The intent of this study is to explore the physical properties and long-term performance of concrete made with metakaolin (MK) as a binder, using microsilica (MS) and nanosilica (NS) as substitutes for a portion of the ordinary Portland cement (OPC) content. The dosage of MS was varied from 5% to 15% for OPC-MK-MS blends, and the dosage of NS was varied from 0.5% to 1.5% for OPC-MK-NS blends. Incorporation of these pozzolans accelerated the hardening process and reduced the flowability, consistency, and setting time of the cement paste. In addition, it produced a denser matrix, improving the strength of the concrete matrix, as confirmed by scanning electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction analysis. The use of MS enhanced the strength by 10.37%, and the utilization of NS increased the strength by 11.48% at 28 days. It also reduced the penetrability of the matrix with a maximum reduction in the water absorption (35.82%) and improved the resistance to the sulfate attack for specimens containing 1% NS in the presence of 10% MK. Based on these results, NS in the presence of MK can be used to obtain cementitious structures with the enhanced strength and durability.

Acidic pH can modify the properties of repair cements. In this study, volumetric change and solubility of the ready-to-use bioceramic repair cement Bio-C Repair (BCR, Angelus, Londrina, PR, Brazil) were evaluated after immersion in phosphate-buffered saline (PBS) (pH 7.0) or butyric acid (pH 4.5). Solubility was determined by the difference in initial and final mass using polyethylene tubes measuring 4 mm high and 6.70 mm in internal diameter that were filled with BCR and immersed in 7.5 mL of PBS or butyric acid for 7 days. The volumetric change was established by using bovine dentin tubes measuring 4 mm long with an internal diameter of 1.5 mm. The dentin tubes were filled with BCR at 37°C for 24 hours. Scanning was performed with micro-computed tomography (micro-CT; SkyScan 1176, Bruker, Kontich, Belgium) with a voxel size of 8.74 µm. Then, the specimens were immersed in 1.5 mL of PBS or butyric acid at and 37 °C for 7 days. After this period, a new micro-CT scan was performed. Bio-C Repair showed greater mass loss after immersion in butyric acid when compared with immersion in PBS (p<0.05). Bio-C Repair showed volumetric loss after immersion in butyric acid and increase in volume after immersion in PBS (p<0.05). The acidic pH influenced the solubility and dimensional stability of the Bio-C Repair bioceramic cement, promoting a higher percentage of solubility and decrease in volumetric values.

