Essential hypertension is one of the most frequent chronic pathologies in adult population in Chile and is one of the most significant cardiovascular risk factors. The general objective of this study was to determine the prevalence of this disease in the population submitted to study by Medical preventive exam (EMPA) during the period January-June 2009 in Padre Las Casas, 9th.Region. A transversal research was carried out including a total population of 497 citizens between 15 and 64 years old (average of 37.7 years old ), 65.6 percent being women. We considered as patient with hypertension all individual with persistent high blood pressure (BP) equal or higher than 140-90mmHg. For classification in stages we used the method of JNC7. The information was obtained from the forms previously filled-in by patients and it was incorporated in an excel table for its subsequent analysis with Stata10.0 program. The prevalence of hypertension in the sample was of 25.6 percent. The prevalence by sex was 25.8 percent for men and 25.1 percent for women. Our conclusion reveals that the prevalence of this disease in Chilean population is higher than the one indicated in Chilean literature (19 percent). No significant difference was observed between men and women.
