To use Palmistichus elaeisis Delvare and LaSalle, 1993 (Hymenoptera: Eulophidae) in a biological control programme of Thyrinteina arnobia (Stoll, 1782) (Lepidoptera: Geometridae), it is necessary to study thermal requirements, because temperature can affect the metabolism and bioecological aspects. The objective was to determine the thermal requirements and estimate the number of generations of P. elaeisis in different Eucalyptus plantations regions. After 24 hours in contact with the parasitoid, the pupae was placed in 16, 19, 22, 25, 28 and 31 °C, 70 ± 10 percent of relative humidity and 14 hours of photophase. The duration of the life cycle of P. elaeisis was reduced with the increase in the temperature. At 31 °C the parasitoid could not finish the cycle in T. arnobia pupae. The emergence of P. elaeisis was not affected by the temperature, except at 31 °C. The number of individuals was between six and 1238 per pupae, being higher at 16 °C. The thermal threshold of development (Tb) and the thermal constant (K) of this parasitoid were 3.92 °C and 478.85 degree-days (GD), respectively, allowing for the completion of 14.98 generations per year in Linhares, Espírito Santo State, 13.87 in Pompéu and 11.75 in Viçosa, Minas Gerais State and 14.10 in Dourados, Mato Grosso do Sul State.(AU)

Mass rearing of parasitoids depends on choosing appropriate alternative hosts. The objective of this study was to select alternative hosts to rear the parasitoid Palmistichus elaeisis Delvare & LaSalle, 1993 (Hymenoptera: Eulophidae). Pupae of the lepidopterans Anticarsia gemmatalis Hübner, 1818 (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae), Bombyx mori Linnaeus, 1758 (Lepidoptera: Bombycidae) and Thyrinteina arnobia (Stoll, 1782) (Lepidoptera: Geometridae) were exposed to parasitism by females of P. elaeisis. The duration of the life cycle of P. elaeisis was 21.60 ± 0.16 and 24.15 ± 0.65 days on pupae of A. gemmatalis and B. mori, respectively, with 100.0% parasitism of the pupae and 71.4 and 100.0% emergence of parasitoids from the first and second hosts, respectively. The offspring number of P. elaeisis was 511.00 ± 49.70 and 110.20 ± 19.37 individuals per pupa of B. mori and A. gemmatalis, respectively. The reproduction of P. elaeisis from pupae of T. arnobia after six generations was similar to the other hosts.

Biopesticides based on Bacillus thuringiensis have been used for decades to control Thyrinteina arnobia (Stoll, 1782) (Lepidoptera: Geometridae) in eucalyptus plantations in Brazil. However, there are no reports of which cry genes are efficient to control this insect pest. In this study, 74 strains of B. thuringiensis were characterized by PCR for detection of cry1, cry1Ab and cry1Ac genes and its efficiency in controlling T. arnobia was verified by bioassays. The strains Br9, Br69, Br74, Br81 and R26 showed the highest mortality rates and their LC50 was determined. The cry1Ab and cry1Ac genes occurred separately in 16% and 45% of the isolates, respectively, and when present together the larvae control was above 50%, and the LC50 values were the highest. Both genes occured in 11% of the isolates, the control levels exceeded 80% and the LC50 was lower, suggesting that their presence together confers higher toxicity. It became evident that further studies regarding the detection of the genes present in isolates of B. thuringiensis, and its contribution to control T. arnobia are essential to clarify which genes confer higher toxicity and how they act individually or together to control these caterpillars, aiming the construction of genetically modified plants, biopesticides formulation or development of more effective resistance management programs for these insects for the cultivation of eucalyptus in Brazil

The thermal requirements of Palmistichus elaeisis Delvare & LaSalle, 1993 were determined by rearing this pupal parasitoid in the following lepidopteran hosts: Diatraea saccharalis (Fabricius, 1794) (Crambidae), Anticarsia gemmatalis (Hübner, 1818), Heliothis virescens (Fabricius, 1777), Spodoptera frugiperda (J.E. Smith, 1797) (Noctuidae) and Thyrinteina arnobia (Stoll, 1782) (Geometridae). The experiment was set in laboratory conditions (temperatures between 18ºC and 30ºC, RH=70 ± 10% and 14-hour photoperiod). The life cycle (egg-adult) ranged from 40.4 ± 0.63 days (18ºC, H. virescens) to 18.1 ± 0.13 days (28ºC, D. saccharalis). The thermal constant of the egg-adult period ranged from 353.1 (D. saccharalis) to 407.7 degree-days (S. frugiperda). The lowest thermal threshold ranged from 5.0ºC (A. gemmatalis) to 7.5ºC (D. saccharalis). At 30ºC, all prepupae died. These results suggest that P. elaeisis can be reared in laboratory on all the hosts tested.

The efficiency of deltamethrin and permethrin was evaluated against caterpillars and moths of the eucalyptus leaf caterpillars species Thyrinteina arnobia(Lepidoptera: Geometridae) and Nystalea nyseus (Lepidoptera: Notodontidae). Five sampling points were established in each experimental unit and the evaluations were performed after 24, 48 and 72 hours after insecticide aplication. A high dosage spraying was made after the last evaluation and the number of dead insects was counted in each sampling point and the efficiency (%) calculated in relation to the mortality in the control. It was observed a high and fast larvicidal effect of deltamethrin and permethrin against these defoliator species. These insecticides however, were not efficient against the adults of these species and showed low selectivity in relation to other insects, mainly parasitoid Hies.
