RESUMO

This study investigated the role of fatalism as a cultural value orientation and causal attributions for past failure in the academic performance of high school students in the Araucania Region of Chile. Three thousand three hundred and fourty eight Mapuche and non-Mapuche students participated in the study. Consistent with the Culture and Behavior model that guided the research, the test of causal models based on the analysis of structural equations show that academic performance is in part a function of variations in the level of fatalism, directly as well as indirectly through its influence in the attribution processes and failure-related emotions. In general, the model representing the proposed structure of relations among fatalism, attributions, and emotions as determinants of academic performance fit the data for both Mapuche and non-Mapuche students. However, results show that some of the relations in the model are different for students from these two ethnic groups. Finally, according to the results from the analysis of causal models, family SES appear to be the most important determinant of fatalism

This article resorts to the alternative nomenclature of ‘neuroliberalism’ to explicitly state how the hegemonical discourse of market produces an ideological fantasy which, supported by a ‘gladiatorial ethics’, redefines classical concepts of liberalism. In the first part, we shall focus on the description of neuroliberalism as theory of social selection. In the second part, we aim to specify its operativity as apparatuses of indoctrination applies to individuals vulnerable to possibility conditions beyond their control. Thus, the neoliberal globalization is cheerfully applied through the consent of individuals who are repressed by a pre-adapted satisfaction to the paradigm of the struggle for existence (AU)

There is today the consensus that child poverty is a complex phenomenon and that its impact on boys and girls puts at stake the human capital of our countries. To comply with the rights of children and adolescents, it is necessary to eradicate both, child and general poverty, and it is essential to influence into the determinants of health. Data are essential to identify the most disadvantaged children, yet, it is possible that some of the children with a higher risk of poverty are not represented in household surveys due to the fact that these groups tend to live in remote areas or in families and communities whose presence may not be registered in the official records. Hence, it is possible that all these groups are invisible to the statistics. This article is a call to public health professionals, paediatricians and other groups, to analyze and study the impact of poverty among child population and put pressure to the institutions that must act in favour of vulnerable groups such as children. In short, we have improved, however, there is still much to be done. It would be intolerable to have a child who dies of hunger, but there is not only one, there dies one every 4 seconds. Resources for children are still considered as a cost; nevertheless, the reality is that they are the best investment for the future (AU)

RESUMO

OBJECTIVES: To analyze the influence of socioeconomic and demographic factors (gender, economic class, age and marital status) on the occurrence of temporomandibular disorder. Study DESIGN: One hundred individuals from urban areas in the city of Recife (Brazil) registered at Family Health Units was examined using Axis I of the Research Diagnostic Criteria for Temporomandibular Disorders (RDC/TMD) which addresses myofascial pain and joint problems (disc displacement, arthralgia, osteoarthritis and oeste- oarthrosis). The Brazilian Economic Classification Criteria (CCEB) was used for the collection of socioeconomic and demographic data. Then, it was categorized as Class A (high social class), Classes B/C (middle class) and Classes D/E (very poor social class). The results were analyzed using Pearson's chi-square test for proportions, Fisher's exact test, nonparametric Mann-Whitney test and Binary logistic regression analysis. RESULTS: None of the participants belonged to Class A, 72% belonged to Classes B/C and 28% belonged to Classes D/E. The multivariate analysis revealed that participants from Classes D/E had a 4.35-fold greater chance of exhibiting myofascial pain and 11.3-fold greater chance of exhibiting joint problems. CONCLUSIONS: Poverty is a important condition to exhibit myofascial pain and joint problems

This study aimed to analyze the cultural maintenance and adaptation dimensions expressed by Moroccan, Romanian, and Ecuadorian immigrants in Spain, as well as psychosocial and social-demographic variables that predicted such tendencies. A correlational study was carried out with immigrants of Moroccan (N = 71), Romanian (N = 74), and Ecuadorian origin (N = 70) who responded to a questionnaire reporting their tendency to maintain the original culture, to adapt to the host culture, and their perceived duty to adapt to the host culture. It was also measured the stereotype dimensions of warmth and competence about Spanish people, out-group threat, in-group identification, perceived in-out-group similarity, nature of out-group contact, perception of inter-group relations, perceived enrichment by immigration, and some social-demographic variables. Results showed the importance of immigrants’ origin on all variables of the study. In addition, the predictors of acculturation dimensions were different depending on the group considered. These results highlight the need for specific interventions, as each immigrant group faces the adaptation process to the new host society in a different way (AU)

