RESUMO

Desmicola ryukyuensis n. sp. (Nematoda: Oxyuridomorpha: Thelastomatidae) is described from the wood-feeding cockroach Panesthia angustipennis yayeyamensis Asahina, 1988 (Blattaria: Blaberidae) in Iriomote Island, Japan. The males of D. ryukyuensis n. sp. are similar to D. lamdongensis Sokolova, 2019 but differ by the length of the spicule and the extension of the lateral alae. The females of D. ryukyuensis n. sp. resemble those of D. ornata Jex, Schneider, Rose & Cribb, 2005, but can be differentiated by the shape of the sensilla in the interlabial space and the presence of lateral alae in D. ryukyuensis n. sp. that are absent in D. ornata. The females of D. ryukyuensis n. sp. are similar to D. lamdongensis. However, they differ in the morphology of the lips and the size of the eggs. The phylogeny of D. ryukyuensis n. sp. is inferred by the D2-D3 domains of the 28S rDNA. The new species forms a clade with another sequence of an unidentified Desmicola species from a Vietnamese wood-feeding cockroach.

Bess beetles (Passalidae) are known to maintain biological interactions with a diverse gut symbiotic community, which is far from being well described since these communities from most of the species of Passalidae have not been studied. In order to improve our knowledge of these communities, we describe a new species of Nematoda of the genus Hystrignathus (Hystrignathidae) associated with Passalus interruptus, a bess beetle species of the tribe Passalini collected in Hunuco, Peru, in the Peruvian Amazonia. Hystrignathus nunashae n. sp. is characterized by the presence of cuticular spines beginning just after the end of the first cephalic annule, a posterior cephalic ring dilated and longer than the anterior ring, as well as ornamented eggs. The new species has a didelphic-amphidelphic reproductive system, lateral alae extending from the posterior end of procorpus almost reaching the anus, and a short subulate tail. The external and internal morphological traits of the new species are described, and additionally, based on nuclear ribosomal DNA, we investigated the phylogenetic relationships of the new species.

A new species of thelastomatid Leidynema bestium sp. n. is described from the hind gut lumen of the cockroaches Diploptera punctata (Eschscholtz, 1922) and Elliptorhina chopardi (Lefeuvre, 1966). The new species is characterized by a combination of morphological features: presence of lateral alae in both sexes with posterior margin of alae in females not ending in the shape of a spike; longitudinal striation of the anteriormost annuli in males; four male genital papillae, equatorial position of vulva. In the cladogram inferred from analysis of D2-D3 segment of LSU rDNA L. bestium sp. n. demonstrates a position independent of the Leidynema species with known sequences of this taxonomic marker near the basal node for this genus.

RESUMO

Protrelleta floridana Chitwood, 1932 and Cranifera cranifera (Chitwood, 1932) (Oxyuridomorpha: Thelastomatoidea: Protrelloididae, Thelastomatidae) are recorded for the first time in Cuba. These nematodes were found to parasitize the cockroach Blaberus discoidalis Serville (Blattaria: Blaberidae), constituting a new host record for them. Both species are redescribed with the aid of scanning electron microscopy and the arrangement of the copulatory papillae of the males of P. floridana is amended. The present specimens coincide in their morphology and most of the measurements with the type populations from USA and the records from Costa Rica, with only minor differences. The molecular phylogeny was inferred by mean of the D2-D3 domain of the 28S rDNA and the Cuban P. floridana and C. cranifera form monophyletic clades with sequences of both taxa from Costa Rica as well as a sequence of C. cranifera from Russia. In the case of C. cranifera its phylogeny and that of its blaberid hosts reveal coevolutionary relationships.

Buzionema lutgardae n. sp. (Nematoda: Oxyuridomorpha: Thelastomatidae) is described from the cockroach Byrsotria sp. (Blattaria: Blaberidae), endemic to Cuba. Females of B. lutgardae n. sp. are shorter than those of B. validum Kloss, 1966 (16002150 µm vs. 31313378 µm), but the oesophagus is comparatively longer (b = 2.963.77 vs. 4.654.87). The lateral alae of the new species extend from ca. the midpoint of the cylindrical part of the procorpus to the level of the anus in contrast to the base of the basal bulb to the level of the anus in B. validum. The males of B. lutgardae n. sp. are shorter than those of B. validum (780940 µm vs. 11771423 µm) and their lateral alae end at some distance before the cloaca instead the level of the cloaca in B. validum. The phylogeny of B. lutgardae n. sp. is inferred by the D2-D3 domains of the 28S rDNA. B. lutgardae n. sp. and B. validum form a monophyletic clade with strong nodal support, as sister-group of the genus Leidynema Schwenck in Travassos, 1929.

