RESUMO

Most patients require orthodontic treatment to improve the esthetics of their smile. Orthodontists must consider how some parameters of mini-esthetics can influence the patient's esthetic perception. Methods: A photograph of the smile of a young female was taken and some modifications were made to the buccal corridor, gingival exposure, smile arc and midline position to assess the influence of these variables on smile attractiveness. Two hundred examiners were selected from four groups: orthodontists (O), dental students (DS), orthodontic patients (OP) and surgical-orthodontic patients (SOP). Each examiner was asked to complete the questionnaire with an approval rating from 1 to 10. Significant level was set at P ≤ 0.05. Results: Only orthodontists considered buccal corridors of 4mm and midline deviation of 1mm as non-esthetic; all other examiners considered gingival exposures ≥3 mm and midline angulation as non-esthetic. All examiners assigned higher satisfaction values to the photo with the concordant smile arc and defined as non-esthetic the covered smile and the reverse smile arc. Patients perceived as non-esthetic only midline deviations of 4mm. The surgical orthodontic patients assigned lower values to the photos and showed greater attention to evaluating the esthetics of the smile than the orthodontic patients. Conclusion: Smile arc, gingival exposure and midline angulation influence smile esthetics; the role of buccal corridors and midline deviation is dependent on the type of examiner

RESUMO

The educational environment affects dental students' well-being and academic achievement, with unclear impact from clinical instructors on burnout levels. This study is aimed to determine the impact of students' perception about their clinical instructors in its burnout levels in a sample of Chilean dental students. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted among fourth and fifth-year dental students at the University of Concepción (Chile), collecting data on various variables including demographics, effective teaching hours, instructor treatment, knowledge delivery, student appreciation, and burnout assessed using Maslach's Burnout Inventory (MBI). Data were gathered through a self-administered survey and analyzed using STATA 10/SE software (p<0.05). Results: One-hundred and seventy students participated, high levels of emotional exhaustion (51.76%), depersonalization (56.47%), and personal accomplishment (60.59%) were found. Female students (p=0.0008), those who perceive inadequate treatment from instructors towards patients (p=0.0496), and those who rate the instructor as obstructionist (p=0.0208) reported higher levels of emotional exhaustion. 5th year students (p=0.0142), students who perceive indifferent treatment from instructors towards students (p=0.0002), and those who rate the instructor as obstructionist (p=0.0026) exhibited higher levels of depersonalization. 4th year students (p=0.0475) and those who perceive indifferent treatment from instructors towards students (p=0.0221) showed lower levels of personal accomplishment. There was a correlation between depersonalization and effective teaching hours (rho=-0.2166, p=0.0046). Conclusion: Students' perception about their clinical instructors as indifferent towards the students, obstructionist in the teaching process, with inadequate treatment towards the patients, and less effective teaching hours is associated with higher students' burnout levels.

