Abstract Objective: To analyze patients' pain perception requiring endodontic treatment referred to a Dental Specialties Center. Material and Methods: Data was collected through a self-administered questionnaire for patients about their experience of pain and another for endodontists about the treatment performed. The results were analyzed descriptively using Pearson's Chi-square test and Fisher's Exact test, with Bonferroni correction (p≤0.05). Results: The median age of the patients was 39 years, and 71.1% were female. The median waiting time for treatment was five months. Pain was reported by 75.2% of patients, occurred more than one month earlier (63.6%), with moderate/severe intensity (66.9%), and most patients sought emergency treatment more than once (79.1%). In addition, pain was associated with sex (female; p=0.008); moderate/severe intensity (p<0.001); the number of times that patient had to go to the dentist because of the tooth treatment (twice or more; p=0.002); and type of tooth treated (posterior tooth; p=0.002). Conclusion: Severe pain episodes resulted in a repeated search for emergency services, which may overload the primary care service, especially if the waiting time for endodontic treatment is long.

Hypnosis is conceptualized as a modified state of consciousness, closer to waking than to sleep. It is configured as a great auxiliary therapeutic method with several benefits in dentistry, since it is possible to treat the patient in the office using this technique along with treatment in various dental specialties, in addition to allowing the dispensation of the use of medications sometimes. Thus, the objective of this work was to evaluate the knowledge of dentistry students about therapeutic hypnosis in dental treatments. It was an exploratory descriptive study with a quantitative approach carried out with students duly enrolled in the 1st, 5th and 10th periods of Dentistry courses at Centro Universitário de João Pessoa - UNIPÊ, in the Dentistry Course at Universidade Federal da Paraíba - UFPB, and in the Dentistry Course at Faculdade Integrada de Patos - FIP. The research sample was the same as the universe, consisting of 257 students. Data collection was carried out at the Federal University of Paraíba, UNIPÊ and at FIP, using a questionnaire containing objective questions related to knowledge about hypnosis and its application. Thus, it was found that the students were mostly female (70%) aged between 18 and 21 years old (45.1%), had no graduation (76%), had no knowledge about hypnosis techniques (59%) and did not even know the resolution of Integrative and Complementary Practices (CFO nº82 / 2008). However, most of the interviewees believed in the technique (75%), they wanted to take a course on hypnosis (77%) and believed that the dentist had the capacity to perform this technique (67%). When asked about the applications of hypnosis in the dental clinic, there was a predominance of fear, trauma, anxiety and tension control (17.9%). Regarding the main traumas in the office, it was observed that the majority had no traumas (43.7%), followed by the noise of the small engine (12.1%). It was concluded that the fact that a large portion of dentistry students do not have knowledge about hypnosis, may reflect the need to insert the content of Integrative and Complementary Practices in undergraduate courses in these institutions, in addition to the fact that few studies were literature with this theme emphasizing the importance of the present study...

Abstract Currently, the whole world is under the threat of the COVID-19 pandemic, and dentists are at high risk. The aim of this study was to investigate what kind of precautions Turkish dentists take in dental clinics during the COVID-19 pandemic. The study population consisted of dentists in Turkey. An online questionnaire (23 questions-57 items) was sent to a sample of Turkish dentists from March 16 to March 20, 2020. The questionnaire comprised a series of questions about dentists' demographic characteristics, their concerns, and the measures taken in dental clinics against COVID-19. This study included a total of 1,958 Turkish dentists. A total of 1,274 (65.1%) were general dentists, and 684 (34.9%) were specialists. Five hundred twenty-two (26.7%) dentists attended an informational meeting on COVID-19. Of these dentists, 69.8% were aware of COVID-19 according to their self-assessed knowledge scores. More than 90% of the dentists were concerned about themselves and their families. Only 12% of the dentists wore an N95 mask. Although Turkish dentists took some precautionary measures, they did not take enough precautions to protect themselves, the dental staff, and other patients from COVID-19. As the number of COVID-19 cases increased, the measures taken slightly increased in dental clinics as well. Dentists are strongly recommended to take maximum precautions in the clinical setting. The guidelines about the COVID-19 pandemic should be sent to all dentists by the regional and national dental associations.

