RESUMO

Abstract Objective: To identify the most prevalent oral lesions based on reports from a pathology institute's reports and associations between malignant and oral potentially malignant disorders with patient's demographic variables and the anatomical location. Material and Methods: All 1,298 histopathological reports of oral lesions recorded in the database were reviewed. Demographic variables, anatomical location of the lesion, histopathological diagnosis of the lesions, and their biological behavior were analyzed. Results: Regarding the biological behavior of the identified lesions, benign lesions were predominant (70%), followed by lesions of undetermined behavior (14.3%), malignant lesions (14.2%), absence of histological alteration (1.2%), and finally, oral potentially malignant disorders (0.5%). The anatomical locations of the most prevalent oral lesions potentially malignant disorders and malignant were in the following structures of the oral cavity: gums, buccal mucosa, floor of the mouth and hard palate (p=49.2%), and tongue (p=48.7%). Conclusion: The probability of malignant and premalignant lesions was higher among males (PR= 4.21; 95% CI 2.08-6.22), the increase in age (PR = 1.06; 95% CI 1.05-1.08), and in the tongue region (PR = 5.48; 95% CI 1.67; 17.92). Identification of malignant and potentially malignant oral conditions is higher in older men and in tongue specimens.

It is known that the oral cavity is the gateway to many microorganisms and that it has some genera of bacteria that when they associate or proliferate in excess, with the lack of correct hygiene, environmental and immunological factors can cause damage in some parts of the teeth such as in pulp tissue and root canals. In this sense, endodontics has been able to treat people with dental problems at very early stages such as prophylactic measures to infectious cases that affect the pulp of teeth causing perirradicular lesions that are infections caused by microorganisms, therefore, it is necessary that dentistry offer positive transformations through techniques that are more predictable for treatments. The literature has indicated the use of laser therapy as an auxiliary technique for endodontic treatment for its minimal invasive, precise and effective potential in shorter time of cure of oral pathologies such as perirradicular lesions. This study aimed to address the importance of laser therapy on the pathological variables of patients with perirradicular lesions. To accomplish this, it was necessary to seek studies in the literature that associate this type of treatment and its efficiency in the treatment of this pathology. To carry out this research it was necessary to seek data in the literature that deal with the subject to investigate the time indicated for treatment with laser therapy as well as the stage at which lesions can be treated with the aid of this method. Corroborating the study, we present a clinical case(AU)

Early oral aging has an increasing incidence in dental offices and its degradation to oral tissues requires attention from the dentist due to its high degree of complexity. This premature aging is mainly caused by parafunctional habits, diet, or both. Its consequences are pathological wear of dental tissues, passive extrusion, loss of vertical dimension and aesthetic and functional impairment. Because of this, the present study aims to carry out a clinical case report in a young patient with an aesthetic complaint as a result of parafunctional habits, where an oral rehabilitation was carried out involving an increase in the vertical dimension of occlusion through Table Tops without dental wear and aesthetic restorations, both with composite resin. This rehabilitation returned the patient's OVD, bringing comfort, stable contacts, disocclusion guides and aesthetic and functional satisfaction on the part of the patient(AU)

Hemangiomas are benign soft tissue neoplasms. These are lesions characterized by the proliferation of endothelial cells. Objectives: The objective of this work is to demonstrate through a literature review about the main hemangiomas of dental interest and clinical characteristics and therapeutic approaches. Literature review: The study showed a prevalence of up to 6% in the general population, being the most common tumor in childhood. These lesions presents a rapid postnatal growth, which may take months until two years on average, but usually after this period their involution occurs. The diagnosis is commonly based on clinical characteristics and patient's history. It is important to understand that the histopathological study may be necessary in cases that the diagnostic is uncertainty, in order to differentiate it from other serious neoplasms. Main complications related to injuries, ulceration and hemorrhage can be highlighted, in addition to secondary infections that can cause a high rate of morbidity. Thus, it is essential that dentists recognize such pathologies and be able to treat them. Final considerations: Was possible do observe that hemangiomas are uncommon vascular manifestations for the dental surgeon, however, the professional must know to diagnose and treat them. Among the affected areas, these lesions are frequently seen in the oral cavity and the treatment consists of following up with conservative interventions(AU)

Abstract Candidiasis is one of the most common fungal infections of oral cavity in humans, causing great oral discomfort, pain and aversion to food. To develop more effective antifungal systems for the treatment of oral candidiasis, an oral mucoadhesive wafer containing sertaconazole solid dispersion (STZ-SD) was developed in this study. Dispersion of STZ in Soluplus® as a solubility enhancement excipient was done by melting, solvent evaporation and freeze drying method at various STZ to Soluplus® ratios. The optimized STZ-SD was then incorporated in the sodium carboxymethyl cellulose (SCMC) gel, xanthan gum gel, or their combination to prepare the lyophilized wafers. The swelling capacity, porosity, and mechanical, release and mucoadhesive properties of the wafers, together with their antifungal activity, were then evaluated. The melting method sample with the ratio of 8:1 showed the best results in terms of saturation solubility and dissolution rate. The STZ-SD-composite wafer exhibited higher hardness and mucoadhesion, as compared to those made of the SCMC polymer. The STZ-SD-wafer also exhibited a greater antifungal effect when compared to the STZ-wafer. The present study, thus, suggested that the STZ-SD-wafer could serve as a novel effective delivery system for oral candidiasis treatment.

