Introduction. The association between lipid markers in childhood/adolescence and the incidence of clinical cardiovascular events in adulthood has been little explored in the bibliography. The objective of this systematic review was to analyze available evidence on this topic. Population and methods. This systematic review was conducted in accordance with the PRISMA guidelines. A comprehensive bibliographic search was done to find studies assessing the association between lipid levels in childhood and the incidence of cardiovascular events in adulthood. There were no language or geographic restrictions. Results. A total of 5 observational studies (all prospective cohorts) including 43 540 patients were identified and considered eligible for this study. Four studies assessed triglyceride levels; all reported a significant association between this lipid marker in childhood and cardiovascular events in adulthood. A study reported the same association with total cholesterol level, while another showed the predictive value of lipoprotein (a) for the same clinical outcome. Only one study assessed high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C), but it did not find an association with the endpoint of interest. The analysis of lowdensity lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) showed contradictory results, although the association was significant in the studies with a larger sample size and a higher number of events during follow-up. Conclusion. According to this review, alterations in lipid markers in childhood and adolescence are associated with a higher cardiovascular risk in early and middle adulthood.

Objective: To evaluate the characteristics of physical exercise programs for older adults and their effects during the COVID-19 pandemic. Methods: An integrative review was conducted between January and March 2022. A search was conducted in MEDLINE via PubMed, Lilacs via BVS, PEDro, and Cochrane Library. Experimental articles (randomized clinical trials, non-randomized trials, or quasi-experimental studies) published from 2019 to 2021, with no language restriction, and that used physical exercise programs for older adults (> 60 years) in their intervention were included. The studies were selected by reading the title, abstract, and full text. The selected articles had their results extracted using an online form, tabulated using an electronic spreadsheet, and analyzed qualitatively and quantitatively. Results: 113 studies were identified; 7 met the eligibility criteria and were included in the review, all randomized controlled trials. The multi-component exercise programs were more frequent (resistance, balance, flexibility, and aerobic), delivered remotelyand performed 2 to 7 times a week, lasting between 30 and 50 minutes. Significant effects were observed on physical function, body composition, blood triglycerides, the incidence of falls, physical activity, and functional capacity. Conclusions: The physical exercise programs used during the COVID-19 pandemic showed promising results for older adults. The programs proved to be a viable alternative for maintaining the physical, mental, and cognitive functions of older adults in times of public calamity.

Introduction: Dyslipidemia is one of the most common problems in children and adolescents and its study is important because of its strong correlation with atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease in adulthood. Many countries have developed national reference values investigating serum lipids using data based on their own national population. Our aim was to verify the lipid profile reference range by calculating percentile curves through the indirect method in our pediatric population. Materials and methods: The results of our database were analyzed using the indirect method. After applying filters and exclusion criteria, the 25th, 50th, 75th, 95th, and 99th percentiles were calculated for total cholesterol (TC), HDL cholesterol (HDL-C), non-HDL cholesterol (non-HDL-C), triglycerides (TG), and LDL cholesterol (LDL-C); for HDL-C, the 10th percentile was also calculated. The reference change values (RCV) were used to determine whether there was a clinically significant difference between the percentile values obtained and those used in the consensus of the Argentine Association of Pediatrics (SAP). Results: There was no clinically significant difference with the values proposed by the SAP, except for TG for ages 1, 5, and 7 years at the 95th percentile and for age 8 years at the 75th and 95th percentile; and for HDL-C at the 10th percentile for ages 1, 16, and 17 years. Discussion: Lipid percentiles were obtained and compared with the reference values used by the consensus on which the guidelines are based (AU)

Objective: To determine the relationship of basal triglycerides with the risk of developing cardiovascular disease in postmenopausal women. Method: Descriptive, observational and cross-sectional study, where 31 postmenopause patients with no history of cardiometabolic disease were determined anthropometric parameters (weight, height, BMI); fasting lipid profile (total cholesterol, triglycerides or TG, LDL,HDL, by colorimetric enzymatic method), Apo B-100 (byradial immunodiffusion), LDL/Apo B-100 and TG/HDL mathematical indices and calculation of non-HDL cholesterol. Results: the mean and deviation of the variables were: age:59±5 years with postmenopause time: 8.77±3.92 years; BMI:27.6±4.4 kg/m2; total cholesterol: 194±36 mg/dl; triglycerides:85±35 mg/dl; HDL: 33±8 mg/dl; LDL: 144±33 mg/dl; non-HDL: 159±37 mg/dl; Apo B-100: 172±246 mg/dl; LDL/Apo B-100: 1.15±0.03 and TG/HDL: 4.46±1.28. Discussion: Patients were found to be overweight, normal triglycerides, total and LDL cholesterol high, and low HDL. LDL-C/ApoB-100-100, which is related to LDL size and density, was below 1.3 indicating the presence of small-dense particles, while TG/HDL, which is used to estimate cardiovascular risk, was above the established cut-off of 3.5. Conclusions: When relating the basal triglycerides with LDL/Apo B-100 and TG/HDL, it is observed that from the triglyceride value of 100mg/dl, the presence of small-dense lipoprotein particuals anda high cardiovascular risk is observed, so it is necessary in postmenopausal women to follow up from the triglycerid evalue in 100 mg/dL since it could imply the development of cardiovascular diseases, in this population(AU)