RESUMO

Background and Objectives: Many international studies point to the negative impact of migration on refugee mental health while others consider the social and political aspects of resettlement are more important. This paper presents the findings from studies examining the degree of demoralization and the impact of other factors on resettlement among three cohorts of resettled refugees and migrant people residing in Australia, Canada and New Zealand. The aims were to determine: participant levels of demoralization; ascertain if the goals contained in the New Zealand Immigration Settlement Strategy are achievable and whether the lack of such goals impacted on participant levels of demoralization. Methods: Study questionnaires, standardized inventories, focus groups, individual semistructured interviews, and a demoralisation scale were completed by three different cohorts of refugee and migrant people attending mental health and resettlement services in Australia, Canada and New Zealand. The data was analyzed using statistical and thematic analysis. Results: While a degree of demoralization was evident across all cohorts significant differences (p < 0.01) were found between mental health participant scores in comparison to non-clinical cohorts. Factors such as an ability to speak English (p < 0.01) and unemployment (p < 0.001) also significantly impacted on the demoralization mean scores. Conclusions: The findings support the view that social and cultural issues play a role in understanding the degree of psychological distress among culturally diverse clients. Thus, in order to reduce the risk, additional factors associated with migration that may impact on resettlement need to be taken into account (AU)

The arrival of inmigrants from countries with different cultures set challenges in the receiver society. The intercultural mediation emerges because of the arrival of inmigrants during the last decade and the understanding necessity between the different cultures and the autochthonous society in order to promote a multicultural society. The objective of this study is to think about the intercultural mediation in health, by means of a bibliographical analysis, as the factor of being a link between people from different cultures does not enable for being considered as intercultural mediators. Between the barriers that exist in the context of the intercultural mediation are the difficulty in the interpretation, the fact that there is no common formation of mediators and health agents, the phsychological load and a non-standarized formation. The lack of recognition on the half of the health proffesionals and the economic expense that the introduction of a new professional figure supposes make that the positive effects that provoque the intercultural mediators in the health-care systems are not seen (AU)

RESUMO

This study focuses on 606 Brazilian women’s cultural models regarding their relation with their family, as evaluated by the Family Allocentrism Idiocentrism Scale (FAS). The scale was translated into Portuguese, submitted to back-translation and adapted. Analyses of the scale’s structure indicated that the best fit model involves two independent factors. Univariate GLM (General Linear Model) analyses showed that the place where mothers were raised presented a significant effect on their scores on factor 1 (normative familial allocentrism). Mothers raised on rural areas have higher scores on this factor, than the ones raised on urban areas. The opposite occurred with factor 2 (relational familial allocentrism). The set of evidences indicate that the FAS may be a bi-dimensional measure. One dimension would be part of a more stable and basic model of relation to family, constructed during development. The second dimension would be related to more recent experiences and would be more readily affected by socio-cultural context changes, including in acculturation processes (AU)

Nobody can escape that we are in crisis. Already are responsible every day media, risk agencies and abstract but crucial markets reminded us. In this crisis, deep, prolonged and distressing health systems have been in the spotlight of national Governments and corporations, as key elements of building and resolution of the crisis. Generation because it interprets its inefficiency is responsible for much of the crisis. Resolution because it is understood that actions that envelope the same are carried out they shall foster the output. So then we have two key elements: crisis and health systems, which combine very differently but which inevitably and unfortunately, have been associated on a permanent basis. To understand this symbiosis and try to analyze it I operate the simple formula of semantically understanding what is crisis and what health crisis(AU)

