RESUMO

The aim of this study was to investigate the influence of the quantity and positioning of feldspathic ceramic specimens inside the furnace on their flexural strength and translucency. The tested hypotheses were that the arrangement of specimens in the furnance would not influence 1) the translucency or 2) the biaxial strength of the porcelain. Methods: Ninety porcelain specimens were made (1.2 mm thickness and 13.5 mm diameter) and assigned into two main groups (n=15): G1 group - 15 firing cycles containing only one specimen each, always at the center of the refractory; and G5 group - 15 firing cycles containing five specimen each, where one specimen was at the center of the refractory and four specimens positioned equidistantly on the periphery. The translucency test was performed using a spectrophotometer, followed by the flexural strength test, according to ISO 6872:2015. T-student test was performed for both the mechanical and optical obtained data. Results: The flexural strength of the porcelain was not affected by the positioning (center x periphery) of the specimens inside the furnace (p =0.08), but the translucency was affected (periphery > center; p =0.009). Regarding to the number of feldspathic ceramic specimens, the biaxial flexural strength was affected (p =0.025), as well as the translucency (p <0.05). Conclusion: A higher quantity of feldspathic ceramic specimens for each firing cycle decreased its biaxial flexural strength and translucency. Also, specimens positioned at the center of the refractory became less translucent than those positioned at the periphery.

Introduction:Tooth whitening is the most common cosmetic procedure performed in dental offices. The use of light sources has been recommended to accelerate the action of the whitening gel;however scientific evidence is controversial regardingthese sources. Objective:Evaluate tooth whitening protocols modified by light sources, aiming to verify, what is the influence of these sources in the tooth whitening procedure. Methodology:This being a research that used biological material, it was submitted and approved by theResearch Ethics Committee of UEPB. Teeth (n = 20) were obtained through a partnership with the Human Teeth Bank of the Dentistry course at UEPB Campus VIII. Subsequently, teeth identification was performed, followed by initial registration of tooth color(VITA scale), preparation of dental blocks and selection of groups. The teeth were submitted to two different whitening protocols, with halogen light and with LED, with or without changing the gel. Finally, statistical analysis was performed. Results:Themodification of the protocol, both in terms of the application time of the bleaching agent and in terms of the light source used, achieves satisfactory results. There was statistically significant difference between groupswith halogen light (p = 0.041). Conclusions:In view of the results and the discussion found in the research, we can see that the scientific evidence leads us to observe that there are not enough bases to prove the effectiveness and short-term benefits of modifying the teeth whitening protocols by light sources (AU).

RESUMO

Abstract Objective This study evaluated the clinical effect of violet LED light on in-office bleaching used alone or combined with 37% carbamide peroxide (CP) or 35% hydrogen peroxide (HP). Methodology A total of 100 patients were divided into five groups (n=20): LED, LED/CP, CP, LED/HP and HP. Colorimetric evaluation was performed using a spectrophotometer (ΔE, ΔL, Δa, Δb) and a visual shade guide (ΔSGU). Calcium (Ca)/phosphorous (P) ratio was quantified in the enamel microbiopsies. Measurements were performed at baseline (T 0 ), after bleaching (T B ) and in the 14-day follow-up (T 14 ). At each bleaching session, a visual scale determined the absolute risk (AR) and intensity of tooth sensitivity (TS). Data were evaluated by one-way (ΔE, Δa, ΔL, Δb), two-way repeated measures ANOVA (Ca/P ratio), and Tukey post-hoc tests. ΔSGU and TS were evaluated by Kruskal-Wallis and Mann-Whitney, and AR by Chi-Squared tests (a=5%). Results LED produced the lowest ΔE (p<0.05), but LED/HP promoted greater ΔE, ΔSGU and Δb (T 14 ) than HP (p<0.05). No differences were observed in ΔE and ΔSGU for LED/CP and HP groups (p>0.05). ΔL and Δa were not influenced by LED activation. After bleaching, LED/CP exhibited greater Δb than CP (p>0.05), but no differences were found between these groups at T 14 (p>0.05). LED treatment promoted the lowest risk of TS (16%), while HP promoted the highest (94.4%) (p<0.05). No statistical differences of risk of TS were found for CP (44%), LED/CP (61%) and LED/HP (88%) groups (p>0.05). No differences were found in enamel Ca/P ratio among treatments, regardless of evaluation times. Conclusions Violet LED alone produced the lowest bleaching effect, but enhanced HP bleaching results. Patients treated with LED/CP reached the same efficacy of HP, with reduced risk and intensity of tooth sensitivity and none of the bleaching protocols adversely affected enamel mineral content.