Oral Health Literacy (OHL) is defined as the ability of individuals to obtain, process, and comprehend basic information about oral health, as well as the necessary services to apply this information and make appropriate health choices. Other determinants for the care and maintenance of adequate oral health include oral health perception, utilization of dental services, and socioeconomic aspects of families. The knowledge, perception, and value attributed to this information influence individuals' behavior. Thus, the objectives of this study were to associate parents' OHL with self-perceived and proxy-perceived oral health of their children, as well as socioeconomic conditions, and to assess the impact of early childhood caries (ECC) and parents' OHL on children's dental service utilization. A representative cross-sectional study was conducted with 449 pairs of parents and preschoolers aged 4 to 6 years from Ribeirão das Neves, MG. Parents completed the Brazilian version of the Hong Kong Oral Health Literacy Assessment Task for Paediatric Dentistry (BOHLAT-P) questionnaire to measure OHL, a sociodemographic questionnaire, and questions about their selfperceived oral health and proxy-perceived oral health of their children, the influence of their child's oral health on general well-being, and their child's dental service utilization. Two trained and calibrated examiners diagnosed ECC using the International Caries Detection and Assessment System (ICDAS). Data from the studies were analyzed using Hierarchical Multivariable Poisson Regression with robust variance and multivariable logistic regression (p<0.05). The analysis of Study 1, using hierarchical multivariable approach, demonstrated that parents with a good perception of their children's oral health status (RR=1.04; 95%CI: 1.00-1.09) and who did not perceive an impact of oral health condition on their children's general well-being (RR=1.03; 95%CI: 1.01-1.10) were more likely to have high OHL. The multiple hierarchical model was adjusted for family income, government assistance, respondent's dental visit history, respondent's perception of preschooler's oral condition, and respondent's perception of the influence of oral condition on preschooler's general well-being. Parents with a family income >2 minimum wages had on average 6% higher OHL scores than those with lower family income (RR=1.06; 95%CI: 1.02-1.10). Parents who did not receive government assistance had on average 9% higher OHL scores than those who received such assistance (RR=1.09; 95%CI: 1.03-1.14). The multivariable logistic regression of Study 2 revealed that children whose parents had lower OHL had 34% lower odds of using dental services compared to those whose parents had higher OHL (OR=0.66; 95%CI: 0.45-0.99). Preschoolers with cavitated carious lesions were 1.82 times more likely to use dental services (OR=1.82; 95%CI: 1.23-2.70) compared to those without cavitated carious lesions. In conclusion, parents' OHL is influenced by the family's socioeconomic conditions, and dental services are more utilized by preschoolers with cavitated carious lesions and whose parents have higher OHL scores.

Crohn's disease (CD) is a type of inflammatory bowel disease. The oral manifestations of CD may be related to the disease itself, to the pharmacological therapy or to nutritional deficiencies. Oral health may affect various aspects of everyday life, such as the speech, chewing, socialization, and well-being. Thus, the influence of oral conditions on the quality of life related to health should be evaluated. The Oral Health Impact Profile (OHIP-14) has been previously validated for Brazilian Portuguese, and has been applied in different age groups. The aim of this study was to evaluate the impact of oral health on the daily lives of individuals with CD. Participants included in the study were those with CD attending a specialized outpatient clinic, during the study period. The control sample consisted of patients from the orthopedics clinic of the same hospital, balanced by gender and age. Sociodemographic data were collected, and the OHIP-14 questionnaire was applied to assess the impact of oral health on the daily lives of research participants. Data were analyzed with appropriate statistical tests to verify differences between individuals with CD and controls. The sample was composed mainly of non-white women, with education level up to high school, earning until three minimum wages, and there were no differences between groups, in relation to sociodemographic characteristics. Most of the individuals never smoked or consumed alcohol. There was some negative impact on the answers to the questionnaire. Psychological discomfort and physical pain were negatively the most affected dimensions and social limitation, social incapacity and social disadvantage were the least affected dimensions, and there were no statistical differences between the groups neither in the dimensions, nor in the total of OHIP-14 score. Impact of oral health condition was found in 83% of individuals in the control group and 94% in the CD group, with no significant difference between groups. A statistically significant difference was found in relation to gingival bleeding, which was referred by 23 (43.4%) patients with CD and 6 controls (19.4%, p=0.033). All patients who noticed gingival bleeding reported 1 or more impacts on the questionnaire (p=0.046). . Patients fom both groups reported various negative impacts on their daily lives, with no significant differences between groups. The oral health of the CD group was negatively impacted from the perspective of the OHIP-14, mainly in the domains of physical pain and psychological discomfort, which were associated with tooth loss, presence of mouth sores and gingival bleeding, detected by the self-assessment questionnaire. The higher frequency of perceived gingival bleeding in the CD group suggests a worse periodontal condition compared to controls, which should be verified and confirmed by clinical studies. (AU)

