Aim: To determine the association of hand grip strength and knee extensor strength with the nutritional status of community-dwelling older adults. Material and methods: Observational cross-sectional study. Weight and height of 847 older adults were analyzed according to body mass index and classified into four nutritional categories according to the Chilean Ministry of Health. Hand grip and knee extensors strength for both extremities were evaluated. Strength was normalized by body mass. Spearman's correlation between body mass index and muscle strength was used. Results: The sample was 582 women, 265 men and an average age of 71.72±7.09. The women had a BMI of 30.03±5.48 and the men of 27.64 ± 4.05, the most numerous category was normal weight (n = 288) and the lowest low weight (n = 74). Hand grip strength presented a higher correlation than knee extensors, specifically, right hand grip strength (r: −0.40). The highest correlation and significance were presented by the obese category for all strength measurements, with right hand grip strength being the highest (r: −0.29). Conclusions: The increase in the nutritional status of older adults has a negative influence on muscle strength. The best association between body mass index and muscle strength was the right hand grip. The finding of the increase in life expectancy as the nutritional status of the sample decreases stands out. Future studies are needed to generate percentiles and normalized values in the Chilean population.(AU)

(AU)

Objectives. To evaluate a clinical pharmacist’s inclusion in emergency department (ED) care in terms of the effect on on 30-day revisits after discharge from the ED and patient satisfaction. Methods. Randomized, controlled parallel-group pragmatic trial in a university hospital ED. Recruited patients were randomly assigned to a control group for standard care only or an intervention group to receive standard care plus the attention of a clinical pharmacist integrated into the care team to optimize the selection and evaluation of medications and provide pharmacotherapeutic education on the patient’s discharge. The primary outcome was unplanned revisits within 30 days after discharge because of the same complaint that led to the initial ED visit. Between-group differences were analyzed with Kaplan-Meier survival curves and log-rank tests. The association between the intervention and time to the outcome event was explored with multivariate Cox proportional hazard regression analysis. Results. A total of 1001 patients were enrolled (intervention, 500; control, 501). Patients in both groups were similar. A majority were women (61.5%), and the median age (interquartile range) was 51 years (33-65 years). The pharmacist’s intervention significantly reduced the number of 30-day revisits to any ED: 25 (6.3%) revisited vs 66 (16.7%) in the control group. The adjusted hazard ratio (aHR) was 0.29 (95% CI, 0.17-0.50). Fifteen patients (3.0%) from the intervention group revisited the same ED vs 32 (6.5%) from the control group (aHR, 0.46 [95% CI, 0.24-0.87]). More patients expressed satisfaction in the intervention group (87.2%) than in the control group ( 83.2%) (P<.05). Conclusions. Including a clinical pharmacist in ED care substantially reduces the number of 30-day revisits and increases patient satisfaction. (AU)

Background: the Mediterranean diet has been associated with a lower prevalence of obesity and metabolic syndrome, and with healthierlifestyles in adults and children, but data is scarce in younger ages. The Mediterranean-type ecosystem of the central region of Chile as well asits traditional gastronomy would facilitate the adoption of this dietary pattern. Objectives: to assess the adherence to Mediterranean diet in preschoolers and their parents, and to evaluate the impact of a nutrition educationintervention and diet implementation. Methods: prospective cohort study. The KidMed index was applied to children older than 18 months, and the Mediterranean Dietary Index inChile (Chilean-MDI) to their parents, before and after a remote educational intervention. Results: one hundred and thirty-nine families participated, with 95 preschoolers; 56 % were girls, aged 26.2 ± 8.7 months. The basal meanKidMed score was 7.4 ± 1.9 and increased to 7.9 ± 1.9 after the intervention (p = 0.1). The Chilean-MDI score was 6.9 ± 1.8 and 7.1 ± 1.7,respectively (p = 0.09). When separated by categories, there was improvement from low and moderate adherence to optimal adherence in bothchildren and their parents (Chi2, p = 0.009 y p = 0.04). In 58 dyads, there was a positive correlation between the KidMed and the Chilean-MDIindex, pre- and post-intervention (Pearson R = 0.3 y 0.34; p = 0.004 y 0.003, respectively). Conclusions: most of these sample of preschoolers and their parents had a moderate adherence to Mediterranean diet, with an improvementafter an educational intervention.(AU)

