RESUMO

The liver plays a very important role in physiological processes of the human body. Liver regeneration has developed into an important area of study in liver disease. The Mtz (metronidazole)/NTR (nitroreductase)-mediated cell ablation system has been widely used to study the processes and mechanisms of liver injury and regeneration. However, high concentrations and toxic side effects of Mtz severely limit the application of the Mtz/NTR system. Therefore, screening new analogs to replace Mtz has become an important means to optimize the NTR ablation system. In this study, we screened five Mtz analogs including furazolidone, ronidazole, ornidazole, nitromide, and tinidazole. We compared their toxicity on the transgenic fish line Tg(fabp10a: mCherry-NTR) and their specific ablation ability on liver cells. The results showed that Ronidazole at a lower concentration (2 mM) had the same ability to ablate liver cells comparable with that of Mtz (10 mM), almost without toxic side effects on juvenile fish. Further study found that zebrafish hepatocyte injury caused by the Ronidazole/NTR system achieved the same liver regenerative effect as the Mtz/NTR system. The above results show that Ronidazole can replace Mtz with NTR to achieve superior damage and ablation effects in zebrafish liver.

RESUMO

Ronidazole (RDZ) is a veterinary antibiotic drug that has been used in animal husbandry as feed. However, improper disposal and illegal use of pharmaceuticals have severely polluted water resources. Doping/substitution of metal ions is an effective strategy to change the material's crystal phase, morphology, and electrocatalytic activity. In this work, nickel (Ni2+)-doped cobalt molybdate microrods (NCMO MRs) were prepared for the electrochemical detection of RDZ. The catalyst was prepared by reflux method followed by calcination at 500 °C. The prepared catalyst was confirmed by various spectroscopic and microscopic analyses. XRD and Raman spectroscopy demonstrated that the phase transition from ß-CoMoO4 to α-CoMoO4 was achieved by Ni2+ doping. The SEM analysis showed that cobalt molybdate (CMO) microrods were self-assembled during Ni2+ doping and formed an urchin-like structure, and the average diameter of the MRs was ±50 nm. The electrocatalytic activity of the catalysts was analyzed using the CV technique. The NCMO MRs/GCE exhibited the higher current response than the pristine CMO. The electron transfer coefficient (α = 0.56) and heterogeneous rate constant (ks = 0.32 s-1) of NCMO MRs/GCE were evaluated by kinetic studies. In addition, the diffusion coefficient of RDZ was determined to be 2.32 × 10-5 cm2/s. Moreover, NCMO MRs/GCE exhibits a low detection limit for RDZ (15 nM) as well as a higher sensitivity (1.57 µA µM-1 cm-2). The fabricated RDZ sensor was successfully applied to analysis of lake and tap water samples. Based on the results, we believe that the as-prepared NCMO MRs/GCE is a viable electrode material for RDZ sensors in environmental monitoring.

RESUMO

The importance of the textural and physicochemical characteristics upon the adsorption capacity of the commercial activated carbons (ACs) Coconut, Wood, Merck, Darco, and Norit towards ronidazole (RNZ) and diclofenac (DCF) from water solution was investigated thoroughly in this work. At pH = 7, Coconut AC and Wood AC presented the highest adsorption capacity towards RNZ (444 mg/g) and DCF (405 mg/g). The maximum mass of RNZ adsorbed onto Coconut AC was higher in this study than those outlined previously in other works. Besides, the maximum capacity of Wood AC for adsorbing DCF was comparable to those found for other ACs. The adsorption capacity of all the ACs was increased by surface area and was favored by incrementing the acidic site concentration. The π-π stacking interactions were the predominant adsorption mechanism for the RNZ and DCF adsorption on ACs, and the acidic sites favored the adsorption capacity by activating the π-π stacking. Electrostatic interactions did not influence the adsorption of RNZ on Coconut AC, but electrostatic repulsion decreased that of DCF on Wood AC. The adsorption of DCF on Wood AC was reversible but not that of RNZ on Coconut AC. Besides, the adsorption of RNZ and DCF on the Coconut and Wood ACs was endothermic in the range of 15-25 °C.