RESUMO

Introduction: The color stability of resin cements, whether dual-pre-cured or photopolymerizable, as well as the color of the dental substrate, are fundamental for the aesthetic success of ceramic restorations, since the ceramic presents a high level of translucency due to its small thickness. Objective: The aim of this in vitro study was to evaluate the color of a resin cement light polymerized by different light sources and immersed in potentially staining beverages. Material and method: Were made 42 specimens of resin cement Variolink-Esthetic (2×6mm) (n=7), being half polymerized with LED light (F1) and half with Halogen light (F2). The specimens were stored in artificial saliva at 37 °C±1 °C. After 24 hours, they were polished with abrasive discs, and divided for the purpose of being submitted to the different solutions for 2 minutes per day, for 28 days, as follows: S1 - Coca-Cola; S2 - Red Wine; and S3 - Distilled Water (Control). Five color readouts were taken: T0 - initial; T1 - 7 days; T2 - 14 days; T3 - 21 days; and T4 - 28 days; with a spectrophotometer (Model SP62S). The color change data (ΔE*) were submitted to statistical analysis, ANOVA and Tukey (p≤0.05). Result: Analyzing the factor solution, S2 (5.89 (±0.02)), produced a higher ΔE* value than S1 (3.79 (±0.02)) and (S1), a higher value than S3 (1.41 (±0.02)). Analyzing the factor light source, F2 (4.05 (±0.12)), produced a higher ΔE* value than F1 (3.33 (±0.12)). When analyzing the factor time, ΔE* values were found to increase gradually over the course of time: T1(2.36 (±0.08)); T2(3.27 (±0.08)); T3(4.06 (±0.08)); and T4(5.09 (±0.08)). Conclusion: It was concluded that red wine produced a greater color change; Halogen light promoted highest degree of pigmentation; and the longer the time of immersion, the greater the color change of the material.

Photobiomodulation by laser and LED is a new therapeutic non-invasive trend. Photophysical and photochemical effects occur in immunomodulation, acceleration of wound healing and angiogenesis and reduction of pain. These effects are desired in bone tissue but there are no defined parameters for light irradiation and no consensus for the best effect on osseous cells. The aim of this study was to evaluate photobiomodulation effects on cell viability and mineralization events of rat osseous granulation cells (rGO). Cells in 6th passage were plated in 96-well plates for viability tests (1x10³ cells), and 24-well plates for in vitro wound healing test (1x104 cells), mineralization and alkaline phosphatases (AF) activity (4x104 cells). Cells were cultured in DMEM (10% bovine fetal serum) and irradiation with lasers (AlGaAs-660nm e AlGaInP-810nm) and LED (637±15nm). Experimental groups were red laser (3 and 5 J/cm²), infrared laser (3 and 5 J/cm²), LED (3 and 5s), positive(C+) and negative controls (C-, 1% bovine fetal serum). For mineralization and AF assays, other groups with osteogenic medium and same light treatments were added. Cell viability was evaluated by MTT and crystal violet tests at 24, 48, 72 and 96h. In vitro wound healing test evaluated the percentage of wound closure area by cells migration at 12, 24, 36, 48h. Mineralization test was done by alizarin red at 14, 21 and 28 days. AF activity was measured at 7, 14 and 21 days. Statistical analysis was performed by ANOVA complemented by Tukeys test (p<0,05). Results showed that light therapies in general increased viability and wound healing closure, mostly red laser and LED5s (p<0,05). Best results in mineralization stimulation were observed for LED5s. In groups with osteogenic medium, a synergistic effect of photobiomodulation resulted in higher numbers of mineral nodules. Light groups stimulated higher mineral nodule formation than positive control (p>0.05) even in groups with regular medium, showing an osteogenic induction by light. Increased AF activity was observed at 7 days in light treatment groups (p<0,05). In conclusion, laser and LED photobiostimulation increased viability, cell migration and mineralization events in osteoblasts with best results for red laser and LED.(AU)

