greenhouse effect on the earth is identified by the difference between the effective radiating temperature of the planet and is surface temperature. The difference between the energy emitted by the surface and that emitted upward to space by the upper atmosphere quantified it; it can therefore be defined as the long wave energy trapped in the atmosphere (AU)

RESUMO

Basic components of global carbon cycle are described which are treated in existing high resolution global numerical models. With model supercomputers the models give a fairly realistic reproduction of the observed large scale structure od geochemical tracers in the ocean and thus provide a reliable tool for prognoses (AU)

RESUMO

impact of sulphur from fossil fuel combustion on the environment is well recognised. This is particularly so in Europe, North America and other regions of high fossil fuel consumption. On the other hand the role of sulphur gases, especially dimenthyl sulphide (DMS), produced be marine phytoplankton on environmental processes is less well established (AU)

RESUMO

Methane and the numerous nonmenthane hydrocarbons (NMHC) are important participants in the photochemical reaction cycles in the troposphere. methane is with a global a mixing ratio of 1.7 ppm the by far most abundant and also most important hydrocarbon compound in the troposphere. As a result of the long atmospheric residence time of methane, its distribution is relatively uniform and the gradient between the northern and southern hemisphere is only about 0.1 ppm (AU)

RESUMO

most areas of the world temperature and precipitation are perceived as the key climatic elements. However, these elements are not necesarily the best indicators of climatic evolution. In search for such indicators, we have to broaden our concept of climate change, to not only include temperature and precipitation changes (locally, regionally an d globally), but also associated changes of the atmospheric circulation. Related changes in e.g. sea level and glacier extend are also of interest. An attempt is made to list the most important changes of the coupled climatete system over the last 100 years (AU)

RESUMO

More that 70

of solar energy imput to the earth's climate system is obsorbed at the surface albedo as the ratio of reflected to incident radiation determines the amount of solar energy for conversion into heat. The reflection of solar radiation from many surfaces is found to be a strong function of wavelength and depends upon the state of the surface, Changes in surface albedo are cause be variable snow cover and ice extent and be surface changes due to anthropogenically induced desertification, deforestation and greenhouse warming (AU)
