In this article we start by submitting a definition of transhumanism and then turn to the main bioethi-cal problems that arise from it, with particular attention to the so-called human enhancement perspective.Secondly, and without being exhaustive, we shall seek to identify some of the main challenges posed byemerging sciences in the 21st century, specially with an eye to convergent technologies or NBICs (nanote-chnology, biotechnology, informatics and cognitive sciences). And finally, we end up by enumerating someof the bioethical questions every researcher should take into account before considering applying any newtechnology on humans in the coming decades.(AU)

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: The learning of scientific and technological subjects is fundamental in the society of the 21st century. However, a gender gap is detected in the choice of degrees in these subjects. Recent studies indicate the need to take action from the primary education stage to increase student motivation towards these disciplines. METHODS: We worked with a sample of 147 students in the final years of Primary Education. SRL and serious games were applied in initial tasks to computer programming. The objectives were to study the influence of gender, environment and academic level variables on the results in the resolution of initial programming tasks and on student satisfaction with their completion. RESULTS: The mean level of results in these tasks was high (8 out of 10). However, significant differences were found for gender, academic level, and the covariate age. With respect to satisfaction, no significant differences were found except in the continuity of work. CONCLUSIONS: The use of SRL and serious play tasks promotes good levels of performance and satisfaction in all students, although differences in favour of the male gender are detected

The current professional interest brief aims to outline the feasibility of using the Implicit Relational Assessment Procedure (IRAP) in a pilot study of individuals who heard voices and of whom the majority had been given a diagnosis of psychosis, and a comparison sample of non-voice hearing controls against which the clinical data could be compared (clinical voice hearers, N= 9; controls, N= 9). The IRAP assessed acceptance and avoidance of positively versus negatively valenced voices. All clinical participants completed the IRAP in terms of reaching the standard accuracy and latency criteria, thus demonstrating that a clinical (specifically psychosis) sample can complete content-specific IRAPs. Indeed, some procedural modifications were required and these have been outlined in the current manuscript. Preliminary results at both the group and individual levels appear to be in a meaningful direction for the psychosis sample, but not for the controls, which was consistent with our predictions. Our preliminary data support the view that the IRAP may be used effectively with a resident in-patient population (AU)

Introduction. The perception of colour is one of the visual functions affected by optic neuritis. Most of the tests currently available for evaluating dichromatism are based on assessing the hue, but no clinical studies have been conducted to investigate the formation of afterimages on the retina of these patients. Aims. To evaluate the dichromatism acquired in demyelinating optic neuritis by means of the formation of afterimages on the retina. Subjects and methods. This is an observation-based, cross-sectional, case-control study. The cases are patients with at least one bout of optic neuritis and confirmed multiple sclerosis. A healthy age- and sex-paired control was selected for each case. The main variable is the capacity to see afterimages after saturation of the retinal photoreceptor cells. A specific computer application was developed to evaluate this phenomenon. Results. The sample consisted of 30 cases and 30 controls (63% females; mean age: 33 years; range: 18-48 years). The cases showed less probability of seeing the afterimage (36.6% of the cases, while none of the controls failed to see an afterimage) and, if it was seen, it remained for less time. The ROC curve shows a sensitivity of 86.3% and a specificity of 83.3%. The odds ratio was 5 (95% confidence interval: 2.21-11.3) for the probability of seeing the afterimage in controls versus cases. Conclusions. Patients with at least one episode of optic neuritis presented a lower capacity to observe afterimages. The test is therefore useful in the assessment and follow-up of functional damage in demyelinating optic neuropathies (AU)

RESUMO

Aim: To describe the characteristics and content of the available viral hepatitis mobile applications, as well as assess the level of participation of medical professionals in their development. Methods: A descriptive observational study was carried out in September 2013. We searched smartphone apps specifically relating to the viral hepatitis for using a keyword search with the following terms; "hepatitis", "hepatology", "hbv" and "hcv" in the Google Play Store (Android) and the Apple App Store (iOS). Data recorded included: name, platform, category, cost, user star rating, number of downloads, date the app was updated by the developer and target audience. We analysed the content of the applications, and these were then categorised based on the viral hepatitis type into three groups. We conducted an analysis in which we specifically examined the authorship in order to assess the prevalence of health professional participation in their development. Results: A total of 33 apps were included (from 232 that were identified), among which there were 10 duplicates. Most of these apps were uploaded under the medical category. Three had ratings less than 3.9 stars (out of 5). Only 6 apps had exceeded 1000 downloads. A total of 12 apps were aimed at health professionals, while 4 focused on patients (7 for both of them). The participation of health professionals in the development of apps was 56.6%. Conclusions: Viral hepatitis apps are available for both professionals and patients; however, much of the information contained within them is often not validated. They should be certificated

The need for tools to process all the information generated in the field of nanotechnology has led to the development of a new discipline known as nanoinformatics. In the coming years, it is expected to have databases with information, not only on the physicochemical properties of nanomaterials, but also with information on the potential interactions with environment and biological systems, which will enable search for new biomedical applications of nanomaterials, without forgetting their toxicological aspects. In this review, various standardization resources, ontologies, databases, initiatives and partnerships that will help manage the information generated on nanomaterials are presented, especially those useful in biomedical research and the toxicology of nanomaterials. In addition, other complementary web resources are described with the aim of facilitating the process of self-learning and the development of curriculum contents of nanotechnology in higher education centers (AU)

In this paper, the question is discussed of whether it is worthwhile to devote time to providing feedback to undergraduate Computer Science students before and after they do programming exercises. A comparative study was carried out in two different years of the same course taught by the same lecturer. In the first year, feedback was only provided after each exercise was finished, while in the second year feedback was provided both before and after each exercise was finished. The results confirm that even when the number of students is higher than one hundred; it is still worthwhile to provide feedback before and after each Computer Science exercise to achieve better scores, and a drastic decrease in the drop-out rate, which was reduced to zero (AU)

A important issue regarding the educational practice in the EEES, is the interest in the students’ global work from which curricular ECST system has been established. This particular approach requires a revision of the methodology applied in teaching. It is well known that the Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) have been extended to all social sectors and have produced a special impact on the educational system. In this context, Internet has proved to be not only important as a channel for the transmission of contents but also as a potential educational tool since incorporates interactivity, allows a personalized use of multiple resources, is adaptable to particular needs in the formative process and allows to combine different kinds of resources. The application of ICT in the University studies is more extended every day. In spite of the limitations imposed by the existence of groups formed by a high number of students, a clear trend seems to consolidate nowadays: the creation of virtual environments supporting on-site teaching and which are integrated as much as possible in the study schedules. The present communication focuses on these general aspects in relation with the experience accumulated in the development of several educational resources and the creation of a specific virtual environment for students which enrolled in Physical- Chemistry (Pharmacy section) during the past academic years. The virtual environment developed is a) a designed space not for accumulating static HTML pages but structured for allowing to update it with periodical contributions; b) an interactive space where the usual communicative exchange between students and teacher as well as between students is facilitated; c) a reference in which to incorporate complementary resources in order to support 'on site' teaching; and d) a place to integrate different tools with application in educational matters(AU)
