RESUMO

Objective: Reduced inhibitory control is a general characteristic of smokers and becomes increasingly pronounced in smoking-related contexts. However, research has rarely considered differences in the effects of various smoking-related cues. To fill this research gap, this study compared the effects of smoking object-related and smoking social-related cues on inhibitory control in smokers. Methods: We used a visual Go/NoGo paradigm with three types of long-lasting backgrounds (neutral, smoking object, and smoking social background) to record the error rates, reaction times, and amplitudes of the N2 and P3 event-related potentials (ERPs) by 25 smokers and 25 non-smokers. Results: (1) Smokers displayed smaller NoGo-N2 amplitudes than controls under the neutral background; (2) smokers displayed smaller NoGo-N2 amplitudes under the smoking social background and smoking object background than they did under the neutral background; (3) relative to neutral and smoking object backgrounds, smokers displayed higher commission error rates, shorter reaction times, and larger NoGo-P3 amplitudes under smoking social background. Conclusion: Smoking-related stimuli impair inhibitory control in smokers, especially when these stimuli are socially related. (AU)

(AU)

One of the consequences of the COVID-19 health crisis was the general lockdown. Research shows that lockdown situations may cause changes in addictive behaviors. The objective of the present study was to analyze the impact of lockdown on the addiction pattern of university students in order to design interventions adjusted to the students’ needs. The study was conducted through a non-probabilistic sample of 540 students, with a mean age of 22.3 years and a proportion of women of 69.3%. The results indicated a significant decrease in the consumption of tobacco, alcohol, and psychotropic drugs during the participants’ lockdown, both in the number of users and in the amounts consumed. Regarding behaviors related to behavioral addictions, participants showed a significant increase in problematic Internet use and use of video games and eSports, although the level of gambling decreased. Despite the fact that consumption patterns were reduced due to changes in the leisure and free time patterns of this population subgroup, it was possible to identify some indicators that deserve attention due to their increase, such as relapses in smoking, an increase in the number of participants who drank alcohol on a daily basis and an increase in the level of discomfort related to the use of technology. The implications of the results are analyzed and possible actions demanded by the students are examined. (AU)

(AU)

Impulsive behavior problems are powerful predictors of addiction treatment outcomes. However, a comprehensive assessment of these features has not been examined in relation to smoking cessation outcomes. This study aims to evaluate the capacity of impulsive behavior to predict the risk of relapse and the number of relapses for smokers. The sample comprised 141 participants (Mage= 47.3, SD= 8.31; 59% females) in psychopharmacology treatment for dependence to nicotine. Participants provided breath carbon monoxide samples for determining smoking throughout the study. The different impulsiveness dimensions were evaluated with a Go/NoGo task, the visual search and attention test and a delayed discount task, while self-informed impulsivity was assessed with Barratt’s Impulsiveness Scale. Unplanned impulsivity, attention failures and performance in the Go/NoGo task are postulated among the individual factors related to the number of relapses. Our results contribute to the understanding of relapse components and enable the inference of assiduity by quantifying relapse. (AU)

(AU)

Objective: To test whether electronic cigarettes use among secondary school students in Spain is associated with initiating nicotine use. Method: Secondary analysis of the ESTUDES 2019 survey, a cross-sectional study conducted on a representative sample of students aged 14–18 years and selected students who had never smoked (n = 16,705). We computed the prevalence and estimated the factors associated with current electronic cigarettes use (at least once in the month before the interview), with and without nicotine. Results: The prevalence of current electronic cigarettes use among students who have never smoked is 2.5% (95% confidence interval [95%CI]: 2.2–2.9). 0.1% (95%CI: 0.08–0.2) declared using liquids with nicotine at least sometimes and 2.4% (95%CI: 2.1–2.8) using liquids always without nicotine. Being male and under 17 years of age, reporting binge drinking behavior, and having regular friends who use cannabis, increases the probability of current use of electronic cigarettes. The latter two variables seem to act as contextual variables associated with electronic cigarettes use. Conclusions: The percentage of Spanish never smoker students who currently use electronic cigarettes is lower than in neighboring countries, except for the United Kingdom. Only one in every 1000 Spanish students between 14 and 18 years old who have never smoked initiates the current use of nicotine with an electronic cigarette. However, we must monitor the evolution of this indicator. (AU)

RESUMO

Smoking is the leading cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide and is clearly involved as a cardiovascular risk factor. Smoking has different effects on the cardiovascular system, such as a decrease in nitric oxide, increased inflammatory response, increased adhesion of pro-atherogenic molecules, lipid disturbances, generation of oxidative stress and endothelial dysfunction as can be shown in different biomarkers modifications. Despite the aids currently available for smoking cessation, many smokers are unwilling or unable to achieve this. So alternative tools with potential harm reduction, such as non-combustion tobacco products, could be an option due to the better results they had shown on cardiovascular risk factors. This has led these devices to be taken into account as a risk-modifying tobacco product according to the FDA. (AU)

