IMPORTANCE: Understanding the root cause of mental illness stigma is necessary to adopt effective management strategies. OBJECTIVE: To establish a stable and effective text-picture integration rating scale to predict public perspectives on mental illness and to examine its reliability and validity. DESIGN: Descriptive cross-sectional study using internet survey data. SETTING: Online. PARTICIPANTS: Two hundred volunteers. RESULTS: The 10-item the Text-Picture Integration Scale for Perspectives on Mental Illness was developed. The authors conducted data analysis using SPSS to evaluate the reliability and criterion-related validity of the Mental Health Literacy Scale (MHLS). The Text-Picture Integration Scale's item-level content validity index ranged from 0.83 to 1.00, and the scale-level content validity index was 0.97. The scale demonstrated acceptable reliability (Cronbach's α = .80). The mean value of individual items ranged from 3.18 to 4.48, and the mean total score was 39.44 (SD = 8.47). The Text-Picture Integration Scale exhibited satisfactory criterion-related validity with the MHLS (r = .76, p < .001). CONCLUSIONS AND RELEVANCE: Preliminary analyses support that the Text-Picture Integration Scale is a stable and effective rating scale to determine public perspectives on mental illness and is appropriate for evaluating destigmatization efforts. Plain-Language Summary: The study findings support the use of the Text-Picture Integration Scale as a stable and effective rating scale to determine public perspectives on mental illness. The scale is also appropriate for evaluating ways to address the stigmas that people associate with mental illness, which pose challenges for people in recovery. Occupational therapists can leverage their understanding of public perspectives on mental illness when choosing interventions to support the overall well-being of their clients with mental illness.

OBJECTIVE: The present study aims to explore the influencing factors of the scientific fitness literacy of nurses and provide a strategic basis for literacy improvement. METHODS: A questionnaire on the influencing factors of scientific fitness literacy of nurses was designed by the group conducting the present study; the questionnaire was based on the socioecology model and the questionnaire preparation method. The general data questionnaire and the questionnaire on the influencing factors of scientific fitness literacy of nurses were adopted to investigate nurses in tertiary hospitals in order to analyze and discuss the influencing factors of their scientific fitness literacy. RESULTS: (1) The questionnaire on the influencing factors of the scientific fitness literacy of nurses comprised five dimensions and 36 items. The overall item-content validity index was 0.833-1.000, the scale-content validity index was 0.974, and the overall Cronbach's α coefficient was 0.955; (2) the results of the pairwise Pearson correlation analysis showed that all five dimensions were positively correlated with the scientific fitness literacy of nurses; and (3) the results of the multiple linear regression analysis revealed that five dimensions, as well as the existence of exercise habits in daily life, had a significant impact on the scientific fitness literacy of nurses (P < 0.001). CONCLUSION: The factors influencing the scientific fitness literacy of nurses involved all levels of the socioecological system. The methods of improving the awareness of the scientific fitness of nurses and providing opportunities for scientific fitness activities via the hospital played a critical role in literacy improvement. However, the lack of professional guidance and an atmosphere promoting scientific fitness might hinder literacy improvement.

