearm (supination). However, its occurrence is controversial and little studied in the order Carnivora. Thus, this study investigates the occurrence and anatomo-functional arrangement of this muscle in wild carnivorans species. Fifty-eight thoracic limbs of specimens from species of Canidae, Procyonidae, Mustelidae and Felidae were dissected. Measurements of the length of the muscle (ML), the length of the forearm (FL), latero-medial width of the muscle (MW) and the lateral-medial diameter of the forearm (FD) were obtained to establish the ratios MW/FD and ML/FL in order to investigate the relative proportion of the muscle in relation to the forearm of each species. The brachioradialis muscle was identified in all species, although it was unilaterally or bilaterally absent in some canid individuals. The ratios demonstrated significant differences in the anatomical proportions among the families, with greater functional importance in the mustelids, procyonids, and felids because of a set of elaborate movements in the thoracic limb of representatives of these families when compared to canids.

Seis em formas adultas: Contracaecum ogmorhini, Strongyloides sp., Adenocephalus pacificus, Stephanoprora uruguayense e Ascocotyle (Phagicola) longa e Corynosoma australe, e oito em formas imaturas: Anisakidae gen. sp., Anisakis sp., Pseudoterranova sp., Contracaecum sp., Tetrabothriidae gen. sp., Cestoda gen. sp., Corynosoma cetaceum e Bolbosoma turbinella.

Corynosoma australe was the most prevalent (100%) and abundant (1716) parasite, while Strongyloides sp. was the one with the highest mean parasite intensity (8520). The nematode Anisakis sp., the digenetic Stephanoprora uruguayense and the acanthocephalan Bolbosoma turbinella were recorded for the first time in this host. The helminthfauna found in the present study was similar to that described in Uruguay, where most of the reproductive colonies of this species are found in the Western South Atlantic. Species with generalist habits such as A. australis can be good indicators of the composition of helmintofauna in the ecosystems they are part of, sgnaling the presence of zoonotic parasites transmitted by the consumption of fish.

The South American sea lion, Otaria flavescens (Shaw, 1800) population is steadily expanding along the Patagonian coast of Argentina in the last decades. However, little is known about the feeding ecology of the species in the area. The aim of this study was to analyze the food habits of O. flavescens from 91 scats collected at Río Negro province, during the winter and spring of 2005. Fish occurred in 96% of scats containing prey remains, followed by cephalopods (26%). Raneya brasiliensis (Kaup, 1856) was the most frequent and abundant species occurring in 58.6% of samples and constituting almost 50% of fish predated. Second in importance were Porichthys porosissimus (Cuvier, 1829) and Cynoscion guatucupa (Cuvier, 1830) in terms of occurrence (%FO 20.7) and numbers (29.6%) respectively. The squid Loligo gahi (d'Orbigny, 1835) was the most frequent cephalopod prey (42.1%), whereas Octopus tehuelchus (d'Orbigny, 1834) was the most abundant (77%). The higher amount and diversity of prey found in the spring in comparison with the winter season might be related to a higher feeding activity of seals or to a seasonal increase in food availability in the area.(AU)

Cases of dental agenesis, supernumerary teeth and dental losses are presented in three species of South American Otariids: Arctocephalus australis (Zimmermann, 1783), A. tropicalis (Gray, 1872) and Otaria flavescens (Shaw, 1800). For the first time, congenital and acquired dental anomalies were comparatively diagnosed in skull samples from southern Brazil and nearby areas. The skulls and mandibles were accessed in the scientific collection of mammals of the Federal University of Santa Catarina, southern Brazil. Agenesis was found only among maxillary post-canine teeth, especially the distal ones (PC/6), due to an evolutionary trend towards reduction of the number of post-canine teeth in this family. Maxillary and mandibular supernumerary teeth were found in A. australis and A. tropicalis, but their positioning is unrelated to cases regarding phylogenetic and evolutionary implications. Dental losses were found in all species and different stages of alveolar obliteration suggest that this process is common in Otariids and does not affect their survival. The investigation of congenital and acquired dental anomalies in pinnipeds can provide information on dental formula evolution in Pinnipeds and in the phylogenetic relationships among Carnivora.

Various types of skin lesions caused by fungi have been described in these animals, including lesions due to Malassezia. A subantartic fur seal (Arctocephalus tropicalis) kept in captivity presented bilateral alopecia on the caudal flipper and on the region below the pectoral flipper. To diagnose the possible cause of alopecia, bacterial and mycological cultures were performed, as well as an ethogram to assess the behavior of the animal. After confirmation of the presence of Malassezia pachydermatis in the affected regions, a treatment protocol was established, which proved to be effective for the resolution of the clinical case. The objective of this study is to report a case of alopecia in a fur seal, addressing the diagnosis and treatment that were performed.

A high degree of anatomical variability in many structures of Otaria byronia (Blainville, 1820) and Arctocephalus australis (Zimmerman, 1783) was observed, which should yield serious implications to the systematics of Otariidae. The main differences observed between the two species were: the breadth of the rostrum, the exposure (or not) of the ethmoid in the orbit, the palatine/pterygoid vacuity, the extension of the maxilla, the concaveness and shape of the palate, the size/shape of the orbit/supra-orbital process, the height/shape of the zygomatic arch, the shape of the hamulus pterygoideus, the size of processes and crests, the proportions of the sphenoid and of neurocranium, the occurrence or not of the vidian and transverse canals, the relieves of the cranial fossae, and the size of secondary angular process. While some differences (ethmoid) are rather unusual between contemporary species belonging to the same family, many others are of allometric nature. Some differences are peramorfic: skull size, palate size and crests size (hypermorphic in O. byronia). Others caracters are pedomorphic in this species: incisive foramen, maxille process of the frontal and vidian channels. The main differences between males and females of O. byronia, and similitarities between de males of this species and A. australis are related to developmental modification in rate or in the timing too. Some characters usually used in the group's systematics were not corroborated, mostly those related to the naso-labialis fossa; zygomatic-temporal suture; internal acoustic meatus and entotimpanic.

Bone diseases and tooth alterations in 47 specimens of Otaria byronia (Blainville, 1820), from southern Brazilian coast, were analized. Tooth wear and the associated bone pathologies were determined, as well as their percentuals. The main infection was osteomyelitis associated with tooth alterations, such as fractures and attrition, both of them exposing the pulp chamber. Tooth attrition increases with age, favoring fractures and their complications, including osteomyelitis, causing a high frequency of them in specimens presenting more pronounced tooth wear. In one specimen tuberculosis was found in the maxilla, perhaps primarily pulmonary. The high frequency of enamel hypoplasia might reflect cyclic food deficit. Infections and tooth fractures might be related to behaviour, such as fishermen interaction, territorial fighting, and accidents during food capture.
