During a series of pathology surveys in four production complexes of a U.S. broiler integrator, the technical services veterinarians of an animal health company noted a high incidence of severe gizzard erosions and ulcerations (GEU), prompting further clinical investigation and a battery trial. No growth-promoting antibiotics or ionophore coccidiostats were used during the period of these surveys. All used tribasic copper chloride (TBCC) at ≤120 ppm added copper in broiler rations. Clostridium perfringens was isolated from 83% and 67% of gizzard lesions cultured in two complexes, and cecal C. perfringens most probable number determinations were higher in severely affected than in mildly affected or unaffected birds. Histopathology revealed both acellular koilin fusion defects characteristic of copper toxicity, as well as inflammatory cell infiltrates. Intralesional bacilli suggestive of C. perfringens were noted in 78% of affected flocks examined. Species E Aviadenovirus was isolated from one bird in one complex, and that bird had a single intranuclear inclusion body; no other flocks had Adenoviruses isolated or detected on PCR, nor any inclusion bodies. Other viruses detected were thought to be incidental. A pilot study using feed with supplemental copper from TBCC or copper sulfate and challenge with one of the isolated C. perfringens strains reproduced the lesions. A battery study was conducted with an unchallenged negative control group fed a diet with 16 ppm added copper, a group fed the control diet and orally challenged with 108 organisms of a field strain of C. perfringens at 21 and 22 days, and a group treated with the same diet containing 250 ppm added copper from TBCC and orally challenged with C. perfringens. Birds were necropsied at 23 and 28 days. All challenged groups developed lesions, with those receiving both TBCC and C. perfringens having significantly higher gross and histopathological lesion scores than the unchallenged negative controls. Lesions were qualitatively similar to those in the field and contained suspected C. perfringens bacilli. Because the levels of TBCC used in the commercial birds and in the battery trial generally have been considered safe, and because C. perfringens is usually regarded as a pathogen of the lower GI tract, the possible association of these two agents with GEU is a novel observation and warrants further investigation.

Gut morphology frequently reflects the food organisms digest. Gizzards are organs of the gut found in archosaurs and fishes that mechanically reduce food to aid digestion. Gizzards are thought to compensate for edentulism and/or provide an advantage when consuming small, tough food items (e.g., phytoplankton and algae). It is unknown how widespread gizzards are in fishes and how similar these structures are among different lineages. Here, we investigate the distribution of gizzards across bony fishes to (1) survey different fishes for gizzard presence, (2) compare the histological structure of gizzards in three species, (3) estimate how often gizzards have evolved in fishes, and (4) explore whether anatomical and ecological traits like edentulism and microphagy predict gizzard presence. According to our analyses, gizzards are rare across bony fishes, evolving only six times in a broad taxonomic sampling of 51 species, and gizzard presence is not clearly correlated with factors like gut length or dentition. We find that gizzard morphology varies among the lineages where one is present, both macroscopically (presence of a crop) and microscopically (varying tissue types). We conclude that gizzards likely aid in the mechanical reduction of food in fishes that have lost an oral dentition in their evolutionary past; however, the relative scarcity of gizzards suggests they are just one of many possible solutions for processing tough, nutrient-poor food items. Gizzards have long been present in the evolutionary history of fishes, can be found in a wide variety of marine and freshwater clades, and likely have been overlooked in many taxa.

The literature features limited evidence on the natural history of the cystic dilatation of the ventriculus terminalis (CDVT) and its response to treatment. The goal of this study is to ascertain which impact the revised operative classification of CDVT had on the management of patients diagnosed over the past 10 years.Ten new clinical articles presenting a total of 30 cases of CDVT were identified and included for qualitative analysis. Two take-home messages can be identified: (1) Adequate consideration should be given to designing national pathways for referral to tertiary centers with relevant expertise in the management of lesions of the conus medullaris, and (2) we suggest that type Ia should be, at least initially, treated conservatively, whereas we reckon that the signs and symptoms described in types Ib, II, and III seem to benefit, although in some patients only partially, from surgical decompression in the form of cystic fenestration, cyst-subarachnoid shunting, or both.While the level of evidence gathered in this systematic review remains low because the literature on CDVT consists only of retrospective studies based on single-center series (level of evidence 4 according to the Oxford Centre for Evidence-Based Medicine (OCEBM)), the strength of recommendation for adopting the revised operative classification of CDVT is moderate.

