Acidity is an important property of particulate matter (PM) in the atmosphere, but its association with PM toxicity remains unclear. Here, this study quantitively reports the effect of the acidity level on PM toxicity via pH-control experiments and cellular analysis. Oxidative stress and cytotoxicity potencies of acidified PM samples at pH of 1-2 were up to 2.8-5.2 and 2.1-13.2 times higher than those at pH of 8-11, respectively. The toxic potencies of PM samples from real-world smoke plumes at the pH of 2.3 were 9.1-18.2 times greater than those at the pH of 5.6, demonstrating a trend similar to that of acidified PM samples. Furthermore, the impact of acidity on PM toxicity was manifested by promoting metal dissolution. The dramatic increase by 2-3 orders of magnitude in water-soluble metal content dominated the variation in PM toxicity. The significant correlation between sulfate, the pH value, water-soluble Fe, IC20, and EC1.5 (p < 0.05) suggested that acidic sulfate could enhance toxic potencies by dissolving insoluble metals. The findings uncover the superficial association between sulfate and adverse health outcomes in epidemiological research and highlight the control of wet smoke plume emissions to mitigate the toxicity effects of acidity.

Biostimulants are obtained from various sources like plants, animals, microorganisms, and industrial by-products as well as waste material. Their utilization in agriculture practices is being increased that is giving positive results. The purpose of the current study was to use plant-derived smoke (SMK) solution and biogas digestate (BGD) slurry as biostimulant to elucidate their impact on potato (Solanum tuberosum) performance. The experiment was conducted in lab as well as field conditions, and SMK and BGD solutions were prepared in varying concentrations such as SMK 1:500, SMK 1:250, BGD 50:50, and BGD 75:25. Foliar applications were performed thrice during experiments and data were collected related to photosynthesis, growth, pigments, and genome-wide methylation profiling. Net photosynthesis rate (A) and water use efficiency (WUE) were found higher in SMK- and BGD-treated lab and field grown plants. Among pigments, BGD-treated plants depicted higher levels of Chl a and Chl b while SMK-treated plants showed higher carotenoid levels. Alongside, enhancement in growth-related parameters like leaf number and dry weight was also observed in both lab- and field-treated plants. Furthermore, DNA methylation profile of SMK- and BGD-treated plants depicted variation compared to control. DNA methylation events increased in all the treatments compared to control except for SMK 1:500. These results indicate that smoke and slurry both act as efficient biostimulants which result in better performance of plants. Biostimulants also affected the genome-wide DNA methylation profile that resultantly might have changed the plant gene expression profiling and played its role in plant responsiveness to these biostimulants. However, there is need to elucidate a possible synergistic effect of SMK and BGD on plant growth along with gene expression profiling.

With the growing climate change crisis, public health agencies and practitioners must increasingly develop guidance documents addressing the public health risks and protective measures associated with multi-hazard events. Our Policy and Practice Review aims to assess current public health guidance and related messaging about co-exposure to wildfire smoke and extreme heat and recommend strengthened messaging to better protect people from these climate-sensitive hazards. We reviewed public health messaging published by governmental agencies between January 2013 and May 2023 in Canada and the United States. Publicly available resources were eligible if they discussed the co-occurrence of wildfire smoke and extreme heat and mentioned personal interventions (protective measures) to prevent exposure to either hazard. We reviewed local, regional, and national governmental agency messaging resources, such as online fact sheets and guidance documents. We assessed these resources according to four public health messaging themes, including (1) discussions around vulnerable groups and risk factors, (2) symptoms associated with these exposures, (3) health risks of each exposure individually, and (4) health risks from combined exposure. Additionally, we conducted a detailed assessment of current messaging about measures to mitigate exposure. We found 15 online public-facing resources that provided health messaging about co-exposure; however, only one discussed all four themes. We identified 21 distinct protective measures mentioned across the 15 resources. There is considerable variability and inconsistency regarding the types and level of detail across described protective measures. Of the identified 21 protective measures, nine may protect against both hazards simultaneously, suggesting opportunities to emphasize these particular messages to address both hazards together. More precise, complete, and coordinated public health messaging would protect against climate-sensitive health outcomes attributable to wildfire smoke and extreme heat co-exposures.

