Setaria tundra is a filarioid parasite occurring in the northern hemisphere. Adult forms of helminths are located free in the peritoneal cavity of its definitive host - cervids, while microfilariae are presented in the host's bloodstream. Intermediate hosts are represented by several mosquito species, mainly of the genus Aedes.Nematode S. tundra is well adapted to roe deer (Capreolus capreolus) and therefore is the infection usually asymptomatic. In this study we present the first report of S. tundra in Slovakia. During a period 2022 a total of 6 roe deer coming from eastern Slovakia (Trebisov district) were examined. Nematodes were found during the evisceration process in the abdominal cavity of 3 specimens Intensity of infection was in range from 5 to 38 helminths per host. Mean intensity of infection reached 18.3 parasites per host. The helminths were identified as S. tundra by morphological examination and molecular typing of the COI gene. This study is the first report of S. tundra in Slovakia.

Setaria marshalli is a mosquito-borne filarial nematode that causes infection in calves younger than two years old. In the present study, nematodes were obtained from a calf in Japan and morphologically identified as S. marshalli. Additionally, the partial cytochrome oxidase subunit I (COI) region (596 bp) was analyzed for the first time to establish a reliable DNA barcode. Nucleotide sequences of COI were identical among the seven worms obtained. The COI region can be a useful marker for species discrimination in the case of S. marshalli since nucleotide variations observed between the closest congener, Setaria cervi (51/596 bp), were sufficient to allow species discrimination. However, the phylogenetic relationship of S. marshalli with its congeners was unclear in a maximum likelihood tree. We found that the partial COI sequence of S. marshalli analyzed in the present study matched a relevant section of the complete mitochondrial genome of S. labiatopapillosa that was deposited in the International Nucleotide Sequence Database. This finding suggests that S. marshalli was misdiagnosed as S. labiatopapillosa in a previous study. It is crucial to conduct accurate morphological analyses to obtain reliable molecular information regarding Setaria nematodes.


Title: Première caractérisation génétique de Setaria marshalli (Nematoda, Spirurida) avec un code-barres ADN fiable basé sur un marqueur génétique mitochondrial. Abstract: Setaria marshalli est une filaire transmise par les moustiques qui provoque une infection chez les veaux de moins de deux ans. Dans la présente étude, les nématodes ont été obtenus à partir d'un veau au Japon et identifiés morphologiquement comme S. marshalli. De plus, la région partielle de la sous-unité I (COI) de la cytochrome oxydase (596 pb) a été analysée pour la première fois afin d'établir un code-barres ADN fiable. Les séquences nucléotidiques de COI étaient identiques parmi les sept vers obtenus. La région COI peut être un marqueur utile pour la discrimination des espèces dans le cas de S. marshalli puisque les variations de nucléotides observées avec le congénère le plus proche, Setaria cervi (51/596 pb) étaient suffisantes pour permettre la discrimination des espèces. Cependant, la relation phylogénétique de S. marshalli avec ses congénères n'était pas claire dans un arbre à maximum de vraisemblance. Nous avons constaté que la séquence COI partielle de S. marshalli analysée dans la présente étude correspondait à une section pertinente du génome mitochondrial complet de S. labiatopapillosa qui a été déposée dans la base de données internationale de séquences de nucléotides. Cette découverte suggère que S. marshalli a été diagnostiqué à tort comme S. labiatopapillosa dans une étude précédente. Il est crucial de mener des analyses morphologiques précises pour obtenir des informations moléculaires fiables concernant les nématodes du genre Setaria.

Lymphatic filariasis caused by filarial nematode is an important disease leading to considerable morbidity throughout tropical countries. Even after specific elimination programs, the disease continue to spread in endemic countries. Thus newer therapeutic interventions are urgently needed to control the spread. In the present study, we have seen the effect of andrographolide (andro), a diterpenoid lactone from the leaves of Andrographis paniculata on filarial parasite Setaria cervi. There was time and concentration dependent decrease in motility and viability leading to death of parasite after 6 h of the exposure of andro. Andro showed potential antifilarial activity with an IC50 value of 24.80 µM assessed through MTT assay. There was concentration dependent decrease in the antioxidant enzymes activity and increase in proapoptotic markers after 5 h exposure of andro. Further, molecular docking analysis revealed that andro binds with filarial glutathione-S-transferase at glutathione (GSH) binding site and inhibiting enzyme activity competitively. Andro induced oxidative stress mediated apoptosis in parasites as evidenced by increase in the intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS) and apoptotic markers.Therefore this study suggested that andro could be further explored as a new antifilarial drug.