RESUMO

Aim: to evaluate the association of the patients' perception about dentist's affect and cognition on trust and, consequently, on intention to return and patient satisfaction with life. Methods: Analytical cross-sectional study conducted in patients' adults and elderly at of two dentistry clinics in the south of Brazil. Patients had to have a previous relationship with the dentist (at least one previous consult) and 18 years of age or older. The data were collected through self-administrated questionnaire using measures adapted from other research, using structural equation modeling. We test using a chi-square difference test (p-value<0,05). Results: The mean age of the 197 patients was 37.0 years (σ = 15.5). The affect perceived by the patient at the dentist had a positive effect (ß = .53) on the trust that the patient develops in relation to the dentist. The same is true for the effect of the rational or cognitive aspects perceived by the patient at the dentist (ß = .41). The trust positively influences the patient's intention to return to that dentist (ß = .82). In addition, the intention to return to the dentist positively influences the patient's satisfaction with life (ß = .49). Conclusions: Affective and cognitive aspects positively influenced the patient's trust in the dentist. The greater the patient's trust in the dentist, the greater the intention to return to that dentist. Furthermore, a good relationship with the dentist improve the patient's satisfaction with life

RESUMO

Abstract Objective: To evaluate the perceptions of smile esthetics associated with variations in the vertical plane of the maxillary incisors in the smile arc using eye-tracking software. Material and Methods: An image of a 59-year-old Caucasian male model was adapted and edited to make three changes in the vertical plane, simulating a convex, straight, and reverse smile arc. Four areas of interest were inserted at the right and left eyes, nose, and mouth. Forty laypeople raters between 18 and 45 years of age participated of the study. Eye-tribe hardware and Ogama software were used to perform eye-tracking. Attractiveness and age-perception questions were also incorporated into the study. ANOVA test and Pearson's correlation coefficient, at p < 0.05. Results: The most observed AOI in images with convex, straight, and reverse smiles, as assessed using heatmaps and point maps, was the mouth, followed by the right eye. A significant difference for the eye (p=0.02) was found when comparing convex and reverse smiles, whereas a significant difference for the mouth was observed between the straight and reverse smiles (p=0.03). Conclusion: Convex and straight smile arcs were associated with equal levels of attractiveness; the reverse smile was less attractive. No significant difference was noticed regarding age perception and the smile arcs. However, the reverse smile recorded a more complete fixation time.

Abstract Orthodontic treatment experiences continuous evolution in its appliances, especially due to esthetic and comfort reasons. Objective: The aim of this study was to evaluate the satisfaction and discomfort reported by patients undergoing orthodontic treatment with metallic and ceramic vestibular brackets, lingual brackets and Invisalign® aligners. Material and methods: Application of a standardized questionnaire to 126 patients of both genders, undergoing orthodontic treatment in private orthodontic offices for at least 90 days, with no other orthodontic accessory. Patients were divided into 4 groups: group I (n=30) vestibular metallic brackets, group II (n=30) vestibular esthetic brackets, group III (n=32) Invisalign® aligners and group IV (n=34) lingual fixed brackets. Comparison between the appliances were made by the chi-square test, and when this indicated a statistically significant difference multiple comparisons were performed by the test of proportions. Results: Vestibular metallic brackets were more perceived by others and brought greater esthetic discomfort. Ceramic brackets were less perceived by others than metallic vestibular brackets. Aligners were less perceived by others than vestibular brackets, caused fewer speech and brushing difficulties, less discomfort on the cheeks and less speech difficulties. Lingual brackets brought less esthetic discomfort, revealing also more tongue discomfort and less cheek discomfort. Conclusion: Patients reported more aesthetic discomfort with metallic vestibular brackets. Lingual appliances and aligners were less perceived by others and brought less esthetic discomfort to patients. All aligners patients would use these appliances again if they needed new treatment.(AU)

(AU)

