RESUMO
Aim: This study aimed to investigate the prevalence of physical violence and head and neck injuries among children and adolescents who suffered physical aggression, firearm aggression, and white gun aggression referred to the Legal Medical Department in a southern city in Brazil. Methods: This study was performed at Legal Medical Department in the city of Pelotas, RS, Brazil, from January 2011 to December of 2015. Data were collected from medical reports of children and adolescents (0-19 years old). Demographic information such as sex, age, and skin color was collected. Data were submitted to Chi-square test and multivariate Poisson regression analysis. Results: In this study, 2,716 physical examination reports were analyzed, with a total of 2,171 exams resulting from violence; lesions that had physical aggression as their etiology (1,951) had a higher prevalence. The analysis of the exams revealed that the majority were adolescents (90,05%), white (84.09%), and female (50.21%). The head and neck regions were affected in most cases of violence (57.90%). In the adjusted model, the occurrence of injuries in the head and neck region was higher in males (PR 1.16, CI 95% 1.08 - 1.25), among adolescents (PR 1.28, CI 95% 1.10 - 1.48) and in victims of physical aggression compared to victims of the firearm (2.81, CI 95% 1.79 - 4.40). Conclusion: The results revealed a high prevalence of head and face injuries in victims of violence and that there was a greater prevalence of physical violence among adolescents compared to children and males

Health professionals are exposed to the most diverse occupational risks during their workday and dentists lead the number of accidents with biological materials. The assistance provided by dental students leaves them exposed to occupational risks in a similar way to professionals in the field. This study aimed to evaluate the prevalence and characteristics of accidents with cutting and piercing instruments among students of a Dentistry course. There was a prevalence of 28.85% of accidents, with the highest percentage in the 5th period of the course, mainly in the Surgery and Endodontics clinics. Only 20% of those affected reported the occurrence and the sickle probe was the instrument most involved. In addition, accidents occurred equally in patient care and washing of instruments. Therefore, it is necessary to invest in permanent educational and normative actions to raise the awareness of students about needlestick injuries (AU).

Soft tissues transfixing wounds (TWs) may be characteristic in individuals admitted to emergency departments due to the high morbidity and discomfort they can cause. Although this type of trauma does not present a high incidence, its implications can provide sequels and cosmetic damages to the face. The aim of the present study is to describe, by means of a case report, the approach adopted for a patient who was accidentally transfixed, in a middle third of the face, by a sharp object used in the place where he worked. Case report: Male, 47 years old and normossemic, sought care in an emergency hospital service presenting a meat hook transfixed in his nose, penetrating the right nasal mucosa region up to the nasal skin dorsum, only reporting interest in removing the object and pain, without presenting airway obstruction or commitment of another facial structures. Regarding the clinical conditions of the present case, the hook was removed under local anesthesia by an oral and maxillofacial surgeon, preserving the nasal septum during the procedure and suturing the lesion in the nasal skin dorsum. Final considerations: Although there is no established clinical-surgical protocol regarding the management of patients with TWs, it is recommended that the surgeon proposes to remove the object under conservative management in order to preserve the maximum possible anatomic structures, as well as this case was conducted.(AU)

Percutaneous injuries are a common problem among dentists, who are among the healt hcare professionals most involved in occupational accidents. This study evaluated the prevalence and characteristics of needlestick and sharp instrument injuries and the factors associated with these accidents among dentists. Structured, self-administered questionnaires were distributed to all dentists currently working in Montes Claros, Brazil. Percutaneous injuries within the previous six months and during the course of professional life were reported by 19.1% and 81.3%, respectively. The instrument most frequently mentioned was the bur, and injuries involved the finger; 56.3% reported the presence of bleeding, while 51.5% reported a compliance with the post-exposure protocol. Associated factors included sex, age, marital status, consumers of alcohol, hours worked per day, the use of gloves and mask 100% of the time, report of breaks taken during working hours, and knowledge about the post-exposure protocol. A higher prevalence of accidents occurred among dentists who were women, who were older aged, who drank alcohol, and who were unmarried. The list also included those who worked longer than 8 hours per day, did not take breaks during working hours, used masks100% of the time, did not wear gloves all the time, and did not know the Brazilian post-exposure protocol.