There is a large body of scientific knowledge about school violence and bullying in Europe and some other regions of the so-called developed world. However, improvement is scarce in poor and developing regions, as in the case of Latin America and, in particular, Nicaragua. The goal of this work was to determine the prevalence of the bullying phenomenon in Nicaraguan primary schools, to analyze the eventual relationships between the different forms of violence used by the students and to explore, in relation to these aspects, the similarities and differences between boys and girls. For this purpose, we surveyed 3042 pupils of primary school (50.3% girls) using the «Cuestionario sobre Convivencia, Violencia y Experiencias de Riesgo» (COVER, in English, Questionnaire about Living Together, Violence and Risk Experiences). We found that the level of involvement in bullying is significantly higher than in developed countries, that boys are more involved than girls in verbal, physical and psychological bullying, and that there are no differences with regard to social exclusion. The results are discussed, comparing them with studies conducted in different countries but with similar methodologies (AU)

Background: In Mexico 45% of the population experiences some degree of food insecurity. The aim of this study was to determine the actions that are undertaken by single women to reduce the effects of lack of access to food on their Families. Methods: Focus groups were carried out with 44 women who were heads of family and participating in a governmental program aimed at people in poverty. Results: The strategies mentioned by participants were grouped into three categories: the first one was related to food acquisition and management (e.g. buy cheap food), the second with the acquisition of financial resources (e.g. entering the informal labor market) and the third corresponded to the attendance to social support networks (e.g. to get help from family members). Conclusions: Validating the conceptual model of food insecurity (e.g. families handle this situation by trying to reduce its effects), the experiences of this group of Mexican women are similar to those observed in other societies (AU)

This study aims to describe characteristics and job conditions in a sample of 277 immigrants of different nationalities in Spain (25.4% in unregulated situation), to know their degree of life satisfaction, to show some of the factors that predict their satisfaction with life, and to reveal possible differences between immigrants with varying legal status. The independent variables that have been considered are: life satisfaction in their country of origin, current social support and job satisfaction (both extrinsic and intrinsic). The results show that the immigrants experience meagre increases in life satisfaction in the new country, no increase in their feeling of happiness, and that there is a clear different degree of life satisfaction among immigrants with different legal statuses (higher in status regularized immigrants). The regression analysis shows that 50.9% of the variance of present life satisfaction for immigrants in an irregular legal status is predicted by the life satisfaction related to their own country. However, for those immigrants with residence permit, 47.2% of the pre-sent life satisfaction is explained by life satisfaction in their own country, social support and intrinsic job satisfaction (AU)

Concordance or discrepancy between majority and minority acculturation attitudes, and between majority attitudes and perceptions of minority acculturation, as well as their influence on intergroup relations have recently begun to be evaluated. This work attempts to widen the perspective of the second approach, using the Relative Acculturation Extended Model (RAEM) as a reference. Acculturation attitudes of native residents in the south of Spain, where there is a strong influx of immigrants, are compared to their perceptions of the strategies that Maghrebian immigrants are putting into practice, specifically considering the different areas of acculturation in the RAEM. The different levels of concordance are also compared to prejudice against the immigrants. The results show that the discrepancy between attitudes and perceptions is greater in the areas pertaining to the hard core of the culture (family, religious beliefs and way of thinking). Furthermore, persons on a conflictual level of concordance generally expressed more prejudice against Maghrebian immigrants than those on a consensual level. The results are discussed in comparison to those found in previous studies with other majority and minority groups and in other contexts (AU)

The term hebephrenia, coined by classical psychiatry, was replaced by undifferentiated psychosis in modern textbooks. A clinical case, that complexity has forced the intervention of several psychiatric network services, shows that the concept of hebephrenia remains useful and current (AU)

Some theoreticians of organisational commitment have proposed that culture is an important determinant of organisational commitment. Nevertheless, very few studies have examined the role that work teams culture (subculture) and their cultural gaps play in commitment. This study is an attempt to overcome this lack. Using a sample of 375 work teams from various public and private organisations, it was found that the results confirmed our proposals. Cultural gaps were negatively related to commitment; the teams subculture was positively related to commitment, and more highly to commitment to values than to commitment to continuing. Contrary to the results of other studies, the demographic variables (age, time on the team, time in the company) were not significant, except that educational level was related to the commitment to continue. The implications of these results are analysed