RESUMO

A photoelectrochemical sensing platform based on ligand-variable metal clusters charge transfer was established for the quantitative assay of ronidazole (RNZ) using Ce-porphyrin-metal-organic frameworks/silver nanowires (Ce-Por-MOFs/AgNWs). Rod-like Ce-Por-MOFs and well-dispersed sub-50 nm AgNWs were prepared using a hydrothermal method and polyol strategy, and then through simple drop coating to yield Ce-Por-MOFs/AgNWs nanocomposites. We investigated the intrinsic semiconducting properties of the composites. More importantly, it was found that the variable-valence metal node can provide electronic defect states similar to those caused by multi-metal doping, synergizing with the surface plasmon effect of AgNWs, which significantly improved the photoelectric conversion efficiency, thereby resulting in excellent optoelectronic properties. In combination with molecular imprinting, a competitive type trace photoelectrochemical sensor for RNZ was constructed using Fe2+ as the electron donor and probe. Under optimal conditions, the sensor response is proportional to the logarithm of RNZ concentration in the range 0.1-104 nM with a detected limit of 0.038 nM. The recoveries ranged from 87.2 to 116% with relative standard deviations (RSDs) < 6.5% (n = 3) in milk sample. This work reveals the charge-transfer process of variable-valence metal nodes in MOFs during photoelectrochemical processes, which will provide new insights for the sensing application of variable-valence metal MOFs.

RESUMO

Chromatography combined with mass spectrometry is the most commonly used detection technology, and it offers the advantages of high sensitivity and high selectivity. The quick, easy, inexpensive, effective, rugged, and safe (QuEChERS) method is low-cost, effective, and time efficient. The application of the QuEChERS has now been extended to the analysis of contaminants in food samples. The aim of the study was to identify different concentration levels of multiple harmful drug residues in bean sprouts. In this study, QuEChERS coupled with high performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (HPLC-MS/MS) was established for the simultaneous determination of 40 plant growth regulators, fungicides, insecticides, and antibiotics in bean sprouts. In the HPLC-MS/MS experiment, gibberellic acid, 4-fluorophenoxyacetic acid, chloramphenicol, N6-(δ2-isopentenyl)-adenine, 6-benzylaminopurine, 4-chlorophenoxyacetic acid, and 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4-D) were analyzed by MS/MS with negative electrospray ionization (ESI-). The other 33 target analytes (chlormequat, ronidazole, metronidazole, pymetrozine, dimetridazole, methomyl, carbendazim, enoxacin, levofloxacin, pefloxacin mesylate, norfloxacin, ciprofloxacin, enrofloxacin, thiabendazole, lomefloxacin, chlorpyrifos, sarafloxacin, imidacloprid, etc.) were analyzed by MS/MS with positive electrospray ionization (ESI+). Sensitive MS conditions were realized by optimizing the instrumental parameters such as the desolvent temperature, collision energy, spraying needle position, precursor ions, and product ions. Then, the optimal pretreatment method was determined by comparing the recovery rates of the 40 drugs obtained with different extraction solvents (methanol, acetonitrile, acetonitrile containing 0.1% ammonia, acetonitrile with 1% acetic acid), different extraction methods (ultrasonic extraction, shaking extraction), and purification with primary secondary amine (PSA) and C18. In this study, the bean sprouts samples were extracted twice by 10 mL acetonitrile with 1% acetic acid, and extracted under ultrasonic conditions. Then, the extracting solution was only cleaned with 100 mg C18. The chromatographic separation of the 40 compounds was accomplished on a Waters ACQUITY UPLC BEH C18 column (100 mm×2.1 mm, 1.7 µm) with gradient elution. Methanol and 0.01% formic acid aqueous solution were used as the mobile phases. The 40 compounds were analyzed in the multiple reaction monitoring (MRM) mode. The matrix matching external standard method was used for quantitative determination. The results showed that the 40 compounds could be analyzed within 15 min. Under the optimized conditions, the calibration curves showed good linearities for the 40 compounds, and the coefficients of determination (r2) were greater than 0.99 in the range of 2-200 µg/L. The limits of detection (LODs) and limits of quantification (LOQs) were in the range of 0.1-3 µg/kg and 0.3-9 µg/kg, respectively. Using negative bean sprouts as the substrates, the recovery tests were carried out at three spiked levels of 5, 10, and 50 µg/kg. The average recoveries of the 40 drugs were 78.5% to 115.3%, and the corresponding relative standard deviations (RSDs) were 1.3% to 9.7% (n=6). This method was successfully applied to the analysis of the 40 drug residues in 21 batches of local bean sprouts in Handan city. The results revealed the presence of extensive drug residues in the bean sprouts. The 26 batches were detected to varying degrees, among which 4-chlorophenoxyacetic acid, carbendazim, 6-benzyladenine, 2,4-D, enrofloxacin, and metronidazole were detected at high rates. The detection rates of 4-chlorophenoxyacetic acid, 6-benzyladenine, carbendazim, 2,4-D, gibberellic acid, and enrofloxacin were 28.6%, 19.0%, 9.5%, 9.5%, 4.8%, and 4.8%, respectively. The contents ranged from 37.5-352.4, 32.4-273.1, 28.8-38.7, 316.1-20.2, 19.9 and 13.6 µg/kg, respectively. Given its advantages of simplicity, rapidness, and high sensitivity, the developed method can be used for the rapid and accurate determination of trace levels of the 40 drug residues in large quantities of bean sprouts.