Growth performance, gizzard weight, ceca digesta short-chain fatty acids (SCFA), and apparent retention (AR) of components were investigated in broilers and turkeys in response to cereal grain type, fiber level, and multienzyme supplement (MES) fed from hatch to 28 d of life. 480-day-old male broiler chicks and equal number of turkeys were placed separately in metabolism cages (10 birds/cage) and allocated to 8 diets. The species-specific diets were a corn or wheat-based basal diet without (LF) or with 10% corn DDGS or wheat middlings (HF) and fed without or with MES. This effectively created a 2 (grain types) × 2 (fiber levels) × 2 (MES) factorial arrangement of treatments. The diets had TiO2 as an indigestible marker. Body weight, feed intake, and mortalities were recorded to calculate body weight gain (BWG) and feed conversion ratio (FCR). Excreta samples were collected on d 25 to 27 for AR, and all birds were necropsied for gizzard weight and ceca digesta on d 28. The interaction between grain and MES in broilers was such that wheat diets with MES had the lowest (P = 0.005) FCR. In broilers, LF diets had better (P = 0.010) FCR than HF diets. The wheat diets had the highest (P = 0.006) concentration of butyric acid in broilers. Broilers fed HF and corn diets had heavier gizzard than broilers-fed LF and wheat diets. The MES improved (P < 0.05) AMEn in HF, corn, and wheat diets in broilers. The turkeys fed wheat diets had the lowest (P = 0.019) FCR. Turkeys fed HF wheat diets had the heaviest (P < 0.001) gizzard. In turkeys, the MES improved AMEn in HF and LF corn diets, and only in LF wheat diets compared to respective controls. Treatments had no effect on turkeys cecal SCFA. In conclusion, grain type, fiber, and MES did not affect growth in both species. However, species exhibited differing FCR, gizzard, and energy utilization to fiber and MES.

The Illness Dose (ID) step of a Poultry Food Assess Risk Model (PFARM) for Salmonella and chicken gizzards (CGs) was shown in the present study. The illness dose is the minimum dose of Salmonella consumed that causes an illness. It depends on the zoonotic potential (ZP) of Salmonella, food consumption behavior (FCB), and consumer health and immunity (CHI) or the disease triangle (DT). Zoonotic potential is the ability of Salmonella to survive, grow, and spread in the production chain or food and then cause illness in humans. Illness dose is predicted in PFARM using a DT, dose-response model (DRM) that was developed with human feeding trial (HFT) data and was validated with human outbreak investigation (HOI) data for Salmonella. The ability of the DT, DRM to predict DR data from HOI and HFT for Salmonella was quantified using the Acceptable Prediction Zone (APZ) method where acceptable performance occurred when the proportion of residuals in the APZ (pAPZ) was ≥0.7. United States, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) data for human salmonellosis from 2007 to 2016 were used to simulate ZP, and only minor changes in ZP of 11 Salmonella serotypes were observed during this time. The performance of the DT, DRM for predicting Salmonella DR data from HFT and HOI was acceptable with pAPZ that ranged from 0.87 to 1 for individual serotypes of Salmonella. Simulation results from the DT, DRM in PFARM indicated that ID decreased (P ≤ 0.05) and ZP increased (P ≤ 0.05) over time in the simulated production chain because the main serotype of Salmonella changed from Kentucky (low ZP) to Infantis (high ZP) while FCB and CHI were held constant. These results indicated that the DT, DRM in PFARM can be used with confidence to predict ID as a function of ZP, FCB, and CHI. In other words, the DT, DRM in PFARM can be used with confidence to predict dose-response for Salmonella and CGs.

The Poultry Food Assess Risk Model (PFARM) project was initiated in 1995 to develop data collection and modeling methods for simulating the risk of salmonellosis from poultry food produced by individual production chains. In the present study, the Initial Contamination (IC) step of PFARM for Salmonella and chicken gizzards (CG) was conducted as a case study. Salmonella prevalence (Pr), number (N), and serotype/zoonotic potential (ZP) data (n = 100) for one sample size (56 g) of CG were collected at meal preparation (MP), and then Monte Carlo simulation (MCS) was used to obtain data for other sample sizes (112, 168, 224, 280 g). The PFARM was developed in Excel and was simulated with @Risk. Data were simulated using a moving window of 60 samples to determine how Salmonella Pr, N, and ZP changed over time in the production chain. The ability of Salmonella to survive, grow, and spread in the production chain and food, and then cause disease in humans was ZP, which was based on U. S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention data for salmonellosis. Of 100 CG samples tested, 35 were contaminated with Salmonella with N from 0 to 0.809 (median) to 2.788 log per 56 g. Salmonella serotype Pr per 56 g was 16% for Kentucky (ZPmode = 1.1), 9% for Infantis (ZPmode = 4.4), 6% for Enteritidis (ZPmode = 5.0), 3% for Typhimurium (ZPmode = 4.9), and 1% for Thompson (ZPmode = 3.7). Results from MCS indicated that Salmonella Pr, N, and ZP among portions of CG at MP changed (P ≤ 0.05) over time in the production chain. Notably, the main serotype changed from Kentucky (low ZP) to Infantis (high ZP). However, the pattern of change for Salmonella Pr, N, and ZP differed over time in the production chain and by the statistic used to characterize it. Thus, a performance standard (PS) based on Salmonella Pr, N, or ZP at testing or MP will likely not be a good indicator of poultry food safety or risk of salmonellosis.

