RESUMO

Powerful genetic and molecular tools available in mouse systems neuroscience research have enabled researchers to interrogate motor system function with unprecedented precision in head-fixed mice performing a variety of tasks. The small size of the mouse makes the measurement of motor output difficult, as the traditional method of electromyographic (EMG) recording of muscle activity was designed for larger animals like cats and primates. Pending commercially available EMG electrodes for mice, the current gold-standard method for recording muscle activity in mice is to make electrode sets in-house. This article describes a refinement of established procedures for hand fabrication of an electrode set, implantation of electrodes in the same surgery as headplate implantation, fixation of a connector on the headplate, and post-operative recovery care. Following recovery, millisecond-resolution EMG recordings can be obtained during head-fixed behavior for several weeks without noticeable changes in signal quality. These recordings enable precise measurement of forelimb muscle activity alongside in vivo neural recording and/or perturbation to probe mechanisms of motor control in mice.

In this study, we explored spatial-temporal dependencies and their impact on the tactile perception of moving objects. Building on previous research linking visual perception and human movement, we examined if an imputed motion mechanism operates within the tactile modality. We focused on how biological coherence between space and time, characteristic of human movement, influences tactile perception. An experiment was designed wherein participants were stimulated on their right palm with tactile patterns, either ambiguous (incongruent conditions) or non-ambiguous (congruent conditions) relative to a biological motion law (two-thirds power law) and asked to report perceived shape and associated confidence. Our findings reveal that introducing ambiguous tactile patterns (1) significantly diminishes tactile discrimination performance, implying motor features of shape recognition in vision are also observed in the tactile modality, and (2) undermines participants' response confidence, uncovering the accessibility degree of information determining the tactile percept's conscious representation. Analysis based on the Hierarchical Drift Diffusion Model unveiled the sensitivity of the evidence accumulation process to the stimulus's informational ambiguity and provides insight into tactile perception as predictive dynamics for reducing uncertainty. These discoveries deepen our understanding of tactile perception mechanisms and underscore the criticality of predictions in sensory information processing.

PURPOSE: The mainstay of treatment for nonmelanoma skin cancer (NMSC) on thin skin remains surgical, but procedures on older hands may be complicated by skin fragility and dermal atrophy. Used without cooling, 595 nm (nm) pulsed dye laser (PDL) has the capability of destroying NMSC through nonspecific thermal necrosis. The purpose of this study was to understand recurrence of NMSC on dorsal hands of older patients after one or two treatments using 595 nm PDL. METHODS: A retrospective chart review identified 147 cases of NMSC located on the dorsal hands treated with 595 nm PDL. Cases of basal cell carcinomas (BCCs) and squamous cell carcinomas (SCCs) were included. All patients received one to two treatments with PDL. The primary outcome was the recurrence of carcinoma. RESULTS: Among NMSC cases treated with PDL, recurrence occurred in 12 patients (8.2%). No cases of BCC recurred during the study period. Recurrence of SCC was 4.7% for SCC in situ and 10.4% recurrence for invasive SCC (p = 0.34). Among 71 patients treated once, recurrence occurred in 10 patients (14.1%), and among 76 cases treated twice, recurrence occurred in 2 patients (2.6%, p = 0.01). CONCLUSION: Two treatments of PDL for NMSC on the dorsal hands of older patients was well tolerated, had low recurrence, and seemed more effective than one treatment.

The present study investigated the difference in transmittance of light carrying opposite spin angular momentum (SAM) and orbital angular momentum (OAM) through chlorella algal fluid with varying concentrations and thicknesses. Our results indicate that, under specific conditions, right-handed light sources exhibit higher transmittance in the algal fluid compared to left-handed light sources. Furthermore, we observed that light with OAM also demonstrated higher transmittance than other types of light sources, leading to faster cell density growth of Chlorella. Interestingly, we also discovered that light with OAM stimulates Chlorella to synthesize more proteins. These findings provide different insights for selecting appropriate light sources for large-scale algae cultivation, and may facilitate the realization of carbon peaking and carbon neutrality in the future.

