RESUMO

ABSTRACT OBJECTIVE To carry out a critical review of the literature on the use of race, color, and ethnicity in the field of public health dentistry. METHODS A literature search was conducted in MEDLINE via PubMed for articles published between 2014 and 2019. Using a data extraction form, we collected information on (1) bibliographic characteristics of the selected papers; (2) race, color, and ethnicity of the study participants and their sociodemographic profiles; and (3) the extent to which the original publications followed the recommendations by Kaplan and Bennett (2003) on the use of race, color, or ethnicity in biomedical research. RESULTS Our initial search identified 2,032 articles, 53 of which were selected for full-text examination and assessment following pre-established eligibility criteria. Around 60% (n = 32) of the included studies did not justify the use of race, color, or ethnicity in their analyses, and 9% (n = 5) took these variables as indicators of the participants' genetic makeup. On the other hand, 68% (n = 36) of the reviewed papers considered race, color, and ethnicity as risk markers - not risk factors - for adverse oral health outcomes, whereas 80% (n = 42) adjusted racial/ethnic inequities for a range of socioeconomic and demographic factors in statistical models. Only one study (2%) explicitly took race, color, or ethnicity as a contextually dependent dimension of the participants' identities. CONCLUSION Our findings indicate that research on oral health inequities is often based on reductionist and stigmatizing conceptions of race, color, or ethnicity. Such harmful misconceptions should be replaced with anti-racist narratives in order to effectively address racial oral health inequities.

RESUMO

ABSTRACT OBJECTIVE To estimate the evolution of the prevalence of SARS-CoV-2 virus infection among residents aged 18 years or over in the municipality of São Paulo. METHODS This is a population-based household survey conducted every 15 days, between June and September 2020, and January and February 2021. In total, the study comprised 11 phases. The presence of antibodies against SARS-CoV-2 was identified in venous blood using a lateral flow test, Wondfo Biotech. In the last phase, the researchers combined it with an immunoenzymatic test, Euroimmun. The participants also answered a semi-structured questionnaire on sociodemographic and economic factors, and on social distancing measures. Prevalence estimates and the 95% confidence interval were estimated according to regions, Human Development Index, sex, age group, ethnicity, education, income, and variables associated with risk or prevention of infection. To compare the frequencies among the categories of each variable, the chi-square test with Rao-Scott correction was used, considering a significance level of 5%. RESULTS In total, 23,397 individuals were interviewed and had their samples collected. The estimated prevalence of antibodies against SARS-CoV-2 ranged from 9.7% (95%CI: 7.9-11.8%) to 25.0% (95%CI: 21.7-28.7). The prevalence of individuals with antibodies against the virus was higher among black and brown people, people with lower schooling and income, and among residents of regions with lower Human Development Index. The lowest prevalences were associated with recommended measures of disease protection. The proportion of asymptomatic infection was 45.1%. CONCLUSION The estimated prevalence of the infection was lower than the cumulative incidence variation, except for the last phase of the study. The differences in prevalence estimates observed among subpopulations showed social inequality as a risk of infection. The lower prevalence observed among those who could follow prevention measures reinforce the need to maintain social distancing measures as a way to prevent SARS-CoV-2 infection.

RESUMO

Objective: Forensic dentistry has used some methods for the human identification process. However, there is a need to study characteristics that are able to perform identification more specifically, increasing accuracy. Considering the role of dental arch assessment in prediction of gender and ethnicity, the purpose of this study was to assess the volume of pulp chamber as a mean to obtain new forensic evidence. Material and methods: For this task, 1.190 cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) images were retrospectively selected and subdivided according to the population number, gender, age and ethnicity. All DICOM files were imported to the open-source software ITK-SNAP®(http://www.itksnap.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php). The segmentation process was performed in all pulp chamber aiming to obtain pulp tissue ́s volume. Results: As a result, the pulp chamber volume of mandibular canine teeth showed to be larger in white population than in non-white (P-value = 0.003) and in male individuals in comparison with female (P-value = 0.038). Conclusion: These results, however, must be confirmed by future studies with a larger sample size and by the assessment of other variables, including texture analysis and density of dental tissues. (AU)

Aim: This study aimed to evaluate the knowledge of parents visiting a specialized dental center in Ajman on permanent tooth avulsion and the required first aid procedure to achieve better prognoses. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted in Ajman Emirate, UAE. Three hundred eighty-eight parents from three nationalities (Emirati, Egyptian and Indian) residing in UAE answered a constructed questionnaire that included demographic information related to the participants and questions related to permanent tooth avulsion and the required first steps for its management. Results: Study findings reflect deficiencies in the following areas. Of the 388 parents, (236, 60.8%) had poor knowledge about permanent tooth avulsion. Parents who had previous knowledge obtained information from unsupported sources, such as friends (145, 37.4%). Out of 388 parents, (324, and 83.5%) would not replant the tooth. Finally, the majority of the participants did not know the proper media to store the avulsed permanent tooth with one-third of parents choosing cotton or water (142, 36.6%). Conclusion: This study showed a lack of knowledge regarding permanent tooth avulsion among parents from the major nationalities residing in UAE. However, the respondents represent major differences regarding related to knowledge, replant, and storage of avulsed permanent teeth