BACKGROUND: The gut microbiota is a key determinant of long-term health. Promoting maternal health literacy may enhance children well-being. Aim of the present study was to assess gut microbiota-related health literacy of Italian women and identify potential gaps in awareness. METHODS: A cross-sectional survey study was conducted using an online questionnaire (17 questions) on determinants and long-term impact of infant gut microbiota. The survey targeted Italian pregnant women and mothers of children under 2 years old, and was distributed through various social media channels between September 28th and November 15th, 2022. A total score was calculated as the sum of positive answers. Data on demographics, pregnancy status, and pre-existing knowledge of the infant gut microbiota were also collected. Descriptive and inferential statistics were applied. RESULTS: The questionnaire was completed by 1076 women. Median total score was 9 [7-11]. The 81.7% of respondents declared prior knowledge of the gut microbiota. The internet was among the most commonly cited primary sources of information. Independent predictors of total score were having a university degree (B = 0.656, p = 0.002) and prior knowledge (B = 2.246, p < 0.001). Conversely, older age was associated with lower total scores (B = -0.092, p < 0.001). The least known determinants of infant gut microbiota were gestational BMI, prematurity, mode of delivery and NICU stay. Pregnant women failed to recognize the role of breastfeeding in the development of infant gut microbiota more frequently than non-pregnant women. The 97.5% of participants reported increased interest in the gut microbiota, with heightened interest associated with prior knowledge. CONCLUSIONS: Our study revealed a moderate level of knowledge about infant gut microbiota among respondents, emphasizing the positive impact of prior knowledge on understanding and interest. Targeted educational interventions are needed to address awareness gaps, especially concerning the influence of breastfeeding on infant gut microbiota. Healthcare providers have the potential to enhance women's knowledge and awareness of this topic.

Limited health literacy is high among patients with chronic kidney disease, which can pose challenges in health care. Evidence of health literacy in Indonesia, particularly regarding patients undergoing hemodialysis, is lacking. In this study, we aimed to explore health literacy in adult patients undergoing maintenance hemodialysis. An inductive qualitative study was conducted. Individual semi-structured interviews were conducted with 10 adult patients undergoing hemodialysis, four family caregivers, and four healthcare professionals. Interviews were transcribed verbatim and analyzed thematically. Three themes emerged from the data: "Trying to understand the illness," "searching and obtaining health information," and "applying health information." Understanding and accepting the illness included raising awareness of the changes in their lives and accepting these changes. Participants actively sought information from healthcare professionals and other sources and used it carefully. Behavioral changes included patients' adherence to therapy, although participants often felt bored during the illness trajectory. Understanding the illness and being willing to seek and critically evaluate health information before implementing it are important. These aspects may affect patient outcomes and require further intervention and research.

BACKGROUND: Mothers need a competent electronic health literacy (eHL) skill for beneficial gains for the health of their children in the virtual environment, which is a new health platform. We predict that a competent eHL of mothers who play a central role in early childhood will positively affect the health of their children. This study aimed to determine the level of eHL of mothers of young children and investigate the relationship between mothers' eHL and early childhood development (ECD) and early parenting practices (EPP). METHODS: This cross-sectional study was conducted on mothers with children aged 36-59 months using eHealth. Sociodemographic and personal characteristics form, Early Childhood Development Module and eHealth Literacy Scale were administered to the participating mothers. RESULTS: The data from 440 mother-child pairs were analysed. Children of mothers with sufficient eHL levels were more likely to be Early Childhood Development Index (ECDI)-on-track, adjusted odds ratio (AOR), 95% confidence interval (CI): 2.16 (1.29-3.61); have adequate support in learning, AOR (%95 CI): 3.23 (1.69-6.18); and have adequate daily meals and snacks, AOR (%95 CI): 2.43 (1.56-3.78). CONCLUSION: These results revealed that there is a need for interventions that will contribute to child health by improving mothers' eHL levels.

BACKGROUND: Dyslipidemia management is a cornerstone in cardiovascular disease prevention and relies heavily on patient adherence to lifestyle modifications and medications. Numerous cholesterol patient education materials are available online, but it remains unclear whether these resources are suitable for the majority of North American adults given the prevalence of low health literacy. This review aimed to (1) identify printable cholesterol patient education materials through an online search, and (2) evaluate the readability, understandability, and actionability of each resource to determine its utility in practice. METHODS AND RESULTS: We searched the MEDLINE database for peer-reviewed educational materials and the websites of Canadian and American national health organizations for gray literature. Readability was measured using the Flesch-Kincaid Grade Level, and scores between fifth- and sixth-grade reading levels were considered adequate. Understandability and actionability were scored using the Patient Education Materials Assessment Tool and categorized as superior (>80%), adequate (50%-70%), or inadequate (<50%). Our search yielded 91 results that were screened for eligibility. Among the 22 educational materials included in the study, 15 were identified through MEDLINE, and 7 were from websites. The readability across all materials averaged an 11th-grade reading level (Flesch-Kincaid Grade Level=11.9±2.59). The mean±SD understandability and actionability scores were 82.8±6.58% and 40.9±28.60%, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: The readability of online cholesterol patient education materials consistently exceeds the health literacy level of the average North American adult. Many resources also inadequately describe action items for individuals to self-manage their cholesterol, representing an implementation gap in cardiovascular disease prevention.

