O passado está presente: Hahnemann / The past is present: Hahnemann

Uma busca de conceitos velhos, mas não envelhecidos, com a ajuda preciosa de um grande estudioso. E foi então que, a 10 de abril de 1755, em Meissen, um lugarejo da Saxônia que se jactava de ser o melhor produtor de porcelana da época, nasceu Christian Frederico Samuel Hahnemann. Seu pai, apesar de ser o melhor pintor da fábrica, não tinha recursos para custearlhe a escola, mas dado o interesse e a inteligência do pequeno Samuel, o gerente assumiu o custeio de seus estudos, pois reconhecia nele uma capacidade e uma inteligência que não eram comuns. Após cursar os primeiros anos na escola local, aos 16 anos de idade (1771), o jovem Hahnemann foi admitido na famosa Escola de Saint Afra, dedicada apenas à instrução dos filhos de nobres. Como escola altamente aristocrática, recebeu ali excelente orientação no que tangia às línguas clássicas e modernas, dominando com facilidade além do alemão, sua língua mãe, o inglês, francês, árabe, espanhol, sírio, latim, grego, hebreu e o caldeu. Consta que nesta escola já tenha lido o "Corpus Hippocraticum", iniciando assim sua carreira devotada às ciências.

O papel da homeopatia na Alemanha Nazista: uma avaliação histórica / Role of homeopathy in Nazi Germany: a historical assessment

Uma das questões ainda polêmicas diz respeito da relação entre homeopatia e os homeopatas e o nazismo. O presente artigo representa resultados parciais de uma pesquisa em andamento, abordando vários dos tópicos em debate. Além da menção dos casos específicos de homeopatas perseguidos pelo sistema e aspectos controversos sobre a experimentação de medicamentos, particularmente em humanos, discorre-se sobre o contexto histórico: inicialmente a conjuntura político-social favoreceu as medicinas ditas alternativas, marginalizadas até essa época pela medicina oficial. Destaca-se que a palavra “homeopatia” não aparece nem uma única vez nos registros dos processos médicos de Nuremberg. (AU)

A still polemical issue concerns the relationship between homeopathy and homeopaths and Nazism. This article represents partial results of an ongoing research and addresses some of the topics under debate. Besides a discussion the specific instance of homeopaths pursued by the regime and controversial aspects on experimentation of remedies, particularly on human beings, it elaborates on the historical context: initially, the political and social conjuncture favored so-called alternative medicines, which had been marginalized until that moment by conventional medicine. It is highlighted that there is not one only mention to the word “homeopathy” in the records of Nurnberg´s medical trials.

Samuel Hahnemann

Christian Friedrich Samuel Hahnemann was born on 10 April 1755 in Meissen, the son of a porcelain painter. The family was educat but the economic climate at that time meant that they lived in dire poverty. Samuel's father was unable to afford school fees. Fortunately the rector of the school recognised Samuel 's ability and allowed him to attend withoud paying. He became a fluent linguist, teaching his fellows Hebrew when only 13 and, later at medical school in Leipzig, supported himself by traslation scientific papers. From this work he managed to save enough to transfer to Vienna, the premier medical school in Europe. Here his diligence and ability were widely noted among the staff.

August Bier and German homoeopathy in the early 20th century

At the end of the last century, debate on the pros and cons of homoeopathy was lively in Germany. By 1920 it had died down almost entirely and homoeopathy seemed to have gone into a decline. In 1925 the prominent surgeon August Bier published a paper which immediately revived the discussion and helped homoeopathy become a prevalent form of treatment again in Germany. His paper and the at times emotional exchanges that followed were directly responsible for a change of climate in the discussion between homoeopaths and representatives of the convencional school, a number of clinical investigations into the question of clinical efficacy and the creation of a university chair of homoeopathy in 1929. Reading this story one can hardly help being impressed and amused by similarities between then and now

Publicity generated by an International LMHI Congress

The International Conference of the LMHI in Koeln (Cologne), Germany in May 1991 had a considerable publicity effect. 2 million readers were reached through articles in the daily press. Several large medical and health journals and magazines informed ca. 500,000 readers. Radio stations reached several hundred thousand listeners. In the homoeopathic press, 19 journals reported the conference. They printed more than 80 items, including lectures given at the conference, reports on the conference, comments, letters to the editor, etc. The most important dignitaries of Western Germany sent greetings. The reasons for the conference being successful in the eyes of homoeopathic physicians were as follows: - high quality scientific and cultural programme - good interpreters and good quality techinical equipment in the conference centre and - location of the conference in the most densely populated area of Germany with good transport connections

Cost-effectiveness of homoeopathic treatment in a dental practice

Dentists who accept social security patients in Germany today are bound by a large number of rules and regulations which impose severe limits on their free choice of treatment, cost-effectiveness being a prime consideration. The treatment of acute conditions predominates in a modern compulsory insurance practice. The author analysed his own case record and the statistics provided by the KZV (association of dental practitioners for patients with compulsory insurance) for the period from 1983 to 1990 to establish the effect of introducing consistent use of homoeopathic treatment from the end fo 1984 on the frequency with which certain standard treatments were required. The results were compared with the average figures of other dentists and a computation made of potential economic advantages at a national level

Ferrum phosphoricum

Ferrum phosphoricum is a remedy poorly known in homoeopathy. Except for the indication 'ffever with no or little other symptoms' it is rarely prescribed (or only used as Schussler salt). The results of this proving offer new moalities as well as a mental picture and may open new application for this interesting remedy. The method of proving itself is unconventional and deserves to be evaluated

International perspectives in education

The Executive Dean of the Faculty of Homoepathy describes recent developments in the Faculty's international relationships. There are plans to establish the MFHom examination in India. The Special Committee for Education of the LMHI has organized discussions aimed at harmonizing standards of education for homoeopathic doctors throughout Europe. The present situation of homoeopahty in a number of European countries is summarized and the future plans and role of the Faculty of Homoeopathy are presented