Smoking is the major cause of cardiovascular diseases and cancer. It induces oxidative stress, leading to DNA damage and cellular senescence. Senescent cells increase the expression and release of pro-inflammatory molecules and matrix metalloproteinase, which are known to play a vital role in the initiation and progression of cardiovascular diseases and metastasis in cancer. The current study investigated the smoking induced cellular senescence and employed colchicine that blocked senescence in endothelial cells exposed to tobacco smoke condensate. Colchicine prevented oxidative stress and DNA damage in tobacco smoke-condensate-treated endothelial cells. Colchicin reduced ß-gal activity, improved Lamin B1, and attenuated cell growth arrest markers P21 and P53. Colchicine also ameliorated the expression of SASP factors and inhibited the activation of NF-kB and MAPKs P38 and ERK. In summary, colchicine inhibited tobacco smoke condensate-induced senescence in endothelial cells by blocking the activation of NF-kB and MAPKs P38 and ERK.

Fire and smoke detection is crucial for the safe mining of coal energy, but previous fire-smoke detection models did not strike a perfect balance between complexity and accuracy, which makes it difficult to deploy efficient fire-smoke detection in coal mines with limited computational resources. Therefore, we improve the current advanced object detection model YOLOv8s based on two core ideas: (1) we reduce the model computational complexity and ensure real-time detection by applying faster convolutions to the backbone and neck parts; (2) to strengthen the model's detection accuracy, we integrate attention mechanisms into both the backbone and head components. In addition, we improve the model's generalization capacity by augmenting the data. Our method has 23.0% and 26.4% fewer parameters and FLOPs (Floating-Point Operations) than YOLOv8s, which means that we have effectively reduced the computational complexity. Our model also achieves a mAP (mean Average Precision) of 91.0%, which is 2.5% higher than the baseline model. These results show that our method can improve the detection accuracy while reducing complexity, making it more suitable for real-time fire-smoke detection in resource-constrained environments.

BACKGROUND: Western Montana, USA, experiences complex air pollution patterns with predominant exposure sources from summer wildfire smoke and winter wood smoke. In addition, climate change related temperatures events are becoming more extreme and expected to contribute to increases in hospital admissions for a range of health outcomes. Evaluating while accounting for these exposures (air pollution and temperature) that often occur simultaneously and may act synergistically on health is becoming more important. METHODS: We explored short-term exposure to air pollution on children's respiratory health outcomes and how extreme temperature or seasonal period modify the risk of air pollution-associated healthcare events. The main outcome measure included individual-based address located respiratory-related healthcare visits for three categories: asthma, lower respiratory tract infections (LRTI), and upper respiratory tract infections (URTI) across western Montana for ages 0-17 from 2017-2020. We used a time-stratified, case-crossover analysis with distributed lag models to identify sensitive exposure windows of fine particulate matter (PM2.5) lagged from 0 (same-day) to 14 prior-days modified by temperature or season. RESULTS: For asthma, increases of 1 µg/m3 in PM2.5 exposure 7-13 days prior a healthcare visit date was associated with increased odds that were magnified during median to colder temperatures and winter periods. For LRTIs, 1 µg/m3 increases during 12 days of cumulative PM2.5 with peak exposure periods between 6-12 days before healthcare visit date was associated with elevated LRTI events, also heightened in median to colder temperatures but no seasonal effect was observed. For URTIs, 1 unit increases during 13 days of cumulative PM2.5 with peak exposure periods between 4-10 days prior event date was associated with greater risk for URTIs visits that were intensified during median to hotter temperatures and spring to summer periods. CONCLUSIONS: Delayed, short-term exposure increases of PM2.5 were associated with elevated odds of all three pediatric respiratory healthcare visit categories in a sparsely population area of the inter-Rocky Mountains, USA. PM2.5 in colder temperatures tended to increase instances of asthma and LRTIs, while PM2.5 during hotter periods increased URTIs.

Chiang Mai encounters severe pollution during the wildfire season. Wildland firefighters encounter various hazards while engaged in fire suppression operations, which encompass significant exposure to elevated concentrations of air pollutants resulting from combustion, especially particulate matter. The adverse effects of wildfire smoke on respiratory health are a significant concern. The objective of this study was to examine the potential adverse effects of PM2.5 exposure on the respiratory function and DNA damage of wildland firefighters. This prospective cohort study conducted in Chiang Mai from January to May 2022 planned to evaluate the health status of wildland firefighters during the pre-peak, peak, and post-peak ambient air pollution seasons. The measurement of PM2.5 was done at every forest fire station, as well as utilizing data from the Pollution Control Department. Participants received general health examinations, spirometry evaluations, and blood tests for DNA damage analysis. Pair t-tests and multiple regression models were used to examine the connection between pulmonary function parameters (FVC, FEV1) and PM2.5 concentration, with a significance level of P < 0.05. Thirty-three peak-season and twenty-one post-peak-season participants were enrolled. Four pre-peak-season wildland firefighters had FVC and FEV1 declines of > 15%. Multiple regression analysis showed a negative association between PM2.5 exposure and FVC% predicted (- 2.81%, 95% CI - 5.27 to - 0.34%, P = 0.027) and a marginally significant negative correlation with FVC (- 114.38 ml, 95% CI - 230.36 to 1.59 ml, P = 0.053). The remaining pulmonary measures showed a statistically insignificant decline. There were no significant changes in DNA damage detected. Wildland firefighters suffered a significant decline in pulmonary function associated with PM2.5 exposure. Spirometry is crucial for monitoring and promptly identifying respiratory issues that occur during wildfire seasons. Further research is recommended to explore DNA damage alterations and their potential association with PM2.5.