The mortality rate in intensive care units (ICUs) is notably high, with patients often relying on surrogates for critical medical decisions due to their compromised state. This paper provides a comprehensive overview of eHealth. The challenges of applying eHealth tools, including economic disparities and information inaccuracies are addressed. This study then introduces eHealth literacy and the assessment tools to evaluate users' capability and literacy levels in using eHealth resources. A clinical scenario involving surrogate decision-making is presented. This simulated case involves a patient with a hemorrhagic stroke who has lost consciousness and requires medical procedures such as tracheostomy. However, due to the medical surrogate's lack of familiarity with eHealth devices and limited literacy in using eHealth resources, difficulties arise in assisting the patient in making medical decisions. This scenario highlights challenges related to eHealth literacy and solution strategies are proposed. In conclusion, effective ICU decision-making with eHealth tools requires a careful balance between efficiency with inclusivity. Tailoring communication strategies and providing diverse materials are essential for effective eHealth decision resources in the ICU setting. Health professionals should adopt a patient-centered approach to enhance the decision-making experience, particularly for individuals with limited eHealth literacy.

INTRODUCTION: Mental Health Literacy (MHL) is important for improving mental health and reducing inequities in treatment. The Mental Health Literacy Scale (MHLS) is a valid and reliable assessment tool for MHL. This systematic review will examine and compare the measurement properties of the MHLS in different languages, enabling academics, clinicians and policymakers to make informed judgements regarding its use in assessments. METHODS AND ANALYSIS: The review will adhere to the COnsensus-based Standards for the selection of health Measurement INstruments (COSMIN) methodology for systematic reviews of patient-reported outcome measures and the Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI) Manual for Evidence Synthesis and will be presented following the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic reviews and Meta-Analysis 2020 checklist. The review will be conducted in four stages, including an initial search confined to PubMed, a search of electronic scientific databases PsycINFO, CINAHL, Scopus, MEDLINE, Embase (Elsevier), PubMed (NLM) and ERIC, an examination of the reference lists of all papers to locate relevant publications and finally contacting the MHLS original author to identify validation studies that the searches will not retrieve. These phases will assist us in locating studies that evaluate the measurement properties of MHLS across various populations, demographics and contexts. The search will focus on articles published in English between May 2015 and December 2023. The methodological quality of the studies will be evaluated using the COSMIN Risk of Bias checklist, and a comprehensive qualitative and quantitative data synthesis will be performed. ETHICS AND DISSEMINATION: Ethics approval is not required. The publication will be in peer-reviewed journals and presented at national and international conferences. Background: This study aimed to examine the relationship between health literacy and health-related quality of life in older adults. Methods: A cross-sectional survey design was used. We used a self-administered questionnaire to assess sociodemographic factors of older adults, the Chinese Citizen Health Literacy Questionnaire (HLQC) and the 36-item Chinese version of the Short Form 36 (SF-36) to measure health literacy and quality of life, respectively, among older adults. Between September 2011 and June 2012, information was collected from 1,396 older adults in 44 nursing homes in four cities through face-to-face interviews. Results: The mean health literacy level of older adults in nursing homes was relatively low (71.74 ± 28.35). Health-related quality of life scores were moderate (104.77 ± 16.92). There were statistically significant differences in the effects of health literacy, education level, former occupation (professional), marital status (widowed) and race on health-related quality of life. Conclusion: Improving health literacy is considered an important intervention to promote health-related quality of life in older adults in nursing homes.

