RESUMO

Background: There are serious doubts as to whether parental strictness, one of the two main dimensions of parental style, can be a negative or positive component of parenting in traditional societies. Method: Parenting style (authoritarian, authoritative, indulgent, and neglectful) was captured from strictness and warmth dimensions and child maladjustment was assessed with problems of self-esteem and self-concept (academic, social, emotional, family, and physical) studied worldwide. The sample was composed of 1,282 Chinese participants (676 females, 52.7%), 581 adolescent children (age ranging from 12-18 years, 45.3%), and 701 young adult children (age ranging from 19-31 years, 54.7%). A 4 × 2 × 2 factorial MANOVA was applied for all outcomes using parenting style, sex, and age as the independent variables. Results: The statistical analysis plainly indicated that authoritarian (strictness but not warmth) and neglectful (neither strictness nor warmth) parenting styles were associated with higher maladjustment in terms of lower self-esteem and self-concept scores. Indulgent (not strictness but warmth) and authoritative (strictness and warmth) parenting were positive parenting styles acting as protective factors against self-esteem and self-concept problems. The authoritative style (strictness and warmth), but not the authoritarian parenting style (strictness but not warmth), was the most positive parenting for academic self-concept, but only among adolescents. Conclusions: Interestingly, completely contrary to expectations that authoritarian parenting might be a positive parenting in traditional societies, present findings suggest that the authoritarian style might be a negative parenting related to child maladjustment.

Current emergent studies are seriously questioning if parental strictness contributes to adolescent adjustment. This study examined whether the relationship between authoritative (warmth and strictness), authoritarian (strictness without warmth), indulgent (warmth without strictness), and neglectful (neither warmth nor strictness) parenting styles shows equal or different pattern of adjustment and maladjustment for aggressive and non-aggressive adolescents. The sample consisted of 969 Spanish adolescents, 554 females (57.2%) and 415 males, ranging from 12 to 17 years old. Families were classified into one of four typologies by their scores on warmth and strictness, and the adolescents were grouped by their aggressiveness (low vs. high). Adolescent adjustment was captured with three self-esteem indicators (emotional, physical, and family) and personal maladjustment with five indicators (negative self-esteem, negative self-adequacy, emotional irresponsiveness, emotional instability, and negative worldview). It was tested main and interaction effects between parenting and aggressiveness considering also sex and age factors. Findings showed that aggressive adolescents always had the worst socialization outcomes (i.e., the lowest self-esteem and the highest personal maladjustment). Aggressive and non-aggressive adolescents have a common pattern: both, indulgent and authoritative parenting styles were always associated with better outcomes than either authoritarian or neglectful parenting, but indulgent parenting style was associated with the best outcomes across all the criteria. In contrast with previous evidence about the idea that parental strictness and imposition might be beneficial to raise aggressive adolescents, present findings highlight the positive impact of parental warmth even with aggressive adolescents. Implications for family interventions were considered

The styles of parental socialization (ESP) have been the subject of different studies in the social sciences and especially in psychology due to the consequences that styles can present in the life of a person. The literature has evidence that styles may vary depending on contextual variables such as culture, beliefs, education, family types or socioeconomic levels (NSE). The main objective of the study was to describe the ESP as an approximation to the form of parenting used by parents, mothers or caregivers (PMC) in Chile. A non-experimental-descriptive study was conducted with a sample of 875 adolescents aged between 11 and 18 years (M = 14.12, SD= 1.82), 51% males, of four NSE (low, medium low, medium and medium high) from seven cities in Chile. A sociodemographic survey was used to characterize the sample, and the Styles of Parental Socialization in Adolescence Questionnaire (ESPA29). The results show differences in the configuration of ESP between PMC. In mothers, the configuration of ESP (in descending order) was: democratic, indulgent, negligent and authoritarian and in parents: indulgent, negligent, democratic and authoritarian, there are differences according to NSE. In the low are perceived by their children as mostly forgiving, while in the upper middle, both parents are considered mostly democratic. There are also differences in the ESP configuration according to sex. These results would allow to focus interventions in educational communities on the importance of parenting and differences or characteristics between styles. It can also be useful as a basis for other research on parental consequences in variables such as academic performance, behavioral, emotional and personality problems

RESUMO

Archival, correlational, and experimental studies converge showing strong links between societal threat and authoritarianism. However, inconsistent with the social cognitive studies showing that our perception of the reality is systematically biased, the literature on the threat-authoritarianism relations has largely ignored the connection between the actual societal threat and its perception. In this study, we analyzed the relation between objective societal threat and authoritarians' perception of it, hypothesizing that authoritarians would tend to overestimate societal threat and that such overestimation would increase the endorsement of authoritarian attitudes and the preference for authoritarian political systems. Using an experimental approach, we studied the relations between right-wing authoritarianism (RWA), actual societal threat (manipulated as low vs. moderate), and perceived societal threat working with an Italian community sample (N = 209, Mage = 29.70, SD = 9.53, 64.1% women). Actual threat and RWA equally predicted participants' threat perception, while their interaction did not. In turn, threat perception further increased RWA and support to authoritarian political system. We discussed the results in terms of a vicious circle whereby authoritarians overestimate societal threat and such overestimation reinforces authoritarian attitudes

