BACKGROUND: Triatoma garciabesi and T. guasayana are considered secondary vectors of Trypanosoma cruzi and frequently invade rural houses in central Argentina. Wing and head structures determine the ability of triatomines to disperse. Environmental changes exert selective pressures on populations of both species, promoting changes in these structures that could have consequences for flight dispersal. The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between a gradient of anthropization and phenotypic plasticity in flight-related traits. METHODS: The research was carried out in Cruz del Eje and Ischilín departments (Córdoba, Argentina) and included 423 individuals of the two species of triatomines. To measure the degree of anthropization, a thematic map was constructed using supervised classification, from which seven landscapes were selected, and nine landscape metrics were extracted and used in a hierarchical analysis. To determine the flight capacity and the invasion of dwellings at different levels of anthropization for both species, entomological indices were calculated. Digital images of the body, head and wings were used to measure linear and geometric morphometric variables related to flight dispersion. One-way ANOVA and canonical variate analysis (CVA) were used to analyze differences in size and shape between levels of anthropization. Procrustes variance of shape was calculated to analyze differences in phenotypic variation in heads and wings. RESULTS: Hierarchical analysis was used to classify the landscapes into three levels of anthropization: high, intermediate and low. The dispersal index for both species yielded similar results across the anthropization gradient. However, in less anthropized landscapes, the density index was higher for T. garciabesi. Additionally, in highly anthropized landscapes, females and males of both species exhibited reduced numbers. Regarding phenotypic changes, the size of body, head and wings of T. garciabesi captured in the most anthropized landscapes was greater than for those captured in less anthropized landscapes. No differences in body size were observed in T. guasayana collected in the different landscapes. However, males from highly anthropized landscapes had smaller heads and wings than those captured in less anthropized landscapes. Both wing and head shapes varied between less and more anthropogenic environments in both species. CONCLUSIONS: Results of the study indicate that the flight-dispersal characteristics of T. garciabesi and T. guasayana changed in response to varying degrees of anthropization.

PURPOSE: The aim of this study is to characterize lung cancer treatment clinical trials in Latin America before (January 2001-December 2011) and after (January 2012-December 2021) the organization of major Latin American oncology cooperative groups. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Interventional clinical trials were identified in ClinicalTrials.gov using the search terms "lung cancer," country filters for 20 Latin American countries, and study start dates January 1, 2001-December 31, 2011, and January 1, 2012-December 31, 2021. Clinical trials were categorized as either originating in Latin America (LA) or outside Latin America (non-LA) with participation of Latin American countries. Descriptive statistics, two-sided Z-scores, and chi-square analyses with 95% CIs were calculated. RESULTS: Overall, 273 clinical trials involving Latin American countries between 2001 and 2021 were identified. Comparing 2001-2011 with 2012-2021, there was an increase in total clinical trials (100 v 173; P < .001). Only 9% (26 of 273) of all trials were LA trials. There was a marked decrease in the proportion of LA trials (14% v 7%, P = .058) and estimated enrollment to LA trials (3,245 v 1,190 patients; P < .001). Recruiting of patients with EGFR (29% v 7%; P < .01) and KRAS (18% v 2%; P < .01) driver mutations also decreased. Trial participation was highest in Brazil, Mexico, Argentina, Chile, and Peru and increased over time: Brazil (61 v 108; 77% increase), Mexico (40 v 88; 120% increase), Argentina (50 v 78; 56% increase), Chile (25 v 57; 128% increase), and Peru (14 v 37; 164% increase). CONCLUSION: There was a significant increase in clinical trial participation by Latin American countries, from 2001-2011 to 2012-2021. However, there were few clinical trials which originated in Latin America or focused on patients with driver mutations.