Smoke taint in wine has become a critical issue in the wine industry due to its significant negative impact on wine quality. Data-driven approaches including univariate analysis and predictive modeling are applied to a data set containing concentrations of 20 VOCs in 48 grape samples and 56 corresponding wine samples with a taster-evaluated smoke taint index. The resulting models for predicting the smoke taint index of wines are highly predictive when using as inputs VOC concentrations after log conversion in both grapes and wines (Pearson Correlation Coefficient PCC = 0.82; R2 = 0.68) and less so when only grape VOCs are used (Pearson Correlation Coefficient PCC = 0.76; R2 = 0.56), and the classification models also show the capacity for detecting smoke-tainted wines using both wine and grape VOC concentrations (Recall = 0.76; Precision = 0.92; F1 = 0.82) or using only grape VOC concentrations (Recall = 0.74; Precision = 0.92; F1 = 0.80). The performance of the predictive model shows the possibility of predicting the smoke taint index of the wine and grape samples before fermentation. The corresponding code of data analysis and predictive modeling of smoke taint in wine is available in the Github repository (https://github.com/IBPA/smoke_taint_prediction).

Obesity can cause respiratory disorders inflicted by adipose tissue accumulation and the numerous cytokines adipocytes produce. Smoking is, first of all, associated with a wide range of lung diseases characterized by diffuse changes in the lung tissue and a decrease in the respiratory volume of the lungs. The study aimed to investigate the ultrastructural changes in the lungs of sexually mature male rats under conditions of experimental obesity and smoking. The total sample of experimental animals consisted of 120 rats, divided into four groups: the control group (n=30) - conditionally healthy rats fed on a standard diet; a group of rats subjected to isolated exposure to tobacco smoke (n=30); a group of experimentally obese rats (n=30) and a group of experimentally obese rats simultaneously exposed to tobacco smoke (n=30) - feeding using a high-fat diet with exposure to a chamber with tobacco smoke. The revealed ultrastructural features of the lungs in the group of rats with experimental obesity and the group of rats with experimental obesity that were simultaneously exposed to tobacco smoke did not differ qualitatively, which indicates that pathological changes in the ultrastructure of the lung tissue developed regardless of the presence or absence of a direct damaging effect on the lung tissue of passive smoking.

BACKGROUND: The effects of smoking reduction on the incidence of lung cancer in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) are not well known. This study aimed to investigate the effects of changes in smoking habits after COPD diagnosis on lung cancer development in patients who smoked less than 30 pack-years. METHODS: This nationwide retrospective cohort study included 16,832 patients with COPD who smoked less than 30 pack-years at the time of COPD diagnosis. Based on changes in smoking habits in the health screening examination data, smokers were categorized into three groups: quitters, reducers, and sustainers. The primary outcome was the risk of lung cancer development, which was estimated using the Cox proportional hazards model. We also modelled the amount of smoking reduction as a continuous variable. RESULTS: During a median follow-up of 4 years, the cumulative incidence of lung cancer was the highest among sustainers, followed by reducers and quitters. Compared with sustainers, reducers (adjusted HR 0.74, 95% CI:0.56-0.98) and quitters (adjusted HR 0.78, 95% CI:0.64-0.96) had a significantly lower risk of lung cancer. Incidence of lung cancer showed a decreasing trend with a decreasing amount of smoking (P for linearity < 0.01). CONCLUSIONS: In patients with COPD who smoked less than 30 pack-years, smoking reduction and cessation lowered the risk of lung cancer.