Aesthetic standards play an important role in social acceptance. Consequently, there is a concern about the psychosocial impacts that dentoskeletal deformities can cause to an individual. Based on this assumption, this research aims to develop, validate and apply an instrument that assesses the aesthetic and social repercussions class II orthosurgical correction causes in lay people. Front and side photographs of a male and a female subject with dentoskeletal class II deformity due to mandibular retrusion were manipulated (Adobe Photoshop v.23.0.1, Adobe Systems Inc., San Jose, CA) to simulate the correction of anteroposterior dentoskeletal deformity. For this, a questionnaire was created, validated and applied, containing 10 questions that evaluated aesthetic and psychosocial issues. The answers to the questions were: certainly yes" = 4 points, "maybe yes" = 3 points, "neutral" = 2 points, "maybe no" = 1 point and "certainly not" = 0 points. The set of photographs/questionnaire was applied to 159 lay individuals, aged between 18 and 76 years. Descriptive statistics (mean ± standard deviation; median and interquartile range) and Wilcoxon test were used to compare social judgment scores. As a result, the questionnaire developed showed acceptability, confirmed the reliability and validity of the construct and appropriate internal consistency (ICC: 0.5 - 0.7). Independently of the sex of the individual in the image, social judgment scores were generally higher in manipulated photographs that simulate skeletal class II correction of skeletal class II through orthognathic surgery (P < 0.001). When comparing the original photographs (control) according to sex, the female individual had higher scores than the male (P < 0.001). Therefore, it is concluded that the developed questionnaire proved to be valid to evaluate the aesthetic and social repercussions that the class II orthosurgical correction causes in laypersons, in addition to having demonstrated that this malocclusion negatively impacts the laypersons' perception and social judgment.

The aim of the present research was to evaluate the preference of young university students from courses of the health, science, and human areas regarding different orthodontic appliance design. Two (models) young individuals were selected, one male and one female. Then 6 images were made simulating orthodontic appliances for each model. After producing a photo album with all the images, the albums have been given to university students (n=169) aged between 18 and 25 years old, along with a questionnaire. Three groups of evaluators from different areas of knowledge: Health (n=62), Science (n=51) an Human area (n=56) were formed. In the questionnaire, the evaluators identified which device they would prefer if they were treated, indicating the order of their preference on the 6 images. They also answered the reason for choosing that device model. Aligners had higher ratings than aesthetic devices (5.0). On the other hand, metallic appliances were the worst evaluated (2.0). There was no influence of the study area and the evaluator's gender on the hierarchy of attractiveness in the evaluation, however female evaluators from the Health area were more critical regarding metallic braces with blue ligature. Although the study area did not influence the preference for the type of appliance, with the most aesthetic being preferred over metallic ones, the most critical evaluations came from students in the Health area (AU)

RESUMO

Abstract Novel Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) has caused serious repercussions both physically and mentally. The crisis has laid an enormous workload on the global healthcare fraternity. This article has attempted to study the emotional and psychological status of the medical and dental fraternity across seven Asian countries (India, Malaysia, the Gulf Cooperation countries (GCC) and, others) and also deduce the degree of mental preparedness as they spearhead the war against COVID-19. A cross-sectional, descriptive online survey was carried out among potential participants from online forums and other health-related social communities. Bivariate analysis with descriptive statistics was applied to decipher the results. A total of 788 complete responses were analyzed. The response rate was 77.1%. Results revealed the perception of the Healthcare Professionals about COVID-19 and its implications in their personal and professional lives. Many categories from psychological and emotional standpoints were analyzed. Older HCPs (above 35 years) reported high levels of stress at the workplace (p = 0.002). About 43.5% of the HCPs from India reported that they have not received any specialized training on containing COVID-19 or any contagious disease. Intense emotional stress was reported by the HCPs when colleagues get infected. The medical professionals (61.7%) exhibited more work stress compared to their dental counterparts. Analyzing the psychological and emotional status of HCPs is imperative especially in this COVID-19 situation. Similar analyses are crucial to gauge the quality of our healthcare system and take necessary actions like training the workforce, revamping the infrastructure, and regulating the workflow.