(AU)

Objective: To compare the linear and angular measurements using as a parameter the Vigorito analysis in Leucoderm, Xanthoderm, and Japanese-Brazilian people to obtain the average normal values, to compare the values obtained and the differences between groups and sex dimorphism. Material and Methods: The retrospective sample included 103 lateral films of young Brazilian people with normal occlusion. It was divided into three groups: Group I with 38 Leucoderm subjects, Group II with 33 Xanthoderm subjects, and Group III with 32 Japanese-Brazilian subjects. Lateral films were scanned using Scan Maker i800 scanner, and CephX 4.5.4. was used to measure the cephalometric variables specific to the analysis, and they were statistically compared. Age compatibility was analyzed using ANOVA test followed by Tukey test. Sexual dimorphism was evaluated with independent t test, and the intergroup comparisons were performed with ANCOVA followed by Tukey test. Results: Leucoderm and Japanese-Brazilian female group presented statistically significant differences for sexual dimorphism, showing a higher facial convexity and lower mandibular incisor less protruded. Besides that, Japanese-Brazilian subjects presented a significantly lower maxillary protrusion when compared to Xanthoderm and Leucoderm subjects. The latter group also had lower incisor protrusion when compared to Japanese-Brazilian and Xanthoderm, respectively. Conclusions: Leucoderm, Xanthoderm, and Japanese-Brazilian subjects with normal occlusion presented dentoskeletal, dental and facial differences, and gender differences related to the mandibular symphysis. Thus, the individualization of cephalometric patterns in different groups is justified. (AU)

RESUMO

Aim: To investigate the percentage of correctness (PC) of the Nasal Index (NI) in human skeletons for determination of sex, ancestry and estimation of age in the Brazilian population. Methods: This was a cross-sectional study of 173 human skulls belonging to the Piracicaba Dental School. 93 skeletons were males and 80 females; 34 were aged up to 39 years, 56 between 40 and 59 years, and 83 60 years or older; 96 were from white individuals, 49 were from mixed-race and 28 from black individuals. High-precision digital caliper was used to measure nasal height (NH=ANS-nasion) and the maximum nasal width (NW) values, which were applied into the formula NI=NW/NHx100. The data were submitted to discriminant analysis and Student's t test with equal variances, Mann-Whitney, F (ANOVA), Tukey and Kruskal Wallis, 5% significance level. Results: Dominant nasal type in the Brazilian population was the mesorine. Males showed nasal height and width values greater than those of females, with statistically significant differences in all measurements (p≤0.021) and PC of 76.6%. Similar nasal measurements were found regardless of age (p>0.05), with PC of 41.7%. Ancestral analysis revealed that black individuals have greater nasal width (26.35) and nasal index (53.67) than white ones (24.60 and 49.25), while mixed-race individuals showed intermediate values (25.36 and 52.13) (p<0.05). Nevertheless, these measurements presented an estimated PC of 54.3%. Conclusion: The Nasal Index can be better used for sex determination than for estimation of age and ancestry in the Brazilian population, as the latter showed intermediate and low percentage of correctness, respectively

RESUMO

Objective: The aim of this study was to determine if Bolton's tooth size ratios can be applied to Mediterranean, Japanese and Japanese-Brazilian populations. Materials and methods: The sample comprised 90 pairs of dental casts of untreated individuals with normal occlusion, divided into 3 groups according to ethnical characteristics: White (30 Mediterranean descendant subjects, with a mean age of 13.64 years), Japanese (30 subjects with Japanese ancestry, with a mean age of 15.63 years) and Japanese-Brazilian (30 Japanese-Brazilian subjects, with a mean age of 13.96 years). A digital caliper was used to measure the maxillary and mandibular mesiodistal widths from first molar to first molar on each dental cast. The anterior and overall tooth size ratios were calculated. T test was applied for comparisons between Bolton standards and the ethnical groups for anterior and overall ratios. Results: Only the Japanese-Brazilian group showed significantly greater ratios than Bolton standards. Conclusion: It was concluded that Bolton's ratios are not applicable to the Japanese-Brazilian population. Therefore, it is suggested that Bolton's ratios may not be suitable for different populations (AU)

Introduction: cephalometry is one of the auxiliary elements with great importance in diagnosis and orthodontic planning.