BACKGROUND: Non-tuberculous mycobacteria (NTM) are environmental organisms that are increasingly contributing to human infections. Mycobacterium immunogenum, a variant of NTM discovered in 2001, is a rapidly growing mycobacterium that exhibits multidrug resistance. Reports of infections caused by this organism, particularly tenosynovitis in the musculoskeletal system, are limited. CASE PRESENTATION: A 71-year-old female with vesicular pemphigus, undergoing immunosuppressive therapy, presented with a progressively enlarging tumour on the dorsum of her right hand, along with erythematous papules that extended across her right forearm. The specimens of skin tissues and blood cultures revealed the presence of M. immunogenum. Magnetic resonance imaging evaluation led to the diagnosis of pyogenic extensor tenosynovitis. A multidrug regimen, comprising amikacin and clarithromycin, was initiated, followed by synovectomy. The patient underwent a course of 180 days of antimicrobial therapy and demonstrated no signs of disease recurrence one year after treatment completion. CONCLUSION: Early diagnosis and surgical intervention are crucial to prevent the adverse prognostic implications of pyogenic extensor tenosynovitis caused by M. immunogenum. Effective management requires precise microbial identification and susceptibility testing, necessitating collaborative engagement with microbiological laboratories.

The design and control of artificial hands remains a challenge in engineering. Popular prostheses are bio-mechanically simple with restricted manipulation capabilities, as advanced devices are pricy or abandoned due to their difficult communication with the hand. For social robots, the interpretation of human intention is key for their integration in daily life. This can be achieved with machine learning (ML) algorithms, which are barely used for grasping posture recognition. This work proposes an ML approach to recognize nine hand postures, representing 90% of the activities of daily living in real time using an sEMG human-robot interface (HRI). Data from 20 subjects wearing a Myo armband (8 sEMG signals) were gathered from the NinaPro DS5 and from experimental tests with the YCB Object Set, and they were used jointly in the development of a simple multi-layer perceptron in MATLAB, with a global percentage success of 73% using only two features. GPU-based implementations were run to select the best architecture, with generalization capabilities, robustness-versus-electrode shift, low memory expense, and real-time performance. This architecture enables the implementation of grasping posture recognition in low-cost devices, aimed at the development of affordable functional prostheses and HRI for social robots.

Wearable sensors could be beneficial for the continuous quantification of upper limb motor symptoms in people with Parkinson's disease (PD). This work evaluates the use of two inertial measurement units combined with supervised machine learning models to classify and predict a subset of MDS-UPDRS III subitems in PD. We attached the two compact wearable sensors on the dorsal part of each hand of 33 people with PD and 12 controls. Each participant performed six clinical movement tasks in parallel with an assessment of the MDS-UPDRS III. Random forest (RF) models were trained on the sensor data and motor scores. An overall accuracy of 94% was achieved in classifying the movement tasks. When employed for classifying the motor scores, the averaged area under the receiver operating characteristic values ranged from 68% to 92%. Motor scores were additionally predicted using an RF regression model. In a comparative analysis, trained support vector machine models outperformed the RF models for specific tasks. Furthermore, our results surpass the literature in certain cases. The methods developed in this work serve as a base for future studies, where home-based assessments of pharmacological effects on motor function could complement regular clinical assessments.

Computer vision (CV)-based systems using cameras and recognition algorithms offer touchless, cost-effective, precise, and versatile hand tracking. These systems allow unrestricted, fluid, and natural movements without the constraints of wearable devices, gaining popularity in human-system interaction, virtual reality, and medical procedures. However, traditional CV-based systems, relying on stationary cameras, are not compatible with mobile applications and demand substantial computing power. To address these limitations, we propose a portable hand-tracking system utilizing the Leap Motion Controller 2 (LMC) mounted on the head and controlled by a single-board computer (SBC) powered by a compact power bank. The proposed system enhances portability, enabling users to interact freely with their surroundings. We present the system's design and conduct experimental tests to evaluate its robustness under variable lighting conditions, power consumption, CPU usage, temperature, and frame rate. This portable hand-tracking solution, which has minimal weight and runs independently of external power, proves suitable for mobile applications in daily life.

The aim of this work was to assess the accuracy, repeatability, and reproducibility of a hand-held, structured-light 3D scanner (EINScan Pro 2X Plus with High Definition Prime Pack, SHINING 3D Tech. Co., Ltd., Hangzhou, China), to support its potential use in multi-site settings on lower limb prosthetics. Four limb models with different shapes were fabricated and scanned with a metrological 3D scanner (EINScan Laser FreeScan 5X, SHINING 3D Tech. Co., Ltd., Hangzhou, China) by a professional operator (OP0). Limb models were then mailed to three sites where two operators (OP1, OP2) scanned them using their own structured-light 3D scanner (same model). OP1 scanned limb models twice (OP1-A, OP1-B). OP0, OP1-A, and OP2 scans were compared for accuracy, OP1-A and OP1-B for repeatability, and OP1-A and OP2 for reproducibility. Among all comparisons, the mean radial error was <0.25 mm, mean angular error was <4°, and root mean square error of the radial distance was <1 mm. Moreover, limits of agreement were <3.5% for perimeters and volumes. By comparing these results with respect to clinically-relevant thresholds and to the literature available on other 3D scanners, we conclude that the EINScan Pro 2X Plus 3D Scanner with High Definition Prime Pack has good accuracy, repeatability, and reproducibility, supporting its use in multi-site settings.

