RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Based on current and future research priorities to inform Ph.D. education, emerging and priority areas were developed through the Idea Festival Advisory Committee of the Council for the Advancement of Nursing Science. PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to examine the bibliographic, methodologic, study topic characteristics, and emerging and priority areas of two randomly selected samples of nursing doctoral dissertations from the Proquest Digital Dissertations and Theses database between January 2017 and September 2018. METHODS: Using human- (N = 101) and computer-coding (N = 242), we analyzed text data using descriptive statistics and data visualization. FINDINGS: Health behavior (32.7%) and quantitative sciences (17.8%) were the most common emerging and priority areas, and translation science and -omics/microbiome were absent. Health, practice, education, and leadership were four study topic themes. DISCUSSION: This approach may serve as a metric for the state of Ph.D. nursing education. A replication study is recommended in three to five years.

RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: Use of EMDR in work with addicts is described mainly through case studies, and Hase, Schallmayer and Sack (2008) examined experimentally effect of EMDR in the treatment of alcohol addicts and found a significant decrease of cravings for addicts who had , next to the standard treatment, also EMDR therapy, compared to a group that had only standard treatment. To examine efficiency of EMDR therapy in the treatment of opiates addicts. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: In research is applied group experimental scheme with a control group and measurement before and after treatment and six months after treatment. The control group had standard treatment, and the experimental group had a standard treatment plus EMDR treatment, ie, four sessions of EMDR treatment. The session lasts 60 minutes. In the research following instruments were applied: Pompidou, DUDIT-E, LDQ, OCDS, DASS 21 Rosenberg's Self-Esteem Scale. In the processing of preliminary results, descriptive statistics is used. RESULTS: The research began on September 8, 2017. Until October 2018, 24 participants were included. Results of measurements for 20 participants were presented (10 from the control and 10 from the experimental group). In abstract is used CravEx Michal Hase protocol. The results indicate a higher number of visits to the therapeutic community in the experimental group, increase of self-esteem in both groups but a larger range in the experimental group, a higher self-evaluation of addiction in an experimental group, decrease in PAS attractiveness for both groups but slightly better results in the experimental group, especially in the self-assessment of the negative effects of PAS, as well as a larger increase in the motivational index of the experimental group at another measurement. CONCLUSION: Preliminary results indicate the effects of EMDR use, but since measures of descriptive statistics were used and as a small sample, there should be caution with the results.

RESUMO

This commentary discusses the increase of the number of finished PhD-theses in the Netherlands among young medical doctors. I discuss their motivation, engagement, the lack of mentoring and the mental health symptoms that are highly prevalent among Dutch PhD students in university medical centers. As a consequence, the abovementioned factors may have a detrimental impact on the validity and integrity of research results. Furthermore, I discuss how the current academic hierarchy is shaping academic careers and dictating publication practices. PhD students are pivotal in fulfilling academic dreams of seniors by writing a considerable number of publications that help senior researchers increase their scientific output, advance their careers and help them to get tenured. I suggest that we should invest in sufficient, effective and responsible supervision and mentoring and should train our supervisors to become a responsible role model for their PhD students. For this we need different performance indicators, and more time and skills for seniors to invest in PhD students. As a result, supervisors will become more equipped and engaged in responsible supervision.

RESUMO

The year 2019 saw nursing science become an official discipline in France, following the academization process initiated in 2009. Although nurses did not wait for this breakthrough to embark on doctoral-level courses, the absence of a dedicated academic nursing pathway has meant that it has not been possible to gain an overall picture of the theses written by nurses in French universities. The aim of this contribution is to compile an inventory of these theses by identifying the disciplinary fields in which the nurses defended them, as well as the preferred methodological approaches adopted. Following a computerized search using various databases, 132 theses were identified spanning a forty-year period, with a significant increase over the last ten years. Eighty-four percent of these doctoral theses were defended in the disciplines of humanities and social sciences, with a very large proportion in education sciences. Qualitative methods were preferred, with investigations that used interviews. The number of theses in the biological and health sciences has seen a recent increase. This inventory provides a benchmark for the doctoral output of nurses at a pivotal point in their professional history.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: The COVID-19 pandemic closed university campuses across the country. Nurse educators were challenged to develop innovative solutions for students to complete course requirements. The on-campus poster session used by a college of nursing as a scholarly forum for dissemination of all Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) student final projects was cancelled due to the pandemic. METHOD: Nurse educators developed and implemented an interactive, synchronous virtual session using the Zoom Video Communications platform. RESULTS: Twelve virtual sessions were held, and 73 students presented DNP project posters. More than 150 students and faculty attended the virtual poster sessions. Students and faculty had positive feedback regarding the virtual format. Student presentations were academically rigorous, and audiences engaged in robust discussion with DNP students. CONCLUSION: The virtual platform was successfully used for an interactive presentation by DNP student and nursing faculty participants. This format may be especially valuable for use of scholarship dissemination by distance learning programs. [J Nurs Educ. 2020;59(12):697-700.].