Abstract: The aim of this study was to evaluate patient perception of surgical discomfort in third molar surgery and the association with clinical variables and polymorphisms associated with the FKBP5, SLC6A4, and COMT genes. This cross-sectional observational study was carried out on 196 participants aged between 18 and 64 years at the Federal University of Paraná in 11 months. The intensity of surgical discomfort was assessed using the QCirDental questionnaire. Data on surgical and individual procedures were also cataloged. The oral health related quality of life was assessed by the Oral Health Impact Profile questionnaire (OHIP-14). The DNA sample was obtained from cells of the oral mucosa. Five markers of the FKBP5, SLC6A4, and COMT genes were genotyped. The data were submitted to statistical analysis with a significance level of 5%. Women reported greater intensity of discomfort associated with third molar surgery compared to men (p = 0.001). In the recessive model, the AA genotype of the rs3800373 marker was associated with greater surgical discomfort (p = 0.026). Therefore, women and individuals of the AA genotype for the rs3800373 marker in the FKBP5 gene reported greater surgical discomfort associated with third molar surgery.

RESUMO

ABSTRACT OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the performance and perception of five models of front-of-package nutrition labeling (FOPNL) among Brazilian consumers. METHODS: Cross-sectional study, which applied an online questionnaire to 2,400 individuals, allocated randomly into six study groups: a control group and five others exposed to FOPNL (octagon, triangle, circle, magnifier and traffic light), applied to nine products. We evaluated the understanding of nutritional content, the perception of healthiness, the purchase intention and the perception of Brazilian consumers on the models. RESULTS: All FOPNL models increased the understanding of the nutritional content and reduced the perception of healthiness and purchase intention, when compared with the control group (41.3%). FOPNL warning models — octagon (62.4%), triangle (61.9%) and circle (61.8%) — performed significantly better than the traffic light (55.0%) regarding the understanding of the nutritional content. The performance of the magnifier (59.5%) was similar to the other four tested models, including the traffic light (55.0%), for understanding nutritional content. The individual analysis of the products suggests a better performance of warnings in relation to the magnifier and the traffic light for the perception of healthiness and purchase intention. Consumers were favorable to the presence of FOPNL, perceiving it as reliable to increase the understanding to nutritional information. CONCLUSION: FOPNL must be implemented on food labels in Brazil, considering that it increases the nutritional understanding, reduces the perception of healthiness and the purchase intention of products with critical nutrients. Warnings showed a better performance when compared with other models.

ABSTRACT OBJECTIVE: This research aimed to quantitatively assess the general public's awareness, attitude and perception of polio and its vaccination in Peshawar KPK, Pakistan. METHODS: We conducted a survey-based study to understand the surge in polio cases from 2015 to 2019 in the Peshawar city of the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KPK), Pakistan. A pre-tested questionnaire-based study was conducted in 2019 to assess the attitude and general perception of residents of Peshawar KPK towards polio vaccination. RESULTS: Out of 241 country-wide polio cases, 63 (26.1%) polio cases were reported in Peshawar city from 2015-2019. The questionnaire revealed that individuals between 18-30 years of age had sufficient knowledge (65.1%) about polio. Male and female participants had equal awareness (~ 43%). Participants with higher education (45.9%), those with better financial status (49.5%), individuals with children < 5 years of age (46.4%), and those who had experience of a polio patient (63.1%) had better knowledge. Participants inhabiting the central city were better aware (50.5%) of polio than individuals living in the outskirts. CONCLUSION: The data indicated that poor knowledge and negative attitudes of people towards polio vaccination are the main causes of the polio eradication program's failure. Moreover, religious beliefs, unchecked migration between the Pak-Afghan border, and lack of knowledge about polio vaccination are identified as critical barriers to polio eradication.