Effective macrofilaricidal drugs are not commercially available, and in an endeavour to find out new macrofilaricidal agents, in this research work, thiosemicarbazone derivatives have been prepared and tested against adult Setaria digitata, a cattle filarial parasite, as a model nematode for the filarial parasite, Wuchereria bancrofti. Lipinski and Veber rules have been used to design these molecules and found out that all the designed molecules show drug-like molecular properties. The in vitro anti-filarial potential of thiosemicarbazones against S. digitata was carried out using worm motility and 3-[4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl]-2,5-diphenyl tetrazolium bromide (MTT) reduction colorimetric assays at 100 µg/ml concentration for the incubation period of 24 h. The standard drugs used at present for filaria, Albendazole, Ivermectin and Diethylcarbamazine were not able to kill the adult filarial worms effectively. In contrast, phenyl thiosemicarbazones with trifluoromethyl substitution at 3rd and 4th positions, 2-pyrrolyl, and isatinyl made the adult worms immotile and also showed 69%-83% inhibition in formazan formation an indicator of non viability.

Host-parasite interaction has always been an area of interest to the parasite biologists. The complex immune interactions between the parasite and/or the parasite-derived products with the host immune cells determine the fate of the disease biology. Parasitic organisms are widely equipped with a vast array of protective machineries including antioxidant enzymes to withstand the hostile condition inside the host body. The reactive oxygen species (ROS) generated inside the host as a result of parasitic intervention can be endured by the parasite by their own tools to ensure their survival. One such antioxidant enzyme in the filarial parasite that plays a significant role in redox homeostasis, survivability and disease progression is the thioredoxin reductase (TrxR). Herein, we have projected a crude lysate of the bovine filarial parasite Setaria cervi enriched with high TrxR enzyme activity has the capacity to downregulate lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced inflammatory macrophages. TrxR-mediated inhibition of the TLR4-NF-κB axis resulting into downregulation of the pro-inflammatory cytokines with concomitant upregulation of the anti-inflammatory cytokines supports the filarial parasite to produce an anti-inflammatory milieu which ultimately promotes worm survivability inside the host and pathogenesis.

INTRODUCTION: Setaria tundra is known as a common parasite of sylvatic ungulates in Northern latitudes. Although mostly considered of low pathogenicity, severe disease outbreaks and remarkable economic losses have been observed in reindeer (Rangifer tarandus tarandus). Host density and climatic factors are major drivers of the expansion of Setaria spp. facilitating their development and spread. Five adult specimens of S. tundra were retrieved from a male roe deer in Bavaria, Germany. Deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) barcoding confirmed morphological identification. Cyclooxygenase 1 gene sequences showed 98,73-99,68 % similarity to sequences of other S. tundra specimens found in deer (Cervidae) and mosquitoes (Culicidae). The results raise awareness for the presence of S. tundra in a hitherto unkown endemic region and represent a starting point for broader investigations to understand the biology and distribution of this parasite in roe deer as well as other potential definitive hosts.


INTRODUCTION: Setaria toundra est connu comme un parasite commun des ongulés sylvatiques aux latitudes septentrionales. Bien que généralement considéré comme faiblement pathogène, de graves épidémies et des pertes économiques significatives ont été observées chez le renne (Rangifer tarandus tarandus). La densité d'hôtes et les facteurs climatiques sont les principaux moteurs de l'expansion de Setaria spp., facilitant leur développement et leur diffusion. Cinq spécimens adultes de S. toundra ont été récupérés sur un chevreuil mâle en Bavière, en Allemagne. Le séquençage de l'acide désoxyribonucléique (ADN) a confirmé l'identification morphologique. Les séquences du gène de la cyclooxygénase 1 ont montré une similarité de 98,73 à 99,68 % avec les séquences d'autres spécimens de S. toundra trouvés chez les cerfs (Cervidae) et les moustiques (Culicidae). Les résultats sensibilisent à la présence de S. toundra dans une région endémique jusqu'alors inconnue et représentent un point de départ pour des investigations plus larges pour comprendre la biologie et la distribution de ce parasite chez le chevreuil ainsi que d'autres hôtes définitifs potentiels.