BACKGROUND: Filar cysts are frequently found on neonatal ultrasound and are physiologically involuting structures with natural resolution. Hence, there has been no previous histologic correlation. Ventriculus terminalis is a focal central canal dilation in the conus medullaris and usually not clinically significant. Extra-axial cyst at the conus-filum junction connected to ventriculus terminalis is extremely rare, especially when associated with tethered lipomatous filum terminale and with progressive cyst enlargement. CASE PRESENTATION: A Caucasian female neonate with abnormal gluteal cleft had ventriculus terminalis cyst with an extra-axial cyst at the conus-filar junction and taut lipomatous filum on ultrasound examination and magnetic resonance imaging. This persisted at 6-month follow up imaging. In light of the nonresolving extra-axial mass and thick taut lipomatous filum, the child underwent L1-L3 osteoplastic laminectomies. The extra-axial cyst expanded after bony decompression and furthermore on dural opening; visualized on ultrasound. It communicated with the central canal and was documented with intraoperative photomicrographs. It was excised and filum sectioned. Histological immunostaining of the cyst wall showed neuroglial and axonal elements. The child did well without deficits at 4-year follow up with normal urodynamics. CONCLUSION: Progression dilation of ventriculus terminalis and extra-axial conofilar cyst with tethered lipomatous filum will likely progress to clinical significance and require surgical intervention. The embryologic basis for this pathology is discussed, with literature review.

Alteration of sphingolipid synthesis is a key event in fumonisins toxicity, but only limited data have been reported regarding the effects of fumonisins on the sphingolipidome. Recent studies in chickens found that the changes in sphingolipids in liver, kidney, lung, and brain differed greatly. This study aimed to determine the effects of fumonisins on sphingolipids in heart, gizzard, and breast muscle in chickens fed 20.8 mg FB1 + FB2/kg for 9 days. A significant increase in the sphinganine:sphingosine ratio due to an increase in sphinganine was observed in heart and gizzard. Dihydroceramides and ceramides increased in the hearts of chickens fed fumonisins, but decreased in the gizzard. The dihydrosphingomyelin, sphingomyelin, and glycosylceramide concentrations paralleled those of ceramides, although the effects were less pronounced. In the heart, sphingolipids with fatty acid chain lengths of 20 to 26 carbons were more affected than those with 14-16 carbons; this difference was not observed in the gizzard. Partial least squares-discriminant analysis on sphingolipids in the heart allowed chickens to be divided into two distinct groups according to their diet. The same was the case for the gizzard. Pearson coefficients of correlation among all the sphingolipids assayed revealed strong positive correlations in the hearts of chickens fed fumonisins compared to chickens fed a control diet, as well as compared to gizzard, irrespective of the diet fed. By contrast, no effect of fumonisins was observed on sphingolipids in breast muscle.

Improving feed efficiency is one of the main goals of chicken breeding and production. The function of the digestive system, where feed is digested and nutrients are absorbed, is closely related to feed efficiency. However, the association between feed efficiency and the development of different digestive organs in chickens remains unclear. Here, we investigated the individual feed efficiency of 207 broilers during the fast-growing period with an electronic feeder and examined the characteristics of 8 organs of their digestive system (the liver, bile, proventriculus, gizzard, duodenum, jejunum, ileum, and cecum) at market age. Both the feed conversion ratio (FCR) and residual feed intake (RFI) were significantly negatively correlated with the gizzard weight (GW) and significantly positively correlated with the relative weight of the liver (RLW). Additionally, we found an obvious negative relationship between the FCR and cecal length (CL). A two-tailed t test further confirmed these correlation analysis results. Specifically, compared to birds with the lowest feed efficiencies, the GW of broilers with the highest feed efficiencies (the lowest FCR or RFI) was 22.74% and 17.97% higher, respectively. The RLW of chickens with the highest feed efficiencies was 10.82 to 13.73% less than that of chickens with the lowest feed efficiencies. In addition, we found that increased CL (5.42-12.09%) was significantly associated with better feed efficiency. Thus, our study showed that the feed efficiency of broilers was related to the development of the gizzard, liver, and cecum. These findings provide new insight into the genetic and physiological regulation of feed efficiency in broilers.