Background: The penalty of revisable permanent prison (PPPR) is a custodial sentence approved in 2015 by the Spanish Government. Athoritarianism represents a style of personality characterized by exercising a form of oppressive power lacking in will and freedom. In the present study, both constructs are related in order to determine if there is a correlation between a favorable attitude to this punishment and authoritarian personality. Method: Three scales (The F Scale, RWA and adapted Attitude Scale) are applied to 156 subjects chosen through incidental probabilistic selection, with ages ranging from 18 to 83 years old (M=31.256, DT=12.77), including their education level and political orientation. Results and conclusions: It is observed that, to a greater authoritarian aggression, there will a favorable attitude towards this punishment. The results show higher scores in authoritarianism in extreme political ideology positions, also in the older age groups; in relation to the attitude towards the PPPR, a favorable position is observed in the older group. The implications at a psychosocial level of these findings are discussed

The objectives of this research were to check the differences in the level of sport competition depending on parental education styles, and to know what the differences are in parental education styles in terms of sport success. In order to measure the different variables an ad hoc sociodemographic questionnaire, the Multifactor Self-Assessment Test of Child Adjustment (TAMAI) and the Oviedo Scale of Infrequency of Response (INF-OV) were carried out. The sample consisted of 502 Spanish athletes. The results showed that athletes without international success obtained higher scores and significant differences in mother's restriction. Moreover, the mother’s care education close to protectionism showed significant differences in benefit of athletes who do not compete internationally. It was concluded that protective mothers are not related to having children who compete internationally and restrictive mothers are not related to having children who achieve international success

RESUMO

Objective: To explore families' experiences who use an authoritarian parenting style in caring for school-age children. Method: This was a qualitative study employing a phenomenological approach. The sampling method was to interview parents of school-age children living in the Central Maluku district in Indonesia. Results: The findings of this study generated the following themes: (1) parents strictly controlled their children to achieve the parental values and expectations, (2) children failed to meet the parental values and expectations, and (3) problems experienced by the children were the results of the parenting style. Conclusions: This study suggested nursing professionals provide adequate information for parents with respect to parenting styles that may facilitate the optimal growth and development of the children. Future studies pertinent to cultural factors associated with authoritarian parenting were also suggested to better understand the cultural context of this parenting style

It is assumed that the professional profile of those who work with socially excluded people is not compatible with the maintenance of prejudices against the group they help. The current study tested this hypothesis regarding the Dual Process Cognitive-Motivational Model of Duckitt (2001) and Duckitt and Sibley (2010). Data from 565 Andalusian professionals were collected in a cross-sectional survey, using measures of socio-demographics, personality, values, ideological attitudes, political position, and prejudice. The model fitted to data reproduced the basic relations in the hypothesized model, although its explanatory power was limited. Prejudice was significantly explained by both paths (authoritarianism and dominance), leading to the conclusion that the reduced level of prejudice held by professionals corresponds to the perception of socially excluded people as a dissident group. This suggests that professional identity as a broad construct may moderate the variance in prejudice. Finally, these findings also suggest that the professional development of social workers should be promoted

Objective: Design and validate a short measurement scale of authoritarianism for teenagers. Methods: The items and dimensions were formulated to adapt the concepts related to authoritarian attitude (set of beliefs and feelings that induce to discriminate and exercise violence on those subjects that are perceived as different) to the specific context of adolescence. Initially, 14 items corresponding to the most habitual attitudes of authoritarian type in the teen period (gender tolerance, ethnic diversity tolerance and scholar violence attitudes) were identified. The questionnaire was provided to a sample of 1960 pupils belonging to Secondary Education Schools. Results: In the factorial analyses, 3 out of the 14 initial items were eliminated. The three dimensional model proposed here showed good adjustment (GFI= 0.96) and achieved high consistency (alpha of Cronbach= 0.83) confirming its construct validity (AU)

The aim of the present paper is to extend previous research that examines the relationship between religion and prejudice. This study was conducted with samples inside and outside the university context: 211 and 155 participants respectively. Various instruments are used to measure the religious orientation, religious prejudice, rightwing authoritarianism, fundamentalism, frequency of prayer, literalism, beliefs, emotions, favorability and modern racism. A Religious Prejudice Scale has been created with four factors (homophobia, sexism, religious intolerance and social distance) and is shown as a useful tool to understand the complex relationship between religion and prejudice. The results show that the variables right-wing authoritarianism and fundamentalism are the best predictors of prejudice and also that the non university sample (religious groups and churches) manifests a greater religious prejudice (AU)

An example of such types of models they are the based ones on the Law of the Thurstone’s comparative Judgment. The results of this study do not recommend to interpret the parameter of disciminal desviation of the Law of the Comparative Judgment, as an index of the degree of confusion that provoke the stimuli in the judges and in turn will be the possibility that really they are the scale values obtained with the above mentioned model, which should be interpreted as an index of the degree confusion that they provoke in the subjects (AU)

Prejudice as a negative affective attitude towards a particular group or towards an individual as a members of the group has a long research tradition in Social Psychology (Adorno, 1950; Allport, 1954). Most of this research, however, has concentrated on racial prejudice rather than prejudice towards other target groups, such as homosexuals. However, any approach to the study of homophobia today must take into account new understanding of prejudice. The aim of this article is to see if the distinction between subtle prejudice and explicit prejudice can be applied to prejudice toward homosexuals. A sample of 232 people answered a questionnaire that included: a scale of explicit and subtle homophobia, a scale of perceived discrepancy of values, a scale of authoritarianism and a scale of self-discrepancy. The results confirm that there are differences between explicit and subtle homophobia, along the same lines as in racial prejudice (AU)
