RESUMO

Objective: To explore the effect of acupuncture at Fuguan point combined with tamoxifen citrate tablet on sperm motility parameters. Methods: A total of 115 individuals with asthenospermia were categorized based on different treatment regimens: 53 patients in the control group (receiving tamoxifen citrate tablets) and 62 patients in the observation group (undergoing acupoint acupuncture in conjunction with tamoxifen citrate tablets). Both groups underwent a 3-month treatment period. The computer-assisted sperm analysis system was employed to measure various motility parameters of human sperm, including sperm motility rate, average path velocity (VAP), lateral swing amplitude (ALH), percentage of class a sperm, and percentage of class a + b sperm. Results: Prior to treatment, no statistically significant differences were observed between the two groups in terms of sperm motility rate, VAP, ALH, percentage of class a sperm, and percentage of class a + b sperm (p > 0.05). Following treatment, both groups exhibited significant enhancements in sperm motility rate, VAP, ALH, percentage of class a sperm, and percentage of class a + b sperm compared to pretreatment levels (p < 0.05). Furthermore, all measured indicators in the observation group demonstrated significantly superior improvements than those of the control group, with the differences proving statistically significant (p < 0.05). Conclusions: The combination of acupuncture at Fusiguan point and tamoxifen citrate tablets exerts a notably positive effect on sperm motility in individuals diagnosed with asthenospermia. (AU)

Objective: To perform a literature review aimed to analyze if acupoint stimulation increases lactation quantity. Method: Studies were collected from five electronic databases following the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses guidelines for systematic reviews. Eligibility criteria were full-text articles in English or Spanish with clinical trial design and observational studies, with no restriction on time of publication, in which the effect of acupoint stimulation on improving the quantity of lactation by conventional acupuncture, electroacupuncture, laser, fire needling, manual stimulation, tuina or catgut had been evaluated. Two authors independently extracted data for the characteristics and main outcomes of the studies selected for inclusion. The risk of bias (RoB 2 and Robins-I) and the quality assessments (GRADE) were performed. For the quantitative synthesis, the standardized mean difference was calculated for each individual study selected and then the data were combined using a random-effects meta-analysis. Results: A total of 14 studies were included in the present review. Most of the included studies exhibited some concerns in the risk of bias assessment. The quality of the studies was moderate. The meta-analysis showed that manual acupoint stimulation improves the lactation quantity (SMD 95% CI=1.63 [1.13-2.13]; p<0.0001). Conclusion: The literature suggests that manual stimulation of acupuncture points improves the amount of milk produced during lactation.(AU)

RESUMO

Abstract Purpose: To verify the efficacy and safety of acupuncture in treating stress urinary incontinence (SUI) in women in a single treatment cycle lasting at least 6 weeks. Methods: A preferred reporting items for systematic reviews and meta-analyses (PRISMA) summary was followed correctly. Through the use of EMBASE, Cochrane Library databases, and PubMed (until July 2021), we looked for randomized controlled trials. In addition, the included articles’ original references were looked up as well. Results: Totally, we analyzed four studies including 690 patients. Compared with the sham acupuncture group, this analysis verified that acupuncture was critically better result in decreasing mean urine leakage (p = 0.04), 1-hour pad test (p = 0.04), 72-hour incontinence episodes (p < 0.00001), International Consultation on Incontinence Questionnaire-Short Form scores (p = 0.0005) and improving patient self-evaluation (All p < 0.05). However, two groups had no statistical significance in improving pelvic floor muscle strength. In the matter of safety, mainly adverse events, especially with respect to pain, both groups showed no statistical difference. Conclusions: Acupuncture is more beneficial to patients with stress urinary incontinence in women with no critical difference in the incidence of advent events than sham acupuncture (AU)

