RESUMO

The aim of this study is to report a case of polysplenia syndrome observed in an 1 1/2 yr. old male patient who came for CT thorax for preoperative evaluation of congenital heart disease. There was partial anomalous pulmonary venous drainage – right lung was draining into right atrium and left lung into left atrium. The IVC was interrupted and venous return was via the continuation of enlarged azygos vein, which was running adjacent to the aorta and to its right side. The bronchial and vascular anatomy of the right lung was identical to that of the left lung, i.e, bilateral bilobed lungs with bilateral hyparterial bronchi - a variant condition called left thoracic isomerism. In the abdomen splenule was present. The pathogenesis is not completely clear, but it is thought to be caused by an abnormality of embryonic curvature with a possible genetic basis (AU)

The prenatal diagnosis of interruption of the inferior vena cava with azygos vein continuation is uncommon. Its finding will require us to rule out the presence of a cardiosplenic syndrome or isomerism, particularly left isomerism or polysplenia, as interruption of the inferior vena cava is an excellent marker of this disease, being found in 55-85% of cases. However, it can also correspond to an isolated vascular malformation, with no or little effect on the prognosis, essential in the newborn. Although there could be complications later on during their adult life (AU)

A high-performance liquid chromatographic separation and quantitative method using a RP-18 columneluted isocratically with methanol and water (73:27, v/v) was developed to analyze the isomeric activecompounds, indigotin and indirubin, present in the chloroform extract of indigo naturalis. Standardizedsolutions of indigotin and indirubin were used to evaluate linearity, precision (repeatability), accuracyand specificity of the method were evaluated. The results exhibited a linearity (r2 > 0.999) of between1.8 - 16.2 ìg/ml and 1.6 - 14.4 mg/ml for indigotin and indirubin, respectively. A high degree ofspecificity and robustness, as well as repeatability (relative standard deviation less than 5% for bothstandards and the extracts) and accuracy (% recoveries greater than 95%) were also achieved