RESUMO

A Odontologia Restauradora e a Protése devem satisfazer as exigências estéticas do paciente e contribuir para a saúde gengival e articular (oclusão).

Restorative dentistry and dental prosthesis must meet patients' aesthetic expectations and preserve gingival and articular health. In such circumstances it is common to observe dentoalveolar disproportion, poorly positioned teeth, large, deviations of the long axis, unfa-vorable axial inclination, diastema, etc. In order to create the illusion of different dimension and rotations, optical resources can be applied respecting visual tolerance limits. These resources range from the stratification of the colors used on the restoration/prostheses to proper planning of reflexive area, incisal angles, transition areas, texture, brightness, texture and proximal contact points. The present study approaches some principles that may be used in order to improve dental appearance through optical resources over enamel surface

The aim of this double blind split-mouth randomized clinical study was to evaluate, in vivo, the effectiveness of prior acid etching on enamel and low concentration bleaching gels based on hydrogen peroxide (HP) associated with hybrid light (HL) sources, having as response variables: dental sensitivity, dental pulp vascularization and degree of color change and stability over 6 months. Thirty-six volunteers in agreement with the inclusion and exclusion criteria were selected and randomly divided into 3 groups (n = 12) according to the bleaching protocol to be used. Within each group, one of the sides was randomly selected for the execution of acid etching prior to the gel application. The three bleaching gels were: 10% HP (experimental) associated with HL-based violet LED/laser (experimental); 15% HP associated with HL-based blue LED/laser; and 35% HP without light activation. Sensitivity was evaluated with the VAS scale; pulp flowmetry by the use of the Laser Doppler system; and efficacy was evaluated by calculating the ?E via a spectrophotometer. Data were analyzed by analysis of variance for repeated measures (ANOVA), Tukeys and Friedman tests (p<0.05). Regarding sensitivity, significant differences were found in the interaction between the application time and group but not regarding etching. For dental pulp flowmetry, the group effect was not rejected, where the 35% HP showed the lowest medians for the percentile variations, but the effects of etching and time were not significant. For color, significant differences were found between the groups, but not between the sides with and without acid etching, where the 35% HP gel promoted the highest increase in ?E. It is therefore concluded that the etching was not able to favor the effectiveness of whitening due to color variation and stability, as well as not increasing sensitivity or pulp blood flow. The concentration of bleaching agents determined the degree of color change and influenced the...

Introduction: Clinically, it is common to observe the effects of composite restorations stratification only after the polishing. Aim: This study evaluated the effect of polishing technique on light transmittance and surface topography of a composite resin. Material and method: Specimens of the composite resin Filtek Z-350 XT (color A1E) were built-up using a metal matrix. One of the specimens surfaces was finished with 12-blade burs and polished using one of following techniques: SL (Sof-Lex), EH (Enhance) and DH (DHPro). No polishing was used as control. After the polishing procedures, the samples were measured to check the final thickness (1 mm). The light transmittance was measured using a spectrophotometer connected to an integrating sphere, considered only light in the visible spectrum. The surface topography was measured by laser interferometer, assessing the parameters Sdq (hybrid), St (maximum amplitude) and Sa (average of peaks and valleys). Data (n=5) were submitted to ANOVA and SNK's test, while Pearson's correlation test was used to related Ssq, St and Sa to transmittance (α=0,05). Result: All polishing systems increased the light transmittance when compared to control, whereas no difference was observed between them. Only the samples polished with SL and DH showed lower Sdq values than control. Although for St and Sa parameters, EH showed lower values than those observed for control. Sdq and St showed significant correlation with transmittance. Conclusion: All polishing systems were effective to increase the transmittance, while the reduction of Sdq and St values were related to this modification. .

