This research was conducted among older people living in philanthropic Long-Term Care Facilities (LTCF) in Belo Horizonte, Minas Gerais. The cross-sectional study investigated the association between oral health indicators, oral hygiene, and the level of dependence on oral hygiene with the nutritional condition and functional status of older peoples aged 60 years or more living in LTCF. Data collection involved reviewing medical records, conducting interviews with the elderly residents or their proxies, and performing physical and oral examinations. These examinations were carried out by six trained researchers (kappa: 0.73-0.95). The dependent variable was the functional condition of the elderly, which was determined through the assessment of frailty, impairment in activities and participation, level of functional dependence, and sarcopenia. The functional status served as the dependent variable, evaluated as a latent construct resulting from frailty, disability, functional dependence, and sarcopenia. Meanwhile, calf circumference indicated the nutritional condition. The oral health variables included the number of natural teeth, oral hygiene, chewing performance, and dependence on oral hygiene. Gender, age, and the number of comorbidities were considered as covariates. The relationships between these variables were assessed using structural equation modeling. Out of the 307 identified older people, 295 had their functional condition assessed, and 194 underwent oral examinations. The majority of the older people were either frail or pre-frail, with a high degree of disability and dependence, and half of them exhibited low muscle strength. The analysis revealed that dependence on brushing and the accumulation of biofilm were associated with greater functional impairment. Additionally, a larger calf circumference was linked to less functional decline. A higher number of natural teeth was positively related to better chewing performance, which, in turn, was associated with a larger calf circumference. There was a significant indirect relationship between the number of natural teeth and calf circumference, mediated by chewing performance. It can be concluded that a poor oral health condition is associated with worse functional status in older peolpe living in LTCF. Six researchers documented their personal impressions about the fieldwork in a diary, which was used as the corpus for the qualitative study analysis. Researchers filled out a questionnaire with open-ended questions, reporting their significant experiences during the last month of data collection. The material was subjected to content analysis by two researchers. The identified themes included: LTCF adherence to the research; institutional routine in the research process; an approach guided by clinical-functional profiles; the central role of caregivers; researcher skills, and oral care in LTCF. Research in the context of LTCF among elderly individuals with clinical-functional impairments presents specific methodological and operational challenges, requiring a diverse skill set from the researche.

RESUMO

ABSTRACT Introduction: The efficiency of clinical procedures is based on practical and theoretical knowledge. Countless daily information is available to the orthodontist, but it is up to this professional to know how to select what really has an impact on clinical practice. Evidence-based orthodontics ends up requiring the clinician to know the basics of biostatistics to understand the results of scientific publications. Such concepts are also important for researchers, for correct data planning and analysis. Objective: This article aims to present, in a clear way, some essential concepts of biostatistics that assist the clinical orthodontist in understanding scientific research, for an evidence-based clinical practice. In addition, an updated version of the tutorial to assist in choosing the appropriate statistical test will be presented. This PowerPoint® tool can be used to assist the user in finding answers to common questions about biostatistics, such as the most appropriate statistical test for comparing groups, choosing graphs, performing correlations and regressions, analyzing casual, random or systematic errors. Conclusion: Researchers and clinicians must acquire or recall essential concepts to understand and apply an appropriate statistical analysis. It is important that journal readers and reviewers can identify when statistical analyzes are being inappropriately used.

Aim: To outline the profile of the Scientific Initiation advisors of the School of Dentistry at the Federal University of Minas Gerais over a 10-year period. Methods: A retrospective assessment was made regarding the education, career, and experience of postgraduate and undergraduate guidance rendered by the institution's faculty who advised students who were fellows of the Scientific Initiation Program from 2006 to 2016. Based on information from registered curricula in the CNPq Lattes platform, the intellectual production of teachers was analyzed, both quantitatively and qualitatively, according to Qualis 2015. To evaluate the correlation between the amount of Scientific Initiation guidance rendered and the other numerical variables, the Spearman correlation coefficient was used, and to verify if there was a difference between the amount of Scientific Initiation guidance rendered between the categories of categorical variables, the Mann-Whitney and Kruskal-Wallis tests were used. Results: Just over 35% (n = 44) of the total number of teachers of the institution, with different degrees, tenure, and career levels, allocated in the four departments, advised fellows during this period, of which 18 received ongoing guidance, almost 90% of which were linked to the Postgraduate Program. The areas responsible for the largest number of scholarships in effect cane from the fields of Pediatric Dentistry and Social and Preventive Dentistry. The amount of completed and ongoing Scientific Initiation guidance rendered per advisor showed a significant positive correlation (rs, p < 0.05) with qualified scientific output (≥ B3) and with the amount of stricto sensu postgraduate guidance rendered, but was not correlated with other productions and advice. Conclusion: The profile of Scientific Initiation advisors between 2006-2016 was diverse, with different areas of activity, career levels, and titles. However, we observed that participation in the program is minimal, given the total number of professors with a degree, capacity to provide advice, and the number of undergraduate students registered at the institution. This is mainly due to the number of Scientific Initiation scholarships failing to contemplate all teachers who enrolled in the program.

RESUMO

In 2012, the recognition of the specialty of Temporomandibular Disorders and Orofacial Pain completed ten years. Given this scenario, it is extremely important to track the current situation of this field of knowledge in Brazil, specifically in the area of research and training. We hope to discuss the importance of the recognition of this specialty and the inclusion of these subjects in undergraduate programs in Dentistry. Objective: The objective of this study is to perform a bibliometric survey of researches regarding Temporomandibular Disorders and Orofacial Pain conducted in the country, determine the number of specialization courses in Orofacial Pain and the number of specialists in the field. Methods: The bibliometric survey was conducted based on the Dissertations Portal of Coordination for the Improvement of Higher education Personnel (CAPES) and on PubMed. The panorama of the field of Orofacial Pain and Temporomandibular disorders in Brazil was determined by searching on the website of the Brazilian Council of Dentistry. Results: We found 731 theses and dissertations with Temporomandibular Disorders and Orofacial Pain as the main subjects; 81 accredited/recognized Courses on Orofacial Pain and Temporomandibular Dysfunction completed; 8 accredited/recognized Specialization Courses on Orofacial Pain and Temporomandibular Dysfunction still in progress, and 1,064 registered specialists in Orofacial Pain and Temporomandibular Dysfunction in the Brazilian Council of Dentistry. Search in the PUBMED database yielded 576 articles published with the participation of Brazilian researchers as first authors and/or co-authors in the period from 2000 to 2013. From this amount, only 5 were published in Portuguese, while all the others were published in english. We can also notice that the number of published articles increases over time. Conclusion: The number of researches related to temporomandibular disorders has increased over the ...