RESUMO

ABSTRACT OBJECTIVE Evaluating safety culture in the perception of professionals working in public hospitals of the Unified Health System (SUS) of Distrito Federal, Brazil, three years after the implementation of the National Patient Safety Program (PNSP). METHODS Analytical cross-sectional study conducted in eleven public hospitals using the Safety Attitudes Questionnaire (SAQ) in electronic format. Stratified sampling was estimated according to the proportion of the total number of professionals in each hospital, as well as the representativeness of each professional group. The results of the total score and domains equal to or greater than 75 were considered positive. Descriptive and inferential analyses of professional groups and hospitals were carried out. RESULTS 909 professionals participated. The total score by professional group was negative (62.5 to 69.5) and the domains differed statistically in all cases. The eleven hospitals had a negative total score (61.5 to 68.6). The domains to attain positive performance were job satisfaction, stress recognition and teamwork climate. The lowest results were in working conditions and management perception domains, for which none of the hospitals had an average above 75. Differences were also found for domain means across hospitals, except in management perception. DISCUSSION Three years after the implementation of PNSP, the safety culture in eleven hospitals evaluated was weak, although the domains of job satisfaction, stress recognition and teamwork climate had positive results. The results can contribute to decision-making by managers, as safety culture is an essential element in the implementation of patient safety policy.

(AU)

The aim of this study was to evaluate the perception of undergraduate dentistry students in the city of Rio de Janeiro in relation to the current job market, their professional training considering distance education, and the Proficiency Examination. The methodology used involved the application of a semi-structured online questionnaire with 32 questions about the current job market, professional training and distance learning, and a Proficiency Exam. The questionnaire was applied to undergraduate Dentistry students from a Public and Private Higher Education Institution (HEI) in Rio de Janeiro, from the 4th to the 8th semester. The total number of research participants was 97 students. Among the respondents, 78 were students from the public HEI, making a response rate of 44.83%, while 19 students responded from the Private HEI. The mean age of the studied population was 24.29 years old (SD±2.22) and 75.26% were female. 68.04% of the course was chosen due to the HEI's reputation for teaching quality, 14.43% to be free, and 7.22% due to proximity to residence, among others. with significance between groups (p=0.001). Most respondents did not know how many dentistry courses there are in Brazil (62.89%), (p=0.002) or how many dentists practice in the country (67.01%), (p=0.418). Almost half of the sample (47.42%) recognizes that the quality of dentists trained in Brazil is excellent or very good, with no statistical significance between the groups (p = 0.117). Regarding classroom classes, 74.23% agree that classroom classes are very important for professional training, with no statistical significance between groups (p=0.392). The perception of remote classes with theoretical content was quite variable among respondents, with 12.37% totally agreeing that they are equivalent in relation to in-person classes. Regarding clinical practice, 94.85% totally agree that clinical practices are very important, with no statistical significance between the groups (p = 0.277), and 81.44% totally agree that clinical practice internships outside of college are very important for training, with p = 0.954. About 94.85% have already had some experience with remote learning and most reported some degree of difficulty, with the lack of self-discipline and dispersion to follow classes being one of the most common reasons (48.45%) and 18.56% indicated instability problems with the internet. Regarding the adoption of a proficiency exam, 32.99% totally agreed and 6.19% totally disagreed, with no statistical significance between the groups (p = 0.169). And, 52.58% are of the opinion that the Regional Board of Dentistry (CRO) should apply the proficiency exam optionally, with statistical significance between the groups (p = 0005). Almost all students (96.91%) stated that they would take the proficiency exam, with no statistical significance between the groups (p=0.010). The proportions of the studied variables were compared between groups using Pearson's chi-square test or Fisher's exact test. It was concluded that students do not demonstrate accurate knowledge about the job market in Dentistry and also about some aspects of professional training, such as service management and active methodologies. Regarding the proficiency exam, it was concluded that students accept the exam as an option. (AU)