GRP94, a member of HSP90 family, is involved in folding and degradation of endoplasmic reticulum proteins. The proteome analysis of Setaria cervi, a bovine filarial parasite showed that a 91 kDa protein was over expressed, after the parasites were maintained in glucose deprived medium. The MALDI- LC/MS analysis of the 91 kDa band confirmed it as endoplasmin precursor (GRP94). Amino acid sequence alignment of S.cervi GRP94 exhibited maximum similarity with human filarial parasite Wuchereria bancrofti, Brugia malayi and Loa loa GRP94. Tunicamycin treatment of S. cervi worms revealed that the expression of GRP94 is associated with ER stress. Transcription of S. cervi grp94 as well as igf is regulated by transcription factors ATF-6 and XBP-1S which was confirmed by Real Time PCR. Moreover, marked alteration in the expression of igf after 3 h and 6 h of drug treatment suggested propagation of survival pathway under ER stress. The activities of ER stress markers protein disulphide isomerase and glycosyltransferase were significantly reduced after 6 h of tunicamycin treatment. The present findings thus indicate that the expression of GRP94 and regulation of its expression is under ER stress in Setaria cervi. To our knowledge this is the first report of identification of GRP94, in any filarial parasite till date.

Lymphatic filariasis and its associated health hazards have taken enormous tolls especially in the tropical and sub-tropical countries round the globe. Our present work contemplates the immunomodulatory role of filarial Thioredoxin reductase (TrxR) for the survival of the parasite inside the human host. For this, the protein TrxR was purified from the filarial parasite Setaria cervi and further substantiated through specific anti-TrxR antibody raised in mice. Both commercially available anti-TrxR antibody and laboratory raised antibody produced a single band with a molecular mass of ~80 kDa on western blot. The protein is optimally active at pH 7.0 and at temperature 37 °C. This protein contains both alpha helix and beta pleated sheet with selenocysteine at its active site. The Km was found to be 2.75 ± 0.49 mM. TrxR was found to downregulate lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced inflammation in macrophages due to inhibition of TLR4-NF-κB pathway. The result was further supported by the downregulation of inflammasome pathway and activation of alternatively activated macrophages upon TrxR treatment. Hence this study projects insights into the importance of filarial TrxR in host-parasite interface as well as it illustrates novel therapeutic strategy towards anti-filarial drug development.

RESUMO

Over the past years, the nematode species from the Onchocercidae family, Setaria tundra, has expanded its range by thousands of kilometres from subpolar to subtropical climate zone. Its presence has been confirmed in seven new countries. The appearance of this parasite in many other European countries, especially central and southern ones, is highly probable. In recent years, its mass appearance has led to the numerous fall of reindeer in Fennoscandia, thus causing significant economic damage. There is also a growing risk of its gradation in Central Europe, which threatens overpopulated wild deer species and possibly farm animals, however there is no information if other than mosquitoes blood-sucking arthropods act as its vector. This paper covers the range of occurrence of S. tundra in Europe, all of the reported intermediate and definitive hosts, phylogeny, biology, morphology, health effects, and treatment methods.

A series of novel piperine derivatives were synthesized with high yield and were evaluated for its antifilarial potential against the bovine filarial parasite Setaria cervi. Among 21 (3a-3u) compounds screened, three of them (3k, 3l, 3s) showed significant potential against all the developmental stages (oocytes, microfilariae and adult) of the filarial worm in time and dose dependent manner. 3l showed the highest efficacy among the selected three compounds. These three compounds were further evaluated for both in vitro and in vivo toxicity analyses which further fortified the benign nature of the selected compounds. The antifilarial activities they exhibited were clearly fuelled through disparity of the internal redox homeostasis as evidenced from the alterations in the enzymatic and non-enzymatic antioxidants level which ultimately shifted towards activation of pro-apoptotic signaling cascade eventually leading to the death of the parasites. The ability of the compound 3l to bind thioredoxin reductase and CED-3 protein are the key findings of this study. The present study supported with several biological experiments is therefore a maiden report on the antifilarial effectiveness of these novel piperine derivatives.

