This systematic review aimed to assess the efficacy of motor adaptation during walking on a split-belt treadmill (SBT) under different learning conditions in adults with stroke. We searched randomized clinical trials and case studies that used SBT under different learning conditions published between January 2011 and April 2022 in four databases: Pubmed, Scopus, Web of Science, and Brain-URJC. The following data were extracted: objectives, interventions, population, number of sessions, outcome measures, and results. The methodological quality of quantitative studies was evaluated using the Critical Review Form. We identified 79 studies, from which six met the criteria for this systematic review (four randomized clinical trials and two case series). The six selected studies included 156 patients with chronic stroke; 62.8% men, age 21-85 years. Walking on a SBT can generate artifacts in the gait pattern depending on the experimental conditions. Two series of cases and one trial reported that the dual motor task - the inclination of the slope of the SBT or the gradual change of speed - promotes the retention of the artifacts generated by the disturbances, resulting in the learning of a new motor pattern. However, combining physical exercise of different intensity and at different times with SBT, maximizing or minimizing errors, or including variable or constant speed disturbances do not seem to affect the locomotor adaptation process.(AU)

(AU)

Background: The recovery of hand function is one of the most complex aspects for patients who have suffered the sequelae of neurological damage. Objective: To evaluate the short-term effects on the affected upper limb of the autonomous performance of a reflex locomotion exercise adapted to sitting in chronic neurological patients. Method: Pretest–postest design. Thirteen patients (8 women) participated with a mean age of 47.61 (SD 16.03). Possibility of clamping and minimum shoulder abduction of 30°. Three sessions were held in 2consecutive weeks, training the patient to perform the exercise at home without assistance. The effect of the therapy is assessed before and after the first session, at 2weeks and 3months later. Grip was measured with the Sollerman test, and the speed and global function of the affected arm with the Box–Block test. Results: In the 1st session in Box–Block it went from 18.6 to 22.6 cubes (P<.002). Results maintained in 2nd and 3rd evaluation. In the Sollerman test, it went from an average of 41.4–46.9 pts. (p<.003) in 1st evaluation, and 47.15 pts. in 2nd (P<0.002). After 3months the effects are maintained (.005). Conclusions: The application of a reflex locomotion program adapted to sitting in patients with sequelae in the upper limb, offers the patient the possibility of self-managing therapy by increasing its intensity. This improves the function and mobility of the upper limb in the short term. (AU)

INTRODUCTION: Spinal cord injury of either congenital or acquired origin produces motor, sensory and autonomic deficiencies. Therefore, the recovery of motor function is one of the most important factors in the rehabilitation process; that is why mobile applications are currently considered tools that facilitate the rehabilitation process. AIM: To determine the effects of the use of mobile applications on motor function in people with spinal cord injury. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A systematic literature search was carried out on the use of mobile applications for people with spinal cord injury of any age and origin of injury in different databases, whose eligibility was achieved through the CONSORT strategy and the evaluation of methodological quality using the PEDro scale. We also searched the main mobile applications markets to identify their utility in recovery of motor function. RESULTS: Two articles that met the inclusion criteria were included; with the participation of 46 people, 18 assigned to the control group and 28 received intervention using mobile applications. The latter showed improvement in motor function after the intervention. The search of the application markets showed 65 apps, of which 27 focused specifically on motor function in patients with spinal cord injury and 40 with potential utility. CONCLUSION: Due to the number of studies and their methodological quality, the effects of the use of mobile applications on motor function in people with spinal cord injury are not conclusive. Even so, there are many unverified mobile apps on the apps markets, specifically designed or potentially useful in relation to the motor function of people with spinal cord injury