Health literacy (HL) is the ability of individuals to access, understand and use health information to improve their health. It is a multidimensional and contextual concept, whose definition has been enriched over time. Considered both as a health risk factor and a skill to be developed by individuals, HL also depends on the healthcare system in which patients have to navigate, and on healthcare professionals' awareness of this concept. In order to promote shared decision-making and thus individual empowerment in the healthcare, HL should be at the core of the concerns of nephrology care teams.


La littératie en santé (LS) est la capacité d'un individu à accéder à des informations en santé, à les comprendre et à les utiliser pour améliorer son état de santé. Il s'agit d'un concept pluridimensionnel et contextuel dont la définition s'est enrichie au fil du temps. Considérée à la fois comme un facteur de risque pour la santé et une aptitude à développer chez les individus, la LS dépend également du système de santé dans lequel les patients doivent naviguer et de la sensibilisation des professionnels de santé à ce concept. Afin de favoriser la décision partagée et ainsi l'émancipation des individus en matière de santé, la LS devrait être au cœur des préoccupations des équipes de néphrologie.

Enhanced health literacy in children has been empirically linked to better health outcomes over the long term; however, few interventions have been shown to improve health literacy. In this context, we investigate whether large language models (LLMs) can serve as a medium to improve health literacy in children. We tested pediatric conditions using 26 different prompts in ChatGPT-3.5, ChatGPT-4, Microsoft Bing, and Google Bard (now known as Google Gemini). The primary outcome measurement was the reading grade level (RGL) of output as assessed by Gunning Fog, Flesch-Kincaid Grade Level, Automated Readability Index, and Coleman-Liau indices. Word counts were also assessed. Across all models, output for basic prompts such as "Explain" and "What is (are)," were at, or exceeded, the tenth-grade RGL. When prompts were specified to explain conditions from the first- to twelfth-grade level, we found that LLMs had varying abilities to tailor responses based on grade level. ChatGPT-3.5 provided responses that ranged from the seventh-grade to college freshmen RGL while ChatGPT-4 outputted responses from the tenth-grade to the college senior RGL. Microsoft Bing provided responses from the ninth- to eleventh-grade RGL while Google Bard provided responses from the seventh- to tenth-grade RGL. LLMs face challenges in crafting outputs below a sixth-grade RGL. However, their capability to modify outputs above this threshold, provides a potential mechanism for adolescents to explore, understand, and engage with information regarding their health conditions, spanning from simple to complex terms. Future studies are needed to verify the accuracy and efficacy of these tools.

BACKGROUND: The first 3 years of life offer an opportunity to prevent allergic diseases. Pediatricians are an important source of health information for parents. However, a certain degree of health literacy is necessary to understand, appraise, and apply preventive behavior, which can be supported by health literacy (HL) sensitive consultations and a HL friendly environment. OBJECTIVE: In this study, we want to shed light on how pediatricians in outpatient care in Germany advise on early childhood allergy prevention (ECAP) and how they consider parental HL. METHODS: We conducted 19 semi-standardized telephone interviews with pediatricians from North-Rhine-Westphalia and Bavaria. The interviews were audio-recorded, transcribed, pseudonymized, and subjected to content analysis. KEY RESULTS: Current ECAP recommendations were well known among our sample. Despite the shift of evidence from avoidance of allergens toward early exposure, providing advice on ECAP was considered non-controversial and it was widely assumed that recommendations were easy to understand and apply for parents. However, ECAP was treated as an implicit topic resonating among others like infant nutrition and hygiene. Regarding HL, our interview partners were not aware of HL as a concept. However, they deemed it necessary to somehow assess parental information level and ability to understand provided information. Formal HL screening was not applied, but implicit strategies based on intuition and experience. Concerning effective HL-sensitive communication techniques, interviewees named the adaptation of language and visual support of explanations. More advanced techniques like Teach Back were considered too time-consuming. Medical assistants were considered important in providing an HL-sensitive environment. Time constraints and the high amount of information were considered major barriers regarding HL-sensitive ECAP counseling. CONCLUSION: It seems warranted to enhance professional education and training for pediatricians in HL and HL-sensitive communication, to reach all parents with HL-sensitive ECAP counseling. PLAIN LANGUAGE SUMMARY: We asked pediatricians how they advise parents on prevention of allergy in children. We found that pediatricians were well aware of the recommendations on allergy prevention, but they did not pass on all the information to parents. The HL of parents (that is the ability to find, understand, appraise, and apply health information) was not an important issue for the doctors.

