The goal of this dissertation is to understand and interpret the occupational stress of female policeofficers in Rio de Janeiro, as a health problem that has consequences for their work and familylife. We seek their perceptions about gender differences in the performance of policework, therelationship between occupational stress and health problems and the strategies used to mitigatethis type of stress. We choose the qualitative method for our field research, using the technique offocus groups for data collection. Distributed in eight groups, we had a total of 42 participantsbetween female officers and non-officers, and operational and health professionals. Theparticipants relate the stress to their daily work, cite a number of symptoms and indicate thatfamily relationships are affected. Their stress originates primarily in management andorganizational issues, since most females are employed in internal positions. Genderdiscrimination, sexual and moral harassment are perceived as stressors. Suffering related tooccupational stress appears more strongly among the officers in commanding roles. Operationalactivities are perceived as more stressful because they offer greater risks and therefore generatefear and tension. Physical exercise was cited as the most effective strategy to prevent theconsequences of stress. There is a need for organizational and managerial changes from theperspective of gender and investment in preventive measures that can reduce the consequences ofstress within the police force of Rio de Janeiro (AU)