The domestication process of the common bean gave rise to six different races which come from the two ancestral genetic pools, the Mesoamerican (Durango, Jalisco, and Mesoamerica races) and the Andean (New Granada, Peru, and Chile races). In this study, a collection of 281 common bean landraces from Chile was analyzed using a 12K-SNP microarray. Additionally, 401 accessions representing the rest of the five common bean races were analyzed. A total of 2543 SNPs allowed us to differentiate a genetic group of 165 accessions that corresponds to the race Chile, 90 of which were classified as pure accessions, such as the bean types 'Tórtola', 'Sapito', 'Coscorrón', and 'Frutilla'. Our genetic analysis indicates that the race Chile has a close relationship with accessions from Argentina, suggesting that nomadic ancestral peoples introduced the bean seed to Chile. Previous archaeological and genetic studies support this hypothesis. Additionally, the low genetic diversity (π = 0.053; uHe = 0.53) and the negative value of Tajima' D (D = -1.371) indicate that the race Chile suffered a bottleneck and a selective sweep after its introduction, supporting the hypothesis that a small group of Argentine bean genotypes led to the race Chile. A total of 235 genes were identified within haplotype blocks detected exclusively in the race Chile, most of them involved in signal transduction, supporting the hypothesis that intracellular signaling pathways play a fundamental role in the adaptation of organisms to changes in the environment. To date, our findings are the most complete investigation associated with the origin of the race Chile of common bean.

Isoetes candelariensis is a new species of Isoetaceae from Misiones, Argentina. This species is ephemeral, and grows on basaltic bedrock outcrop pools, in Urutau Reserve from Candelaria Department. This taxon differs from other aquatic Isoetes in this region by the unique combination of characters of its leaves, ligule, labium and megaspore ornamentation.

The type specimens of Austrodolops eremitae Blanchard, Doryctes ridiaschinae Brthes, and Hormiopius ptericoptophagus Blanchard were studied and reclassified according to the current classification of the subfamily Doryctinae. The monotypic genera Austrodolops Blanchard and Hormiopius Blanchard are treated as junior synonyms of Allorhogas Gahan (syn. nov.) and Heterospilus Haliday (syn. nov.) respectively. Examination of the gall associated species D. ridiaschinae shows that it belongs in the genus Allorhogas. All species are redescribed and illustrated and the following new combinations are proposed: Allorhogas eremitae (Blanchard) (comb. nov.), Allorhogas ridiaschinae (Brthes) (comb. nov.) and Heterospilus ptericoptophagus (Blanchard) (comb. nov.). Lectotypes are designated for all studied species and the genus Doryctes is excluded from the currently known Argentine fauna.

The study of the Heteroptera (Hemiptera) fauna of the El Impenetrable National Park, resulted in an inventory composed of: Alydidae (2 spp.), Aradidae (1 sp.), Belostomatidae (5 spp.), Berytidae (1 sp.), Blissidae (1 sp.), Coreidae (11 spp.), Corixidae (2 spp.), Geocoridae (1 sp.), Gerridae (1 sp.), Hebridae (1 sp.), Largidae (4 spp.), Lygaeidae (5 spp.), Miridae (17 spp.), Nabidae (1 sp.), Notonectidae (1 sp.), Oxycarenidae (1 sp.), Pachygronthidae (1 sp.), Pachynomidae (2 spp.), Pentatomidae (16 spp.), Pleidae (1 sp.), Pyrrhocoridae (1 sp.), Reduviidae (30 spp.), Rhopalidae (5 spp.), Rhyparochromidae (12 spp.), Saldidae (1 sp.), Scutelleridae (2 spp.), Tingidae (1 sp.), and Veliidae (1 sp.). These findings include six new records for the Argentinean fauna: Prytanes foedus (Stl), Saldula pallipes (Fabricius), Camirus brevilinea (Walker), Atopozelus opsimus Elkins, Doldina bicarinata Stl, Rocconota sextuberculata St and 39 new records for Chaco Province.

Two previously undescribed myxozoan species, Henneguya sardellae sp. n. and H. margaritae sp. n., found infecting connective tissues of the Neotropical characid fish Oligosarcus jenynsii (Günther) from Argentina are morphologically and molecularly characterised. Mature spores of H. sardellae sp. n. are ellipsoid, with two, straight and visibly fused caudal appendages cleaved at its blunt terminal end; measuring 33.5 ± 1.2 (30.9-35.5) µm in total length, spore body 17.5 ± 0.6 (16.3-18.6) µm, 7.8 ± 0.4 (7.0-8.8) µm wide and 6.9 ± 0.2 (6.6-7.2) µm thick, with two elongated, unequally-sized polar capsules situated at anterior end, and 11-13 turns of polar tubules. Mature spores of H. margaritae sp. n. are pyriform, with two caudal appendages visible fused together and much longer than spore body, with unequal endings; measuring 35.9 ± 2.8 (29.2-40.7) µm in total length, spore body 11.5 ± 0.9 (9.2-13.0) µm long, 5.8 ± 0.4 (5.1-6.7) µm wide and 5.5 ± 0.2 (5.1-5.8) µm thick, with two polar capsules similar in size, pyriform polar capsules containing polar tubules with 4-5 coils. Both species showed a membraneous sheath surrounding the spore body and caudal appendages; in H. sardellae sp. n. this feature can deploy laterally. Phylogenetic analyses based on SSU rDNA sequences showed that H. sardellae sp. n. and H. margaritae sp. n. clustered with other myxobolids parasitising Characiformes in Brazil, Cichliformes in Mexico and Cyprinodontiformes in Mexico and the United States. The description of these two new species of Henneguya as the first described species of the genus that parasitise freshwater fish in Argentina highlights the importance of further research on the diversity and distribution of myxozoans in this region.