The aim of the study is to present the current situation of Dentistry in the European Union, with regard to the training, international mobility of dentists, professional regulation and dental specialties. In order to do so, a documental analysis and review of the literature was carried out. Only scientific articles published in full, in Portuguese or English, from 2009 to 2018, that were related to the research topic were included. The search for the articles was carried out in the SciELO, LILACS and PubMed databases, through the combination of the descriptors: "Work", "Dentistry", "Higher Education", "European Union". The study showed that the European Union has in one legislation rules that regulate the mobility of dentists, although the issue of the language seems to be an obstacle to such circulation. Furthermore, the harmonization of the formation of Dentistry was agreed among members of the bloc. In this sense, the European Union sends messages to MERCOSUL, group in which Brazil is a member. The absorption by MERCOSUL of the successful experiences and outcomes already found by the European Union is somehow interesting and necessary, in a matter of higher education and the mobility of dentists, considering the peculiarities that compose it (AU).

The article analyzes the motivations and paths of the process that leads to the choice of Oral Maxillofacial Surgery and Traumatology and the professional performance of specialists in this field and develop this activity in a city in the state of Santa Catarina, Brazil. It is a study of qualitative approach and exploratory and descriptive nature, whose data were collected by semi-structured interviews with 05 surgeon dentists who were examined through the adjusted thematic analysis. When inquired about the motivation that led them to choose such specialty, the participants revealed: the versatile character of the field what provides it with an integrative nature and not only the reconstructive one; the culture experienced and produced since early age; identification; and preference. The paths traced upon the process of choice and professional performance have been influenced by the good relationship with the teachers, concomitant with a good theoretical background in surgery, monitoring participation; extracurricular activity (internship); and evidence of personal satisfaction. Within the public and private mix, testimonies have signaled the expansion of the field, the trend to the private market saturation, the transit between markets, quality education and the merit of taking advantage of what is offered, besides notes about the difficulty of entering the public sector yet the demand is a reality. The Unified Health System (SUS) Odontology Specialties Center has been introduced as locus of a promising offer of work and as a strategy to start the career. New qualitative studies of bioethical approach are needed and opportune (AU).

The Dental Specialties Centers (CEO) are a strategy of the National Oral Health Policy to assure the secondary care in Dentistry, constituting referral units for the primary attention. This cross-sectional study analyzed the characteristics of users and attendances in the specialty of Endodontics of the CEO at Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul. A questionnaire was designed, based on the Oral Health Specialties Handout, besides questions that characterized the profile of users, and was applied to the trainees at the CEO at every completed endodontic treatment. The sample included 48 patients, obtained by convenience, inconsecutive census sampling, with conclusion of 56 endodontic treatments during the period August 2016 to July 2017. The profile of users was predominantly females (62.50%), in the age range 31 to 50 years (41.67%) of White ethnicity 64.58%); the teeth with greatest treatment needs were the molars (67.86%); and most cases were in conditions compatible with those advocated by the handout. The treatments were completed in 2 or 3 sessions (66.67%), and the waiting time of users for attendance was shorter than 6 months (83.33%). The patients were indicated using a referral form (93.75%). The study revealed data that may contribute to the development of strategies to broaden the productivity by investments in new Technologies and equipment, aiming to reduce the number of sessions required for finalization of endodontic treatments, providing attendance to a larger number of patients and reducing the waiting time (AU).