Introduction: Metabolic syndrome is defined as a set of clinical conditions that affect approximately 25% of the world's population and 29.6% of Brazilians. This syndrome is related to increased cardiovascular outcomes, which may be predicted by the lipid profile. Bioactive compounds, such as monounsaturated fatty acids (MUFAs), are strong allies in preventing these outcomes. Avocado is an important food because it contains abundant bioactive compounds and MUFAs. However, few studies evaluated the effects of pure/virgin avocado oil on the lipid profile in humans with metabolic syndrome, and its effects on atherogenic indices are not known. Objective:This study evaluated avocado oil supplementation on lipid levels and atherogenic indices in patients with metabolic syndrome. Method: Thirty-one obese adults were randomised into a control group (soybean oil) and an intervention group (avocado oil). These groups were evaluated in the pre- and post-intervention periods (12 weeks) via clinical anamnesis and nutritional assessment. Results: The control group and the intervention group had higher intakes of lipids and saturated fat than recommended. For the lipid profile and atherogenic indices, no significant difference was observed between the pre- and postintervention periods. Conclusion: These results may have been due to the absence of dietary control, medication overload, intervention duration, mode of administration and dose of the supplement. Therefore, future studies on the effects of avocado oil are needed in this population to better control these variables.

BACKGROUND: The spread of SARS-CoV-2 required widespread lockdown to mitigate the pandemic. Argentine authorities imposed preventive social isolation for 234 days (March 20th to November 9th 2020). This measure led to major changes in the population's lifestyle. AIM: To examine the influence of COVID-19 lockdown measures on the metabolic profile of HIV-infected patients in Argentina. METHODS: Retrospective cohort study of 10,239 HIV-infected patients under follow up in a private clinic for HIV care. Adult patients with ongoing antiretroviral therapy (ART) and a baseline determination of blood glucose, total cholesterol, HDL-cholesterol and triglycerides done before lockdown (BL: second semester of 2019) and a second determination during lockdown (DL: May 2020) were included. Patients with recent changes in ART that may have metabolic impact, those starting lipid/glucose lowering agents and pregnant women were excluded. Categorical variables were compared using the χ2 test or Fisher's exact test, and continuous variables using the t-test or the Mann-Whitney test. A two-tailed value of p < 0.05 was considered significant. RESULTS: 540 individuals were included, median of age was 47 years and 74.6% were male. Median body mass index was 26.1 and 94.6% had low cardiovascular risk. There was a significant increase in the percentage of patients that met criteria for hyperglycemia (BL 4.8% and DL 8.5%, p < 0.001). We also observed significant (p < 0.001) increase in median (IQR) BL vs DL values in LDL-cholesterol [109 (90-128) vs 118 (97-139) mg/dL]; and triglycerides [120 (87-172) vs. 132 mg/dL (96-184)]. The proportion of patients with hyper-LDL cholesterolemia according to individual cardiovascular risk increased from 12.6 to 17.2% (p = 0.04). CONCLUSION: Our results suggest that quarantine, at least in its initial phases, may have a negative impact on the metabolic profile of this population.