RESUMO

A 2-year-old, 4.2 kg, spayed female, Maine coon cat was referred to the veterinary hospital for evaluation of hyporexia, slow growth, and chronic, intermittent, mucoid, bloody, voluminous, and fetid diarrhea. The diarrhea had been observed since the cat was acquired from a cattery at 4 months of age; with acute worsening in the 5 d before presentation. Abdominal palpation revealed moderate pain. Ultrasonographic examination showed thickening of the jejunal wall and ileal loops, increased echogenicity of the jejunal mucosa, and enlargement of the jejunal and ileocolic lymph nodes. Histopathology of full-thickness intestinal biopsies showed moderate, diffuse, lymphoplasmacytic, erosive enteritis with hemorrhage and edema. Diffuse, lymphoplasmacytic, erosive colitis with mild, interstitial fibrosis and hemorrhage was also noted. The ileocecal lymph node biopsy showed eosinophilic lymphadenitis. Based on the immunohistochemical evaluation of intestinal samples with CD3 and CD79a antibodies, a diagnosis of lymphoma was ruled out. Fecal polymerase chain reaction testing was positive for Tritrichomonas foetus. Based on these results, inflammatory bowel disease and trichomonosis were diagnosed. Treatment for the cat included a hypoallergenic diet and an oral omega-3 fatty acid supplement, in conjunction with prednisolone, to manage the inflammatory bowel disease. Ronidazole was administered to target the Tritrichomonas foetus. The cat was clinically normal during a follow-up examination after 6 months of treatment.

Tritrichomonas foetus causes chronic large-bowel diarrhoea in cats, complicated not only by its chronicity but for its difficulty to treat, with few registered or effective products available, subsequently resulting in ronidazole frequently used off-label. The extent of T. foetus resistance to ronidazole is unknown. To demonstrate in vitro resistance of feline T. foetus to ronidazole and the self-resolution of the infection, we isolated novel T. foetus "feline" genotype strains from two cats in 2017 from the same household and monitored these cats over a three-year period. Axenic cultures of T. foetus from the cats were tested for in vitro resistance to metronidazole and ronidazole using anaerobic and aerobic culture assays. The minimum lethal concentration for the novel strains after incubation in aerobic conditions for 48 h were 50-100 µg/ml and 6.25-12.50 µg/ml for metronidazole and ronidazole, respectively. For susceptible T. foetus strains, the minimum lethal concentrations ranged from 1.56-12.50 µg/ml for metronidazole, and 0.39-3.13 µg/ml for ronidazole. The self-resolution of the infection was assessed using repeat diagnostic qPCR and culture. Whilst positive in 2018, the cat samples are no longer returning positive qPCR results in 2020 and 2021, indicating self-resolution over this period. This study demonstrated resistance to ronidazole for the first time in Australian cats and infection self-resolution without antimicrobial intervention is demonstrated. This study provides clinicians with the evidence to reduce the use of off-label ronidazole, and advice on the resolution timeframe for cats in single households.