RESUMO

The presence of enteropathogens such as Salmonella affects the quality and safety of vegetables that are consumed in a minimally processed state. Worldwide, tomatoes are one of the main vegetables whose raw consumption has caused health alerts. As such, the aim of this study was to determine the motility and survival of Salmonella enterica subspecies enterica serovar Enteritidis on greenhouse-grown tomato plants. A completely randomized experimental design was used, and bacteria were inoculated into the substrate at the time of transplanting as well as by puncturing the plant stem, petiole, and peduncle during the vegetative, flowering, and fruiting stages. Survival was monitored throughout the production cycle; motility was evaluated separately in plant organs separated from the point of inoculation. Salmonella enteritidis survived the 120 days of the experiment both at the point of inoculation and in other organs of the tomato plant. For all treatments, there was a significant difference (P < 0.05) between bacterial counts in the root (12.45 ± 2.52 to 160 ± 4.01 CFU/g), stem (16.10 ± 2.31 to 90.55 ± 3.62 CFU/g), flower (7.0 ± 2.15 to 51.10 ± 3.80 CFU/g), and fruit (8.75 ± 2.38 to 28.2 ± 3.29 CFU/g). The results of the study indicate that Salmonella enteritidis in contact with tomato plants is a latent danger because its ability to enter, survive, and move within tomato plants until reaching the fruit, limits the effectiveness of commonly used disinfection methods, it would potentiate the risk to human health

RESUMO

The relationships between specific type IV pili (TFP) groups and antibiotic resistance, biofilm formation, and bacterial motility were determined in 190 Pseudomonas aeruginosa clinical isolates. While motility and biofilm formation were determined by phenotypic assays, the presence of TFP was determined by PCR assay and antibiotic susceptibility by disk diffusion. The results showed a high ability to form biofilm (97.4%), multidrug resistance (44.7%), and the presence of a high number of motile isolates. We also found an association between strong biofilm production and multidrug resistance. Furthermore, TFP group III was associated with strong biofilm production. In contrast, the isolates with TFP group II and those without any TFP were associated with non-strong biofilm production. Regarding motility, TFP group II was associated with higher percentages of swarming, swimming, and twitching, while TFP group I showed lower percentages of swarming and twitching, and TFP group III showed lower levels of swarming and swimming. In conclusion, these findings highlight the differences in P. aeruginosa phenotypes related to the presence of specific TFP groups and their potential implications in clinical settings

Introduction. Non-traumatic limping is a common reason for consultation in paediatric emergencies. Although transient synovitis of the hip (TS) is the most frequent diagnosis, there are cases of limping secondary to serious pathologies. The aim of this review is to describe the variables related to non-traumatic limp that come to the paediatric emergency department to establish the best management protocol, making the most of resources and speeding up emergency care. Material and method. A prospective study was conducted, selecting all children less than 15 years old who consulted aspaediatric emergencies for non-traumatic limping during the 2014. Clinical variables, complementary examinations and diagnoses were collected in the emergency room consultation and 6 months after the consultation. Results. During 2014, 146 patients (0.69% of the emergencies) were included in the non-traumatic limping study. Four cases of severe limping were diagnosed: 2 leukaemias, 1 septic arthritis and 1 acetabular bone tumour. The most frequent diagnosis was TS (53.16%). At 6 months, 135 children (92.4%) had resolved lameness. The diagnosis was changed in 9 children (6.1%). Children with TS had fewer days of evolution, and 77% were between 3 and 10 years old. Children with a final diagnosis of severe pathology had a limp for longer, fever and did not weight bear on ambulation. Conclusions. In limping of probable hip origin, at the ages of between 3 and 10, without fever or systemic symptoms and of less than one week's onset, it is possible to make a clinical diagnosis of TS limiting the use of complementary examinations (AU)