García Coy (1994) described the hystrignathid nematode Longior alius García Coy, 1994 parasitizing the passalid beetle Antillanax pertyi (Kaup, 1869) from Guantánamo province, Eastern Cuba. Morffe García (2011) continued the studies on Cuban Longior and described L. longior Morffe García, 2011. Morffe et al. (2018) redescribed L. longior with the aid of SEM and molecular techniques. In their research the authors studied Longior individuals from the same host species and a locality close to the type locality of L. alius and compared their morphology, measurements and DNA markers with other material of L. longior. As a result of this analysis Morffe et al. (2018) concluded that L. alius and L. longior are conspecific and proposed L. alius as a synonym of L. longior.

Klossnema viguerasi n. sp. (Nematoda: Oxyuridomorpha: Hystrignathidae) is described from the passalid beetle Antillanax pertyi (Kaup, 1869), endemic to Cuba. The females of K. viguerasi n. sp. are morphologically similar but slightly longer than K. repentina Cordeiro Artigas, 1983 (1.143 mm vs. 1.000 mm). Both species differ in that K. viguerasi n. sp. has a longer procorpus (139 µm vs. 110 µm), isthmus (39 µm vs. 24 µm), and tail length (28 µm vs. 21 µm). The distance from the vulva to the anterior end is also longer in the new species (0.748 mm vs. 0.650 mm). The males of K. viguerasi n. sp. are larger than K. repentina (0.980 mm vs. 0.800 mm), but their isthmus is shorter (38 µm vs. 48 µm). New features of the cephalic end of both sexes, and copulatory papillae pattern of the males were observed by SEM and the generic diagnosis is emended in order to include such features. The phylogeny of K. viguerasi n. sp. is inferred by the analysis of the D2-D3 domains of the 28S rDNA and the 18S rDNA. This constitutes the first record of the genus Klossnema for the Cuban archipelago and the West Indies.

Twenty-two species of Lymaenon Walker (Hymenoptera: Mymaridae) from China are keyed; illustrations, taxonomic and other notes are also provided for some of these taxa. Six species are newly described: L. funiculus Aishan Hu sp. n., L. ledongus Aishan Hu sp. n., L. longitus Aishan Hu sp. n., L. naiquanlini Aishan Hu sp. n., L. radiculus Aishan Hu sp. n., and L. zhui Aishan Hu sp. n., all from the Oriental part of the country. Eleven species are newly recorded from China: L. bashai (Zeya), L. berijamus (Mani Saraswat), L. breviterebratus (Subba Rao), L. delhiensis Narayanan Subba Rao, L. katraps (Triapitsyn), L. kazak (Triapitsyn), L. krasavchik (Triapitsyn), L. longior (Soyka), L. narayani Subba Rao Kaur, L. sundus (Zeya Anwar), and L. tamilanus (Mani Saraswat).

A new thelastomatid species, Desmicola lamdongensis sp. n. from the hindgut of Panesthiinae cockroaches collected in Bi Doup-Nui Ba National Park, Vietnam is described and illustrated. Males of the new species are characterized by seven to eight modified ventrally projected cuticular annuli on the posterior third of body and the straight spicule with a pointed distal tip; females are distinguished by the presence of tiny circular protrusions on the lip surface, three setiform sensilla as interlabial formations, horseshoe-shaped amphids and smooth oval egg-shells. D. lamdongensis sp. n. differs from the rest of Desmicola species in having males with ventrally projected cuticular annuli on the posterior body third vs. semispherical ventral cuticular protuberance. Similarly to females of other species of the genus, females of D. lamdongensis sp. n. possess a seminal receptacle only on the posterior branch of the reproductive system that allows them to produce a mixture of fertilized and non-fertilized eggs among their progeny. A key to species of Desmicola based on females is given. Posterovulva danieli Spiridonov Ivanova, 1998 is regarded as D. danieli n. comb. in accordance with the latest revision of the genus (Adamson Van Waerebeke 1992).

Oxyurid nematodes parasitizing the mole cricket Neoscapteriscus vicinus were isolated in the framework of sampling fields of mole-crickets from the pampean region, in Argentina. In this work, molecular characterization of the 18S rRNA partial sequence of nematodes belonging to the families Thelastomatidae (Cameronia arecoensis Marchissio and Miralles 1987) and Travassosinematidae (Binema korsakowi Sergiev 1923 and Binema klossae, Marchissio and Miralles 1993) were carried out. This is the first world report of sequences belonging to B. klossae and C. arecoensis and first Argentinian report of B. korsakowi sequence. Also, morphological and morphometric features of B. klossae, B. korsakowi and C. arecoensis from Argentinian populations are reported.