Wildland fires contribute significantly to the ambient air pollution burden worldwide, causing a range of adverse health effects in exposed populations. The toxicity of woodsmoke, a complex mixture of gases, volatile organic compounds, and particulate matter, is commonly studied in vitro using isolated exposures of conventionally cultured lung cells to either resuspended particulate matter or organic solvent extracts of smoke, leading to incomplete toxicity evaluations. This study aimed to improve our understanding of the effects of woodsmoke inhalation by building an advanced in vitro exposure system that emulates human exposure of the airway epithelium. We report the development and characterization of an innovative system that permits live-cell monitoring of the intracellular redox status of differentiated primary human bronchial epithelial cells cultured at an air-liquid interface (pHBEC-ALI) as they are exposed to unfractionated woodsmoke generated in a tube furnace in real time. pHBEC-ALI exposed to freshly generated woodsmoke showed oxidative changes that were dose-dependent and reversible, and not attributable to carbon monoxide exposure. These findings show the utility of this novel system for studying the molecular initiating events underlying woodsmoke-induced toxicity in a physiologically relevant in vitro model, and its potential to provide biological plausibility for risk assessment and public health measures.

In electro-surgery, surgical smoke was hazard to surgeons and patient in theatre. In order to institute effective countermeasures, quantifying of the effect of tip temperature of electro-surgical unit to surgical smoke distribution in theatre was studied. The relation of tip temperature to power of electro-surgical unit through in vitro cutting experiment. Based on experiment data, the mathematical model was established to simulate the electro-surgery in laminar operation room. As the power of electro-surgical knife increased, the knife tip temperature increased. Total content of (CO, CO2, CH4, NH3) in waste gas and net flow rate of waste gas at outlet increased with the rising temperature of knife tip and formation rate of condensed tar droplets and non-viable particles also increased. Based on simulation, it was found that The maximum height of surgical smoke rising right above the incision of electro-surgical unit was increased with rising temperature of electro-surgical knife tip. There was a spread route of dispersed surgical smoke near the walls of theatre through natural convection. The polynomial fitting relationship was derived. As the tip temperature of knife increased from 200 to 500°C, maximum ascending height of surgical smoke right above the incision position of electro-surgical unit increased from 1.1 m to 1.45 m. When the tip temperature of electro-knife was more 400°C, the CO content in the surgeon's operating zone was more than 200 ppm, which would cause the surgeon's HbCO level increased. As the patient's tissue in the wound during operation was open, when the electro-knife of more than 400°C, the content of condensed tar droplets and in-viable particle was higher than 20 g/m3 and 12 g/m3 in the zone around patient's wound of open tissue, which should be hazard to health of patient.

INTRODUCTION: There have been rapid expansions in heated tobacco products (HTPs) outside of Japan and the Republic of Korea. In November 2018, HTPs were first introduced in Malaysia and since then, no studies have been conducted on Malaysians' use of HTPs. This study is the first to examine the prevalence of HTP use and reasons for use among Malaysian adults who smoked cigarettes. METHODS: Data came from the 2020 ITC Malaysia Survey, a web-based survey of a nationally representative sample of adults who smoked (n=1047) aged 18 and older. They were asked on ever heard of, ever used, and currently using HTPs, and their reasons for using HTPs. RESULTS: Overall, 25.4% (n= 324; 95% CI:22.3%-28.7%) of Malaysians who smoked reported ever used HTPs with 6.7% (n=85; 95% CI:22.3%-28.7%) were using them daily and 8.1% (n=110; 95% CI:6.4% -10.2%) were using HTPs non-daily. Most of them (57.2%) who dual use were of aged 25-39 and 97.3% were males. Among those who smoked daily, almost half (49.3%) were also using HTP daily. Among those who used HTPs daily and non-daily, curiosity (84.2%, 95% CI:78.4%-90.0%), taste (83.2%, 95% CI:77.3%-89.1%), and appealing technology (78.5%, 95% CI:71.3%-85.6%) were the most reported reasons. Among those who used HTPs daily, curiosity was the top reason (87.9%, 95% CI:78.9%-93.4%), while among non-daily, taste good was the top reason (81.9%, 95% CI:71.9%-88.8%). CONCLUSIONS: The very high use of HTPs among Malaysians who smoked requires continued public health surveillance that can inform the regulation of these novel tobacco products.

Over the past decade, our understanding of the impact of air pollution on short- and long-term population health has advanced considerably, focusing on adverse effects on cardiovascular and respiratory systems. There is, however, increasing evidence that air pollution exposures affect cognitive function, particularly in susceptible groups. Our study seeks to assess and hazard rank the cognitive effects of prevalent indoor and outdoor pollutants through a single-centre investigation on the cognitive functioning of healthy human volunteers aged 50 and above with a familial predisposition to dementia. Participants will all undertake five sequential controlled exposures. The sources of the air pollution exposures are wood smoke, diesel exhaust, cleaning products, and cooking emissions, with clean air serving as the control. Pre- and post-exposure spirometry, nasal lavage, blood sampling, and cognitive assessments will be performed. Repeated testing pre and post exposure to controlled levels of pollutants will allow for the identification of acute changes in functioning as well as the detection of peripheral markers of neuroinflammation and neuronal toxicity. This comprehensive approach enables the identification of the most hazardous components in indoor and outdoor air pollutants and further understanding of the pathways contributing to neurodegenerative diseases. The results of this project have the potential to facilitate greater refinement in policy, emphasizing health-relevant pollutants and providing details to aid mitigation against pollutant-associated health risks.