Introduction: Stereotactic surgery is used to place electrodes or cannulas in the brain in order to study the function of several brain structures in preclinical research. The hippocampus has been extensively studied with this methodology due to its involvement in a wide range of neurological, cognitive, emotional, and affective disorders. However, the effects of stereotactic surgery on coordination and motor activity should be evaluated in order to determine whether this surgical procedure causes any neurological alterations that may bias the results of studies incorporating this technique. Methods: We evaluated the effects of stereotactic surgery and implantation of a cannula into the hippocampus of female Wistar rats on the motor activity, forced swim, and rotarod tests. The stage of the oestrous cycle was included in the statistical analysis. Results: Stereotactic surgery had no impact on any of the motor activity variables assessed in the open field (squares crossed, time spent in grooming, and rearing), forced swim (turning behaviour, lateral swimming, latency to first immobility, and time spent immobile), and rotarod (latency to fall) tests, compared with intact rats. Regardless of surgical manipulation, rats in the metestrus and diestrus stages crossed a greater number of squares and displayed longer immobility times than those in the proestrus and estrus stages. Conclusion: Stereotactic surgery for cannula placement in the dorsal hippocampus does not affect coordination and motor activity in rats. We can therefore conclude that this procedure has no neurological complications that may interfere in the interpretation of results of studies applying this technique (AU)

Introduction: Cortical motor areas are influenced not only by peripheral sensory afferents and prefrontal association areas, but also by the basal ganglia, specifically the striatum. The dorsomedial striatum (DMS) and dorsolateral striatum are involved in both spatial and stimulus-response learning; however, each of these areas may mediate different components of learning. The aim of the study is to determine the effect of electrolytic lesion to the DMS on the learning and performance of sexual behaviour and locomotor activity in male rats. Method: Once the subjects had learned to perform motor tests of balance, maze navigation, ramp ascent, and sexual behaviour, they underwent electrolytic lesion to the DMS. Five days later, the tests were repeated on 2 occasions and researchers compared performance latencies for each test. Results: Average latency values for performance on the maze and balance tests were higher after the lesion. However, the average values for the ramp test and for sexual behaviour did not differ between groups. Conclusions: Electrolytic lesion of the DMS modifies the performance of locomotor activity (maze test and balance), but not of sexual behavior (AU)

The objective of this work is to identify the last four motor actions (punches) made by heavyweight world champion boxers, in an attempt to characterize how ‘Knock out’ is achieved in this sport. An observation tool consisting of four criteria and 35 categories was devised. The two requirements for sampling are: that the subject was the world heavyweight champion sometime between 1921-2007 (Jack Dempsey to Ruslan Chagaev) and that digital images are available for analysis. Data were obtained about the motor actions preceding the end of the fight, studying the last four punches delivered by the winner. The results show that the ‘Knock out’ in boxing is in most cases due to certain types of punches being used by the contenders, with significant differences being recorded (AU)

Introduction: Cerebral ischaemia is one of the most common neurological diseases worldwide. Its many sequelae range from motor and sensory symptoms to cognitive decline and dementia. Animal models of cerebral ischaemia/hypoperfusion elicit effects on long term memory; however, the effects of these procedures on short term memory are not clearly understood and effects induced by alternative hypoperfusion models are completely unknown. Methods: We evaluated the effects of 2 cerebral hyperperfusion models on memory in 3-month-old male rats. Episodic memory and working memory were assessed using the new object recognition test and the spontaneous alteration test, respectively. Neurological assessment was also performed, along with an open field test to evaluate locomotor activity. Results: Rats in both hyperperfusion models displayed no cognitive changes. Rats with unilateral left-sided ligation plus temporary ligation of the right carotid tended to show slightly impaired performance on the new object recognition test on the second day after the procedure. In contrast, the group with permanent unilateral ligation tended to display alterations in working and episodic memory 9 days after the procedure, but they subsequently recovered. Conclusion: Despite these differences, both hypoperfusion groups displayed clear signs of motor impairment 2 days after the procedure, as reflected by their decreased locomotor activity during the open field test