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Using a theoretical framework is often viewed as laborious or unnecessary for higher degree research projects. However, considering research problems through the lens of a theoretical framework can provide a structure for students to focus their research questions and produce findings that are more likely to address the research problem. AIM: To explain the utility of a theoretical framework and demonstrate the inclusion of a theoretical framework - deterrence theory - in a research project exploring plagiarism in nursing education. DISCUSSION: The experiences of a higher degree research student provided insight into the inclusion of a theoretical framework in a research plan. The benefits of this process are highlighted so other students can appreciate the importance of this process to their research plan and findings. CONCLUSION: A framework can add value to the overall research plan, from developing the research question through to the analysis and presentation of research findings. Fundamentally, frameworks provide a map for a study, providing a rationale for the development of the research questions or research hypothesis. A theoretical framework brings cohesion to the research project by linking the research questions and providing 'intellectual bins' for data analysis and presentation of research findings. IMPLICATIONS FOR PRACTICE: This article may assist higher degree research students in recognising the benefits of using a theoretical framework and provides an example of a 'real-life' application in a research project. The authors argue that theoretical frameworks can strengthen the likelihood that the research has produced meaningful findings that have addressed the research problem.

RESUMO

The research requirement for South African specialist registration offers opportunities and challenges. For some clinicians it may spark a lifelong interest in clinical investigation, while for many others it may provide a potential publication opportunity. Integrating the specific requirements of an MMed mini-dissertation with those of standard medical publications can be difficult for first-time authors and their supervisors; published guidance caters to full-length laboratory Master's or doctoral research. We suggest that research is more likely to be publishable if it is locally relevant, has a clear clinical message and is coherently presented.

RESUMO

Maximising research productivity is a major focus for universities world-wide. Graduate research programs are an important driver of research outputs. Choosing students with the greatest likelihood of success is considered a key part of improving research outcomes. There has been little empirical investigation of what factors drive the outcomes from a student's PhD and whether ranking procedures are effective in student selection. Here we show that, the research environment had a decisive influence: students who conducted research in one of the University's priority research areas and who had experienced, research-intensive, supervisors had significantly better outcomes from their PhD in terms of number of manuscripts published, citations, average impact factor of journals published in, and reduced attrition rates. In contrast, students' previous academic outcomes and research training was unrelated to outcomes. Furthermore, students who received a scholarship to support their studies generated significantly more publications in higher impact journals, their work was cited more often and they were less likely to withdraw from their PhD. The findings suggest that experienced supervisors researching in a priority research area facilitate PhD student productivity. The findings question the utility of assigning PhD scholarships solely on the basis of student academic merit, once minimum entry requirements are met. Given that citations, publication numbers and publications in higher ranked journals drive university rankings, and that publications from PhD student contribute approximately one-third of all research outputs from universities, strengthening research infrastructure and supervision teams may be more important considerations for maximising the contribution of PhD students to a university's international standing.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: The recent amendment to the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) Form 57 MED allows specialist registration on publication of the compulsory MMed research assignment in an accredited journal. No data exist on the conversion rate of MMed dissertations to publication. OBJECTIVES: To establish conversion rates of MMed dissertations to accredited publications. Associated variables arising from the publishing exercise were also investigated. METHODS: A total of 309 MMed dissertations, submitted between 1996 and 2017, were downloaded from the public domain. Each dissertation was recorded as to format, submission year, awarding university and clinical discipline. Electronic searches determined publication outcomes. Journal title, accreditation status, year of publication, registrar position on author ranking and publication type were extracted for each output. Descriptive analysis was undertaken and, where appropriate, Fisher's exact test at p>0.05 was used to establish statistical significance. RESULTS: A total of 116 dissertations were published at an overall conversion rate of 37.5%, culminating in 136 outputs. Publication-ready dissertations had a significantly higher conversion rate (60.3%) than monographs (30.5%) (p>0.0001). All but 6 of the 80 publishing journals were accredited. SAMJ was the journal of choice for 13% of papers. The registrar was the first author in the majority of publications. In the case of monographs, 66% were published after dissertation submission compared with 50% of publication-ready formats. CONCLUSIONS: Conversion of the South African MMed dissertation into a journal-accredited scientific article was achieved in 60.3% of publication-ready-format submissions, suggesting that the HPCSA amendment facilitating specialist registration is attainable. Retrospective reviews of dissertations provide valuable insights to improve understanding of the contentious issue of the registrar research requirement that permits specialist registration.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: It is important for researchers to be open and transparent about the relationship between themselves and the subjects of their enquiry. Reflexivity enables them to do this, but although there is much guidance in the literature about reflexivity in general, there is little guidance for PhD candidates on including it in their theses. AIM: To provide a practical illustration of how researchers can evidence reflexivity in their theses. DISCUSSION: The author presents the reflexive stance and journey she made when completing a PhD study that used constructivist grounded theory. It predominantly depicts the influences on the choices and decisions she made, so the reader can make sense of the journey she undertook. The author depicts how she began her journey as a novice nurse researcher and concluded it as a fully fledged researcher. CONCLUSION: There has been much debate about how to integrate reflexivity in the context of a particular study. This article highlights the importance of reflexivity in research and uses excerpts from the author's thesis to illustrate how it can be presented in a thesis. IMPLICATIONS FOR PRACTICE: The article provides a guide and questions for PhD candidates to consider so they can present and think more deeply about reflexivity in their theses.