AIM: The aim of the present study was to evaluate the shear bond strength of resin-modified glass ionomer cement with two different types of mineral trioxide aggregate at different time intervals. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 80 cylindrical blocks were prepared using a self-cure acrylic resin with a central cavity of 4 mm internal diameter and 2 mm height. The prepared samples were randomly divided into two groups (n = 40 each) according to the type of MTA cements used (ProRoot MTA and MTA Angelus). Two groups were further sub-divided into four sub-groups of 10 samples each according to the different time intervals. ProRoot MTA and MTA Angelus were placed in the prepared cavity and a wet cotton pellet was placed over the filled cavity. A hollow plastic tube was placed over the MTA surface and resin-modified glass ionomer cement (RMGIC) was placed into the hollow plastic tube and light-cured (Spectrum 800, Dentsply Caulk Milford, DE, USA) according to the time intervals decided. After light curing the plastic tubes were removed carefully and the specimens were stored at 37°C and 100% humidity for 24 hours to encourage setting of MTA. The specimens were mounted in a universal testing machine (ADMET) and a crosshead speed of 0.5 mm/min was applied to each specimen by using a knife-edge blade until the bond between the MTA and RMGIC failed. The data were statistically analyzed using ANOVA, post hoc Tukey's t-test and Fisher's t-test and p-value ≤ 0.5 was considered significant. RESULTS: For both ProRoot MTA and MTA Angelus there was no statistically significant difference between 45 minutes and 24 hours (p-value ≥ 0.8). For ProRoot MTA, shear bond strength value at 10 minutes were significantly lower than 45 minutes and 24 hours group. However, for MTA Angelus, shear bond strength value at 10 minute was not significantly different from 45 minutes group (p-value ≥ 0.3). For both ProRoot MTA and MTA Angelus shear bond strength value at 0 minute were the least and were significantly lower than 10 minutes, 45 minutes, and 24 hours, respectively (p-value ≥ 0.000). CONCLUSION: Resin-modified glass ionomer cement can be layered over MTA Angelus after it is allowed to set for 10 minutes. However, ProRoot MTA should be allowed to set for at least 45 minutes before the placement of RMGIC to achieve better shear bond strength. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE: Due to the variety of types of mineral trioxide aggregate cements available in dentistry, it is justifiable to emphasize on different time intervals as it may affect the shear bond strength of restorative cements. Such information is pivotal for the clinicians while using mineral aggregate-based cements that receive forces from the condensation of restorative materials or occlusion, as the compressive strength may be affected due to different time intervals. AIM: The aim of the current investigation was to evaluate the marginal microleakage of various esthetic restorative materials applied to primary teeth. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 75 noncarious primary molars that were removed for orthodontic intervention and teeth nearing exfoliation were chosen. One millimeter (mm) above the cementoenamel junction, on the buccal surface of the teeth, Class V cavities were prepared. William's graded periodontal probe was used to standardize cavity preparation on all teeth. 3 mm was the cavity's length, 2 mm in width, and 2 mm in depth. The teeth were then divided into three groups (25 samples in each group) according to the type of esthetic restorative material used. Group I: Resin-modified glass ionomer cement, Group II: Ormocer, Group III: Giomer. The samples underwent 500 cycles of thermocycling, with an immersion time of 60 seconds and a well time of 15 seconds, between 5 and 55°C. The samples were submerged in methylene blue dye for 24 hours at room temperature and dried. The samples were then divided into sections and examined with a stereomicroscope. Data was recorded and statistically analyzed. RESULTS: The least marginal microleakage was found in the ormocer group (1.22 ± 0.01) followed by resin-modified glass ionomer cement group (1.31 ± 0.07) and the giomer group (1.78 ± 0.03). There was a highly statistically significant difference found between resin-modified glass ionomer cement group and the ormocer group, resin-modified glass ionomer cement group and giomer group. And no significant difference was found between the ormocer group and the giomer group. CONCLUSION: The present study concluded that there was some amount of microleakage in primary teeth in all restorative materials examined in this in-vitro investigation. However, the marginal sealing ability of ormocer was found highest compared to resin-modified glass ionomer cement and Giomer materials. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE: The primary reason dental restorations fail, particularly in Class V cavities, is microleakage since the margins of these restorations are typically found in the dentin or cementum. Assessing microleakage is a crucial step in determining the marginal integrity of restorative materials. Purpose: The purpose of this study was to present an evidence-based guideline for primary teeth with deep caries or trauma requiring vital pulp therapies (VPT). Methods: A systematic review/meta-analysis on vital primary teeth resulting from trauma or caries was conducted using GRADE to assess the certainty of evidence for clinical recommendations. A decision tree was provided for choosing VPTs. Results: No articles on trauma VPT were found. For VPT in primary teeth with deep caries, indirect pulp treatment (IPT) or pulpotomy using the calcium silicate cement (mineral trioxide aggregate [MTA] or Biodentine®) show increased success over using direct pulp capping (DPC) and other pulpotomies. Different liners do not affect IPT success (high certainty) or DPC capping agents' success (very low certainty) after 24 months. It is strongly recommended, with high certainty from 24-month data, that calcium silicate cement pulpotomy is preferred over formocresol, ferric sulfate, zinc oxide eugenol pulpotomy, and other pulpotomies. Using selective caries removal and IPT for deep caries is strongly recommended with moderate certainty over complete and stepwise removal. Statistically, this results in significantly fewer pulp exposures. No caries removal and Hall technique crown may be used when indicated (moderate certainty at 24 months). For vital primary incisors with deep caries, pulpotomy was significantly better statistically than pulpectomy. Teeth diagnosed with/without reversible pulpitis pain showed comparable success after 12 months of treatment by IPT or calcium silicate cement pulpotomy. The following had little or no significant effect on MTA pulpotomy success: coronal pulp removal methods; irrigation solution; method to control hemorrhage; base over MTA; treatment in one or two visits; anterior or posterior teeth. Conclusions: Indirect pulp treatment or calcium silicate cement pulpotomy is likely to increase vital pulp therapy success over other VPTs such as direct pulp capping and other pulpotomies after 24 months (moderate certainty).