RESUMO

The Metronidazole (MTZ)/nitroreductase (NTR)-mediated cell ablation system is the most commonly used chemical-genetic cell ablation method in zebrafish. This system can specifically ablate target cells under spatial and temporal control. The MTZ/NTR system has become a widely used cell ablation system in biological, developmental, and functional studies. However, the inadequate cell-ablation ability of some cell types and the side effects of high concentration MTZ impede extensive applications of the MTZ/NTR system. In the present study, the US drug collection library was searched to extend the NTR system. Six MTZ analogs were found, and the cell-ablation ability of these analogs was tested in zebrafish larvae. The results revealed that two of the NTR substrates, Furazolidone and Ronidazole, ablated target cells more efficiently than MTZ at lower concentrations. Furthermore, the working concentration of Ronidazole, but not Furazolidone and MTZ, did not affect axonal bridge formation during spinal cord regeneration. Our results, taken together, indicate that Ronidazole is a superior prodrug to MTZ for the NTR system, especially for the study of neuron regeneration in zebrafish larvae.

RESUMO

Clostridioides difficile infection (CDI) is a principal cause of hospital-acquired infections and fatalities worldwide. The need for new, more potent anticlostridial agents is far from being met. Drug repurposing can be utilized as a rapid and cost-efficient method of drug development. The current study was conducted to evaluate the activity of ronidazole, a veterinary antiprotozoal drug, as a potential treatment for CDI. Ronidazole inhibited the growth of clinical C. difficile isolates (including NAP1 and toxigenic strains) at a very low concentration (0.125 µg/mL) and showed superior killing kinetics compared with metronidazole, an anticlostridial agent from the same chemical category. In addition, ronidazole did not inhibit growth of several commensal organisms naturally present in the human intestine that play a protective role in preventing CDIs. Furthermore, ronidazole was found to be non-toxic to human gut cells and permeated a monolayer of colonic epithelial cells (Caco-2) at a slower rate than metronidazole. Finally, ronidazole outperformed metronidazole when both were tested at a dose of 1 mg/kg daily in a mouse model of CDI. Overall, ronidazole merits further investigation as a potential treatment for CDIs.

RESUMO

An original voltammetric screening method, employing glassy carbon electrode (GCE) with the differential-pulse voltammetry technique (DPV), has been developed to determine residues of the anti-parasitic agent Ronidazole (RNZ) in bovine meat. By using cyclic voltammetry (CV), it has been demonstrated that an irreversible cathodic process occurs at approximately -0.740 V (vs. Ag|AgCl, KCl 3 mol L-1) in a 0.100 mol L-1 phosphate buffer at pH 6.5 as supporting electrolyte. Furthermore, the behavior of RNZ in CV indicates the occurrence of a diffusion mass transfer process to the working electrode surface. The RNZ reduction mechanism was proposed as a 6-electron transfer, similar to Metronidazole under the same pH range. Quantification of RNZ and method validation were then carried out by DPV. The relative standard deviation (RSD) were 3.21% for intraday precision of 10 consecutive repetitions and 6.78% for interday precision after five analysis. Limits of detection and quantification were also obtained, and the values were 0.107 and 0.358 mg kg-1, respectively. The recovery percentage for three different concentrations of RNZ in the bovine meat matrix ranged between 98.1% and 100.3%. The method proved to be efficient for screening RNZ in bovine meat.