RESUMO

Excess weight causes disorders in locomotor, cardiorespiratory and reproductive systems and increases the incidence of endocrinopathies, as well it can often cause dyslipidemias, leading to atherosclerosis. Aims: Report the evolution of homeopathic treatment in 4 overweight patients, being 2 female dogs and 2 female rabbits with hypertriglyceridemia, analyzing the values in biochemical test. Methodology:Homeopathic treatment was chosen, based on the principle of similitude, using Cholesterinum due to its action to decrease cholesterol and triglyceride levels. Results:The same protocol was made for all of the four patients, included 2 globules of Cholesterinum 30CH direct in its mouth, every 12 hours for 30 days. The first dog attended on 01/09/2019, and presented 328 mg/dL of triglycerides, decreasing this level to 132 mg/dL after just one-monthtreatment. The second dog attended on 04/05/2019, presented higher hypertriglyceridemia with 617 mg/dL that decreased to 259 mg/dL. Likewise, on 02/06/2019, the first rabbit attended, presented 445mg/dL of triglycerides, which were reduced to 337 mg/dL, while the second rabbit, on 06/27/2019, presented 372 mg/dL of triglycerides, decreasing to 274 mg/dL after. Although the values of cholesterol in all patients were in agreement with the reference, the treatment still proved improvements. In the beginning of the treatment, the first dog showed 207 mg/dL of cholesterol and in the end, it reduced to 170 mg/dL, as well with the second dog with 218 mg/dL in the beginning and 200 mg/dL after. Regarding rabbits, the first one presented an initialvalue of 60 mg/dL, which decreased to 52 mg/dL, while the second started with 57 mg/dL and went to 41 mg/dL. Conventionally, Bezafibrate is indicated as a lipid-lowering agent, but it is contraindicated in patients with liver or kidney failure, vesicular diseases, and for pregnant or lactating. Conclusion:Dyslipidemia can be controlled with High dilution. (The exposed information is consented by the tutors)

Contudo, esses testes laboratoriais estão sujeitos à interferência medicamentosa in vivo e in vitro.

The strict relationship between cardiovascular disease and dyslipidemia requires periodic monitoring of the lipid profile through serum measurements of total cholesterol, triglycerides, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-c) and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-c). However, these laboratory tests are subject to drug interference in vivo and in vitro. The purpose of this literature review was to make available the main drugs that can interfere with lipid profile assessment tests, with their respective in vivo or in vitro interference mechanisms. Some drugs can cause as adverse reaction the increase of LDL-c and triglycerides levels, or the reduction of HDL-c levels, which is associated with a greater risk of cardiovascular events. On the other hand, other drugs can reduce LDL-c and triglycerides levels, or increase HDL-c levels. Some medications can still interfere in vitro in the dosage of biomarkers to assess the lipid profile. The monitoring and diagnosis of dyslipidemia should take into account these drug interferences, since the misinterpretation of laboratory tests may result in unnecessary treatment or lack of pharmacological treatment, unnecessary expenses and damage to the patient's quality of life.

RESUMO

The aim of the study was to evaluate the effect of the volume of participation in exercise programs offered in Primary Health Care (PHC), for 24 weeks on blood biochemical parameters of adult women. Three Basic Health Units in Rio Claro City (São Paulo) were selected and 2 exercise inter-ventions were implemented with different volumes (3 weekly sessions, 90 minutes each; 2 weekly sessions, 60 minutes each). In total, 53 participants remained until the end of the interventions. Regardless of their number of absences, they were divided into 4 groups, according to the volume of participation (calculated individually according to the duration of sessions and the number of classes held), forming groups according to quartiles: Low Volume Group (LVG; 57.62 ± 9.97 years-old), Low Medium Volume Group (LMVG; 56.31 ± 12.18 years-old), High Medium Volume Group (HMVG; 53.00 ± 10.25 years-old), and High-Volume Group (HVG; 59.69 ± 7.66 years-old). Blood biochemical parameters were dosed using the ELISA method. The Generalized Estimation Equa-tion Model was used to compare the biochemical parameters (time, group, and interaction; p ≤ 0.05). The analysis showed significant and positive time effect for low-density lipoproteins (LDL) and glycemia in all groups and for total cholesterol (TC) in LVG, LMVG and HMVG; a significant group effect for HVG on TC (higher levels compared to all other groups) and LDL (higher levels compared to LVG and LMVG). It is concluded that the physical exercise programs offered in the PHC contributed to a significant reduction in LDL and blood glucose levels, regardless of the vol-ume of participation of individuals in the programs

Abstract Background: Vitiligo is an acquired and progressive mucocutaneous disease resulting from the loss of active epidermal melanocytes. Metabolic syndrome (MetS) affects about 25% of the world's population and is linked to inflammatory skin diseases including vitiligo. Fatty AcidBinding Protein 4 (FABP4) is an intracellular lipid chaperone. FABP4 is closely associated with MetS. Objectives: To evaluate the serum level of FABP4 in vitiligo patients and its relation to MetS in the investigated cases. Methods: This case control study was conducted on 45 patients having non segmental vitiligo and 45 matched controls. Their lipid profile, blood glucose and serum FABP4 levels were measured. Results: There were significant elevations in FABP4 (p < 0.001), cholesterol (p < 0.001), triglycerides (p = 0.005), and glucose (fasting [p = 0.001] and 2 hours post prandial [p < 0.001]) levels in patients in comparison with controls. MetS was significantly more prevalent among vitiligo patients (p < 0.001) and associated with high FABP4 serum levels (p = 0.037). In vitiligo patients, there were significant positive correlations between FABP4 serum levels and triglycerides (p = 0.047), cholesterol (p = 0.001) and LDL (p = 0.001) levels and negative correlation regarding HDL level (p = 0.009). FABP4 level was a significantly good diagnostic test for early detection of vitiligo (p < 0.001). Study limitations: The small number of studied subjects. Conclusions: FABP4 may play an active role in the disease process of vitiligo that could be mediated through associated dyslipidemia and hyperglycemia. FABP4 may be a marker of vitiligo helping in its early diagnosis, but it does not appear to be useful for determining vitiligo severity, activity or associated MetS.