Wildfires are a significant threat to human health, in part through degraded air quality. Prescribed burning can reduce wildfire severity but can also lead to an increase in air pollution. The complexities of fires and atmospheric processes lead to uncertainties when predicting the air quality impacts of fire and make it difficult to fully assess the costs and benefits of an expansion of prescribed fire. By modeling differences in emissions, surface conditions, and meteorology between wildfire and prescribed burns, we present a novel comparison of the air quality impacts of these fire types under specific scenarios. One wildfire and two prescribed burn scenarios were considered, with one prescribed burn scenario optimized for potential smoke exposure. We found that PM2.5 emissions were reduced by 52%, from 0.27 to 0.14 Tg, when fires burned under prescribed burn conditions, considerably reducing PM2.5 concentrations. Excess short-term mortality from PM2.5 exposure was 40 deaths for fires under wildfire conditions and 39 and 15 deaths for fires under the default and optimized prescribed burn scenarios, respectively. Our findings suggest prescribed burns, particularly when planned during conditions that minimize smoke exposure, could be a net benefit for the impacts of wildfires on air quality and health.

Objective: To analyze and summarize the trends and hot spots in the field of neurological damage caused by electric welding operations, and to provide ideas for new researches by searching the domestic and international literature. Methods: In December 2022, using Web of Science Citation Index (Web of Science), China Journal Full-Text Database (CNKI) and Wanfang Database as search databases, literature search was conducted on the Chinese and English search terms related to eletrical welding operations and neurological damage. The bibliometric analysis software VOSviewer 1.6.18 and CiteSpace 6.1.6 were used to visualize the publication year, publication quantity, country, research institution and key words of the literature. Results: A total of 309 articles (112 in Chinese and 197 in English) were included in this study. The first domestic and international papers were published in 1976 and 1994 respectively, and the number of papers reached the peak in 2006 and 2018, and then showed a downward trend to varying degrees. In China, Shandong First Medical University (including Shandong Institute of Occupational Health and Occupational Disease Prevention and Shandong Academy of Medical Sciences) and Wuhan University of Science and Technology had the largest number of publications. The 309 articles were from 52 Chinese journals and 86 English journals. The co-occurrence analysis of key words showed that the domestic research mainly focused on eletrical welding operation, welding workers, neurobehavioral function and manganese, and the nervous system damage caused by manganese in welding smoke was the field of international attention. Long term exposure, risk, and performance were key buzzwords in the field. Conclusion: The research focus in the field of nervous system damage caused by electric welding operation has an obvious trend of time evolution, gradually transiting from clinical manifestations to its toxic mechanism and early biomarkers.

Firefighters perform high-risk activities and during the course of their functions are highly exposed to a wide range of occupational hazards, including air pollution. Thus, this study aimed to assess the exposure of firefighters in prescribed wildland fires and their occupational exposure, as well as to identify and chemically characterise the particles collected during wildland firefighting and inside fire stations. Exposure to wildfire smoke was evaluated in 7 prescribed fires in Portugal, 2 in the north and 5 in the south of Viseu district. The concentrations of PM2.5, NO2, SO2, CO and VOCs were monitored and exceedances to occupational exposure limit values were identified. Moreover, the chemical composition of PM2.5 was analysed. The results showed that firefighters were exposed to high concentrations of these pollutants during prescribed fires and that, in some cases, exceeded occupational exposure limits, both for time-weighted average concentrations for an 8-h working day (a time-weighted average, TWA) of PM2.5, and for short-term exposure values (STEL) of NO2 and SO2. Despite being exposed to very high concentrations of CO, no exceedances to the occupational exposure values were observed. FT-IR and SEM-EDS allowed to chemically characterise the composition of the particles collected inside the fire stations and also during wildland fires, identifying mainly quartz, aluminium and magnesium silicates, characteristic of earth's crust constituents. and also, fibres that have undergone combustion. Concluding, firefighters' exposure to high concentrations of harmful pollutants, can lead to the degradation of their respiratory health. It is therefore extremely important to increase existing knowledge and conduct further studies, especially longitudinal ones, that can assess their lung function. This will allow an understanding of the impacts of smoke on firefighters' health and develop effective strategies to protect them during wildland firefighting operations.