BACKGROUND: The selection of post-core material holds significant importance in endodontically treated teeth, influencing stress distribution in the dental structure after restoration. The use of computer-aided design/computer-aided manufacturing (CAD/CAM) glass fiber post-core possesses a better adaptation for different root canal morphologies, but whether this results in a more favorable stress distribution has not been clearly established. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This study employed finite element analysis to establish three models of post-core crown restoration with normal, oversized, and dumbbell-shaped root canals. The three models were restored using three different materials: CAD/CAM glass fiber post-core (CGF), prefabricated glass fiber post and resin core (PGF), and cobalt-chromium integrated metal post-core (Co-Cr), followed by zirconia crown restoration. A static load was applied and the maximum equivalent von Mises stress, maximum principal stress, stress distribution plots, and the peak of maximum displacement were calculated for dentin, post-core, crown, and the cement acting as the interface between the post-core and the dentin. RESULTS: In dentin of three different root canal morphology, it was observed that PGF exhibited the lowest von Mises stresses, while Co-Cr exhibited the highest ones under a static load. CGF showed similar stress distribution to that of Co-Cr, but the stresses were more homogeneous and concentrated apically. In oversized and dumbbell-shaped root canal remnants, the equivalent von Mises stress in the cement layer using CGF was significantly lower than that of PGF. CONCLUSIONS: In oversized root canals and dumbbell-shaped root canals, CGF has shown good performance for restoration of endodontically treated teeth. CLINICAL RELEVANCE: This study provides a theoretical basis for clinicians to select post-core materials for residual roots with different root canal morphologies and should help to reduce the occurrence of complications such as root fracture and post-core debonding.

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to evaluate enamel surface integrity and time consumed during residual cement removal after bracket debonding using different adhesive removal burs with and without a dental loupe. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Sixty human-extracted premolars were collected, cleaned, mounted, and prepared for orthodontic bracket bonding. Teeth were randomly divided into three main groups (n = 20) based on the adhesive removal method: tungsten carbide system (TC), sof-lex discs system (SD), and diamond system (DB) groups. Then, each group was subdivided into two subgroups (naked eye and magnifying loupe subgroups). The brackets were bonded and then debonded after 24 h, and the Adhesive Remnant Index (ARI) was assessed. The adhesive remnants were removed by different systems, and the final polishing was performed by Silicone OneGloss. The enamel surface roughness was evaluated before bracketing (T0), after residual cement removal (T1), and finally after polishing (T2) using surface Mitutoyo SJ-210 profilometry and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) to determine the Enamel Damage Index (EDI) score. The time consumed for adhesive removal was recorded in seconds. RESULTS: The Kruskal Wallis test showed a statistically significant difference in roughness values at T1 compared to T2 between subgroups (p < 0.001). When comparing EDI at T1 and T2, the Kruskal-Wallis H-test showed statistically significant differences in all subgroups. The pairwise comparisons revealed that EDI scores showed a statistically significant difference at T1 and T2 between DB vs. TC and SD (p = 0.015) but not between TC vs. SD (p = 1.000), indicating the highest roughness value observed in the DB group. The time for cement removal was significantly shorter in the magnifying loupe group than in the naked eye group and was shortest with the TC group, whereas the time was the longest with the DB group (p < 0.05). CONCLUSION: All three systems were clinically satisfactory for residual orthodontic adhesive removal. However, TC system produced the lowest enamel roughness, while the DB system created the greatest. The polishing step created smoother surfaces regardless of the systems used for resin removal.