Among the cosmetic procedures, tooth whitening is the most conservative, since it involves only the use of bleaching substances associated or not to the application of physical agent, promoting thereby chromatic changes in dental tissues. However, pulp and structural changes of enamel and dentin in teeth whitened have been observed, especially when using a source of light or heat to accelerate the reaction of hydrogen peroxide during bleaching. Thus, the objective of this study is to review the literature on the advantages and disadvantages of performing bleaching with or without the use of light, addressing the effectiveness of bleaching agents and the possible effects on dental tissues. This is why scientific publications were selected according to the purposes of this study. From the literature survey, it was observed that the tooth whitening with the use of light sources may or may not bring harm intrapulpal, depending on the intensity and type of light used

The obvious structural difference between human enamel and the esthetic restorative materials explains the high complexity in achieving shade matching and color reproduction, since such substrates interact with natural light through highly different ways. Enamel yields optical effects based on principles of birefringence when illuminated. The tissue decomposes light into distinct rays and wavelengths which produces dynamic hue changes depending on the light incidence angle and on its trajectory within the tridimensional prismatic enamel body. Accordingly, it is necessary further studies on the interrelation between teeth and light, in order to better explore and understand how the chromatic expressions of natural teeth are set. The aim of this second paper on double light polarization was to describe the methodology required to carry out this technique of obtaining and recording the multiple optical effects of natural teeth.

This study aimed to evaluate the temperature variation in the vestibular surface of teeth and inside their pulp chamber generated by different protocols in office whitening. A human upper canine was sectioned below the enamel-cement junction and had the interior of its chamber enlarged to receive a thermally conductive paste and the sensor of type K digital thermometer. The temperature measurement was performed on the vestibular surface with infrared digital thermometer with laser-sights. The protocols in tooth whitening selected were distributed in twelve experimental groups, varying the light activation: light hybrid LED and laser diode (UltraBlue IV© - DMC), halogen light (Spectrum Curing Light©, Dentsply Caulk) and ultraviolet (Zoom! Lamp© - Discus Dental), and treatments: no bleaching gel, Lase Peroxide© (DMC), Whiteness HP Maxx© (FGM), and Whiteness HP© (FGM). Results were subjected to variance analysis 2 way (ANOVA) and Tukey test (p≤0.05). The highest elevations of temperature (5øC) inside the pulp chamber were observed in the groups activated with ultraviolet light without the use of gel and Whiteness HP Maxx©. The light hybrid showed a smaller increase in temperature (from 1.7 to 2øC). On the facial surface, the Zoom! Lamp also induced the largest increase statistically significant in relation to others. Both the bleaching gel and light activation were relevant to the temperature increase inside the pulp chamber. In vestibular surface temperature increase occurred by light activation, regardless the used gel.