RESUMO

Abstract The purpose of this study was to compare the effect of different disinfection protocols of dentin on bond strength of an MDP-containing universal adhesive. Twelve extracted mandibular third molars were separated horizontally at the mid-coronal of crown to get smooth and sound dentin surfaces using low-speed diamond saw. The teeth were randomly fallen into four groups: chlorhexidine (CHX), ozone, Er,Cr:YSGG laser irradiation (LASER) and no treatment (control). After cavity disinfection application, a universal adhesive (G-Premio Bond) was applied to the surface of dentin according to self-etch mode as instructed by the manufacturer. After incremental built-up of composite resin (Charisma Smart), the specimens were immersed in distilled water at 37°C for 24h. Dentin/composite beams with 1 mm² cross sectional area were produced and micro-tensile bond strength (µTBS) was applied on these beams (n=20). Failure mods were determined under a stereomicroscope at ×40. The resin penetration of samples stained with Rhodamine B fluorochrome dye was examined with a confocal laser scanning microscope. Statistical analysis was performed with SPSS-22. Test results were analyzed using One-way Anova and Tukey HSD Post-Hoc tests (p0.5). All applications of cavity disinfection procedures decreased the µTBS of the resin-dentin interface.

Objective: Understand whether the collection site (toothless or toothless) influences the frequency of bacteria in the oral cavity. It was performed as an observational, prospective, and cross-sectional study. Methods: Clinical samples of the oral surfaces of the teeth and/or cheek mucosa were collected in the oral cavity of 37 patients who underwent elective cardiac surgery in the preoperative period from May to July 2019. The clinical samples collected were subjected to identification of colonies and antimicrobial sensitivity tests. Results: It was observed that regardless of whether the collection site is toothless or toothless, the microbial profile, socio-demographic variables, comorbidities, and risk factors do not statistically influence the choice of the collection site. Conclusions: there wasn't statistical difference between the strains found at the collection sites. Practical Implications: the result found is relevant for other researchers that will work with oral cavity collections since the chosen collection site will not influence the frequency of strains found.

ABSTRACT Introduction: The oral cavity can present the first clinical manifestations of leukemia, therefore; it is important to recognize their principal characteristics. Objective: To identify oral manifestations as the first clinical signs of leukemia. Methods: This is an integrative review, that gathered data from articles with oral manifestations of leukemia as part of its first clinical features. The were included case reports, case series, clinical research, or reviews with case reports. The variables that were considered relevant: age, sex, sites of the oral lesions, characteristics of the oral lesions, medical history and physical examination, time of evolution, radiographic examination, blood test results, initial diagnosis, differential diagnosis and final diagnosis. Results: A total of 31 studies were included, with a total of 33 individuals identified. There were 19 (57.57%) males and 14 (42.42%) females. The age range was from 1.6 to 74 years. Acute myeloid leukemia (72.72%) and acute lymphoid leukemia (18.18%) presented more oral manifestations as the first clinical signs of the disease. All individuals with leukemia presented lesions, such as ulcer, erosion, bleeding, ecchymosis, color change of the bluish or pale mucous membranes and areas of tissue necrosis. Hard tissue lesions were less frequent, being 6 (18.18%). Conclusion: The first clinical manifestations of leukemia can be present in the oral cavity, mainly in acute myeloid leukemia. The principal oral tissues affected were gingival tissue, buccal mucosa and hard and/or soft palate. When hard tissues, such as the maxilla bone or mandible bone were affected, dental mobility was the principal clinical sign.

Dental caries is a public health problem, in 2016 it affected 3500 million people. In children under six years of age, the progression of the lesion is faster, exposing them to early childhood caries and premature dental loss. To determine the health/disease status of the oral component of nursery school children from a school with social and economic vulnerability in the municipality of San Salvador, in 2018, according to the index and prevalence of dental caries disease. The study is descriptive, quantitative, cross-sectional, prospective. The units of analysis are children between four and five years of age, respecting all ethical aspects and confidentiality. The total of the universe made up of 96 children was taken. Results. The frequency of dental caries in the study population is 95 %, the decayed, missing and filled caries index is 6,38, which according to the World Health Organization is very high. The most affected tooth surface is occlusal, in the upper quadrants with approximately 40 % and in the lower quadrants with approximately 20 %. The majority of the population under study suffers from dental caries, being a minority that maintains the oral cavity in an optimal state.