This study analyzed the physical-chemical properties of bioactive ionomer materials. Cention N bioactive materials were evaluated chemically activated (CN) and light-cured (CN-LC), Equia Forte Fill (EQUI); conventional resin composite Filtek Z350 XT (Z350); resin glass ionomer cement Riva light Cure (RIVA) and flowable resin composite Filtek Bulk Fill Flow (BULK-F) were evaluated. Sixty specimens (n=10) were prepared for sorption (SR), solubility (SL), flexural strength (FS), shrinkage stress (SS), conversion degree (CD), microhardness (MI), and surface roughness (SR) tests. Non-cured and light-cured materials were assessed on FTIR. 30 human molar teeth were used in the bond strength test (BS). Data were subjected to ANOVA and post-hoc Tukey's test (5% of significance). EQUI showed more sorption in SR and no statistical difference from RIVA and CN-LC. CN group showed more solubility and EQUI presented less (p<0.05). BULK-F showed higher FS (MPa), without differences from CN and Z350, whereas EQUI presented the lowest FS not differing from RIVA. BULK-F and CN-LC showed more shrinkage stress differing from EQUI. CN-LC and CN showed higher CD differing from the other which showed no differences (p>0.05) between them. EQUI showed the highest hardness (p<0.05) in MI. There were no differences (p>0.05) in SR (µm). Z350 and BULK-F presented higher BS, whereas CN-LC showed the lowest, although not differing from EQUI and RIVA. Equia Forte's solubility and microhardness make it a good alternative as a restorative material. Cention N degree of conversion and flexural strength making it an esthetic option to amalgam.

Surface pre-reacted glass-ionomer (S-PRG) filler is a bioactive glass filler capable of releasing various ions. A culture medium to which was added an S-PRG filler eluate rich in boron was reported to enhance alkaline phosphatase (ALP) activity in human dental pulp-derived stem cells (hDPSC). To clarify the role of boron eluted from S-PRG fillers, the modified S-PRG filler eluate with different boron concentrations was prepared by using an anion exchange material. Therefore, elemental mapping analysis of anion exchange material, adsorption ratio, hDPSCs proliferation and ALP activity were evaluated. For statistical analysis, Kruskal-Wallis test was used, with statistical significance determined at p<0.05. ALP activity enhancement was not observed in hDPSC cultured in the medium that contained the S-PRG filler eluate from which boron had been removed. The result suggested the possibility that an S-PRG filler eluate with controlled boron release could be useful for the development of novel dental materials.

This study evaluated the bonding performance of coronal dentin disks, designed for biological restoration, and CAD/CAM resin composite disks when bonded to flat dentin surfaces using dual-cure resin cements, with and without a resin-coating (RC) technique. Three distinct groups were established within the non-RC group, each using one of the two types of resin cements in a self-adhesive mode: one-step self-etch adhesive (1-SEA) without light-cure, 1-SEA with light-cure, and a separate group using an alternate cement. Within the RC group, a subgroup was established for each cement. The microtensile bond strength (µTBS) of the disk-dentin beam was tested after 0 and 10,000 thermocycles in a 5°C/55°C. No significant µTBS difference was observed among the non-RC groups. However, when using RC, the µTBSs of coronal dentin disks significantly exceeded those of CAD/CAM resin composite disks. Thermocycle aging did not affect µTBS in any of the bonding methods, except in self-adhesive mode.

BACKGROUND: Glass ionomers are widely used for restoring carious primary teeth. However, their ability to bond to primary dentin is considered a challenge in pediatric dentistry. OBJECTIVES: The study aimed to evaluate the microshear bond strength (µSBS) of a resin-modified glass ionomer (RMGI) and a high-viscosity glass ionomer cement (Hv-GIC) to primary dentin using a universal adhesive. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Thirty human primary maxillary canines were cut in half and prepared for the µSBS test. The specimens (N = 60) were assigned to 6 groups. Three groups were defined for RMGI (FUJI II LC) and 3 groups for Hv-GIC (EQUIA Forte): with an immediately curing adhesive (G-Premio); with a delayed curing adhesive; and without an adhesive (control group). After preparing the dentin surfaces, the glass ionomers were bonded using Tygon® tubes with an internal diameter of 0.7 mm. The µSBS test was performed, and the data was analyzed using two-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) followed by Tukey's post hoc test. Additionally, the failure modes were determined using a stereomicroscope. Six specimens, one for each study group, were prepared for scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analysis to observe the glass ionomer-dentin interface. RESULTS: The type of glass ionomer did not have a significant effect on the µSBS (p = 0.305). Groups that received universal adhesive application prior to glass ionomer exhibited a significantly higher µSBS (p < 0.0001). However, there was no significant difference between the immediately curing and delayed curing groups (p = 0.157). The predominant failure mode was mixed failure. CONCLUSIONS: Higher bond strength of glass ionomers to primary teeth can be achieved by using universal adhesives, which, in addition to the proven benefits of glass ionomers, can improve their clinical success.