Reptiles are becoming popular pets in many parts of the world. They are also known to harbor numerous gastrointestinal parasites. We used faecal smears to examine 748 stool samples from 14 different agamid lizard species. In addition, we used coproantigen ELISA tests (11 samples) and immunofluorescence assays (IFA) (19 samples) to detect reptile Cryptosporidium infections. In 28 cases, veterinarians requested therapy to treat oxyurid- and/or Isospora amphiboluri-infections and resent fecal samples after proposed therapy and anti-parasitic treatments had been applied. We also performed complete dissections of 24 deceased agamas in order to specify protozoan and helminth parasite infections. Overall, the examined fecal samples contained 6 different taxa. Oxyurids (Pharyngodonidae) were the most prevalent nematodes (41.2%), followed by I. amphiboluri (17.0%), Entamoeba spp. (0.8%), Choleoeimeria spp. (0.5%), Trichomonas spp. (0.3%), Cryptosporidium spp. (0.3%) and Strongyloides-like nematodes (0.1%). I. amphiboluri infections were significantly more prevalent (Chi-square test: χ2 = 21,5, df = 1, P < 0.001) in juvenile agamid lizards (31.9%) than in adults (14.2%). One of 11 (9.1%) coproantigen ELISA-examined samples was positive for Cryptosporidium. In 10.5% of the samples we found oocysts of Cryptosporidium. Thirteen (54.2%) of necropsied agamid lizards were infected with endoparasites and it is likely that three (12.5%) of them died due to severe parasitic infections. 74.0% of the samples that were submitted after therapy had been applied were negative. The high prevalences and pathological findings of several clinical parasitoses observed in these exotic reptiles calls for more detailed investigations on agamid gastrointestinal parasite fauna.

Coynema poeyi (Coy, García Álvarez, 1993) (Oxyuridomorpha: Hystrignathidae) is redescribed and illustrated with the aid of SEM. New features of the cephalic end of both sexes and copulatory papillae pattern of the males were observed and the generic diagnosis is emended in order to include such features. New locality records are given. The phylogenetic position of the species is inferred on the basis of the D2-D3 segment of the LSU rDNA. C. poeyi is located basal in a monophyletic clade formed by other hystrignathids: two species of Longior Travassos Kloss, 1958 and Hystrignathus sp.

Parasitism is a common symbiotic interaction across diverse natural systems. Using a comparative evolutionary approach, we investigated the contributions of both host phylogeny and abiotic factors toward diversification of phylogenetically independent endoparasites that inhabit essentially the same physical space. We tested for host-parasite and parasite-parasite phylogenetic concordance in western North American chipmunks (Rodentia: Sciuridae) and two distantly related species of pinworms (Nematoda: Oxyurida). Deep structure in molecular phylogenies revealed signals of host-associated divergence in both parasite species, while shallower phylogeographic structure varied between the two parasites. This suggests that although these parasites experienced similar landscapes and cyclic climate processes, temporally distinctive diversification events were associated with differences in the initiation of their association with host lineages. When climate cycles initiate diversification, partially congruent, but asynchronous, host-associated parasite phylogenies may emerge.

Thelastoma vanwaerebekei n. sp. was extracted from the hindgut of Gymnetis litigiosa. The new species is included in the group of species with females having the excretory pore at the same level as the pharyngeal basal bulb (or slightly anteriorly), long tail length (approximately 30% of total body length) and males without spicules. Females of T. vanwaerebekei n. sp. differ from those of T. madecassum in tail shape (filiform and conical, respectively). They differ from T. basiri, T. imphalensis and T. dessetae in the morphology of the anterior region. In females, pharyngeal length is shorter than in T. depressum. In males, T. vanwaerebekei n. sp. differs from T. blabericola in the tail length, and from T. raoi in the number of caudal papillae. The partial 18S SSU and 28S LSU rRNA gene regions were amplified.

The status of Longior alius García Coy, 1994 (Nematoda: Thelastomatoidea: Hystrignathidae) is discussed on the basis of new material obtained from its type host Antillanax pertyi (Kaup, 1869) (Coleoptera: Passalidae) from Limonar, Guantánamo province, Cuba, near the type locality. Based on morphological and molecular studies L. alius is considered synonymous with L. longior Morffe García, 2011. L. longior and L. similis Morffe, García Ventosa, 2009 are redescribed and illustrated with the aid of SEM. New locality records for both species are given. The conspecificity of females and males of both species is supported by comparison of the D2-D3 segment of the 28S LSU rDNA. The inter-specific differences and phylogenetic position of L. longior and L. similis are discussed.