Bovine genital campylobacteriosis, caused by the gram-negative bacteria Campylobacter fetus venerealis, and bovine trichomonosis, caused by the parasite protozoan Tritrichomonas foetus, are venereal diseases that occur with long intercalving periods and abortion. The control of both diseases relies on microbiological testing and culling infected bulls. Vaccination and antibiotic treatment may help in controlling campylobacteriosis but are not recommended for trichomonosis control. Several regions of the world have active control programs for trichomonosis, not campylobacteriosis. In Argentina, the state of La Pampa aims to eradicate trichomonosis and campylobacteriosis by imposing annual diagnostic testing of every bull and slaughtering positive animals. Prior studies indicated a declining trend in the prevalence of campylobacteriosis and trichomonosis in La Pampa. It was also proposed that the prevalence of one disease could be estimated from the prevalence of the other. The purpose of this retrospective analysis of data gathered from 2008 to 2021 was to determine the La Pampa program's efficacy. Descriptive statistics were employed to determine the reason behind the correlation between tricomonosis and campylobacteriosis diagnostic results. The outcomes refute the notion that this program of venereal eradication was a success. Furthermore, an excess of false positives in both diagnoses may have contributed to the correlation between the prevalences of campylobactriosis and trichomonosis. The practice of killing animals without verifying positive results hinders the determination of disease prevalence and results in the death of numerous healthy animals.

BACKGROUND: Children with congenital heart disease present a higher frequency of cardiorespiratory arrest (CRA) than the general pediatric population. The epidemiology of CRA is not exactly known in our setting, nor are the mortality risk or the neurological evolution factors. OBJECTIVE: To describe the epidemiology and outcomes associated with pediatric cardiopulmonary resuscitation in a cardiovascular recovery unit. The primary endpoint was the survival to discharge and the secondary endpoints were the return to spontaneous circulation, the survival at 24 hours and the remote neurological condition. METHODS: Descriptive, prospective, longitudinal cohort study in children under 18 years of age who required cardiopulmonary resuscitation between 2016 and 2019. Demographic variables, characteristics of cardiopulmonary arrest, resuscitation and outcome were analyzed. An uni- and multivariate analysis was performed comparing survivors and deceased. RESULTS: Out of 1,842 hospitalized patients, 4.1% presented CRA. Fifty patients with complete records were analyzed. Seventy-eight percent (39) returned to spontaneous circulation with a high survival rate of 46%. Resuscitation > 6 min and the use of vasoactive drugs were predictors of mortality; 16/23 patients were followed up, 10 of them with normal development for age at 6 months, six had pervasive developmental disorder. CONCLUSIONS: 4.1% of patients presented CRA, with a rate of 3.4 CRA per 1,000 patient-days. Survival at hospital discharge (n = 50) was 46%. Resuscitation > 6 min and the use of vasoactive drugs were independent predictors of mortality. At six months, 63% had normal neurological development for age.
ANTECEDENTES: Los niños con cardiopatías congénitas experimentan paro cardiorrespiratorio (PCR) con mayor frecuencia que la población pediátrica general. Se desconoce la epidemiología exacta del PCR en nuestro medio, al igual que el riesgo de mortalidad y los factores que influyen en la evolución neurológica. OBJETIVO: Describir la epidemiología y los resultados asociados con la reanimación cardiopulmonar pediátrica en una unidad de recuperación cardiovascular. El criterio de valoración primario fue la supervivencia al momento del alta hospitalaria; los secundarios fueron el retorno de la circulación espontánea, la supervivencia a las 24 horas y la condición neurológica en el largo plazo. MÉTODO: Estudio de cohorte longitudinal, descriptivo, prospectivo, en menores de 18 años que requirieron reanimación cardiopulmonar entre 2016 y 2019. Se analizaron las variables demográficas y las características del paro cardiorrespiratorio y de la reanimación, así como su resultado. Se realizaron análisis de una y múltiples variables para comparar a los pacientes sobrevivientes con los fallecidos. RESULTADOS: De los 1,842 pacientes internados, el 4.1% experimentó PCR. Se analizaron 50 pacientes con expedientes completos. Se logró el retorno de la circulación espontánea en el 78% (39), con una supervivencia alta del 46%. La reanimación > 6 min y el uso de fármacos vasoactivos fueron factores predictivos de mortalidad; se realizó el seguimiento de 16/23 pacientes, 10 de ellos con desarrollo normal para la edad luego de seis meses, seis tenían trastorno generalizado del desarrollo. CONCLUSIONES: El 4.1% de los pacientes presentó un PCR, con una tasa de 3.4 PCR por 1,000 días-paciente. La supervivencia al egreso hospitalario (n = 50) fue del 46%. La reanimación > 6 min y la utilización de fármacos vasoactivos fueron factores predictivos independientes de mortalidad. Luego de seis meses, el 63% tenía desarrollo neurológico normal para la edad.