In the field of robotic hands, finger force coordination is usually achieved by complex mechanical structures and control systems. This study presents the design of a novel transmission system inspired from the physiological concept of force synergies, aiming to simplify the control of multifingered robotic hands. To this end, we collected human finger force data during six isometric grasping tasks, and force synergies (i.e. the synergy weightings and the corresponding activation coefficients) were extracted from the concatenated force data to explore their potential for force modulation. We then implemented two force synergies with a cable-driven transmission mechanism consisting of two spring-loaded sliders and five V-shaped bars. Specifically, we used fixed synergy weightings to determine the stiffness of the compression springs, and the displacements of sliders were determined by time-varying activation coefficients. The derived transmission system was then used to drive a five-finger robotic hand named SYN hand. We also designed a motion encoder to selectively activate desired fingers, making it possible for two motors to empower a variety of hand postures. Experiments on the prototype demonstrate successful grasp of a wide range of objects in everyday life, and the finger force distribution of SYN hand can approximate that of human hand during six typical tasks. To our best knowledge, this study shows the first attempt to mechanically implement force synergies for finger force modulation in a robotic hand. In comparison to state-of-the-art robotic hands with similar functionality, the proposed hand can distribute humanlike force ratios on the fingers by simple position control, rather than resorting to additional force sensors or complex control strategies. The outcome of this study may provide alternatives for the design of novel anthropomorphic robotic hands, and thus show application prospects in the field of hand prostheses and exoskeletons.

The modified total Sharp score (mTSS) is often used as an evaluation index for joint destruction caused by rheumatoid arthritis. In this study, special findings (ankylosis, subluxation, and dislocation) are detected to estimate the efficacy of mTSS by using deep neural networks (DNNs). The proposed method detects and classifies finger joint regions using an ensemble mechanism. This integrates multiple DNN detection models, specifically single shot multibox detectors, using different training data for each special finding. For the learning phase, we prepared a total of 260 hand X-ray images, in which proximal interphalangeal (PIP) and metacarpophalangeal (MP) joints were annotated with mTSS by skilled rheumatologists and radiologists. We evaluated our model using five-fold cross-validation. The proposed model produced a higher detection accuracy, recall, precision, specificity, F-value, and intersection over union than individual detection models for both ankylosis and subluxation detection, with a detection rate above 99.8% for the MP and PIP joint regions. Our future research will aim at the development of an automatic diagnosis system that uses the proposed mTSS model to estimate the erosion and joint space narrowing score.

INTRODUCTION: Vascular malformations (VMs) typically appear at birth and grow commensurately with patients. They can vary broadly in vessel type and tissue involvement, and upper extremity (UE) VMs can pose unique functional and aesthetic challenges in children. Given the advent of operative and nonoperative technologies like sclerotherapy and medications, a contemporary review of the surgical management of UE VMs is warranted. METHODS: We performed a retrospective review of all patients who had surgical management of VMs from 2010 to 2021 at The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia. Demographics, lesion characteristics, treatment (including preceding nonsurgical therapies), complications, and final outcomes were recorded. Operative notes were reviewed for date of operation, depth of excision, type of closure, and current procedural terminology code. RESULTS: Sixty-seven patients with 88 procedures were studied. Average patient age was 5.8 years, with 64% White and 67% male. Venous (34%) and lymphatic (19%) malformations were most common, and anatomic locations were most frequently on the hand (33%) and forearm (25%). The average lesion diameter was 4.2 cm, although this varied by location (eg, 2.9 cm, hand; 11.1 cm, chest wall). Fifty-eight patients (87%) underwent surgical excision as their index procedure, and 9 had sclerotherapy before surgery. Thirty-nine patients (60%) had subcutaneous excisions, and the remainder required subfascial or intramuscular excisions. Nearly all excisions were closed primarily (97%). Of the 53 patients with documented follow-up, 32 patients (60%) had complete resolution of their lesion as of their final visit. Thirty of these 32 patients with no clinical evidence of residual VM had only 1 surgery for excision. CONCLUSION: Upper extremity VMs were composed of diverse conditions with varying vessel types, size, depth, and anatomic sites. Surgical excision of VMs of the UE was safe and effective. A majority of VMs were fully excised after 1 procedure and frequently closed primarily with relatively low complication rates. Future work should investigate decision-making and outcomes of all treatment options of VMs of the UE for optimal functionality and aesthetics.