BACKGROUND: The workforce is an organization's most important asset, and ensuring their health and safety is crucial for achieving the organization's mission and goals. OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to design and validate a health literacy tool for COVID-19 among Iranian workers. METHODS: This cross-sectional study involved a total of 201 participants. A personal information questionnaire was administered, and The Health Literacy Assessment (HLA) Tool was used to collect data specifically related to COVID-19. The HLA for COVID-19 was designed and developed, and the validity of the tool was evaluated through face, content, convergent, and construct validity analyses. To examine convergent validity, the Perceived Stress Scale was used. The reliability of the questionnaire was assessed using internal consistency measures, such as Cronbach's alpha coefficient. KEY RESULTS: The mean content validity index was 0.93, indicating high content validity. Confirmatory factor analysis results supported the five-dimensional structure of the tool. Significant correlations were found between the HLA for COVID-19 and perceived stress levels. The Cronbach's alpha coefficient for all items was 0.84, indicating high internal consistency. CONCLUSION: The HLA for COVID-19 is a concise, reliable tool for measuring health literacy related to COVID-19 among Iranian workers. Assessing COVID-19 health literacy in this population can be useful in evaluating the effectiveness of government officials, the media, and the medical and scientific community in providing necessary information. Introduction: Farmers are vulnerable to adverse health effects from pesticide exposure due to their health literacy (HL). Therefore, this study aims to investigate HL among farmers in four main regions of Thailand, investigating socio-demographics, agricultural, and personal protective factors to their HL. Methods: This cross-sectional design study was conducted on 4,035 farmers from January to July 2023. The European Health Literacy Survey Questionnaire-47 items were used to measure HL. Results: Thai farmers had a mean HL score of 34.7 ± 8.7, and the farmers in the North region of Thailand had the highest frequency of limited HL (75.8%). Socio-demographic factors that were associated with HL included gender, region of living, marital status, education level, co-morbidity, and number of family members. Agricultural factors associated with HL included planting status, working hours on farm, spraying pesticides, harvesting crops, pesticide use of >1 type, access information from government officers, access information from posters/brochures, information from online multimedia, and access information from neighbors. Personal protective factors that were associated with HL included wearing a hat, goggles, a rubber apron, and a long-sleeved shirt. Discussion: Our study recommends that strategies and interventions to enhance the HL of farmers should be focused on the target populations, which include men, widows, or divorced, those with low levels of education, those who have co-morbidities, and those who applied pesticides of more than 1 type and improper personal protective equipment (PPE) use. The primary emphasis needs to be on the North region of Thailand, making that the target area to improve health equity in Thailand. These efforts would enhance the HL of farmers and sustainably improve pesticide safety behavior. Additionally, there is an urgent need for supportive measures aimed at altering on-farm practices and promoting education on alternative pest management strategies, particularly non-chemical crop protection, to ensure sustainable agriculture.

However, sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) continues to have among the lowest levels of ANC receipt globally, with half of mothers not meeting the WHO minimum recommendation of at least four visits. Increasing ANC coverage will require not only directly reducing geographic and financial barriers to care but also addressing the social determinants of health that shape access. Among those with the greatest potential for impact is maternal education: past research has documented a relationship between higher educational attainment and antenatal healthcare access, as well as related outcomes like health literacy and autonomy in health decision-making. Yet little causal evidence exists about whether changing educational policies can improve ANC coverage. This study fills this research gap by investigating the impact of national-level policies that eliminate tuition fees for lower secondary education in SSA on the number of ANC visits. METHODS: To estimate the effect of women's exposure to tuition-free education policies at the primary and lower secondary levels on their ANC visits, a difference-in-difference methodology was employed. This analysis leverages the variation in the timing of education policies across nine SSA countries. RESULTS: Exposure to tuition-free primary and lower secondary education is associated with improvements in the number of ANC visits, increasing the share of women meeting the WHO recommendation of at least four ANC visits by 6-14%. Moreover, the impact of both education policies combined is greater than that of tuition-free primary education alone. However, the effects vary across individual treatment countries, suggesting the need for further investigation into country-specific dynamics. CONCLUSIONS: The findings of this study have significant implications for policymakers and stakeholders seeking to improve ANC coverage. Removing the tuition barrier at the secondary level has shown to be a powerful strategy for advancing health outcomes and educational attainment. As governments across Africa consider eliminating tuition fees at the secondary level, this study provides valuable evidence about the impacts on reproductive health outcomes. While investing in free education requires initial investment, the long-term benefits for both human development and economic growth far outweigh the costs.

BACKGROUND: Stress impacts healthy behaviours and may influence life and health-related quality of life (HRQOL). A stressful event occurred when the COVID-19 pandemic hit in March 2020. The present study aims to explore possible gender differences in stress, psychosocial factors (self-efficacy, self-esteem, loneliness), pain, HL, and HRQOL in parents of adolescents one year into the COVID-19 pandemic, and to explore possible associations between gender, demographic and psychosocial factors, pain, HL, and HRQOL. METHODS: Parents of adolescents aged 16-17 took part in the study from January to February 2021, when the COVID-19 pandemic was ongoing. Data on socio-demographics, stress, self-efficacy, self-esteem, pain, HL, loneliness, and HRQOL were collected. HRQOL was assessed using RAND-36. RESULTS: Among the 320 parents from the general population, the mean age was 47.6 (standard deviation (SD) = 4.6) years, 81% were mothers, 79% were married or cohabiting, 81% had a university degree, and the majority worked full time (78%) or part time (13%). The average pain score was low, 0.48 (95% CI [0.43-0.54]). However, 50% of the parents reported persistent pain and more mothers reported persistent pain compared to fathers (53% vs. 37%). The parents' mean (SD) score for RAND-36 was 52.1 (95% CI [51.2-53.0]) for the physical component summary (PCS) score and 51.0 (95% CI [50.0-52.1]) for the mental component summary (MCS) score. Mothers reported significantly lower scores for all the eight RAND-36 domains and the PCS and MCS scores. Adjusting for gender, age, living condition, education, pain, HL, self-efficacy and loneliness, we revealed no associations between stress and RAND-36-PCS. University education of four years or more was positively associated (B = 3.29, 95% CI: [0.78-5.80]) with RAND-36-PCS, while persistent pain was negatively associated (B = -7.13, CI: [-9.20- -5.06]). We identified a strong negative association between RAND-36-MCS and stress (B = -43.11, CI: [-48.83- -37.38]) and a positive association with older age (B = 0.21, CI: [ 0.04, 0.39)]. CONCLUSION: One year into the COVID-19 pandemic, we identified a strong negative association between stress and mental HRQOL, while pain was strongly negatively associated with physical HRQOL.