This study was performed to examine and clarify the cause of hindlimb ataxia and neuropathy seen in the South Korean horse population. Fifty horses diagnosed with hindlimb ataxia and neuropathy were referred for this study. Neurological examination was performed on 47 horses while necropsy was performed in all 50 animals. The occurrence of neurological diseases increased rapidly in the summer and 47 out of 50 horses were referred after the end of July. The incidence of neurological diseases started from the southern part of Korea in July and proceeded northward in August and September. Although there was no correlation with age, Thoroughbred and Warmblood horses showed a higher incidence rate than Halla and Jeju horses. The incidence rate was 5 times higher in geldings than in mares and stallions. Of the 20 cases, 16 were diagnosed with eosinophilic meningoencephalomyelitis in 2015. The most common lesions observed in 2016 were parasitic meningoencephalomyelitis (10 cases, 33%) and eosinophilic meningomyelitis (7 cases, 23%). Histopathological analysis of the brain and spinal cord revealed nematodes of approximately 100-200 µm in diameter, microcavitation and infiltrates of eosinophils, and brown pigmented macrophage infiltrates. The nematodes were identified as Setaria digitata via DNA sequencing, performed subsequent to polymerase chain reaction using DNA isolated from formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded tissue sections of the spinal cord. These results show that aberrant migration of Setaria digitata larva in the brain and spinal cord was a major cause for neurological signs in horses.

Inhibition of an imperative antioxidant enzyme with subsequent death is a victorious and widely accepted strategy to combat various infectious diseases. Among different antioxidant enzymes, thioredoxin reductase (TrxR) is an exclusive one. Studies have revealed that direct inhibition of TrxR by different classes of chemical moieties promptly results in the death of an organism. Especially the structural as well as biochemical modifications of the enzyme upon inhibition project serious threat towards the subject organism. Herein, an attempt was made to inhibit TrxR of filarial species by administering Auranofin, 1 chloro 2,4 dinitrobenzene (CDNB), Curcumin, and a novel carbamo dithioperoxo(thioate) derivative (4a). Our study has revealed that inhibition of TrxR resulted in the induction of the classical CED pathway of apoptosis along with the intrinsic and extrinsic pathways of apoptosis (Caspase mediated) routed through the ASK-1/p38 axis. Druggability analysis of filarial TrxR for the selected compounds was performed in silico through molecular docking studies. Therefore, this study attempts to decipher the mechanism of apoptosis induction following TrxR inhibition. The safety of those four compounds in terms of dose and toxicity was taken under consideration. Thitherto, the mechanism of TrxR mediated initiation of cell death in filarial parasite has remained undercover, and therefore, it is a maiden report on the characterization of apoptosis induction upon TrxR inhibition which will eventually help in generating effective antifilarial drugs in the future.

This work introduces new morphological and molecular information on the filaroid nematode Setaria cervi (Rudolphi, 1819) obtained from 13 infected game ungulates out of 96 dissected. The hosts comprised the following: a single moose (Alces alces), ten red deer (Cervus elaphus) and two sika deer (Cervus nippon) originating from the western and northern regions of the Czech Republic. Based on the complete sequences of the gene encoding mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit 1 (cox1), all 20 females and four males belonged to the species S. cervi. We detected three developmental female stages (adult fertile females, juvenile L5 females and L4 female larvae) differing in size and some morphological traits as the subtle structure of peribuccal crown and shape and features of tail knob. Such differences were described in detail for the first time. The phylogenetic relationships within the family Onchocercidae have been evaluated using new information on the cox1 sequence of S. cervi (maximum likelihood method, GTR + I + G model). In accordance with the latest phylogenetic studies, the present analysis confirmed the ancient separation of the subclass Setariinae from the remaining two onchocercid lineages Dirofilariinae and Onchocerinae.