The quality and protein digestibility of chicken gizzards influenced by ultrasound pretreatment and stir-frying time were investigated. The results indicated that with the extension of stir-frying time, the yield, springiness, tenderness and protein digestibility of samples significantly decreased (P < 0.05), while they increased after ultrasound pretreatment. When the stir-frying time was 5 min, the shear force of samples treated with ultrasound decreased by 25.4% and the protein digestibility increased by 65.3% and 34.7% compared with the non-ultrasound. Additionally, the samples stir-fried for 5 min after ultrasound pretreatment (U-5) had the highest overall acceptance score and best flavor. Hierarchical cluster analysis was applied to all the obtained data, which described the main characteristics of stir-frying chicken gizzard samples from different treatment groups. In conclusion, ultrasound pretreatment is an effective method to improve the quality and promote protein digestion of stir-frying chicken gizzards.

This study aims to examine the functional morphology of the proventriculus of the broad breasted white turkey (BBWT) (Meleagris gallopavo, Linnaeus 1758) using gross anatomy, light microscopy, gross/histomorphometric analysis, and scanning and transmission electron microscopy. The proventriculus was characterized internally by many elevated papillae with a mound, leafy flower, and lotus flower-shapes. Each papilla was enclosed by concentrically organized mucosal folds with distinct or indistinct proventricular gland openings on its top. Longitudinal folds and grooves at the junction of the proventriculus with the esophagus exhibited various sized and shaped openings of esophageal glands with irregular outlines. Histologically, the surface epithelium of the proventriculus was covered by a thin layer of cuticle, particularly evident at its junction with the gizzard. The lamina epithelialis and propria, and secretory units of proventricular lobules were infiltrated by aggregations of lymphocytes and lymphoid follicles (nodules). Variably shaped glandular lobules of proventricular glands occupied the submucosa, surrounded by thin strands of smooth muscle fibers derived from muscularis mucosa. Triangular, cuboidal, or columnar-shaped secretory oxyntico-peptic cells lined the secretory units. Many telocytes (pyramidal or fusiform-shaped cell bodies with lengthy telopodes) were observed in interstitial tissue. Further, two types of argyrophilic endocrine cells were identified within the glandular epithelium. The morphology of the M. gallopavo proventriculus reflects its dietary habits and behavior.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of ultrasound-assisted saucing on the quality of chicken gizzards. The results showed that with the prolonging of the saucing time, the yield, water holding capacity (WHC), lightness (L*), redness (a*) and springiness of chicken gizzards significantly decreased, while the shear force, hardness and chewiness significantly increased (P < 0.05). When the saucing time was the same, the yield, WHC, springiness and tenderness of the ultrasound group were significantly higher than those of the non-ultrasound group (P < 0.05). In particular, when the saucing time was 30 min, the yield, WHC and springiness of the ultrasound group increased by 2.13%, 0.97% and 10.53%, and the shear force decreased by 21.22% compared with those of the non-ultrasound group, respectively. Besides, ultrasound pretreatment increased the content of aromatic compounds, short-chain alkanes, alcohols, aldehydes and ketones, and the principal component analysis displayed that C-50 (saucing for 50 min without ultrasound pretreatment) and U-30 (saucing for 30 min with ultrasound pretreatment) were similar in flavor. Therefore, ultrasound pretreatment is a potential way to improve the quality of saucing chicken gizzards and shorten the processing time.