RESUMO

Streptococcus mutans is the main etiological agent for dental caries. Recently, photodynamic therapy (PDT) has been introduced as a new modality in bacterial decontamination. Objective: This in vitro study was carried out to evaluate the susceptibility of Streptococcus mutans to antibacterial PDT using two different photosensitizers and light sources. Material and Methods: Standard suspensions of S. mutans were exposed to laser light at 662 nm and Radachlorin® or LED 630 nm in combination with Toluidine blue O (TBO). Radiation-only groups, photosensitizer alone, and groups with no treatment were used as controls. Bacterial suspension from each treatment was subcultured onto the surface of Mueller-Hinton agar plates and bacterial growth was assessed. The results were analyzed by analysis of variance and Tukey test (p<0.05). Results: PDT with TBO and Radachlorin® significantly reduced S. mutans viability, whereas no difference was observed between two groups of PDT. In the groups treated just with the photosensitizer or irradiated alone, no significant reduction of S. mutans colonies was observed. Conclusion: S. mutans colonies were susceptible to either 662 nm laser or LED light in the presence of Radachlorin® and TBO respectively with no priority. .

Aesthetic failure is one of the most common reasons for the replacement of restorations. A good combination of the tooth color and the color of the material just after light activation is an important clinical factor for successful outcome. Nonetheless, this combination must remain after the material is completely cured and throughout the restoration life-time. The purpose of the study was to evaluate, in vitro, the color stability of a composite resin light- -cured by different sources, a quartz tungsten halogen and a light emitting diode. Ten discs (21x2mm) of Esthet-X (Dentsply) shade A2 were prepared using a metallic matrix for each source total 20 specimens. After cured the specimens were finished and polished. The color stability was evaluated using C I E L*a*b* in a reflectance spectrophotometer. The shade of the specimens was measured before and after immersion in coffee at 37§C for 07 days. The results obtained were analyzed statistically by 2-way ANOVA and Bonferroni`s test at 5% significance level. According to the results obtained, the authors concluded that the specimens of Esthet-X immersed in coffee showed color change clinically visible and did not exist significant statistically difference of color stability between QTH and LED sources

This study evaluated the effect of acid etching of the enamel and the combination of different light sources (halogen light, LED and LED/LASER) with bleaching product on the color change, penetration of hydrogen peroxide and cytotoxicity during the time. The color change (ΔE) and the measurement of peroxide that permeated the tooth tissue were analyzed by spectrophotometer. Cell metabolism was evaluated by MTT assay and the morphology by SEM. The results showed no difference in the values of ΔE and in the permeation of hydrogen peroxide in all experimental conditions. It was found that tooth whitening produced a significant reduction in cell metabolism, regardless of the use or not the light source. The preconditioning of the enamel did not influence the cellular metabolism in either group. It was concluded that the association of the bleaching product with different light sources and/or the preconditioning of the enamel are few significant in color change, trans-enamel and trans-dentinal penetration of hydrogen peroxide, cytotoxicity and cell morphology

This study evaluated the influence of different types of restorative indirect materiais (zirconium oxide and lithium disilicate) in transmittance of light emitted by different types of curing units. Discs with 1 mm thickness and 10 mm dia meter were prepared from the indirect restorative materiais: IPS e.max ZirCAD (Ivoclar Vivadent) and IPS e.max (Ivoclar Vivadent). A nanofluorapatite ceramic (IPS e.max, Ivoclar Vivadent) was applied over theindirect materiais with 1 mm thickness. Five different light curing units were tested: Arc Light II (Air Technologies), ColtoLux LED (Colténe Whaledent), Elipar Free Light 2 (3M ESPE), Astralis 10 (Ivoclar Vivadent) and Ultralume 5 (Ultradent), which was used in regular mode, only light blue and only violet. The Irradiance through different restorative materiais was measured using a spectroradiometer (DAS 2100, Labsphere) associated with a specific software (Spectra Suite, Ocean Optics). Data were analyzed by two-way analysis of variance and Tukey test (p:s;O,05). The plasma are curing unit (Arc Light 11) showed the highest irradiance values through different restorative materiais, while the light source Ultralume 5, violet mode, showed the lowest irradiance values through different restorative materiais. The zirconia allowed higher light intensity passed through it when compared to lithium disilicate. The indirect restorative materiais tested showed distinct properties regarding the transmittance of light. Type of curing unit significantly influenced the Irradiance through different restorative materiais.
