RESUMO

Avicenna authored The Canon of Medicine, a principal medical textbook for over 600 years. Our primary goal is to systematically review and translate relevant portions of The Canon in its original Arabic and correlate to Sardo's 2014 translation, focusing on otolaryngology, to present an accurate representation of Avicenna's impact and highlight notable discrepancies. Secondarily, we aim to review the literature for citations discussing Avicenna's contributions to otolaryngology and identify misinterpretations. Notably, Avicenna may have described the shape of the cochlea 500 years before its believed discovery in humans by Eustachius (1552) and Falloppius (1561). There are also obscurities in Avicenna's descriptions of the etiology of epistaxis and airway management. It is essential to remain critical of historical texts and safeguard the accurate propagation of information to preserve the integrity of historical context and timelines of scientific advancement.

RESUMO

After outlining the life and works of interpreter Yoshio Gonnosuke, this paper introduces the manuscript witnesses of his hitherto unstudied comparative Dutch-Japanese syntax written in the mid-1820s, which was modelled on Pieter Weiland's Nederduitsche spraakkunst (1805). This is followed by a closer look at the process of compilation and publication of Philipp Franz von Siebold's "Epitome linguae japonicae," of which only the first part was published in 1826. Evidence is provided to confirm Yoshio's involvement in this work and to suggest that Yoshio's syntax was in fact intended to form the core of its unpublished second part.

RESUMO

The appropriate plot effectively conveys the author's conclusions to the readers. Journal of Korean Medical Science (JKMS) will provide a series of special articles to show you how to make consistent and excellent plots more easily. In this article, we will cover pyramid charts. A pyramid chart is a simple yet popular tool for looking at the structure of a population by age and gender. Other variables can also be applied. This article helps researchers use these charts more easily by introducing effective tools and explaining how to use them.

RESUMO

In this article, we employ simple descriptive methods in order to explore the peculiar behavior of the symbols in the Voynich Manuscript. Such an analysis reveals a group of symbols which are further analyzed for the possibility of being compounds (or ligatures), using a specifically developed method. The results suggest the possibility that the alphabet of the manuscript is a lot smaller, and steganographic type of encoding is proposed to explain the newly revealed properties.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: The author was asked to teach a new PhD course, Developing Literature Reviews. The course objective is to have students prepare a structured (e.g., integrative, systematic) literature review manuscript that is suitable for publication submission. METHOD: Course pedagogy and materials were created, including a novel literature review manuscript template. The template served as a guide for communicating essential section components of a rigorous and reproducible literature review manuscript and allowed for an iterative process and efficient faculty-student evaluation system to simulate the peer-review process. To measure student outcomes, standardized course evaluations were reviewed, and the number of students who were successful in disseminating manuscripts was recorded. RESULTS: Students' standardized course evaluations were high. Eighteen students published integrative or systematic literature reviews as first author. Eleven students have presented peer-reviewed abstracts at scientific conferences. CONCLUSION: The template successfully facilitates PhD student dissemination. The Doctor of Nursing Practice student pedagogy may also benefit from the template. [J Nurs Educ. 2021;60(2):111-115.].

RESUMO

Immigration has been considered a common human behavior, but it is usually the result of severe conditions that force people to leave their countries. For specialized physicians who have invested years of study, training, hard work, and money to establish a successful career, the decision to leave behind everything to start over is as difficult as for the rest of the people. Adapting to a new country requires a good deal of patience, persistence, and resilience to reinvent oneself, exploring and developing new areas, plus using knowledge and experiences previously acquired. This paper reflects the anxieties, fears, and hopes of a dermatologist driven by the dynamics of a migratory process. The reflections are framed with verses of the goddess Fortune, extracted from a medieval Codex, as a way to compare how Fortune's whims can change circumstances to keep us moving upward and downward during our lives.

RESUMO

There is more to theory in biology than replicating the results of experiments - the best theory papers help experimentalists to identify which of their results might be general and to plan a path through the maze of all possible future experiments.