BACKGROUND: Achieving sufficient professional mechanical biofilm removal (PMPR) can be challenging in supportive periodontal therapy (SPT), particularly in patients with prosthetic restorations. This experimental study aimed to simulate five years of SPT with periodic PMPR near the luting gap of ceramic restorations using a rubber cup with polishing paste (RCP), air polishing with two different low-abrasive powders (LAPA-1: glycine powder, LAPA-2: erythritol powder), and non-professional mechanical cleaning (control group) to measure the extent of volume loss in the luting gap after baseline (∆V = Vbaseline-V1-5; in µm3). METHODS: Two operators randomly performed PMPR ten times for thirty seconds on one of four sides of 30 crown replicas fixed with glass-ionomer cement (CGIZ: n = 15) or adhesive bonding (CAB: n = 15). The replicas were separated in a template during PMPR, and afterward, cleaned for five seconds per side with a sonic brush under flowing water. The artificial aging process between two PMPRs simulated a 5-year SPT with two PMPRs per year. Profilometric measurements were performed at baseline and after each second PMPR to obtain the mean change of ∆V. The statistical evaluation of the data was carried out using nonparametric tests with Bonferroni correction applied for multiple tests. RESULTS: Ninety-six out of 120 sides could be included in the analysis. PMPR methods showed a loss of substance in the luting gap with a ∆V (mean(standard deviation)) of -4.35 × 106(4.8 × 106)µm3 versus 8.79 × 104(1.05 × 106)µm3 for control at V5 (p ≤ 0.001). No significant differences of ∆V1-5 values could be identified in the control (p > 0.05), whereat all PMPRs showed a significant increasing loss of substance per simulated year (p ≤ 0.001). Intergroup comparison identified LAPA-1 as having the highest significant loss of substance determined on CAB (∆V: -1.05 × 107 (7,2 × 106) µm3), followed by LAPA-2 on CAB (∆V: -6.29 × 106 (4,24 × 106) µm3), LAPA-1 on CGIZ (∆V: -4.15 × 106 (3,25 × 106) µm3), LAPA-2 on CGIZ (∆V: -3.0 × 106 (2,23 × 106) µm3), RCP on CAB (∆V: -1.86 × 106 (2,23 × 106) µm3) and CGIZ (∆V: -1.2 × 106 (1,31 × 106) µm3; p ≤ 0.001)). CONCLUSIONS: Within study limitations, all PMPRs caused a significantly higher loss of substance in the luting gap versus control without professional intervention, with the highest values in the CAB group for LAPA-1, LAPA-2 and RCP. Similar findings were observed for CGIZ, although the loss values were lower.

BACKGROUND: The purpose of the study is to analyse the effects of different inhaled asthma medications (IAMs) on the color change of dental restorative materials (DRMs). METHODS: In total, 192 samples were taken from six different DRMs: [Filtek Z550 (nanohybrid composite), Fusio Liquid Dentin (Self-adhering flowable composite), Filtek Ultimate (nanofilled flowable composite), Dyract XP (compomer), Fuji II LC (resin-modified glass ionomer), Fuji IX Fast (self-cured-packable glass ionomer), (n = 32)]. After the initial color values (CIELab) of DRMs were measured by using a spectrophotometer, each sample was exposed to the same IAMs via nebulizer according to the four different inhaled therapies and measurements were repeated on the 7th & 21st days. RESULTS: In all IAM groups, DRM with the least amount of ΔE was nanohybrid composite, while the highest ΔE was found in Fuji II LC. Among all experimental groups, only Fuji II LC which was administered the combined medication, exceeded the clinically unacceptable threshold (ΔE = 3.3) on 7th & 21st days. CONCLUSIONS: Consequently, important factors affecting the susceptibility to color stability are the type of IAMs, the administration time-dosage, and the type of DRMs.