RESUMO

Rheumatoid arthritis is a globally common autoimmune inflammatory disease found especially in China. Acupuncture (AP), a traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) treatment method, is com-monly used for treating rheumatoid arthritis. Many studies have demonstrated that acupuncture alone or in combination with other treatments is beneficial to treat clinical situation of rheumatoid arthritis, thus improving function and quality of life. In this study, we found that centromere protein F (CENPF) is a key gene in rheumatoid arthritis with acupuncture treatment by using differentially expressed genes (DEGs) and random forest model analysis of GSE57983 and GSE77298. Acupuncture helps to up-regulate the expression of CENPF in tissues in rheumatoid arthritis. Functionally, overexpression of CENPF inhibits monocyte chemo-attractant protein (MCP)-1, tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-alpha, and Interleukin (IL)-6 expressions whereas deficiency of CENPF facilitates MCP-1, TNF-alpha, and IL-6 expressions in a collagen-induced arthritis (CIA) rat model. Furthermore, knocked down CENPF with acupuncture treatment antagonizes the inhibition of MCP-1, TNF-alpha, and IL-6 expressions in a CIA rat model. CENPF could be a crucial biomarker in regulating function of acupuncture in treating rheumatoid arthritis. Objective: The objective of this study is to study the critical role of CENPF in regulation of rheumatoid arthritis with acupuncture treatment. Methods:PCA was used to analyze the different expression genes between AP treatment group and control group. Volcano plot and random forest model were used to analyze the decreased and increased expression genes. RT-PCR and IF were used to measure the expres-sion of CENPF in CIA model rat with or without AP treatment. The expression of MCP-1, TNF-alpha and IL-6 was measured by western blotting… (AU)

INTRODUCTION: Shoulder pain, specifically subacromial impingement syndrome, is a problem that affects many people, being the second most common after low back pain. Beneficial results have been obtained on the musculature effects by using deep dry needling in the treatment. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate changes in pain intensity using a visual analogue scale (VAS), pressure pain threshold (algometry), range of motion (goniometry), and functionality (DASH), obtained with the treatment of deep dry needling, combined with local pressure release and stretching with cold spray on the myofascial trigger points of the musculature involved in the shoulder area. Case description: 35-year-old male patient, with pain in the anterior and lateral side of the right shoulder that radiated to the upper right limb reaching the hand and fingers, of 3 months of onset. Intervention: Four physiotherapy sessions were performed, each one lasting 60min, and spaced 8 days apart. Pain variables, pressure pain threshold, range of motion, myofascial trigger points, and shoulder functionality were evaluated. Nine muscles of the shoulder region were explored to diagnose existing trigger points and to treat them using deep dry needling techniques, local pressure release, and local stretching with cold spray. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION: The results showed a decrease in pain intensity and an increase in range of motion, algometry values, and functionality. Therefore, deep dry needling treatment of myofascial trigger point is considered effective. However, the results cannot be generalised due to the small sample size of the study. Further studies are needed on this disorder, as well as the type of treatment to obtain better results, and to incorporate other techniques besides deep dry needling, such us therapeutic exercise or electrostimulation

Rheumatic diseases involving the spine, mainly cervical and lumbar spine, are highly prevalent, and consume considerable health resources. Acupuncture is a medical procedure endorsed by the WHO, with a wide spectrum of medical applications. The aim of this study was to review the evidence on acupuncture efficacy in these diseases. A literature search was performed in MEDLINE, CENTRAL and EMBASE (May 2017): 535 citations. We included four global reviews(45 systematic reviews) and three Systematic Reviews(70 clinical trials). Acupuncture improved cervical pain and functionality both immediately and in the short term. It also proved effective in the treatment of acute and chronic low back pain as the first therapeutic line, compared with placebo, and as an adjunct to other conventional treatments. Acupuncture is a safe intervention. However, acupuncture efficacy in radiculopathies (cervical, lumbar), lumbar spinal stenosis and ankylosing spondylitis is still inconclusive. Well-designed studies with medium and long-term evaluation are required

Objective: To determine the effectiveness of acupuncture in the treatment of hypogalactia and breast inflammation; to map the application points and the techniques used. Methodology: A literature review was conducted by searching on PubMed, Cinahl, Cuiden, Scielo, Lilacs, Dialnet, Latindex, Cuidatge, WorldCat and Google Scholar. Results: A total of ten studies were included. A higher milk production or an extension in the time of lactation was observed in seven studies. The efficacy of acupuncture in the breast inflammation was evaluated in two studies and a quick relief of the symptoms and a lower use of antibiotics were observed. No agreement was found neither for the technique used nor for the acupuncture points used between the treatments. Conclusion: Acupuncture seems to be effective in increasing milk production and improving breast symptoms. The lack of consensus in the selection of points and in the techniques used for the different treatments with acupuncture means that more studies are required in order to generalize these treatments in clinical practice

