RESUMO

PURPOSE: Dependency-related skin injuries (DRSI) occur in people who need a high level of support to carry out day-to-day activities. Owing to the ageing population, the number of people at risk of DRSI is increasing. Most wound care is performed by nurses in the community. This scoping review aimed to identify the extent of literature on nursing care for patients with or at risk of developing DRSI living in their own home. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A scoping review was conducted. RESULTS: A total of 28 studies met the inclusion criteria and four main themes emerged: features of the community setting; wound types, causes and management; prevention strategies around aetiology and holistic care; care management and local wound care. CONCLUSION: Although most wounds occur in and are treated in the community, there is a paucity of research on wounds in this setting. The care of patients with DRSI in the community is complex and prevention according to the individual aetiology of each lesion is the key factor in wound care.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: The purpose of this research study was to determine the effectiveness of an innovative online COVID-19 educational module among community health nursing students. DESIGN: Mixed-methods study. METHODS: The sample (N = 86) consisted of prelicensure and postlicensure community health nursing students, who completed a pretest, COVID-19 educational intervention, and posttest. FINDINGS: The majority of participants' scores increased from pretest to posttest, and most participants strongly agreed that the COVID-19 educational module was effective. Strategies to address vaccine hesitancy, information learned and found most helpful, and plans for application and utilization of this knowledge were revealed. CONCLUSIONS: An online COVID-19 community health nursing educational intervention was effective at improving participants' knowledge, confidence, and attitudes regarding COVID-19. CLINICAL EVIDENCE: Online COVID-19 community health nursing education was an effective strategy for increasing preparation for this pandemic and the format can be useful to utilize for future public health emergencies.

RESUMO

Community health nurses world-wide provide health promotion and preventative care, support and guidance as well as clinical care for people with long-term conditions or needing acute care at home and end-of-life care, across all age groups. The importance of health care in the community has been growing globally as health systems recognise both the economic and human need for people to remain in their communities rather than in hospital. Research in community nursing provides evidence to support policy, practice and education. This article describes the global contribution that the International Collaboration for Community Health Nursing makes towards disseminating evidence that could improve the lives and health of communities.

Background: Virtual reality (VR) simulation in nursing education, especially about non-acute care including community health, is an emerging learning strategy; more research is needed about its effectiveness. Purpose: This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of an innovative community health nursing VR simulation on prelicensure students' knowledge about social determinants of health and cultural competence, with a goal of enhancing students' preparation for practice. Methods: In a convergent mixed methods study, 100 prelicensure nursing students in a community health nursing course at a Midwestern U.S., urban, public university completed a pretest, a VR simulation, a posttest, and an evaluation. Pre- and posttests containing content questions adapted from leading community health nursing text faculty resources were used to assess learning, and the Simulation Effectiveness Tool-Modified (SET-M) was used to assess perceived effectiveness of the intervention. Results: The majority of participants' posttest scores were higher than their pretest scores. Most participants strongly agreed that the VR simulation was effective, and reported on new knowledge/skills learned, material found most helpful, and benefit to their nursing practice. Conclusions: The community health nursing VR simulation was effective at increasing participants' knowledge and their confidence in their knowledge and abilities.

BACKGROUND: Community-based nursing in recent years has received much attention from nursing schools in different countries as a suitable solution in response to existing and future problems and challenges, but there is yet no comprehensive and correct understanding of this concept and considering its importance, the present study was conducted to the aim of analyzing the concept of community-based nursing. METHODS: Concept analysis was done using Walker and Avant's 8-step approach. Nursing dictionary, Persian dictionary, research articles, journals and conferences articles, dissertations, thesis, books, and other sources related to the concept of research were investigated through search engines and available databases using the keywords of nursing, community-based, concept analysis and Walker and Avant from 1990 to 2023. Finally, 54 articles related to the concept were reviewed and analyzed. RESULTS: The results showed that community-based nursing has attributes such as individual-oriented/ family-oriented/ community-oriented, social partnership with the communities and stakeholders, social justice, and group and interprofessional cooperation, the community as the main activity setting, providing services based on cultural diversity, providing services according to the context, conditions and community needs, caring for individuals and families with health problems throughout life, responding to the community needs, community-based experiences and facing real-life issues in the context of community, using a problem-based and service-based approach, providing context-based care and considering factors affecting health. In this regard, borderline and related cases (community health nursing, community-oriented nursing, population-based nursing, and public health nursing) were also presented to clarify the concept. Antecedents of community-based nursing included: determining the position of community-based nursing, making infrastructure and structure, the partnership between university, hospital and community, identifying all settings, the presence of educators proficient in education, survey of community needs, having knowledge, communication and community-based skills, expanding the role of the nurse, stakeholders' attitude towards community-oriented nursing and management and financial support. Consequences of community-based nursing included: competence development in nurses, solving community-based nursing challenges, meeting the health needs of individuals, families and communities, social justice, and increasing access to health care services. CONCLUSION: The results of this study can provide an objective and understandable image of the use of community-based nurses and their education in practice. Conducting more quantitative and qualitative studies about community-based nursing is also recommended.