In this ex vivo study, S. cervi parasitoses were treated with Ivermectin (50 µM), Albendazole (200 µM) alone and Ivermectin + Albendazole (50 + 200 µM) at 37°C for 8 h and the motility and viability of the parasitoses were evaluated. Individually both drugs Ivermectin (Iver) and Albendazole (Alb) are reported to affect the function and integrity of ER, however till date, no reports are available on the functional changes in ER due to a combined Iver and Alb treatment of bovine helminth parasitosis. Here, we report the lethal effect of a combination treatment of Iver and Alb against adult bovine filarial parasitosis Setaria cervi. The underlying mechanism of drug action was elucidated by performing a systematic biochemical, molecular and proteomics based study. Altered calcium homeostasis in drug treated parasitoses lead to reduction in levels of total Endoplasmic Reticulum (ER) calcium by 50 % and 61 % and elevation by 50 % and 63 % in cytosol in Iver alone and Iver + Alb treated parasitoses respectively. Further, it was found that upregulated expression of ER localized GRP94, galactosyltransferase and glycosyltransferase activity in addition to reduction in activity of PDI indicated ER stress mechanisms being operative under combined drug treatment. Marked rise of 79 % reactive oxygen species and reduced antioxidant levels induced oxidative stress in drug treated parasitosis. The collective effect of both ER and oxidative stress might have triggered apoptosis, as evidenced by the elevated calpain activity, reduction of 67 % in cytochrome c oxidase and 83 % rise in caspase-3 activity in the Iver + Alb treated parasitoses respectively. The ER proteome analysis by 2D gel electrophoresis revealed 76 spots in the control and 56 spots in the treated proteome. A MALDI-MS/MS analysis of some of the differentially expressed spots of the combination drug treated parasitoses identified glucuronosyltransferase as a major upregulated protein with a fold change of 1.81. Trafficking protein, acyl transferase, MATH involved in protein folding were also found to be downregulated. Thus, this study based on biochemical and proteomic approaches indicates that a combination of anti-filarial drugs Iver and Alb can alter calcium homeostasis in bovine filarial parasitosis leading to induction of ER stress culminating into apoptosis.

Filarioid nematodes are parasites of the tissues and tissue spaces of all vertebrates except fish. Females produce microfilariae that enter the host's blood circulation or skin and may cause ocular and neurological pathology, leading to important implications in veterinary and public health. The present work is the first investigation on Setaria labiatopapillosa conducted in Morocco to characterize the morphological features of both adult and microfilaria forms. Two adult female nematodes were found free in the thoracic cavity of a slaughtered 3.5-year-old (6 teeth) Moroccan enhanced cross-breed bull which was born and raised in Morocco. The worms were identified as S. labiatopapillosa by light microscope (LM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) on the basis of their characteristic features of the anterior and posterior parts of the worms. The two S. labiatopapillosa worms measured 90 mm and 105 mm in length and 0.55 and 0.64 mm in width, respectively. Microfilariae were detected in the fully developed eggs contained in the uterus of both nematodes. A detailed morphology of both the adult females and larvae of S. labiatopapillosa is described using LM and SEM. Although the origin of S. labiatopapillosa analyzed in the present study is unknown and there is currently no evidence that Setaria spp. have invaded Morocco, further surveillance is warranted to determine the incidence of setariasis, identify its vectors, and take appropriate measures to protect the livestock and cattle industry of the country.

Molecular characterization studies on Setaria equina are limited. The present study aimed to characterize S. equina at the cytochrome c oxidase gene and to examine its phylogenetic relationships with other filarid species. Sequence analysis showed 100% nucleotide homology with an S. equina sequence from Italy (AJ544873). However, both sequences exhibited 7 nucleotide substitutions from a S. equina donkey isolate from Egypt (MK541847). Overall, S. equina formed a monophyletic sister group to Setaria tundra. All Setaria spp. examined formed a separate group on the phylogenetic tree that was related to corresponding Onchocerca spp. and Dirofilaria spp. clades. Human filarid worms-Brugia spp. and Wuchereria spp. grouped in a separate clade alongside Theilezia spp. Dipetalonema spp.-formed a separate group at the top of the tree.

BACKGROUND: Species of the Tabanidae are potent vectors of human and animal diseases, but they have not been thoroughly investigated to date. In Senegal (West Africa), little information is available on these dipterans. Our objective in this study was to investigate Senegalese tabanids and their diversity by using molecular and proteomics approaches, as well as their associated pathogens. METHODS: A total of 171 female tabanids were collected, including 143 from Casamance and 28 from Niokolo-Koba. The samples were identified morphologically by PCR sequencing and by MALDI-TOF MS, and PCR analysis was employed for pathogen detection and blood-meal characterization. RESULTS: The morphological identification revealed four species concordantly with the molecular identification: Atylotus fuscipes (79.5%), Tabanus guineensis (16.4%), Chrysops distinctipennis (3.5%) and Tabanus taeniola (0.6%) (not identified by PCR). The molecular investigation of pathogens revealed the presence of Trypanosoma theileri (6.6%), Leishmania donovani (6.6%), Setaria digitata (1.5%), Rickettsia spp. (5.1%) and Anaplasmataceae bacteria (0.7%) in A. fuscipes. Tabanus guineensis was positive for L. donovani (35.7%), S. digitata (3.6%) and Anaplasmataceae (17.8%). Leishmania donovani has been detected in 50% of C. distinctipennis specimens and the only T. taeniola specimen. No Piroplasmida, Mansonella spp. or Coxeilla burnetii DNA was detected. In addition to humans (96.43%), Chlorocebus sabeus, a non-human primate, has been identified as a host of (3.57%) analysed tabanids. MALDI-TOF MS enabled us to correctly identify all tabanid species that had good quality spectra and to create a database for future identification. CONCLUSIONS: Tabanids in Senegal could be vectors of several pathogens threatening animal and public health. To fully characterize these dipterans, it is therefore necessary that researchers in entomology and infectiology employ molecular characterization and mass spectrometric techniques such as MALDI-TOF MS to analyse these dipterans in Senegal and West Africa.