Objective: To carry out an evaluation of the published scientific evidence and to explore the most appropriate strategies and interventions in the non-cephalic presentation with acupuncture or moxibustion. Method: Bibliographic search was carried out between 2003 and 2018 with the keywords «acupuncture», «moxibustion», «breech presentation», «non-cephalic presentation», in the databases PubMed, Cinahl, WoS, Medline and CENTRAL. Results: Finally, 15 articles were selected that met the inclusion criteria. Moxibustion is effective to achieve the cephalic version in pregnant women with a fetus in non-cephalic presentation in the third trimester of pregnancy. The Asian countries have the most successful results (96.7%) in relation to those in the West (between 53.6 and 75.4%). Discussion: The review of the literature offers us good scientific evidence regarding the effectiveness of moxibustion in V67, in the fetus version of a cephalic presentation. In the vast majority of studies, an improvement in the version of the fetus was observed in the groups that applied the moxibustion technique in V67 in relation to the control group, which had not applied the technique. Conclusion: At present, the use of moxibustion for the cephalic version of a non-cephalic presentation is a procedure of interest for health workers and pregnant women, since it is an effective, safe and easy to apply technique whenever it is indicated

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: To assess whether the techniques of percutaneous needle electrolysis (PNE) and deep dry needling (DDN) used on trigger points (TrP) of lateral pterygoid muscle (LPM) can significantly reduce pain and improve function in patients with myofascial pain syndrome (MPS) compared to a control group treated with a sham needling procedure (SNP). MATERIAL AND METHODS: Sixty patients diagnosed with MPS in the LPM were selected and randomly assigned to one of three groups. The PNE group received electrolysis to the LPM via transcutaneous puncture. The DDN group received a deep puncture to the TrP without the introduction of any substance. In the SNP group, pressure was applied to the skin without penetration. Procedures were performed once per week for 3 consecutive weeks. Clinical evaluation was performed before treatment, and on days 28, 42 and 70 after treatment. RESULTS: Statistically significant differences (p < 0.01) were measured for the PNE and DDN groups with respect to pain reduction at rest, during chewing, and for maximum interincisal opening (MIO). Values for the PNE group showed significantly earlier improvement. Differences for PNE and DDN groups with respect to SNP group were significant (p < 0.05) up to day 70. Evaluation of efficacy as reported by the patient and observer was better for PNE and DDN groups. No adverse events were observed for either of the techniques. CONCLUSIONS: PNE and DDN of the LPM showed greater pain reduction efficacy and improved MIO compared to SNP. Improvement was noted earlier in the PNE group than in the DDN group

Purposes: The increase in quality and life expectancy, often leads to many patients asking the glaucoma specialist whether some sports, activities or hobbies would affect their illness. The aim of this article is to establish guidelines for patients, based on the scientific evidence of published papers. Methods: Review of all published articles on glaucoma and sports or other activities. The papers were classified according to the level of scientific evidence based on the Oxford Centre for Evidence-Based Medicine classification. Results: Aerobic sports are beneficial for the patient. Yoga indoor sports or relaxation techniques should be avoided if Valsalva manoeuvres are performed or the head is placed very low. Also, the patients must avoid sudden changes in height. Intense heat does not seem to lead to progression of glaucoma, but intense cold can affect patients with vascular dysregulation. Activities using the near vision slightly reduce the intraocular pressure. The use of wind instruments may raise intraocular pressure, depending on the technique used. Conclusions: Certain sports and activities may have an influence on the onset or progression of glaucoma. Glaucoma specialists should have adequate information about the scientific evidence in the publications, in order to properly advise the patients (AU)

Acupuncture is a medical procedure with a very wide range of indications according to the WHO. However the indications require robust scientific evidence to support them. We have conducted a systematic review (2010-2015) in order to define in which pathologies acupuncture can be an effective strategy, STRICTA criteria that aim to set up acupuncture clinical trials standard criteria were defined in 2010. Only systematic reviews and meta-analyses of good or very good methodological quality according to SIGN criteria were selected. Its main objective was to evaluate the effectiveness of acupuncture in the management of any disease. Most of the final 31 selected reviews focus on chronic pain-related diseases, mainly in the disciplines of Neurology, Orthopaedics and Rheumatology. Current evidence supports the use of acupuncture in the treatment of headaches, migraines, back pain, cervical pain and osteoarthritis. The remaining pathologies still require further good quality studies (AU)