The present paper describes the investigation of the first outbreaks of adenoviral gizzard erosions (AGE) in Sweden, in five broiler flocks. The investigation included whole viral genome sequencing and investigation of genomic organization and sequence relationships with other adenoviruses. All five flocks had a history of decreased growth and uneven size of birds since 9-10 days of age. Macroscopically, lesions consistent with AGE (detached koilin layers, discolouration, bleeding, erosions) were identified in gizzards in all five flocks. In four flocks histology was performed, and degeneration and inflammation of the koilin layer and gizzard mucosa were identified in all four. In one flock, intranuclear inclusion bodies typical for fowl adenovirus (FAdV) were detected in trapped epithelial cells in the koilin layer. In four flocks in situ hybridization was performed, and cells positive for FAdV serotype 1 (FAdV-1) were demonstrated in the koilin layer and gizzard mucosa. FAdV species A (FAdV-A) was detected in gizzard, liver, caecal tonsils and bursa of Fabricius by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and sequencing. Ten out of ten examined parent flocks of the affected chickens were seropositive for FAdV, indicating former or on-going infection. However, FAdV was not detected in embryos from seropositive parent flocks and thus vertical transmission was not demonstrated. The entire nucleotide sequence of one sample was determined and found to be 43,856 base pairs (bp) in length. The genome sequence and organization were found to be similar to that of the reference apathogenic avian adenovirus "chicken embryo lethal orphan" (CELO). Adenoviral gizzard erosion is an emerging disease with negative impact on health and production of chickens. In this study, we compared in vitro and in vivo characteristics of a fowl adenovirus serotype 1 (FAdV-1), attenuated by 53 consecutive passages in primary chicken embryo liver (CEL) cell cultures (11/7127-AT), with the virulent strain (11/7127-VT). Whole genome analysis revealed near-complete sequence identity between the strains. However, a length polymorphism in a non-coding adenine repeat sequence (11/7127-AT: 11 instead of 9) immediately downstream of the hexon open reading frame was revealed. One-step growth kinetics showed delayed multiplication of 11/7127-AT together with significantly lower titers in cell culture (up to 4 log10 difference), indicating reduced replication efficiency in vitro. In vivo pathogenicity and immunogenicity were determined in day-old specific pathogen-free layer chicks inoculated orally with the respective viruses. In contrast to birds infected with 11/7127-VT, birds infected with 11/7127-AT did not exhibit body weight loss or severe pathological lesions in the gizzard. Virus detection rates, viral load in organs and virus excretion were significantly lower in birds inoculated with 11/7127-AT. Throughout the experimental period, these birds did not develop measurable neutralizing antibodies, prevalent in birds in response to 11/7127-VT infection. Differences in pathogenicity between the virulent FAdV-1 and the attenuated strain could not be correlated to prominently discriminate genomic features. We conclude that differential in vitro growth profiles indicate that attenuation is linked to modulation of viral replication during interaction of the virus with the host cells. Thus, hosts would be unable to prevent the rapid replication of virulent FAdV leading to severe tissue damage, a phenomenon broadly applicable to further FAdV serotypes, considering the substantial intra-serotype virulence differences of FAdVs and the variation of diseases.

The current investigation aimed to clarify the histomorphological features, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and histochemistry of the proventriculus in the adult hooded crow (Corvus cornix). Twenty-two adult birds of both sexes were collected from El-Fayoum and Beni-Suef governorates, Egypt; ten were used for anatomical investigation, two were scanned using SEM, and ten were subjected to routine histological technique. The obtained anatomical results revealed a small-sized spindle-shaped proventriculus obliquely located in the left ventral part of the body cavity with an average body weight, length and diameter of 1.689 ± 0.231 gm, 1.54 ± 0.383cm and 3.51 ± 0.416cm, respectively. The histological examination revealed a typical tubular organ. The mucosa exhibited several plicae and sulci that were lined with simple columnar cells. The lamina propria was composed of collagenous connective tissue infiltrated by lymphocytes, lymphatic aggregations and tubular glands. The submucosa consisted of collagenic fibres and compound tubuloalveolar glandular lobules lined with oxynticopeptic cells and enteroendocrine cells. The oxynticopeptic cells reacted negatively with PAS and Alcian Blue stains, whereas the ductal cells reacted positively with PAS only. Enteroendocrine cells were seen singly in the lamina epithelialis mucosae and were abundant in submucosal glands. The tunica musclaris was arranged in two layers covered by serosa. The proventricular glands' openings were noticed by SEM as raised tubes with regular circular outlines surrounded by anastomosed microscopic folds. The obtained histomorphological structure of the hooded crow's proventriculus revealed some shared morphological features with most species of birds and some variations that might be attributed to their diet and feeding behaviour.