Introduction: Equine therapy, an intervention method that has been practiced for decades around the world, is used to treat patients susceptible to psychomotor delays. Objectives: We examine development of gross motor function compared to other psychomotor skills in patients undergoing this therapy, and analyse how this improvement affects general health status and quality of life. Material and methods: The study includes 11 children with delayed psychomotor development (aged 8.82 ± 3.89; 6 boys, 5 girls). The main study variables were gross motor function (GMFM-88) and perceived quality of life (Pediatric Quality of Life Inventory, PedsQL). Three measurements were performed: before and after a period of inactivity, and once again 2 months after the second measurement, following completion of a sustained period of therapy. Results: We observed significant differences in overall results on the GMFM-88 between the initial and final tests and between the intermediate and final tests. Regarding the PedsQL quality of life scale, no statistically significant results were recorded. Conclusions: Noticeable changes in motor control were recorded throughout the course of the intervention, which suggests that equine therapy may be appropriate treatment in cases of delayed psychomotor development

Introduction: Tele-rehabilitation refers to the providing of physiotherapy services based on the new information and communication technologies. The potential of Vojta therapy is studied in order to be partially used in adults in this setting.Material and method: A randomized, double blind clinical trial was performed with 45 healthy adult subjects (20 men and 25 women; aged: 23 to 41 years; SD: 2.73). Chance selection. Two types of chest area stimulation are studied in the Reflex Rolling pattern: manual compared to a mechanical mechanism that reproduces the same stimulation. Primary endpoint: microvolts of muscle contractions with a surface EMG, over the common fingers extensor. Finally, the subject’s capacity of control of the reflex activation caused with the mechanism is studied. The session are supervised by distance with a webcam. Results: There are significant contradictions in both types of intervention regarding resting levels P=.00. However, significant differences are not found in the main result between manual intervention or that produced by the mechanical mechanism P=.29. It was not possible to demonstrate significant differences, P=.64 in the activation stage with webcam. Conclusions: The mechanical mechanism produces a contraction in the muscle similar to the manual intervention. Furthermore, the remote activation with the mechanism shows that the trained subject is capable of self-management under the supervision of the webcam specialist. Therefore, Vojta therapy in the Reflex Rolling pattern has the potential to be transferred to a tele-rehabilitation platform for adults (AU)

Objectives: Several disorders of early childhood, such as developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH) and clubfoot, requires orthopedic treatment that limits active mobility of the lower extremities for a period of time. The aim of our study was to evaluate the impact on locomotor development of the orthopedic treatment in infants less than one year-old. Patients and methods: The study included a prospective cohort of consecutive patients diagnosed with developmental dysplasia of the hip (Group A, 24 patients), and clubfoot (Group B,32 patients) treated from January 2007 to June 2009. A third group (Group C) of 50 healthy children was used as control. The variables evaluated were: months with a brace, age to sit withoutsupport, age at the start of crawling, and age at the beginning of walking. The results obtainedwere analyzed. Comparisons between the three groups were performed using the Kruskal-Wallis test and Mann-Whitney test. We chose a value of P<0.05 as level of statistical significance. Results: The analysis of independent samples showed that the mean age at which the patients began to sit were similar: 6.12, 6.42 and 6.19 months, respectively (P=0.249). The mean age for crawling was similar, although with a slight trend toward statistical significance: 8.84, 9.38 and 9.17 months, respectively (P=.08). The age at which they started walking was different between the three groups: 12.14, 13.21 and 12.41 months, respectively (P<0.001). Conclusion: Orthopedic treatment of DDH and clubfoot in children less than one year-old slightly slows down the course of normal locomotor development (AU)

AbstractTo analyze the effects of inclusion within a Vojta Therapy protocol in the physiotherapy program of a case with a spinal cord injury. A Patient with 6-month old C3-C6 incomplete spinal cord injury, ASIA Scale C. The ASIA Scale sensory-motor assessment, the Walking Index for Spinal Cord Injury, version 2 (Wisci II) Scale for gait analysis and Barthel Scale for functionality were evaluated, also performing an urodynamic and spirometrics study. The results after the study show progression on the ASIA Scale improvements from the C to D levels. The urodynamic study showed improvement of bladder filling in 119% with compensated micturation. Respiratory function increased by 10% forced vital capacity and 55% forced expiratory flowing (25%-75%). Gait improved from 0 to 17/20 on the Wisci II Scale and functiohnality went from 0 to 35 points on the Barthel Scale. In the case cased, the combination of both therapies has been translated into a significant acceleration of the rehabilitation process in all the variables measured(AU)