Top managers' past experiences (e.g., foreign experience) significantly impact their decision-making behavior, which may influence firms' sustainable development. The available literature, focusing on the role of the increase in the number of top executives with foreign experience in corporate social responsibility (CSR), yields mixed results. In order to clarify the ambiguous relationship between executive foreign experience and CSR, we empirically examine the effect of the geographic diversity of top executives' foreign experience on CSR. Based on a hand-collected dataset of the top management team's (TMT's) foreign experience, we demonstrate the positive impact of the geographic diversity of returnee executives' foreign experience on firms' CSR using Chinese A-share listed firms from 2009 to 2018. Moreover, this impact is stronger in firms with political connections with the central government and in regions with good market development. Furthermore, the mechanism analysis shows that returnee executives drive firms' CSR by promoting corporate donations and green innovation. This paper offers clear policy implications by suggesting that hiring returnees with a broad geographic scope of foreign experience as corporate executives is an efficient way to enhance firms' CSR.

The motor neuroscience literature suggests that the central nervous system may encode some motor commands in terms of velocity. In this work, we tackle the question: what consequences would velocity commands produce at the behavioral level? Considering the ubiquitous presence of noise in the neuromusculoskeletal system, we predict that velocity commands affected by stationary noise would produce "random walks", also known as Brownian processes, in position. Brownian motions are distinctively characterized by a linearly growing variance and a power spectral density that declines in inverse proportion to frequency. This work first shows that these Brownian processes are indeed observed in unbounded motion tasks e.g., rotating a crank. We further predict that such growing variance would still be present, but bounded, in tasks requiring a constant posture e.g., maintaining a static hand position or quietly standing. This hypothesis was also confirmed by experimental observations. A series of descriptive models are investigated to justify the observed behavior. Interestingly, one of the models capable of accounting for all the experimental results must feature forward-path velocity commands corrupted by stationary noise. The results of this work provide behavioral support for the hypothesis that humans plan the motion components of their actions in terms of velocity.

Complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS), characterized by severe and disproportionate pain, is a rare and debilitating condition. Due to its rarity, evidence-based treatment guidelines remain limited, creating a challenge for clinicians. We present the case of a 20-year-old female with CRPS type 1 of the right hand. Her pain, initially triggered by a minor trauma, had persisted for three months. The patient demonstrated severe pain, swelling, hyperesthesia, and restricted range of motion. Despite multiple hospital visits, her symptoms did not improve until she was diagnosed with CRPS and treated with oral prednisolone. A dosage of 40 mg daily led to a dramatic response within 10 days. Our report emphasizes the importance of recognizing CRPS and highlights the potential of prednisolone as a treatment option, particularly in resource-limited settings, where more specialized interventions may be unavailable. Further research is essential to establish a stronger evidence base for the use of steroids in CRPS management.

The spatial coding of tactile information is functionally essential for touch-based shape perception and motor control. However, the spatiotemporal dynamics of how tactile information is remapped from the somatotopic reference frame in the primary somatosensory cortex to the spatiotopic reference frame remains unclear. This study investigated how hand position in space or posture influences cortical somatosensory processing. Twenty-two healthy subjects received electrical stimulation to the right thumb (D1) or little finger (D5) in three position conditions: palm down on right side of the body (baseline), hand crossing the body midline (effect of position), and palm up (effect of posture). Somatosensory-evoked potentials (SEPs) were recorded using electroencephalography. One early-, two mid-, and two late-latency neurophysiological components were identified for both fingers: P50, P1, N125, P200, and N250. D1 and D5 showed different cortical activation patterns: compared with baseline, the crossing condition showed significant clustering at P1 for D1, and at P50 and N125 for D5; the change in posture showed a significant cluster at N125 for D5. Clusters predominated at centro-parietal electrodes. These results suggest that tactile remapping of fingers after electrical stimulation occurs around 100-125 ms in the parietal cortex.
