Cheio de mistério e cercado de mistérios: Lima Barreto (1881-1922), psiquiátras, hospício, e o diagnóstico de alcoolismo / Full of mystery and surrounded by mysteries: Lima Barreto (1881-1922), Psychiatrists, hospice, and the diagnosis of alcoholism
A partir do estudo da experiência de vida do escritor Lima Barreto (1888-1922), internado duas vezes no Hospício Nacional de Alienados (HNA) - 1914 e 1919 - sob o diagnóstico de alcoolismo, este trabalho propõe a discussão de como o diagnóstico é incorporado à vida humana e como pode atuar na constituição identitária do indivíduo, buscando compreender a representação do alcoolismo na sociedade brasileira entre o final do século XIX e início do século XX, e seu reflexo na vivência de um indivíduo diagnosticado com a doença. Para isto, foram levantados pensamentos fortalecidos entre médicos da época sobre as relações entre hereditariedade e alcoolismo, assim como os expostos na produção literária de Lima Barreto. Para um maior entendimento das teorias médicas foram analisados artigos escritos por profissionais que interagiram com Lima Barreto durante suas internações, e outros que, igualmente, faziam parte do corpo médico do HNA e escreviam sobre o alcoolismo no periódico psiquiátrico Archivos Brasileiros de Psychiatria, Neurologia e Sciencias Afins. Com o objetivo de entender como estes pensamentos ultrapassavam a esfera psiquiátrica e eram apresentados à esfera política, relatórios ministeriais escritos por alguns desses profissionais envolvidos com a Assistência a Alienados foram analisados. Além disto, para melhor compreender como ocorria o processo de internação, foi fundamental a análise de prontuários médicos contendo descrições de diagnósticos e tratamentos, focando principalmente nas duas internações do escritor no HNA. Desta forma, o trabalho discute as implicações de um diagnósticomédico psiquiátrico na vida do indivíduo diagnosticado, partindo da experiência de Lima Barreto e seus questionamentos acerca da ciência e do diagnóstico recebido. From the study of the life experience of the writer Lima Barreto (1888-1922),who was twice interned in the Hospício Nacional de Alienados (National Hospice for the Alienated) in 1914 and 1919 with a diagnosis of alcoholism, this work proposes a discussion of how the medical diagnosis is incorporated into humanlife and how it may act upon the individuals identity constitution, searching to understand therepresentation of alcoholism in the brazilian society between the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century, as well as its reflex upon the life of the writer. For this end, the work collects the ideas then strengthened by physicians aboutthe relation between heredity and alcoholism, as well as those exposed on the literary production of Lima Barreto. To bring up these literary writings had as an objective the presentation of the writers own interpretations of the presence of such elements in hisdaily life. For a better understanding of the medical theories about alcoholism, articles written by physicianswho interacted with Lima Barreto during his internments were analyzed, as well as articles by other physicianswho also belonged to the medical staffof the National Hospice for the Alienated and wrote about the disease on the psychiatric periodical Archivos de Psychiatria, Neurologia e Sciencias Afins (Archives of Psychiatry, Neurology and Affine Sciences). Searching to understand how these ideas extrapolated the psychiatric sphere andwere presented to the political sphere, Ministerial Reports written by some of these professionals involved with the Assistance to the Alienated were analyzed. Moreover, searching for a better understanding of how the process of internment occurred, it wasfundamental to analyze the medical records with the descriptions of the diagnoses and their treatments, focusing mainly in both interments of the writer.