PURPOSE: To evaluate and compare changes on the surface roughness of conventional and colored compomers used in pediatric dentistry caused by beverages frequently consumed by children. METHODS: 176 conventional and colored compomer discs were prepared. The discs were divided into four equal subgroups and incubated in different beverages: distilled water, milk, fruit juice, and cola. The surface roughness of the samples was measured and recorded on Days 1, 7, 14, 21, and 28. The data obtained were statistically analyzed. RESULTS: In distilled water and milk, the surface roughness of the conventional compomer was higher than the colored compomer after Day 7 (P< 0.05). In fruit juice and cola, the surface roughness of conventional and colored compomers was similar at all timepoints (P< 0.05). There was a significant difference between discs incubated in distilled water and milk, on Days 21 and 28 (P< 0.05). The colored compomer showed the highest roughness in cola on Day 1, whereas the conventional compomer showed the highest roughness in milk on Day 21. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE: Cola caused the highest surface roughness on the surface of colored compomers, whereas milk caused the highest surface roughness on conventional compomers.

BACKGROUND Several auxiliary features have been proposed to achieve sustainable retention for short-prepared dental crowns; however, achieving retention is challenging. This study aimed to assess the impact of increased total occlusal convergence and auxiliary preparation factors like box and groove on the retention form of short tooth preparations. MATERIAL AND METHODS Eighty resin machine-milled dies with a height of 3 mm and a deep chamfer margin of 1 mm were prepared to mimic the short-prepared molar. Initially, 2 teeth were prepared following the guidelines, and the total occlusal convergence was kept at 10° and 20°, respectively. Auxiliary features such as the proximal box and buccal groove were prepared on separate 20° dies. Eighty dies were prepared with 10 samples each for 10°, 20°, 20° with proximal box and 20° with buccal groove for zirconia (n=40) and metal crowns (n=40). Cementation was done with glass ionomer luting cement, and a pull-off test was conducted. Data were analyzed using one-way analysis of variance and post hoc fisher least significant difference test (P<0.05). RESULTS The highest mean was observed in the proximal box group with the metal crown (14.59), and the lowest in the group with 20° zirconia crowns (9.12). Within groups, the highest retentive values were found for the 20° taper with proximal box preparation; the lowest was for the 20° taper group. CONCLUSIONS Within the study limitations, it could be concluded that incorporating a proximal box or buccal groove in short tooth preparations with an increased total occlusal convergence improved retentive values.

OBJECTIVES: Zein-coated magnesium oxide nanoparticles (zMgO NPs) can potentially improve cement adaptation to the tooth-restoration interface, which would aid in minimizing marginal leakage and secondary caries. The aim of this study was to assess the effect of incorporating zMgO NPs on the adaptation of self-adhesive resin cement using cross-polarization optical coherence tomography (CP-OCT) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). METHODS: Resin inlays were fabricated to be cemented in Class-I cavities of extracted human molars. All specimens were randomly divided into five groups (n = 10), and the resin inlays were cemented using self-adhesive resin cement with various concentrations of zMgO NPs (0% [control], 0.3%, 0.5%, 1%, 2%). Characterization was done by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and SEM. The specimens were examined for interfacial adaptation under CP-OCT. Floor and wall adaptation measurements were analyzed by software on 20 B-scans, and samples were sectioned for interfacial measurement by SEM. RESULTS: Results for CP-OCT and SEM showed a statistically significant increase of adaptation in the floor and wall of resin cement filled with zMgO NPs compared to the control. The samples enhanced with 0.3% and 0.5% showed a statistically significantly better adaptation in floor and wall in CP-OCT and SEM. However, there was no significant difference between the 1%, 2%, and control groups for CP-OCT and SEM analysis. SIGNIFICANCE: The incorporation of zMgO NPs in self-adhesive resin cement can enhance the cement's properties by significantly improving its wall and floor adaptation.

OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to compare two types of bioactive additives which were strontium-containing fluorinated bioactive glass (SrBGF) or strontium-containing fluorapatite (SrFA) added to sol-gel derived glass ionomer cement (SGIC). The objective was to develop antibacterial and mineralisation properties, using bioactive additives, to minimize the occurrence of caries lesions in caries disease. METHODS: Synthesized SrBGF and SrFA nanoparticles were added to SGIC at 1 wt% concentration to improve antibacterial properties against S. mutans, promote remineralisation, and hASCs and hDPSCs viability. Surface roughness and ion-releasing behavior were also evaluated to clarify the effect on the materials. Antibacterial activity was measured via agar disc diffusion and bacterial adhesion. Remineralisation ability was assessed by applying the material to demineralised teeth and subjecting them to a 14-day pH cycle, followed by microCT and SEM-EDS analysis. RESULTS: The addition of SrFA into SGIC significantly improved its antibacterial property. SGIC modified with either SrBGF or SrFA additives could similarly induce apatite crystal precipitation onto demineralised dentin and increase dentin density, indicating its ability to remineralise dentin. Moreover, this study also showed that SGIC modified with SrBGF or SrFA additives had promising results on the in vitro cytotoxicity of hASC and hDPSC. SIGNIFICANT: SrFA has superior antibacterial property as compared to SrBGF while demonstrating equal remineralisation ability. Furthermore, the modified SGIC showed promising results in reducing the cytotoxicity of hASCs and hDPSCs, indicating its potential for managing caries.

OBJECTIVES: This study evaluated the resistance of S-PRG (Surface Pre-Reacted Glass-ionomer) composites and other restorative materials against erosive and abrasive challenges and their protective effect on enamel adjacent to the restorations. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Bovine enamel blocks were prepared and randomized into 12 groups, including 6 types of material, each of them subjected to erosion_e or erosion+abrasion_ea: Beautifil II (S-PRG); Beautifil Bulk Restorative (S-PRG); Filtek Z250 XT; Filtek Bulk Fill; EQUIA Forte; Riva Light Cure. Cavities were prepared in the middle of enamel blocks and restored with the materials. Initial profiling measurement was performed on the material and on adjacent enamel (100, 200, 300, 600 and 700 µm from the restoration margin). Palatal intraoral appliances with the restored enamel blocks were used by the volunteers (n = 10). During 5 days appliances were immersed in 2.5 % citric acid for 2 min; 6 × /day (erosion_e). For ea condition, blocks were brushed for 1 min after each acid immersion. Final profile assessment was performed. Data were analysed by two and three way ANOVA followed by Tukey's test (p < 0.05). RESULTS: Material wear: Riva Light Cure showed the highest wear followed by EQUIA Forte and then all resin composites, including the ones with S-PRG (p = 0.000). Enamel wear: there was significant interaction among type of restorative material, wear condition and distance (p = 0.014), enamel around materials showed similar wear (p = 0.983) and the enamel subjected to ea exhibited highest wear (p = 0.000). CONCLUSION: SPRG based composites showed resistance against erosive and abrasive challenges but were not able to protect enamel adjacent to the restorations. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE: S-PRG composites exhibit resistance to material wear comparable to resin composites. However, they have shown an inability to effectively protect the adjacent enamel under in situ erosive-abrasive conditions, despite the presence of mineral-loss-preventing ions surrounding materials.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate macroscopically and radiographically the behavior of four endodontic sealers submitted to high temperatures, with forensic purposes. METHODS: Sixty-four lower anterior teeth were included. All teeth were endodontically treated, and simulation of external cervical resorption (ECR) was performed. Half of the sample was filled with AH-Plus™ cement and had ECR sealed with Bio-C-Repair™. The other 32 teeth were filled with Bio-C-Sealer™ cement and had their respective ECR sealed with MTA-Repair™. Then, all teeth were introduced into a bovine bone block to simulate the alveolar bone. The teeth were submitted to incineration at temperatures of 600, 800, 1000, and 1140 °C. All teeth were radiographed before and after incineration. The pre-and post-incineration radiopacity of cements and dentin were evaluated using the ImageJ™ software and compared using a t-test for paired samples. RESULTS: It was possible to confirm color change and appearance of cracks in the tissues and dental materials tested, varying according to the temperature. Radiographically, it was observed that the dental crowns completely detached at 1000 ° and 1140 °C, and, only at 1140 °C, the roots showed cracks. Regarding the radiopacity, there was a significant difference in the shades of gray in AH-Plus™ when subjected to 1000 ° and 1140 °C, and at 600 ° and 1000 °C in Bio-C-Sealer™. In Bio-C-Repair™ and MTA-Repair™, a difference was observed at 600 ° and 1140 °C. CONCLUSIONS: There were macroscopic and radiographic alterations of the materials. This data is important in Forensic Dentistry and may contribute to identifying carbonized victims.