Background: a healthy food intake pattern, specifically the Mediterranean diet (MedDiet), is a factor associated with reduced risk, lowerprevalence, and better management of chronic diseases. However, there is limited information regarding how patients integrate proposals foradherence to this food pattern in their daily lives. Objective: to identify factors and conditions that influence adherence to the MedDiet in Chile. Methods: an exploratory qualitative study was applied in 35 to 65-year-old patients of both sexes who presented at least one diagnostic criterionof metabolic syndrome (MetS). Through in-depth interviews and focal groups, knowledge, assessment, attitudes, and practices associated withchanges and maintenance of healthy eating habits, with emphasis on the MedDiet, were investigated. Information analysis was carried out underthe grounded theory approach using the ATLAS.ti software. Results: participants recognized the value of healthy eating, including the MedDiet, but declared low knowledge (identification of single foodsitems) together with facilitators (variety of ingredients) and limiting factors (taste, availability/cost of some items, family dynamics) for its routineadoption. In addition, change in eating habits generates a high initial cognitive and emotional load that requires not only individual but alsorelational effort as it implies modifications of family and collective practices. Conclusions: information obtained on barriers and opportunities to adhere to healthy eating such as the MedDiet is key to design and implementnutritional interventions based on this food pattern and that can be sustainable in time for chronic disease management in Chile.(AU)

Introduction: In several sports, body composition (BC) isan important characteristic that is periodically evaluated inathletes, as it is considered an important indicator of physicalcondition. Objective: To identify the anthropometric indices thatallow predicting fat-free mass (FFM) in selected university 3x3basketball players belonging to the International University Sports Federation (FISU). Methodology: A descriptive cross-sectional study was de-signed in young basketball players from 5 university teamsbelonging to FISU (Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Mexico and Peru). Forty-six basketball pla-yers (24 males and 22 females) with an age range of 18 to 23 years participated voluntarily. Weight, height and FFM wereevaluated by electrical bioimpedance. Body mass index (BMI),tri-ponderal index (TPI), and body surface area (BSA) werecalculated. Results: The mean age of males was 21.1±1.9 years andof females 21.3±2.0 years. The explanatory power betweenFFM with BSA in both sexes were high (males R2= 79%, andin women 80<%). BMI and TPI showed lower values rangingfrom R2= 0.07 to R2= 36%). The best fits of the RMSE werefor BSA and in both sexes (RMSE= 3.2 to 4.3). Conclusion: The results of the study have shown that ASCis the best predictor of FFM in relation to BMI and TPI. Thesefindings suggest the use of BSA to estimate the FFM in young3x3 basketball players of both sexes.(AU)

Introduction: Body composition is key to having an ade-quate state of health and fitness. Also, muscle strength isused as an important predictor of sports performance. Objective: To relate body adiposity and hand grip strengthto nutritional concerns in university athletes. Methodology: A descriptive study (comparative-correla-tional) was carried out in 130 university athletes from a uni-versity in Chile (90 men and 40 women). The age range wasbetween 18 and 28 years. Anthropometric measurementswere evaluated: weight, height, 5 skinfolds (bicipital, tricipi-tal, subscapular, suprailiac and abdominal), manual gripstrength (MPF) and the food concern scale was applied. Bodyfat %, body mass index (BMI) were calculated. Results: The food preoccupation scale was negatively re-lated to body adiposity indicators (r= -0.16 to -0.33; p<0.05),while the correlations of FPM (right and left) with the foodpreoccupation scale were positive (r= 0.20 to 0.24; p<0.05).Males categorized with high and moderate concern about ea-ting presented better levels of adiposity and higher FPM in theright hand (p<0.05), while females, only those categorizedwith high level of concern presented low levels of adiposityand better FPM in both hands (p<0.05).Conclusion: Young people with a higher level of concernabout food showed lower levels of body adiposity and betterperformance in FPM than their counterparts with lower levelsof concern. These results suggest promoting talks regardingfood consumption, since it can be an excellent alternative tosensitize young people to take care of their body adiposityand isometric strength.(AU)

(AU)

(AU)