RESUMO

Colonies of the fish pathogen Flavobacterium psychrophilum have gliding motility in media with low agar concentrations. Although gliding motility, particularly in Flavobacterium johnsoniae, has been well-studied, little is known about its regulation by environmental factors. The work described here shows that the ability of F. psychrophilum to spread over surfaces depends on nutrient availability. In fact, as the nutrient contents of the medium decreased, spreading was favored and the diameter of the colonies increased. Macroscopy examination revealed modifications in colony morphology as nutrient depletion increased: from a dense and defined colony to the formation of microcolonies inside a general colony structure. Additionally, colony expansion dynamics and population density across the colony radius varied inversely with bacterial biomass production. Motility was an immediate response when bacteria were transferred from a rich to a more diluted medium. Our results suggest that, when nutrients are limiting, F. psychrophilum activates a specific growth mode that enables it to colonize surfaces by means of gliding motility. The use of diluted media allowed the differentiation, among previously isolated F. psychrophilum non-gliding mutants, of those completely unable to glide and those with only partially impaired gliding ability (AU)

Summary. Introduction. Human beings are characterised by the specialisation of certain functions, such as language or the ability to walk. We have achieved this capacity thanks to the development of multiple connections among different areas of the central and peripheral nervous system, together with adaptation of the musculoskeletal system. These are all essential to be able to walk correctly and to keep our balance. Development. Gait disorders are currently receiving a great deal of attention in neurology departments, and this fact is directly related to the phenomenon of the ageing of the population, since it is a pathology that is particularly prevalent among the elderly. One of the fundamental mainstays in the study of these disorders is being able to distinguish between the different clinical gait patterns and their classification according to the neural system that has been damaged. Observation, the use of different manoeuvres in the examination and the search for other associated clinical signs all enable us reach a good diagnostic approximation, which will later be confirmed with more specific complementary techniques. Conclusions. From the therapeutic point of view, an early multidisciplinary intervention y the neurologist, primary care, specialists in rehabilitation and physiotherapists improves patients’ quality of life and lowers the rate of associated comorbidity and mortality, which also results in a reduction in spending on community health resources (AU)

AIM. To evaluate if early mobilization in patients with acute lower limbs deep vein thrombosis (DVT) increases the incidence of symptomatic pulmonary embolism (PE). To evaluate determining factors of PE, like location of the thrombus and /or time of clinical evolution. PATIENTS AND METHODS. Prospective randomised clinical trial. Carried on in two university hospitals, from January 2002 to December 2003. 146 patients with acute lower limbs DVT where included, 68 female and 78 male, with a mean age of 60.7 years. The inclusion criteria were: less that 15 days of initial symptoms, life expectancy greater than one year, no life threatening clinical condition, inform written consent. These patients were randomized into two groups. Group A: 67 patients (45.9%) hospital treatment with a 5 days bed rest. Group B: 79 patients (54.1%) home care with early walking and compressive bandage. Primary end point was the presence of symptomatic PE during the first ten days of treatment. The relationships between time of clinical evolution, location of thrombus and symptomatic PE were also analyzed. The statistical analysis was made using the chi-square o Fisher exact test, homogeneity basal and multivariate analysis. RESULTS. Four cases of symptomatic PE were detected (2.7%), two in each group. There was no significant difference concerning the occurrence of new PE between the two groups (p = 0.33). Also no difference was detected according to time of evolution (p = 0.45) and location of thrombus (p = 0.37). Multivariate analysis did not show any significant difference between groups. CONCLUSION. Seemingly location of thrombus and elapse time of symptoms did not increase the incidence of symptomatic PE