RESUMO

Aim: This study aimed to evaluate the correlation between vertical dimension of occlusion (VDO) and various facial measurements in a sample of Sudanese adults. Material and Methods: A total of 113 dental students (33 males and 80 females) with a mean age of 21.7±1.26 years were enrolled in this study. Different facial measurements including (Eye-Mouth, Eye-Eye, Eye-Ear, and Ear Height) were compared with two different measurements of VDO: N-Gn (from the tip of the nose to the tip of the chin), and Sn-Me (from the base of the nose to the bottom of the chin). Pearson's correlation coefficient test was utilized for the correlation between the measured parameters. A p-value of less than 0.05 was considered significant for all analyses. Results: A significant positive correlation was shown between all measured facial distances and both measured VDO distances. Though, the strongest correlation was seen for the eye-mouth distance (r= 0.725, p<0.001), while the weakest was for ear height (r= 0.254, p= 0.007). A paired t-test revealed a significant longer N-Gn distance than Sn-Me distance. Also, it has been shown that there were no significant differences between right and left sides of the face. Conclusion: The distance measured from the outer canthus of the eye to the angle of the mouth can be used to predict Subnasale-Menton (Sn-Me) distance.

Abstract Fibrolipoma, a benign soft tissue adipose tumor, is a histological variant of lipoma. Clinically, it presents as a painless slow-growing mass, indistinguishable from other benign soft tissue tumors. In the oral cavity, it is mainly encountered in the buccal mucosa. Involvement of the palate is very rare; it accounts for around 7-14% of all oral fibrolipomas. In this article, we describe a case of fibrolipoma in the hard palate of a 70-year-old female, who presented with an asymptomatic pedunculated mass, characterized by a normal-colored and smooth surface, which have been present for 20 years. The lesion was excised, and histopathological study revealed a fibrolipoma. To the best of our knowledge, only 17 cases occurring in the palate have been reported in the literature. Since fibrolipoma presents clinical similarities with other benign soft tissue neoplasms, a thorough clinical examination and histopathological analysis are essential for obtaining diagnosis.

(AU)

Introduction: Ranula is a phenomenon of mucus leakage, also called mucus retention cyst, which occurs specifically in the mouth floor. The origin of the extravasated mucin is usually from the sublingual gland, but it can originate from the duct of the submandibular gland or even from the minor salivary glands it presents on the floor of the mouth. Larger sized ranulas usually arise from the body of the sublingual gland. Case report: This work is a case in a 5-year-old child with a ranula in the left tongue region, and discuss about the treatment of this pathology. Final considerations: There are several forms of treatment, the most used being marsupialization, concomitant or not with a surgical excision of the lesion and the involved salivary gland... (AU)

Objective: to present a case of vascular injury in an elderly patient treated by the sclerotherapy technique. Case report: male patient, 67 years old, victim of a stroke, sought dental care due to residual dental roots. During the physical examination, an exophytic lesion, violet in color, sessile base, approximately two centimeters, located in the left labial commissure, was identified. Diascopy was performed to confirm the origin of the alteration, which revealed that it was a vascular le sion. As the patient was elderly, hypertensive, with a history of stroke, conservative treatment was chosen, with sclerotherapy with 5% mon oethanolamine oleate in a single session. On return after seven days, partial regression of the lesion was observed and, after 30 days, the region was completely healed, with no traces of the alteration. Mon oethanolamine oleate causes a sterile, acute, dose-dependent inflam matory reaction in the vascular endothelium and extravascular tissues that results in fibrosis and obliteration of blood vessels, inducing re gression of the lesions. Conclusion: Based on the case presented and on the literature records, it is possible to affirm that sclerotherapy is a minimally invasive, effective, low-cost therapeutic alternative with a favorable aesthetic result in the treatment of oral vascular lesions...

Leishmaniasis is a group of diseases caused by protozoa of the genus Leishmania. Among the Leishmaniasis of the new world is American Tegumentary Leishmaniasis (ATL), which can manifest as primary lesions in the mucosa or skin of the head and neck region. These lesions can affect the oral cavity and / or the patient has signs and symptoms detectable by the dentist. The objective of this work is to carry out a bibliographic survey on ATL in the main databases, seeking to relate it to this area of activity. For this purpose, searches were carried out in the SciELO, Pubmed / MEDLINE and LILACS databases with the descriptors "Leishmaniasis Mucocutânea", "Oral Medicinal" and "Diagnostic", in the English and Portuguese languages, in the period between 2011 and 2021. As a result, 379 articles were found and, after considering the inclusion and exclusion criteria, 26 articles were selected. Therefore, ATL should be part of the differential diagnosis of lesions in the areas in which the dentist operates, enabling an early diagnosis and referral to appropriate medical treatment. In addition, this knowledge is necessary for public policies on prevention and education to be more effective, aiming at decreasing the prevalence of this pathology and increasing the patient's quality of life.