An understanding of dentoskeletal and facial features are essential for correct diagnosis and orthodontic treatment. As for the correct period of intervention, early treatment is justified to avoid dental trauma, tooth wear and the preservation of the child's self-esteem within society. Thus, the work aims to assess the perception of dentists about the diagnosis, ideal time and types of treatment of Class II Skeletal Malocclusion, through a scientific article, carried out through an electronic questionnaire for dentists ( n=315), distributed through email, Instagram and Facebook, consisting of 22 questions, determining socio-demographic characteristics, degree of perception of the participants, as well as ideal time and types of treatments for Class II Skeletal Malocclusion . Data were tabulated in the Statistical Package for Social Science (SPSS) version 20.1 for Windows. To verify the normality of the sample, the Shapiro-Wilk test was applied to compare the groups, the T test was performed, the binary logistic regression test was applied to measure the degree of relationship and behavior between the quantitative variables studied, the Chi-Square and/or Fisher's Exact test had been used in search of possible associations, positive associations were considered in the presence of p value <0.05. It was verified that most respondents were pediatric dentists (n=41.66% ± 9.82), female (n=42.23 % ± 9.70) with mean age (n=42.04% ± 9 .09), from the Southeast region (n= 42.28% ± 9.58) who exercised clinical activity in the private service (n=42.30% ± 9.87). There was no statistically significant association regarding self-perception of diagnosis and real knowledge about Skeletal Class II Malocclusion (p>0.05) in all specialties asked, except for Orthodontists. To help understand the diagnosis of Class II Skeletal Malocclusion, time of treatment and types of mechanotherapy, an explanatory leaflet was created on the Canva.com program, based on a literature review on the above subjects, within the Med database Line (via Pub Med and Web of Science). In addition, a clinical case report was carried out on the early treatment of Class II Skeletal Malocclusion in a child aged 6 years and 8 months treated with maxillary disjunction and sequence of aligners (Invisalign®), aiming at mandibular propulsion and improvement of the skeletal relationship and occlusion. It was observed that orthodontic treatment was able to reduce overjet, improve individual dental axial inclinations, attenuate the skeletal profile, improve altered stomatognathic functions together with interdisciplinary actions, as well as bringing aesthetic satisfaction to the patient and her family.

(AU)

The objective of this study was to investigate the content of YouTube videos published by Brazilians that address the experience of using a fixed appliance, signaling the perception of aesthetic, psychoemotional and social aspects related to orthodontic treatment, evaluating the profile of the authors and the veracity of the information presented. The analyzed sample was obtained through the search results of the phrase "tirei meu aparelho" ("I took off my appliance"), from which 100 YouTube channels were selected that addressed the orthodontic experience experienced by youtubers. Videos that did not show the use of a fixed appliance and cases in which the appliance was removed before the recommended time were excluded. The analyzed variables were the dental aesthetic perception before, during and after the use of the appliance, pain, difficulty of feeding and cleaning, as well as the relationship with the professional and accuracy of the technical information provided by the youtuber. The most 10 viewed videos surpassed 7.5 million views. There was a higher prevalence of videos posted by women (85%), adolescents between 11 and 18 years old (55%) using fixed metallic braces (92%). As for aesthetic perception, 72% reported being dissatisfied before the treatment and 86% were satisfied after the treatment. As for feed and sanitation, 51% and 35% had a negative perception, respectively. Presence of pain due to ulceration was reported in 57% of cases, whereas pain due to movement in 35% of cases. Only 3 cases mentioned dissatisfaction with the professional. Technical information on self-ligating and tooth extractions diverged from evidence-based Science. Based on the results obtained, there is a greater tendency of reports by female adolescents using metallic braces, expressing pain, feeding and hygiene difficulties, with good relationship with the professional, esthetic dissatisfaction before treatment and esthetic satisfaction after treatment were observed. Unscientific information regarding self-ligating appliances and tooth extractions was found. (AU)