AIM: This study had two aims: to determine initial career intention of nursing students and to assess whether nursing education variables predict career intentions toward public health/community health nursing. BACKGROUND: Nursing graduates are expected to be prepared to work in community settings. However, there is uncertainty in whether students are attracted to these settings and whether nursing education is impactful in shaping career intention. METHOD: A cross-sectional survey targeted baccalaureate and accelerated students across Oregon. Analyses utilized descriptive statistics and multiple regression. RESULTS: Students reported most interest in acute care. Didactic and clinical learning were not related to intention to pursue a public health/community health career. The strongest predictor was career intention when starting nursing school. CONCLUSION: Students enter nursing school with largely fixed intentions. Educators need to develop greater prenursing outreach and understanding of the drivers toward public and community health to build curricula and passion for this area of nursing.

PURPOSE: To explore the consequences, challenges, and future directions based on community health nurses' experiences during COVID-19. DESIGN: Qualitative study. Four focus group interviews were conducted with 27 community health nurses. FINDINGS: Three major themes emerged: 1) Coordination of roles and duties, 2) Identifying deterioration of patients' health and increasing demand for visits, and 3) Changing service delivery strategies: a testing ground for new services. CONCLUSIONS: Community health nurses were essential public healthcare providers during the pandemic. The findings are informative for nurses and policy makers who can develop and suggest different services in the post-COVID era.

BACKGROUND: Virtual reality simulation in postlicensure nursing education, including community health, is an emerging instructional approach, and more research is needed on its effectiveness. The goal of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of an innovative, computer-based community health nursing virtual reality simulation among postlicensure nursing students. METHOD: This mixed methods study consisted of 67 postlicensure community health nursing students who completed a pretest, computer-based virtual reality simulation, and a posttest and evaluation. RESULTS: The majority of participant scores increased from pretest to posttest, and most participants agreed that the computer-based virtual reality simulation was effective; new knowledge and skills learned, the material that was found to be most helpful, and benefits to nursing practice were identified. CONCLUSION: This community health nursing computer-based virtual reality simulation was effective at increasing participants' knowledge and confidence with learning. OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study was to explore nursing students' experiences after completing community health nursing simulation encounters. METHODS: The study used a descriptive qualitative design. Through conventional content analysis, the research team analyzed the experiences of 73 nursing students after participating in community health nursing simulation encounters. The data come from nursing students' responses to three post-simulation qualitative questions. RESULTS: Nursing students identified both positive aspects (simulation as a great learning method, useful in understanding community health nurses' roles, faculty's role in facilitating an effective learning environment) and opportunities for improvement (needing for clear objectives, expectations, and roles). CONCLUSIONS: Community health nursing simulation encounters can be a powerful educational method to help students experience and understand the roles of community health nurses. IMPLICATIONS FOR INTERNATIONAL AUDIENCE: Augmentation of the pre-brief component will further improve students' simulation experiences.

RESUMO

Baccalaureate nursing education is moving to adopt the new American Association of Colleges of Nursing Essentials for Professional Nursing Education. As identified in two of the six domains of the essentials, graduates need to be prepared to address population health and utilize informatics and healthcare technologies. Community/public health nursing also has eight domains for generalist nurses linked to population health which will help prepare a skilled nursing workforce for the 21st century. The Institute for Healthcare Improvement's Triple Aim which evolved into the Quadruple Aim is focused on improving health outcomes within healthcare delivery. Through a literature review, a need for a Quadruple Aim model for nursing education was identified. Mirroring the Institute for Healthcare Improvement's Triple Aim for healthcare delivery, a Quadruple Aim for Nursing Education Model was developed. The model dimensions include (1) Population-focused Care, (2) Maximize Student Learning Experience, (3) Cost-effective Pedagogy, and (4) Nurse Educator Well-being. The Quadruple Aim for Nursing Education Model supports nursing education to prepare future nurses effectively and efficiently bridging population health concepts and issues with nursing informatics. Nurse educators are encouraged to utilize the model to transform nursing education.

Pressure ulcers are injuries to the skin requiring integrated care, particularly when patients are at home. Pressure ulcers have been a nursing concern for years, and several strategies have been proposed for its prevention and management. Nursing theory, which is essential for nursing practice, recommends plausible approaches to health problems. However, literature describing steps to integrate nursing theory into pressure ulcer care has not yet been explored. For this reason, this article discusses the six steps on how to apply nursing theory in community practice. A case study is also discussed to help gain a better understanding of these steps.

RESUMO

There is much interest in the UK, and elsewhere, in the Dutch Buurtzorg model of providing district nursing, and there a number of published, external evaluations of pilot projects. We are nurses who worked in one such pilot that used an adapted Buurtzorg model called neighbourhood nursing using neighbourhood care principles. This article reflects on our experience and describes how we organised ourselves and, our experiences of working in such ways as well as the challenges. This article also offers advice for others who are considering introducing such models.