Sports Dentistry is a new dental specialty whose goal is to prevent, treat and rehabilitate athletes. One of the activities of the dentist that acts with the Sports Dentistry is the confection of individualized facial masks and mouthguards. There is a greater number of scientific research on mouthguards than on facial masks, as a result of which mouthguards are normalized and facial masks not yet. They are used only after the athlete has suffered traumas, so with their use it prevents the bone from suffering refraction or displacement and allows the athlete not to stay temporarily away from the practice of sports... RESUMO

Objective: To analyze the indicators of planning and management actions for the work process organization in Centers of Dental Specialties (CEO) presented in the external evaluation tool to the Improving Access and Quality of CEO - AIQP-CEO Program and to provide a follow-up and monitoring tool of goals. Material and Methods: Crosssectional study with the use of secondary data from the external evaluation of 930 CEOs in Brazil. A descriptive analyses of indicators identified in the "Planning and managing actions for work process organization in CEO" sub-dimension was performed. It provides two monitoring tools: monthly production for each specialty, and monthly minimal and mandatory performance of CEO goals. Results: It was shown that 85.4% of CEO teams have made the monitoring of the goals established to each offered specialty, and 73.1% have performed self-assessment in the last six months, in which most of the teams (647 - 69.6%) have used the Self-Assessment to the Improving Access and Quality Program - SAIQP. It was demonstrated that of the 680 teams that performed selfassessment, 612 (65.8%) consider the results in the teamwork organization. Conclusion: The PMAQ CEO external evaluation brought important information to the qualification process of health services. Concerning the planning, the majority of teams performed the follow-up of goals and self-assessment, and they used the self-assessment results in the teamwork organization. According to results, some tools should be used to support CEO teams in the follow-up of the monthly production by specialty and in the monitoring of goals.

RESUMO

Objective: To evaluate the different management aspects of Centers for Dental Specialties (CEO) in Brazil. Material and Methods: Quantitative study with analysis of secondary data. The results of external evaluation of the first PMAQ-CEO cycle were considered, especially those related to planning and self-assessment, demand organization, work process, human resources as well as the availability of supplies/materials/dental equipment. The selected data were analyzed based on the calculation of proportions using the Microsoft Office Excel and Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) programs. Results: The planning of actions in CEOs is conducted in nearly 80% of units, with the participation of dental surgeons, receiving support, mainly, from the local dental health or state public manager. The access to CEO is given, mostly, in a referenced or mixed (referenced and spontaneous) form. Only 49% of CEOs offer permanent education actions for workers. The work management process has been guided by quality standards of PMAQ-CEO for 77% of managers. Conclusion: The study allowed perceiving the presence of an often shared management, on the CEO organization, on self-evaluation process, planning, demand organization and work process, as well as human resources and infrastructure, showing conformity with the Oral Health National Policy guidelines. However, the results show that some problems with regard to the evaluation as work routine and management of access to CEOs still persist, pointing to the need for further studies and effort of managers to overcome them.

RESUMO

Objective: To evaluate the prevalence and socio demographic factors associated with failed dental appointments among dental patients in a government dental clinic. Material and Methods: This was a cross-sectional study of 419 participants who were non-first clinic attendees at a government dental clinic in Enugu, Nigeria. Data was collected on socio-demographic profile, mode of transportation and reasons for failed appointment, using a pretested structured questionnaire. Bi-variate analysis was conducted to test the association between study participants' age, sex, occupation, mode of transportation and failed dental appointment using Chi-square test and p<0.05 was considered significant. Results: The age of the study participants ranged from 5 years to 90 years. More females (57.8%) than males (42.2%) participated in the study. The prevalence of failed appointment was 27.7%. The major reasons for failed appointments were "being busy with other activities" (12.4%) and "far distance" (6.9%). Only 0.7% of the study participants received telephone calls as reminder. There was no statistically significant association between age (p=0.40), sex (p=0.12), level of education (p=0.40), occupation (p=0.52), mode of transportation (p=0.71) and failed dental appointment. Conclusion: The prevalence of failed dental appointment was high in this population. Being busy and far distance were the commonest reasons for failed appointments. Very few study participants were reminded of their appointment.