Objectives: To estimate the prevalence of smoking consumption and forms of its initiation among adolescents in the city of Ibiza, in order to implement intervention strategies that allow for adolescents to increase their knowledge on smoking and the new smoking consumption forms. Subjects and methods: Cross-sectional study in students of 12 to 18 years. Access to an anonymous digital questionnaire was sent to two institutes of the island. The final sample included 344 students. In addition to the consumption of tobacco and of cannabis, other sociodemographic and familial variables were analyzed. Results: A total of 344 adolescents, aged 12 to 18 years, 50.2 % of whom were women, participated. The mean age of initiation of smoking was 13 years, which coincides with the recent studies conducted on a national level. The electronic cigarette is the product that is used most among those surveyed, which seems to be due to the easy access it has and its social acceptance. The use of cannabis has a similar percentage to that of the cigarette, which indicates that its use is normalized among adolescents and that it is not difficult to access it. Within the reasons for the initiation of its use, 48.2 % did so because people smoked in their setting. A total of 37.5 % answered that they began to smoke for fun, which implies the social context (group of friends), reinforcing the idea that mainly there is a social component involved in the beginning of smoking habit. Conclusions: The need for intervention in the educational setting with prevention programs and activities is clearly demonstrated, beginning among children in primary education. Information should be included in these programs on the new ways that the nicotine consumption is entering with force among the young persons.(AU)

RESUMO

Background Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is related to inflammation and obstruction of the lungs and airways. Protein arginine methyltransferase 5 (PRMT5) that promotes arginine methylation of histones is associated with inflammation of endothelial cell and is implicated in lung branching morphogenesis and progression of lung cancer. The mechanism of PRMT5 in inflammatory response of COPD was explored in this study. Methods Human bronchial epithelial cells, 16HBE, were treated with cigarette smoke extract for 24 h to establish cell model of COPD. Cell viability was examined by MTT assay. Western blot and reverse transcription-quantitative polymerase chain reaction (RT-qPCR) assays were used to explore expression of PRMT5. Expression of Interleukin (IL)-6, IL-8, tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α), and IL-1β were investigated by enzyme-linked-ithe mmunosorbent serologic assay. Results Cigarette smoke extract treatment induced cytotoxity of 16HBE with reduced cell viability. PRMT5 was enhanced in cigarette smoke extract-induced 16HBE. Knockdown of PRMT5 increased cell viability of cigarette smoke extract-induced 16HBE, and attenuated cigarette smoke extract-induced increase of IL-6, IL-8, TNF-α, and IL-1β. Up-regulation of C-X-C Motif Chemokine 10 (CXCL10) in cigarette smoke extract-induced 16HBE was restored by knockdown of PRMT5. Over-expression of CXCL10 counteracted with the suppressive effect of PRMT5 silence on expression of IL-6, IL-8, TNF-α, and IL-1β. Moreover, PRMT5 silence-induced increase of cell viability in cigarette smoke extract-induced 16HBE was reversed by over-expression of CXCL10. Conclusion Knockdown of PRMT5 promoted cell viability of cigarette smoke extract-induced 16HBE, and reduced inflammation through down-regulation of CXCL10 (AU)

Objective: Evaluate the beliefs of the smokers andex-smokers on the concern about catching COVID-19,desires to stop smoking and perception of success ofthe effective treatments in the pandemic. Patients and methods: A voluntary and self-administered questionnaire was applied to those over 18years of age on the behaviors during the COVID-19quarantine, by means of dissemination through thesocial networks during April and May of 2020. Of the1,948 surveys, 1,071 were analyzed among ex-smokers(n= 565) and current smokers (n= 506). The followingvariables were considered: comorbidities, concern aboutbeing a smoker during the times of COVID-19, type of cigarette used, desire to quit smoking, treatments chosen to quit smoking and the decision to sop smoking. Results: The degree of concern is associated with thedesire to quit smoking (p <0.001). The statement that“I am quite concerned” correlates with the desire toquit smoking (p <0.001), and that of “I am not concerned” with that of no desire (p <0.001). The optionto quit smoking that showed the greatest generalizedagreement among the smokers who desired to quitsmoking and concerned about their condition of being a smoker in the pandemic is the belief that “Thedecision to want to quit smoking is fundamental” is“Very effective,” with 79 % of those surveyed choosingthis option. Conclusion: Concern about catching COVID-19increases the desire to quit smoking. Most of thesmokers and ex-smokers believe that their decisionto stop smoking is sufficient and that treatment isnot necessary.(AU)