The popularity of Mongolian gerbils (Meriones unguiculatus) as pets as well as experimental animals is continuously increasing. Mongolian gerbils are the main natural hosts of the nematode Dentostomella translucida, also referred to as pinworm, threadworm, or seatworm. D. translucida (Oxyuridae) was recently detected in the necropsy of a gerbil housed at the experimental animal production center of Adnan Menderes University Faculty of Veterinary Medicine. Mongolian gerbils are the main natural hosts of D. translucida, also referred to as pinworm. During necropsy in this animal, 26 parasites were collected from the small intestine and microscopically examined. The length of the female and male parasites was determined as 15.6-25.4 (mean, 18.3) and 10.2-16.8 (mean, 13.3) mm, respectively. The mean esophageal length in the female and male parasites was 397.3 and 325.3 mµ, respectively. The vulva of the females was close to the front end and was approximately 8.7 mm in length. The males had a single spiculum of approximately 342 mµ in length. There were seven papillae around the cloaca. During postmortem examination, eggs were also detected in feces collected from the gerbil's rectum. The eggs were spindle-shaped, slightly asymmetric, and had a diameter of 117-128 × 45-49 mµ (mean, 120 × 48 mµ). D. translucida, which is a parasite specific to gerbils, may easily affect other members of the animal colony. Thus, controling its presence in gerbil breeding units is essential.

RESUMO

This study reports on infection by Trypanoxyuris (Trypanoxyuris) minutus among Alouatta guariba clamitans through biometry on adults and eggs. A total of 58 adult helminths were recovered from the small segment of the animal's large intestine. This study is the first report of this parasite among A. guariba clamitans in Rio de Janeiro.

Two new species of thelastomatid nematodes parasitic in the hindgut of cockroaches are described. Hammerschmidtiella keeneyi n. sp. is described from a laboratory colony of Diploptera punctata (Eschscholtz, 1822) from a facility in Ohio, U. S. A. This species is characterized by having females with a short tail and males smaller than those described from other species. The new species also differs from others in the genus by a number of differing measurements that indicate a distinct identity, including esophageal, tail, and egg lengths as well as the relative position of the excretory pore. Blattophila peregrinata n. sp. is described from Periplaneta australasiae (Fabricius, 1775) and Pycnoscelus surinamensis (Linnaeus, 1758) in a greenhouse from Ohio, U.S.A. and from wild P. surinamensis in southern Florida, U.S.A. This species differs from others in the genus by having a posteriorly directed vagina, vulva in the anterior third of the body, no lateral alae in females, and eggs with an operculum. In P. surinamensis from southern Florida, an additional species, Severianoia annamensis Van Luc & Spiridonov, 1993 was found and did not co-parasitize the host with B. peregrinata n. sp. Blattophila peregrinata n. sp. and S. annamensis also occur in the Galápagos Islands, Ecuador, indicating that these have a widespread global range.

Cockroaches are parasitized by thelastomatid nematodes, which live in an obligate manner in their hindgut and interact with the resident microbial community. In the present study, a composition analysis was performed on the gut microbiome of Periplaneta fuliginosa and P. americana to investigate natural and artificial infection by thelastomatid nematodes. Nine libraries of the 16S rRNA gene V3-V4 region were prepared for pyrosequencing. We examined the complete gut microbiome (fore-, mid-, and hindgut) of lab-reared P. fuliginosa naturally infected with the parasitic nematode Leidynema appendiculatum and those that were nematode-free, and complemented our study by characterizing the hindgut microbial communities of lab-reared P. americana naturally infected with Hammerschmidtiella diesingi and Thelastoma bulhoesi, artificially infected with L. appendiculatum, and those that were nematode-free. Our results revealed that the fore- and midgut of naturally infected and nematode-free P. fuliginosa have close microbial communities, which is in contrast with hindgut communities; the hindgut communities of both cockroaches exhibit higher microbial diversities in the presence of their natural parasites and marked differences were observed in the abundance of the most representative taxa, namely Firmicutes, Proteobacteria, and Bacteroidetes. Our results have provided basic information and encourage further studies on multitrophic interactions in the cockroach gut as well as the thelastomatid nematodes that play a role in this environment.

The American cockroach Periplaneta americana (Linnaeus, 1758) (Blattodea: Blattidae) has been spreading worldwide by commerce and has successfully adjusted to living with humans. There are many reports of thelastomatid parasitic nematode isolated from P. americana in many countries including USA, Canada, India, Argentina, Bulgaria, but not in Japan. We have investigated the parasitic nematodes in P. americana lab strain and field-captured individuals in Japan and found that Thelastoma bulhoesi (de Magalhães, 1900) (Oxyuridomorpha: Thelastomatidae) parasitizes with high infection rates. We described morphological, molecular, and developmental characters of the parasitic nematode because such information was missing despite it has been discovered more than one hundred years ago. We described morphometrics with DIC microscopy and fine structure of male and female adult with SEM observation. We also reveal the embryonic and postembryonic development of this nematode. This is the first report of a thelastomatid nematode isolated from American cockroach in Japan, and the data showed here is also very useful and fundamental for further analysis of the cockroach and parasite relations.