The tenderizing effect of different ultrasound treatments on the characteristics of muscle fibers and connective tissue of chicken gizzard was investigated. It could be concluded that the shear force and muscle fiber diameter of the sample treated with ultrasound for 500 W/30 min were decreased by 27.1% and 26.2%, respectively, while the myofibril fragmentation index (MFI) was increased by 238.1% than the control. More importantly, the contents of hydroxylysine pyridinoline and lysine pyridinoline of the samples treated with ultrasound for 500 W/30 min were 23.1% and 40.5% lower than those of the control. Tenderizing effect of 500 W/30 min sample on thermal stability was verified from the decrease in transition temperature (Tmax) (10.7%) and enthalpy (ΔH) (21.7%) of collage compared with the control. In general, proper ultrasound treatment could effectively improve the tenderness of gizzard, and 500 W/30 min had the best tenderization effect. Therefore, the treatment of ultrasound was considered as a promising and efficient technique in meat processing, especially for the meat tenderization.

An Indian runner duck (Anas platyrhynchos domesticus) was presented for a second opinion after a linear, metallic foreign body was identified on radiographic images. The primary veterinarian performed diagnostic imaging while investigating the presenting complaint of the duck's left pelvic limb lameness. The images obtained from a computed tomography scan performed during the second-opinion visit revealed a linear, metallic foreign body with an associated migration tract originating from the ventriculus and terminating in the proximal left femur. Significant osteomyelitis was noted at the proximal left femur associated with the presence of the linear, metallic object. The foreign body and the adhesions associated with its migration were removed in 2, staged, surgical procedures. Although penetrating ventricular foreign bodies have been previously reported, migration through the cortex of a long bone is an unusual presentation. This case demonstrates that perforating, migrating, gastrointestinal foreign bodies can result in lameness refractory to analgesia and ancillary supportive care.

A flock of captive bobwhite quail (Colinus virginianus) experienced loose droppings, depression, and increased mortality starting at 3 wk of age. Necropsy of the affected birds revealed intestines dilated with frothy and tan fluid. Irregular dark brown fissures within the koilin layer of the gizzard were found in 20%-30% of the birds. Histologically, gizzards showed multifocal koilin degeneration or fragmentation, degeneration and necrosis of the subjacent epithelial cells, and infiltration of macrophages, lymphocytes, and heterophils. Necrotic epithelial cells occasionally contained large, smudgy, basophilic intranuclear inclusion bodies with marginated nuclear chromatin. Adenoviral paracrystalline arrays composed of icosahedral virions (60-70 nm diameter) were seen on transmission electron microscopy in the nuclei of epithelial cells in the gizzard mucosa. Adenovirus was isolated from gizzard, liver, intestine, and trachea by inoculation of specific-pathogen-free embryonated chicken eggs. Homogenates of the gizzard, liver, and intestine were positive for the adenovirus hexon gene by PCR. Sequencing of PCR amplicons confirmed the virus as fowl aviadenovirus A. The study isolates showed more than 99% and 97% nucleotide identity with quail bronchitis virus and with aviadenoviruses from gizzard erosion and ulceration (GEU) in broilers, respectively. The viral isolates showed six substitutions (G1T, C174A, A229G, C513A, T579A, and G621C) of which two were nonsynonymous (G1T and A229G), resulting in a change in the translated amino acid as A1S and S77G, respectively. These results indicate that adenoviruses of the same type or species can cause different clinical presentations in quails, e.g., bronchitis or GEU.

Una parvada de codornices de Virginia en cautiverio (Colinus virginianus) mostró heces acuosas, depresión y aumento de la mortalidad a partir de las tres semanas de edad. La necropsia de las aves afectadas reveló intestinos dilatados con líquido espumoso y marrón. Se encontraron fisuras irregulares de color marrón oscuro dentro de la capa de koilin de la molleja en el 20% al 30% de las aves. Histológicamente, las mollejas mostraron degeneración o fragmentación multifocal de la capa de koilin, degeneración y necrosis de las células epiteliales subyacentes e infiltración de macrófagos, linfocitos y heterófilos. La secuenciación de amplicones de PCR confirmó la presencia de Aviadenovirus A del pollo. Los aislamientos del estudio mostraron una identidad mayor del 99% y 97% en la secuencia de nucleótidos con el virus de la bronquitis de codorniz y con aviadenovirus asociado con erosión y ulceración de mollejas (con las siglas en inglés GEU) en pollos de engorde, respectivamente. Los aislados virales mostraron seis sustituciones (G1T, C174A, A229G, C513A, T579A y G621C) de las cuales dos eran no-sinónimas (G1T y A229G), lo que resultó en un cambio en el aminoácido traducido como A1S y S77G, respectivamente. Estos resultados indican que los adenovirus del mismo tipo o especie pueden causar diferentes presentaciones clínicas en codornices, por ejemplo, bronquitis o erosión y ulceración de mollejas.