RESUMO

Cardiovascular disease(CVD) remains the major cause of mortality in the world, typically claiming a third of all deaths. The primary cause of CVD is atherosclerosis. Therefore, timely prevention and therapy of atherosclerosis are able to reduce the risk of the development of its clinical manifestations. Anti-atherosclerotic activity of medicinal plants mainly appears in their multiple effects. This study was carried out to evaluate the hypolipidemic activity of virgin olive oil in experimentally induced hyperlipemic Wistar. A total of 24 rats were randomly allocated to 4 equal groups and treated as follows for 50 days: (1) Normal control (NC); that were fed with a standart diet; (2) High Cholesterol Diet Control (HCD); which received high cholesterol diet for 50 days; (3) Animals receiving high cholesterol diet for 50 days, after this period the animals are fed for eight days by the standard foodand receiving by gavage virgin olive oil (HCD+VOO) and(4) Animals fed for eight days with the standard food and receiving by gavage olive oil (VOO). High Cholesterol Diet containing yolk egg and coconut oil. Results showed that olive oil caused a significant (p < 0.01) reduction in serum levels of Total Cholesterol (TC), Triglycerides (TG), LowDensity Lipoprotein Cholesterol (LDL) and Atherogenic Index Serum (AIS). The results also demonstrated a significant (p < 0.01) increase in HighDensity Lipoprotein Cholesterol (HDL). Moreover, virgin olive oil induced a significant reduction in liver lipid content. On the other hand, a High cholesterol diet induced oxidative stress was measured by estimating reduced glutathione level and amount of thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS) formed as an index of lipid peroxidation in a liver and a heart. Virgin olive oil supplementation attenuated all these variations. Our observations of the study indicate that the virgin olive oil has a significant antihyperlipidemic potential.

The correct analysis in the interpretation of the results of any biological analyte is essential for the health of the patient and it is strongly linked to comparing those results with reference ranges that are in accordance with the population that is being analyzed on a daily basis. The objective of this study was to establish reference ranges in adults for glycemia, urea, creatinine, uric acid, total cholesterol and triglycerides in a clinical laboratory and compare the values obtained with those included in the inserts for the corresponding age group. Methodology. The population consisted of 561 apparently healthy adults of both sexes that attended Biomasterclin Laboratorio in Valencia, Venezuela, whose ages were 57.1±18.1 years. Results. The reference ranges obtained for glycemia were 63.0- 108.8 mg/dL, urea 17.7-54.9 mg/dL, creatinine 0.60-1.41 mg/dL, uric acid 0.89- 726 mg/dL, total cholesterol 78.5-251.1 mg/dL and triglycerides 39.5-176.0 mg/ dL. The reference ranges proposed by the commercial kits used for the determination of glycemia and creatinine could be transferred to the evaluated population, while the rest of the reference ranges could not. Conclusion. Due to the differences that occur between the reference ranges in commercial kits compared to those of the population of individuals who attend clinical laboratories, it is necessary to establish reference values in each clinical laboratory

Introduction: Central adiposity as a triggering factor for early insulin resistance is a potential threat of metabolic and cardiovascular risk in pregnancy. Objective: To determine the discriminating capacity of abdominal fat over insulin resistance, diagnosed by the triglyceride/glucose-BMI index at the end of the first trimester of pregnancy. Methods: An analytical and observational study was carried out with 526 pregnant women of singleton pregnancy and gestational age between twelve and thirteen weeks, between 2016 and 2020. The triglyceride/glucose-BMI test was studied, together with abdominal fats by ultrasound. ROC (receiver operating characteristic) curves were used to discriminate insulin resistance at the end of the first trimester of gestation, when abdominal fats increase. Results: Subcutaneous fat presented the highest area under the curve in the discrimination of insulin resistance, with an acceptable level of sensitivity and specificity. Conclusions: Subcutaneous fat, although with low discriminative value, can be considered as a harbinger of insulin resistance and gestational diabetes. Further study of abdominal fat is required, given the knowledge of its impact on metabolic disorders in late gestation(AU)