RESUMO

Through powerful solvothermal and facile ultrasonic synthetic strategies, two unique cluster-based lanthanide Lu and Y nanoporous metal organic frameworks (MOFs) have been successfully prepared, namely, {[Lu2(L)2]·2DMF·H2O}n (Lu-MOF) and [Y(L)(DMF)0.75]n (Y-MOF) (H3L = terphenyl-3,4'',5-tricarboxylic acid). In addition, both the morphologies and nanosizes of Lu-MOF and Y-MOF materials also have been deliberately tuned by adjustable ultrasonic conditions including irradiation time (40, 60, and 80 min) and power (70 w, 100 w). Currently, it is noted that the abuse of antibiotics such as ornidazole and ronidazole leads to great damage to human health, and therefore the development of highly effective and facile detection methods for ornidazole and ronidazole is quite important. Herein, to improve the fluorescent sensing sensitivity of antibiotics, Eu3+ and Tb3+ have been introduced into Lu-MOF (under a solvothermal preparation method) to fabricate a dual-emission hybrid material Eu3+/Tb3+@Lu-MOF through a postsynthesis strategy, which can be successfully applied as a self-calibrated ratiometric fluorescent sensor for ornidazole and ronidazole with high selectivity and sensitivity (the Ksv value for ornidazole is 1.0854 × 106 [M-1], and the Ksv value for ronidazole is 1.0595 × 107 [M-1]) and low detection limit values (2.85 nM for ornidazole and 26.7 nM for ronidazole). On the other hand, amoeba liver abscess (ALA) will easily lead to irregular fever, night sweats, and other tortured symptoms; C-reactive protein autoantibody (CRP Ab) is the important biomarker for the detection of ALA. Given this, Y-MOF (under the solvothermal preparation method) also has been successfully designed to combine FAM-labeled NH-ssDNA to construct the scarcely reported excellent hybrid FAM-labeled NH-ssDNA/Y-MOF sensing platform for the highly effective discrimination of CRP Ab with excellent sensitivity and selectivity in real samples such as human serum solution.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Fecal polymerase chain reaction (PCR) testing for Tritrichomonas foetus is considered the most sensitive means for diagnosis of infection but results could be influenced by fecal collection technique and prior use of antimicrobial drugs. OBJECTIVES: To establish any association between fecal collection technique or treatment history and results of fecal PCR testing for T. foetus. ANIMALS: Fecal samples from 1717 cats submitted by veterinarians between January 2012 and December 2017. METHODS: This study used a retrospective analysis. T. foetus PCR test results from 1808 fecal samples submitted for diagnostic testing were examined for their association with method of fecal collection and prior antimicrobial treatments. Data were collected from sample submission form. RESULTS: Positive T. foetus PCR test results were obtained for 274 (16%) cats. Fecal samples collected via fecal loop had increased probability of positive PCR test results (odds ratio [OR] 2.04, 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.31-3.17, P = .002) compared to samples collected by colonic flush. There was no association between PCR test results and treatment history, treatment type, or prior treatment with ronidazole. After an initial positive PCR test, 4/19 (21%; 95% CI 2.7%-39.4%) cats treated with ronidazole had a second positive test result. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL IMPORTANCE: Results of this study support that fecal samples collected by loop might be better for PCR diagnosis of T. foetus infection. Lack of association of ronidazole with PCR test results and a 21% all-potential-causes failure rate of ronidazole in cats with preconfirmed infection are important limitations to use of this drug.

RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: Asbestos-related diseases and cancers represent a major public health concern. OBJECTIVE: To conduct a systematic review and meta-analysis to demonstrate that asbestos exposure increases the risk of prostate cancer. METHODS: The PubMed, Cochrane Library, Embase, and ScienceDirect databases were searched using the keywords (prostate cancer OR prostatic neoplasm) AND (asbestos* OR crocidolite* OR chrysotile* OR amphibole* OR amosite*). To be included, articles needed to describe our primary outcome: Risk of prostate cancer after any asbestos exposure. RESULTS: We included 33 studies with 15,687 cases of prostate cancer among 723,566 individuals. Asbestos exposure increased the risk of prostate cancer (effect size = 1.10, 95% confidence interval [CI] = 1.05-1.15). When we considered mode of absorption, respiratory inhalation increased the risk of prostate cancer (1.10, 95% CI = 1.05-1.14). Both environmental and occupational exposure increased the risk of prostate cancer (1.25, 95% CI = 1.01-1.48; and 1.07, 1.04-1.10, respectively). For type of fibers, the amosite group had an increased risk of prostate cancer (1.12, 95% CI = 1.05-1.19), and there were no significant results for the chrysotile/crocidolite group. The risk was higher in Europe (1.12, 95% CI = 1.05-1.19), without significant results in other continents. DISCUSSION: Asbestos exposure seems to increase prostate cancer risk. The main mechanism of absorption was respiratory. Both environmental and occupational asbestos exposure were linked to increased risk of prostate cancer. CONCLUSION: Patients who were exposed to asbestos should possibly be encouraged to complete more frequent prostate cancer screening.