Socioeconomic inequalities in health persist in Spain. The DDHealth project aims to address two timely innovative aspects that have been postulated to contribute to socioeconomic inequalities in health. DDHealth aims to address two innovative and timely aspects that have been proposed to contribute to socioeconomic health inequalities. The first one is the socioeconomic digital divide, which refers to the greater capabilities and opportunities to access technology and use the internet among higher social classes compared to lower ones. The second aspect is health literacy, which refers to individuals' capacity to meet and understand the complex demands of health promotion and maintenance in modern society. The study conducted over 2,000 interviews among residents in Spain aged between fifty and seventy-nine years old from March to April 2022, using a computer-assisted telephone interviewing (CATI) approach. The questionnaire comprises four different modules: sociodemographic; digital divide; health; health literacy. The anonymized data are available through the following link: https://dataverse.csuc.cat/dataset.xhtml?persistentId=doi:10.34810/data765. DDHealth enables addressing innovative dimensions concerning the social determinants of health in Spain. The data are available to external researchers for scientific purposes upon request of a reasonable research proposal.


Las desigualdades socioeconómicas en salud persisten en España. La encuesta DDHealth se propone para dar respuesta a parte de las razones que explican las desigualdades socioeconómicas en salud. DDHealth pretende abordar dos aspectos innovadores y oportunos que se ha postulado que contribuyen a las desigualdades socioeconómicas en salud. El primero es la brecha digital socioeconómica, que se refiere a que las capacidades y posibilidades de acceder a la tecnología y usar internet son mayores entre las clases sociales altas en comparación con las bajas. La segunda es la alfabetización sanitaria, que se refiere a la capacidad de los individuos para satisfacer y comprender las complejas demandas de promoción y mantenimiento de la salud en la sociedad moderna. El estudio llevó a cabo más de 2.000 entrevistas entre residentes en España de entre cincuenta y setenta y nueve años de edad entre marzo y abril de 2022, utilizando un enfoque de entrevista telefónica asistida por ordenador (CATI). El cuestionario tiene cuatro módulos diferentes: sociodemográfico; brecha digital; salud; alfabetización sanitaria. The coronavirus pandemic has contributed to increasing the responsibility of school principals for the health of all school community members. Moreover, evidence confirms the significant role of school principals' health literacy (HL) for health promotion in schools. Therefore, the presented study aims to evaluate the associations between Polish school principals HL and the implementation of the Health Promoting School (HPS) approach in Polish schools. The present study was conducted as part of an international survey on the global COVID-HL network (www.covid-hl.eu) between June 2021 and December 2021. Three subscales of the HPS were considered and an exploratory analysis were used in this study. Associations between the median split of each subscale of HPS (outcome) and health literacy (predictor) were performed using logistic regression. Research results showed that the highest level of HPS implementation was directed at pupils. Principals perceived themselves as having the highest HL on the 'accessibility' subscale and these respondents had significantly higher odds of implementing learning opportunities for students. The study suggests that principals with adequate HL may be more likely to effectively implement HPS strategies in schools. This research could provide insights into the complex interplay between HL and the HPS approach and inform the development of more effective strategies for promoting health and HL in schools.

INTRODUCTION: This study aims to evaluate health literacy (HL) in geriatric orthopaedic trauma patients and their families as it relates to their post-acute care (PAC) in skilled nursing facilities (SNFs) and inpatient rehabilitation facilities (IRFs). METHODS: This nonrandomized controlled clinical trial included patients aged 65 years and older treated for acute fracture at a Level 1 trauma center and discharged to either IRF or SNF. First 106 patients enrolled served as the control group and received standard discharge instructions. The second 101 patients were given a set of oral and written instructions regarding PAC detailing important questions to ask upon arrival to their facility. RESULTS: The mean HL score for all patients/families was 2.4 out of 5. No significant difference was noted in HL scores (2.4 versus 2.3) or median LOS (22 versus 28 days) between the control and intervention groups. Family involvement (68%) slightly improved HL scores (2.6 versus 1.9, P < 0.001). Patients discharged to IRF had better HL scores (3.4 versus 2.3, P < 0.001), shorter LOS (median 15 vs 30 days, P < 0.001), and trended toward improved knowledge of discharge goals (48.1% versus 35.6%) than those in SNF. CONCLUSION: System-wide solutions are necessary to improve geriatric HL and optimize outcomes in orthopaedic trauma.