RESUMO

A series of N-(benzoylphenyl)-carboxamide derivatives (2a, 2b, 3a, 3b, 4a, 4b, 5a, 5b, 6a and 6b) was prepared with good yields by reacting the corresponding carbonyl chlorides with aminobenzophenones at room temperature. This was followed by evaluating the hypotriglyceridemic and hypocholesterolemic effects of 3b, 5a and 5b. Triton WR-1339 (300 mg/kg) was intraperitoneally administered to overnight-fasted rats to induce hyperlipidemia. Rats were divided into six groups: control, hyperlipidemic, hyperlipidemic plus compounds 3b, 5a and 5b and hyperlipidemic plus bezafibrate. Results showed that after 18 h of treatment at a dose of 15 mg/kg body weight of each of the test compounds, the elevated plasma levels of triglycerides (TG) and total cholesterol (TC) were significantly lowered by compounds 5b and 3b (p < 0.001) and by 5a (p < 0.0001), compared to the hyperlipidemic control group. Compounds 3b and 5a significantly increased levels of high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) by 58 and 71%, respectively. In addition, compounds 3b and 5a caused significant reduction (p < 0.0001) of low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) levels compared to the control group. These results suggest a promising potential for compounds 3b, 5a and 5b as lipid-lowering agents, which may contribute to reducing the risk of atherosclerosis and cardiovascular disease

RESUMO

ABSTRACT Objective This research was conducted as a prospective, self-controlled, eight-week clinical trial to investigate the effect of kefir consumption on the lipid profile of individuals with normal and dyslipidemic properties. Methods Kefir microorganisms given to volunteer subjects were determined using classical microbial count methods and qReal-Time Polymerase Chain Reaction. The study was carried out with 23 volunteer hospital health personnel between the ages of 20 and 55 who met the research criteria and did not have any health problems. The volunteers regularly consumed kefir on an empty stomach for four weeks. In the last stage, the eight-week study was completed by making blood and anthropometric measurements of the subjects, who continued to be studied without kefir consumption for four more weeks. Results Considering the changes in the serum lipid profiles of 13 individuals with dyslipidemic symptoms during the 4-week period they consumed kefir, Total Cholesterol values decreased by 9.15% compared to initial values, LDL-Cholesterol values decreased by 10.64%, HDL-Cholesterol values decreased by 6.9%, and triglyceride values decreased by 2.46%. The changes in the serum lipid profiles of 13 individuals with dyslipidemic findings at the end of an eight-week study were a 5.71% decrease in total cholesterol values (p<0.018) considered statistically significant, as well as a 5.31% decrease in LDL-Cholesterol values (p<0.021); the HDL-Cholesterol results were found to be significant with an 8.58% decrease in the values (p<0.035) and insignificant with a 17.21% increase in the triglyceride values (p<0.926). We concluded that regular kefir consumption was effective in both women and men in lowering total cholesterol and LDL-Cholesterol from blood lipid profiles, especially in individuals with dyslipidemic symptoms, while this effect was not observed in normal individuals. Conclusion Kefir can positively affect the total cholesterol and LDL-Cholesterol blood parameters of dyslipidemic individuals with high serum lipid values.

ABSTRACT Objective: Cardiovascular diseases represent the main cause of death in chronic kidney disease (CKD). We aimed to evaluate the prevalence and association of the hypertriglyceridemia-waist phenotype (HWP) and visceral adiposity index (VAI) with cardiometabolic risk factors (CR) in patients with CKD on hemodialysis (HD). Materials and methods: The study is based on a cross-sectional design with 265 HD patients in two cities in northeastern Brazil. The VAI was calculated considering the variables body mass index (BMI), waist circumference (WC), triglycerides (TG) and high density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-c). HWP was defined as the concomitant elevation of WC and TG. The Poisson Regression Model with robust variance estimation was adjusted considering a hierarchical approach for explanatory variables. Prevalence ratios (PR) were also estimated. The level of significance adopted was 5%. Results: In our study HWP and VAI prevalence's were 29.82% and 58.49%, respectively. In the final model, there was an association between VAI and female gender (PR = 1.46; p < 0.0001) and high body fat (% BF) (PR = 1.33; p < 0.0019). HWP was associated with females (PR = 1.80; p = 0.002), alcohol consumption (PR = 1.58; p = 0.033), obesity (PR = 1.89; p = 0.0001), high %BF (PR = 1.76; p = 0.012) and reduced HDL-c (PR = 1.48; p = 0.035).