RESUMO

Recent reports from the Institute of Medicine document the increase in the number of nurses enrolled in doctoral education preparing for nurse scientist and leadership roles in the transformation of health care. This means that many doctoral students will acquire a knowledge of the research process, learn how to review and critique relevant literature, select appropriate research designs, and with the guidance of their dissertation chair and committee, design and conduct high quality, scholarly research studies that culminate in successfully defended doctoral dissertations. The health care profession expects that these dissertations, which include quantitative, qualitative, or mixed methods, will contribute to the knowledge base of the nursing profession and advance improvement in clinical and public health outcomes in the populations served by the nursing profession. This article reviews the concept of rigor in research, the rationale for rigor, various approaches that increase rigor, and the associated concepts that strengthen a research study.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: In this study, we aimed to qualitatively evaluate the views to the Psychiatry specilization theses, variables affecting publishing of these, and the relationship with the academic career of authors of these theses in Turkey. METHOD: Theses were searched from the website of Higher Education Board Presidency National Dissertations Center using the terms "psychiatry, mental health and diseases". Only the theses with full texts were included in the study. The publications associated with these theses were searched using SCI and SCI-E, Google, Google Scholar and PubMed by using the names of authors and their advisors. RESULTS: We were able to find 910 theses. 748 of the 910 were completed in universities. The overall publication rate of the theses was 37.7%. 19.2% were indexed in PubMed, 28.5% in SCI and SCI-E and 31.9% in Google Scholar. Publication of a thesis was significantly associated with the field of research, the title of the advisor and whether the owner of the thesis had later become a faculty member. Residents who were trained at universities were more likely to publish as a first author. Being first author was associated with later academic career. In addition, those who continued their career as an academic continued to publish on a similar subject more than those who did not. CONCLUSIONS: In this study, the type of the research, title of the advisor, enrolling an academic career were associated with the publication of the theses. We hope our results would help better publication of the theses in the future.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: to discuss the paths taken by Brazilian Nursing in the development of terminological subsets of the International Classification for Nursing Practice. METHOD: documentary research, carried out in master's dissertations and doctoral theses, which developed terminological subsets, available at the Bank of Doctoral Theses and Master's Dissertations of the Under-graduation Personnel Improvement Coordination. The variables were analyzed were institution, year; academic level, type of health service, methodological approach, clientele, theoretical reference, validation of terms, cross mapping, modeling of new concepts, validation of statements, method used for elaboration, term collection, finalization and dissemination. RESULTS: 124 doctoral theses and master's dissertations were found, 91 were excluded and 33 were included, 23 (69.70%) of which were master's dissertations, with the highest production in 2014 (n=10; 30.30%), with emphasis on the Northeast (36.36%); the 'Primary Care' scenario, with six studies (18.18%); and the predominant clientele was cancer patients. As for the methodological characteristics, in 96% of the studies, the quantitative approach was used; in 2%, a qualitative approach; and 2% associated the quantitative and qualitative approaches. As for the type of study, 60% were methodological and 24% descriptive-exploratory, with the Horta model being the most used (36%). CONCLUSION: the paths are successful, yet still permeated by weaknesses in the validations and potentialities to standardize the language.
