Tourinhos NEL tiveram maior receita líquida do que BRN e CAN.
The objective of this study was to evaluate the performance, body growth, blood profile, carcass quality, meat quality and economic viability of beef cattle receiving mineral or energy-mineral supplementation in Tifton 85 pasture with subsequent feedlot finishing. Initially we used 81 bull calves including Nellore (NEL), 1/2Nellore1/2Brangus (BRN) e 1/2Nellore1/2Canchim (CAN), with average initial weight of 252±33 kg. The mineral supplement (MS) intake was similar between the genetic groups with a mean of 0.073 kg/day per animal, while the energy-mineral supplement (EMS) intake was higher (P<0.05) for the BRN with 2.10 kg/day. The average daily weight gain (ADG) was higher (P<0.05) for animals receiving EMS. For young bulls treated with MS, the BRN had the highest ADG with 0.64 kg (P<0.05). For bulls consuming EMS, the CAN had greater ADG with 0,97 kg (P<0.05). The cost of the EMS was higher in all genetic groups. The net income per animal in groups that received MS was better for the BRN. For the animals that received EMS, the CAN had better net income. NEL and CAN that received EMS had higher economic return than those treated with MS, while the BRN with MS had better economic return. In the feedlot phase, 79 animals were used, with initial mean weight of 330±43 kg. BRN that received mineral supplementation during the backgrouding had the highest (P<0.05) dry matter intake with 9.54 kg per day. The ADG was similar between the genetic groups receiving MS during backgrounding, while in the animals treated with EMS, the BRN and CAN had greater (P<0.05) weight gain. Only the NEL presented difference (P<0.05) for ADG between the supplements, being higher for those treated with MS. Nellore bulls had higher net return than BRN and CAN. After finishing the animals were slaughtered in a commercial slaughterhouse. The cold carcass weight of the animals treated with EMS was of 288.0 kg, being higher (P<0.05) than those treated with MS with 265.3 kg, and the cold carcass weight of the BRN (303.9 kg) was higher (P<0.05) than the NEL (269.1 kg) and CAN (270.0 kg). The carcass yield was not influenced by the type of supplement or genetic group with a general average of 55.5%. LDA was similar in all treatments, presenting average of 74.1 cm² or 25.67 cm²/100 kg of carcass. The subcutaneous fat thickness was higher (P<0.05) for the BRN (6.0 mm) than the NEL (4.5 mm) and CAN (4.8 mm), without difference between the two supplements during backgrounding, with averages of 5.2 mm and 5.1 mm for MS and EMS, respectively. In general, EMS treated animals had higher (P<0.05) primary carcass cuts weights than MS animals, with BRN having the highest weights. The carcass conformation score was better (P<0.05) for the CAN, obtaining an average of 10.0 points against 9.2 of the NEL and 9.6 of the BRN. The carcass length was higher (P<0.05) for the animals of the BRN group with average of 137.1 cm in relation to the NEL (131.2 cm) and the CAN (132.0 cm). EMS animals had longer carcasses (135.1 cm) than SM (131.7 cm) (P<0.05). NEL bulls had better meat color and CAN better marbling score (P<0.05). The meat shear force was similar in all treatments. The type of supplement did not influence the quality characteristics of the meat as well as its chemical composition. The EMS for use during backgrounding in the rainy season in Tifton 85 grass is recommended for Nellore and CAN bulls, for the BRN is recommended to use MS. Regardless of the type of supplementation during the backgrounding, the Nellore bulls had higher net revenue at the end of the experiment.