Setaria digitata is a nematode that resides in the peritoneal cavity of ruminants causing cerebrospinal nematodiasis disease affecting livestock and inflicting significant economic forfeitures in Asia. Further, this nematode can infect humans, causing abscesses, allergic reactions, enlarged lymph nodes, eye lesions and inflammation of the lungs. The 'ARE2 required for viability1' (ARV1) encodes for putative lipid transporter localized in the endoplasmic reticulum (ER) and Golgi complex membrane in humans and yeast. In the present study, the functional role of S. digitata ARV1 (SD-ARV1) was investigated using RNA interference (RNAi) reverse genetic tool. The targeted silencing SD-ARV1 transcripts by siRNA mediated RNAi resulted in a dramatic reduction of SD-ARV1 gene and protein expressions in S. digitata, which in turn modulated the parasitic motility, its production of eggs and microfilaria viability. Further, the same silencing caused severe phenotypic deformities such as distortion of eggs and embryonic development arrest in the intrauterine stages of adult female S. digitata. These results suggest that SD-ARV1 plays a pivotal role in worm embryogenesis, adult parasite motility and microfilariae viability. Finally, the ubiquitous presence of ARV1 in human filarial nematodes, its crucial functional roles in nematode biology and its remarkable diversity in primary protein structure compared to homologues in their hosts warrants further investigations to ascertain its candidacy in anthelmintic drug development.

AIM: Identification of a 29 kDa heat stress protein in filarial parasite Setaria cervi and evaluation of its diagnostic potential against lymphatic filariasis. METHODS AND RESULTS: The Heat shock proteins (HSPs) were induced in filarial parasite S cervi by incubated at 42°C for 2 hours. The 10% SDS-PAGE of cytosolic extract showed several over-expressed bands. The MALDI-LC/MS analysis of 29 kDa band showed 100% similarity with Bm14-3-3 like protein 2. Multiple sequence alignment of Bm14-3-3 like protein 2 sequence with W bancrofti, Caenorhabditis elegans; Loa loa and Homo sapiens showed 100%, 86%, 83% and 78%, sequence similarity respectively. The antigenic efficacy of Sc14-3-3 protein was evaluated with different filarial sera using ELISA which showed cross-reactivity in order to Endemic Normal (EN) < Microfilaraemic (MF) < Chronic(CH) with IgG1 and EN < CH < MF in IgG4 ELISA. IgG1- and IgG4-specific immunoblotting with CH and MF sera further explicated its specific antigenic cross-reactivity. CONCLUSION: A 29 kDa heat shock protein of S cervi was identified as 14-3-3 protein having 100% homology to human filarial parasite B malayi. It showed strong reactivity with IgG1 and IgG4 subclass antibodies of W bancrofti-infected human sera suggesting that 14-3-3 protein could be used as a vaccine/ diagnostic marker.

Here we present the draft genome sequence of Setaria digitata, a parasitic nematode affecting cattle. Due to its similarity to Wuchereria bancrofti, the parasitic nematode that causes lymphatic filariasis in humans, S. digitata has been used as a model organism at the genomic level to find drug targets which can be used for the development of novel drugs and/or vaccines for human filariasis. Setaria digitata causes cerebrospinal nematodiasis in goats, sheep, and horses posing a serious threat to livestock in developing countries. The genome sequence of S. digitata will assist in finding candidate genes to use as drug targets in both S. digitata and W. bancrofti. The assembled draft genome is ∼90 Mb long and contains 8,974 genomic scaffolds with a G+C content of 31.73%.