RESUMO

Objective: To describe satisfaction, resolution and social participation of users regarding the service offered in Brazilian Centers for Dental Specialties (CEOs). Material and Methods: An analysis was made of the first phase of PMAQ-CEO, developed during 2014, in which 8,897 users were interviewed. Module III of the instrument external evaluation was used, considering the socio-demographic characterization of the assisted population, and an analysis of satisfaction, resolution and social control of Brazilian CEOs. The bivariate and multivariate Poisson regression analysis with robust variance was used (α<0.05). Results: The profile of interviewed users is female, from the Northeastern region, brown color, living in the urban zone, incomplete elementary school, income of up to two minimum wages and resident of area covered by the family health strategy. The overall CEO rating is "good" (46.1%) or "very good" (49.2%). The score (0 to 10) given to reception staff and dentists was, respectively, 9.31±1.32 and 9.52±1.02. Among subjects who completed treatment (33.3%), the resolution was 95.3%. Although 89.1% stated they never needed to file a complaint, 68.4% did not know the Unified Health System ombudsman. The positive evaluation of CEO was associated with the good evaluation of professionals involved (p<0.05) and the absence of treatment interruption due to lack of material (p=0.037). Conclusion: The satisfaction of users with the services of Centers for Dental Specialties is high and treatments offered are resolutive. Social control tools need to be better known by users.

RESUMO

Objective: To evaluate the quality of Centers for Dental Specialties (CEO) using an electronic tool - the CEO webpage. Material and Methods: Evaluative research was carried out through the use of a web-based tool, which has two modules with forms for the evaluation of quality of CEO components to Managers and Professionals. The tool generates classification scores and recommendation letters according to the score obtained. Satisfactory classification was used for scores equal to or above 7.0 and unsatisfactory for scores lower than 7.0. Representatives of manager and professionals of CEOs who attended the invitation of the research were qualified to use the CEO webpage. Portal data were analyzed in a descriptive way and the average scores were tested according to service and context variables. Results: Thirty-eight health facilities were evaluated. The average score for CEOs was rated as satisfactory for both the Manager and Professional modules. However, when quality components were evaluated, there was higher concentration of unsatisfactory scores to those related to the work process, particularly to the quality components of Personnel Management; Social control and Financing; and, Organizational Criteria. Conclusion: The CEO webpage, for instantly generating evaluation and recommendations for change, is easy to handle and lacks minimal technological resources (computer with access to the internet network), has become a tool for information management that allows immediate decision making. In addition, they can make a major contribution to planning / management support in identifying critical aspects of the service that impair quality, with strong potential to serve as supplementary institutional support to PMAQ / CEO. Initiatives such as the CEO webpage should be encouraged and disseminated for use within Unified Health System.

RESUMO

Objective: To analyze the regulation of access to Centers for Dental Specialties (CEO) in the 1st cycle of Program for Improving Access and Quality of Centers for Dental Specialties (PMAQ-CEO), specifically the waiting time for the first consultation in association with socioeconomic and demographic factors of users and the characteristics of services. Material and Methods: The quantitative database of the 1st cycle PMAQCEO external evaluation was used, with question directed to the CEO user (Module III - 3.1 and 3.2), which sought to identify user characteristics and access to CEO. To obtain data, a field phase was carried out between months of February to June 2014 in 930 CEOs in all Brazilian states. Results: Users who obtained the first appointment within thirty days of waiting were those who had family incomes above 10 minimum wages; which showed higher schooling; appointment scheduling by telephone made directly to the CEO; and that the consultation was accomplished by "squeeze in" option. Conclusion: It was observed that aspects related to schooling, family income and primary health care coverage influence the waiting time to obtain the first consultation in CEO. There were several ways of referencing of users, and those who performed better were those who shared accountability for the appointments between service and user.