Objective: To evaluate silica exposure among Chilean miners at high altitude, using dif-ferent methodological approaches, for the purpose of determining the safest method to control exposures. Methods: The 46 miners in the sample worked at 3000 meters above sea level in nonstan-dard work shifts, consisting of four consecutive 12-hour days, followed by four consecutive days off. Silica samples were obtained in each of the jobs positions of these 46 high-altitude miners. The results of the concentrations are presented in mg/m3. Exposures were evalu-ated in compatison to the Threshold Limit Value (Method 1) and using two other methodol-ogies that incorporate respiratory parameters (Methods 2 and 3). The proportion of miners at risk was determined with each of these methods and compared. Results: Based on the Threshold Limit Value (Method 1), 43.48% of miners were classified as being at risk. With the other two methods that incorporate respiratory parameters, the proportion of overexposed miners was 82.61% with Method 2, and 73.91% with Method 3.Conclusions: Of the three methods analyzed, the one that considers the respiratory param-eter minute volume, through the estimation of the inhaled dose, is the safest to define the group of miners at risk due to exposure to silica at high altitude (AU)

RESUMO

The main aim of the research is to determine a comparative analysis related to dietary habits and physical fitness in Chilean and Argentine athletes. Research from a comparison of the eating patterns and levels of physical fitness of athletes from Chile and Argentina are outlined related to study. The research explores how the athletes' cultural backgrounds shaped their dietary preferences, distribution of macronutrients, and training approaches. Argentina emphasizes steak, pasta, and dairy products; Chile observes a varied diet influenced by indigenous customs. For measuring the research based on primary data analysis, the research used SPSS software, and the run results included descriptive statistics, correlation coefficient, model summary, chi-square values, and control charts between them. Football teams from both nations are world-class, but their athletes' diets and training plans are very different. The analysis identifies areas that might benefit from more study, suchas how these nutritional differences affect athletes' performance and how each country adjusts to its unique environment. Overall, this comparative study highlights the value of continued research and cooperation with sports science and nutrition specialists while offering a basic understanding of the complex relationship between culture, diet, and physical fitness in the sporting contexts of Chile and Argentina (AU)

Objective:To analyse the impact of 10 years of blended echocardiography teaching. Methods and results: A questionnaire was emailed to all medical doctors who graduated from the blended learning diploma in echocardiography developed by the University of Chile and taught by a team from Chile and Spain. One hundred and forty of the 210 students who graduated from the program between 2011 and 2020 completed the questionnaire: 53.57% were anaesthesiologists, and 26.42% were intensivists. More than 85% of respondents indicated that the online teaching met their expectations, and 70.2% indicated that the hands-on practice fulfilled the stated objectives. In a retrospective analysis using self-reported data, graduates reported that their use of transthoracic and transoesophageal echocardiography has increased from 24.29% to 40.71% and from 13.57% to 27.86%, repectively, after the programme compared to before the programme. They used echocardiography mainly in the perioperative period (56.7%) and during intensive care (32.3%), while only 11% of respondents used it in emergency care units. Nearly all (92.4%) respondents reported that the skills learned was very useful in their professional practice. Conclusions: Ten years after its launch, the blended learning diploma in echocardiography was well rated by graduate specialists, and is associated with a significant increase in the use of echocardiography in the perioperative period and during intensive care. The main challenges are to establish a longer period of practice and achieve greater implantation in emergency medicine.(AU)

Objective: Estimate daily infections of COVID-19 during the first year of the pandemic in the Santiago Metropolitan Region (SRM) in Chile and Chile that are more realistic than those officially registered. Method: Retrospective estimate of daily infections from daily data on COVID-19 deaths, a seroprevalence study, and the REMEDID (Retrospective Methodology to Estimate Daily Infections from Deaths) algorithm. Results: In SRM, it is observed that: 1) the maximum peak of infections was more than double that registered in the official statistics; 2) such peak was reached on May 22 (95% CI: 20–24 May), 2022, that is, 24 days before the official date of the peak of infections; and 3) the first estimated contagion took place on January 28, 2020 (95% CI: January 21 to February 16), that is, 36 days before the official date. In Chile, the situation is similar. During the first wave SRM accounted for 70%–76% of those infected in Chile, while from August 2020 onwards it accounted for 36%–39%. Conclusions: The official records of COVID-19 infections in SRM and Chile underestimated the real number of positives and showed a delay of about a month in the dynamics of infections. This is not an isolated situation, as it is known to have been the case in other countries as well. However, it is important to have reliable estimates for a correct modeling of the spread of the virus.(AU)