RESUMO

Nitroimidazoles are found in pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) and, when discharged into the environment, have adverse effects on human health and survival. Advanced oxidation technologies (AOTs) based on persulfate (PS) can rapidly and efficiently degrade organic pollutants via strong oxidizing radicals under activation conditions. This study investigated the degradation of ronidazole (RNZ) by indirect electrolytic generation of PS and its activator, ferrous ion (Fe2+). An electrochemical system was developed, with a high concentration of PS generated at the anode while the activator Fe2+ was produced at the cathode. It showed that ammonium polyphosphate (APP) could effectively promote the electrolysis of PS. A high current efficiency (88%) at the anode could be obtained after 180 min at a high current density (300 mA cm-2). However, Fe2+ was inhibited at the cathode due to material control. The degradation of RNZ in the Fe2+/PS system generated from the electrochemical system was also explored. Increasing PS concentration and Fe2+/PS ratio were beneficial to the RNZ degradation. In homogeneous reactions, the degradation efficiency of RNZ could be improved by decreasing the Fe2+ addition rate through a peristaltic pump. Five intermediates were also detected and the degradation pathways were proposed. These findings provide a new method and mechanism for rapid and efficient degradation of RNZ.

RESUMO

In a group of pedigree cats (n = 17) in poor health condition housed in an animal shelter in Vienna, Austria, with a history of persistent diarrhea, Tritrichomonas foetus infection was detected by PCR. Despite pre-existing clinical conditions all cats were treated with ronidazole (30 mg/kg PO q24h for 14 days) under close observation. After treatment, 11 of 14 initially positive animals remained negative for T. foetus during the observation period (six to eight weeks post treatment) and no diarrhea was observed. During treatment, nine cats showed mild to moderate neurological disorders (incoordination, mild tremor) at least once; six of these had already shown similar signs before treatment. Ronidazole treatment of multimorbid animals is acceptable if the benefit (here: clinical resolution and release from quarantine for adoption) is high. It is hypothesized that a high degree of inbreeding is a significant risk factor for the development of tritrichomonosis in cats.

RESUMO

Ultraviolet light-emitting diodes (UV-LEDs) are promising alternatives to conventional low-pressure UV (LPUV) lamps, mainly because they contain no toxic mercury and have a potential for less energy consumption and longer lifetime. In this study, UV sources including UV-LEDs (265, 275 and 285 nm) and LPUV (254 nm) were compared in UV/chlorine degradation of an organic contaminant, ronidazole (RNZ). UV-LED/chlorine performed better than LPUV/chlorine at neutral and alkaline pH values for RNZ degradation considering the fluence-based rate constant. However, the wall plug efficiencies of UV-LEDs are relatively low at present and must reach about 20-25% to achieve the same electrical energy per order as the LPUV in UV/chlorine degradation of RNZ at pH 7.5 and 9. Neither the contribution of radical (HO· or Cl·) nor the quantum yield of chlorine could explain the different RNZ degradation rate by UV/chlorine at different wavelengths and pH values, while the chlorine photolysis rate should be the key factor for these phenomena. The effects of common co-existing substances in real water (chloride, bicarbonate and natural organic matter) on UV/chlorine degradation of RNZ were similar at different UV wavelengths. Opposite to other oxidants or reductants, the molar absorption coefficient of chlorine increases when the UV wavelength increases from 254 to 285 nm at neutral and alkaline pH, which makes UV-LED/chlorine one of the best choices for UV-LED-based advanced oxidation/reduction processes.