Aim: The objective of this study is to compare the knowledge, practice and awareness of oral hygiene among three different age groups (15-30, 30-45 and 45-60-year-olds) of the Saudi population in Sakaka. Methods: 629 subjects aged between 15-60 years were randomly selected. Data were collected by self-administered structured questionnaires and analysis was done using the SPSS statistical software. The subjects were divided in to A group (e”30 years), B group (d”31 years - e”45 years) and C group (d”46 years). Results: 30.7% (A group) of subjects preferred commercial bush to clean their teeth (p<0.001), while 5.9% (B and C groups) choose Miswak for cleaning. Group B people preferred brushing only in the morning (24.5%), while 16.5% of group A respondents preferred brushing twice a day. 23.1% of group A subjects responded that brushing regularly was the ideal way to avoid caries (p<0.05). 51.8% of all age groups had no idea on the effects of fluoride on caries disease. The reason to visit dentist was mainly for extraction (30.5%) followed by pain relief (28.9%). 62.62% (p<0.05) subjects had carious lesions, whereas 56.6% subjects had fractured teeth. The use of tobacco (16.7%) was highly prevalent in group B subjects (p<0.05). Tea consumption among A group subjects (49.6%) more than other age groups (p<0.001). 81.2% subjected were free from gingival bleeding (p<0.05). Most of the people (48.6%) preferred frequent dental camps in response to their opinion to improve dental facilities in Sakaka, Al-Jouf. Conclusions: The present study shows that poorer knowledge and oral health conditions among 30-45-year-old subjects (B group) compared to the other two groups. Generally, these data may be important in the evaluation of the past and planning of future oral health prevention and treatment programs targeting the high-risk populations.

Introduction: McNamara Jr.s cephalometric analysis is an aiding means to diagnose dental and skeletal discrepancies and is widely used, as it provides a guiding diagnosis for surgical procedures to be performed or for the use of functional devices. Quite a few studies have already showed that different ethnic groups have different cephalometric patterns. Thus, single characteristics should be respected as to support the diagnosis and help the treatment plan for different ethnic groups and their different patterns of miscegenation. Objective: Obtain mean normal values used in the cephalometric analysis of McNamara Jr. for adolescent Japanese-Brazilian descents with normal occlusion and also compared this sample with similar samples of Brazilian-Whites and Brazilian-Japaneses. Methods: Cephalometric films were used from 40 Brazilian-Whites, 32 Japanese-Brazilians and 33 Brazilian- Japaneses descents from the file of the Orthodontic Department of Dental School of Bauru University of São Paulo. The three samples were composed of individuals with normal occlusion and pleasant profile and were divided into genders to help the comparison. The data were statistically analyzed by using the ANOVA, t test and ANCOVA. Results: There was significant difference between Brazilian-Whites, Japanese-Brazilians and Brazilian-Japaneses descents only at the lip-nasal angle of males. Japanese-Brazilians descents displayed an intermediate value between Brazilian-Whites and Brazilian-Japaneses. Conclusion: The samples presented similar characteristics in the studied variables and only showed a significant statistical difference at the lip-nasal angle for males.

RESUMO

Aim: The aim of this study was to determine the morphologic characteristics of the dental arches in the ethnic group “Mazahua” and mestizo teenagers from central Mexico. Methods: A sample of 80 Mazahua and 80 mestizo teenagers with normal occlusion, divided into two age groups, were evaluated. A digital caliper was used to measure in cast models the intercanine width, intermolar width, length and perimeter of the arch, occlusal intermaxillary curve (of Spee), overjet, and overbite. A comparative analysis with Student’s t-test was applied between gender and population groups. Results: Comparison of the dental arches between Mazahua and mestizo teenagers revealed that statistically significant differences existed with respect to most of the measurements. In most cases, they were greater in males; the Mazahua teenagers had intercanine and intermolar widths greater than mestizo teenagers. Conclusions: Each group has a characteristic dental arch form. The ethnic group Mazahua has squared arches, whereas the mestizo teenagers have oval arches, which give them their particular facial characteristics. These findings indicate that population-specific standards are necessary for clinical assessments.

Actually, metropolitan areas have diverse populations, with a need to recognize that a standard of facial esthetics might not be appropriate when making orthodontics diagnostic and treatment plans for patients from various racial and ethnic backgrounds that migrated to distinct geographic bounds. With the purpose of using a specific cephalometric standard for white, black and afrocaucasian young Brazilian descents, this study aimed to obtain mean normal values to skeletal, dental and soft tissue cephalometric variables and to compare the values obtained among the ethnic groups and to verify the presence of sexual dimorphism. The sample comprised 146 lateral cephalograms of untreated young Brazilian subjects, presenting "normal occlusion", divided into three groups: Group 1- 50 White subjects (25 of each sex), at a mean age of 13, 17 years; Group 2- 40 afrocaucasian descents (20 of each sex), at a mean age of 13, 12 years; Group 3- 56 Black subjects (28 of each sex), at a mean age of 13, 24 years. Evaluation of intergroup compatibility regarding age and comparison of values of cephalometric measurements were performed by one-way ANOVA followed by Tukey test. Independent t tests were used to determine sexual dimorphism. Blacks presented the greatest maxillary protrusion, greatest labial tipping of mandibular incisors, and the most prominent upper and lower lips; afrocaucasian descents presented intermediate values, and whites presented the lowest values, with significant differences among the three groups evaluated. Besides, blacks and afrocaucasians, when related to whites, presented a greater mandibular protrusion, more horizontal growth pattern and more protruded and proclinated maxillary incisors. However, blacks, when compared to afrocaucasian and whites, presented a greater maxillomandibular discrepancy, a greater facial convexity, a greater protrusion of mandibular incisors and a more acute nasolabial angle. There was sexual dimorphism in some cephalometric variables in the three ethnic groups.