RESUMO

In this study, a simple, cost-effective, and sensitive HPLC diode-array detection method was developed for the simultaneous determination of six different 5-nitroimidazoles [metronidazole, 2-hydroxymethyl-1-methyl-5-nitro-1H-imidazole, dimetridazole (DMZ), ronidazole, ornidazole, and ipronidazole] in bovine milk samples. A QuEChERS-based sample preparation procedure was optimized by evaluating different cleanup sorbents, including zirconium-based sorbents (Z-Sep and Z-Sep+), C18, and primary-secondary amine (PSA), as well as EMR-Lipid cleanup solution. Acceptable analytical performance for all analytes was observed with recoveries in the range of 45-93% and RSDs of less than 15%. Negligible matrix interference was observed for most of the analytes due to application of PSA sorbent in a dispersive solid-phase extraction cleanup step. Method LOQs (mLOQs) for five of the six investigated analytes were set at a satisfactory low food product value of 2.5 ng/mL. For DMZ only, the mLOQ was set at 10 ng/mL. The procedure was evaluated through the analysis of 10 different natural samples.

RESUMO

A water-stable 3D luminescent metal-organic framework (MOF), [Eu6Zn(µ3-OH)8(NDC)6(H2O)6]n (1), constructed from heterometallic [EuIII6ZnII] clusters and electron-rich π-conjugated 1,4-naphthalenedicarboxylic acid (H2NDC) ligands exhibits highly sensitive, selective, and reversible detection of ronidazole, which represents the first example of luminescent MOFs based on Ln-TM heterometallic clusters for the detection of antibiotics in aqueous solution.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Tritrichomonas foetus is an emergent and important enteric pathogen of cats, which causes prolonged diarrhoea in cats. CASE PRESENTATION: This study describes a T. foetus infection in a seven-month-old, entire male domestic shorthair kitten with a six-month history of persistent large intestinal diarrhoea, faecal incontinence, prostration, apathy and weight loss. Parasites were microscopically observed and confirmed by PCR and DNA sequencing. Molecular analyses were carried out comparing the sequence obtained in this study with T. foetus and T. suis. Retrieved from GenBank. After treatment with ronidazole, the cat showed resolution of clinical signs. CONCLUSIONS: This is the first clinical case of T. foetus infection in a chronic diarrheic cat in Brazil and South America, confirming the presence of this pathogen in this part of the world and highlighting the importance of this protozoa being considered in the differential diagnosis of cats presenting diarrhoea of the large intestine. Our case report enriches our knowledge on the geographical distribution of T. foetus in cats in Brazil and provides further understanding of the clinical significance of feline intestinal trichomoniasis in this country.

RESUMO

Practical relevance: Trichomonosis of the large intestine of the cat was described as a cause of chronic diarrhea over 20 years ago. The trichomonad was identified as Tritrichomonas foetus, with a genotype that is distinct from venereal T foetus of cattle. Clinical challenges: Despite multiple means for diagnosis of the infection, including light microscopy, protozoal culture and PCR amplification using species-specific primers, tests with even greater sensitivity are needed. Feline trichomonosis is resistant to all commonly used antiprotozoal drugs. Ronidazole is currently the only drug demonstrated to be effective in eliminating the infection from cats; however, this drug has a narrow safety margin and clinical resistance is increasingly recognized. The more we learn about trichomonosis in cats, the more complicated and controversial the infection has become, ranging from what we should call the organism to whether we should even bother trying to treat it. Global importance: Feline trichomonosis is recognized to occur worldwide and is regarded as one of the most common infectious causes of colitis in the domestic cat. The infection is widespread in catteries and shelters; and, while remission of diarrhea may occur over time, persistence of the infection is common. Evidence base: This review provides a comprehensive examination of what is currently known about feline trichomonosis and pinpoints areas, based on the authors' opinion, where further research is needed.