BACKGROUND: Dengue represents a major public health problem in the Americas in general, and in Posadas (Misiones, Argentina) in particular. This study aimed to assess the seroprevalence of dengue virus infection, analyze associated factors, and determine the proportion of asymptomatic cases. METHODS: This prospective cross-sectional study took place from November 2017 to April 2019 in the High Complexity Laboratory of Misiones, at the School Hospital Dr. Ramón Madariaga in Posadas. A random sample of 301 adults (≥ 15 years) was selected from the electoral registry and stratified by geographical area of residence. Sociodemographic, clinical, and laboratory data were collected by means of a survey and serology. Results were analyzed using multivariable logistic regression. RESULTS: The median age of the sample was 33 years; 66% were women, and 46.5% had completed at least secondary school. Anti-dengue IgG antibodies were present in 40.2% of the sample (95% confidence interval [CI] 34.5-45.9%), including 90% of those who reported dengue and 20.5% who did not (odds ratio [OR] 33.25, 95% CI 15.46-71.51, p < 0.001). In the multivariable analysis, adjusted for age, group, gender, and vaccination against yellow fever, seropositivity was associated with having relatives with dengue (adjusted OR 3.96, 95% CI 2.18-7.23; p < 0.001). CONCLUSION: Seroprevalence for dengue in Posadas was higher than estimates based on the notification records, and there was a high proportion of asymptomatic cases. Educational level and having a family member who had suffered from dengue were associated with positive serology.

Following an Argentine Hemorrhagic Fever (AHF) outbreak in the early 1990s, a rodent survey for Junín virus, a New World Clade B arenavirus, in endemic areas of Argentina was conducted. Since 1990, INEVH has been developing eco-epidemiological surveillance of rodents, inside and outside the Argentine Hemorrhagic Fever endemic area. Samples from rodents captured between 1993 and 2019 that were positive for Arenavirus infection underwent Sanger and unbiased, Illumina-based high-throughput sequencing, which yielded 5 complete and 88 partial Mammarenaviruses genomes. Previously, 11 genomes representing four species of New World arenavirus Clade C existed in public records. This work has generated 13 novel genomes, expanding the New World arenavirus Clade C to 24 total genomes. Additionally, two genomes exhibit sufficient genetic diversity to be considered a new species, as per ICTV guidelines (proposed name Mammarenavirus vellosense). The 13 novel genomes exhibited reassortment between the small and large segments in New World Mammarenaviruses. This work demonstrates that Clade C Mammarenavirus infections circulate broadly among Necromys species in the Argentine Hemorrhagic Fever endemic area; however, the risk for Clade C Mammarenavirus human infection is currently unknown.

BACKGROUND: Chagas disease (CD), caused by the parasite Trypanosoma cruzi, is the most important endemic anthropozoonosis in Argentina. Since 2010, the World Health Organization has highlighted the urgent need to validate diagnostic systems that allow rapid detection of T. cruzi, infection in primary healthcare centers. Serological rapid diagnostic tests (RDTs) for T. cruzi, infection could be used to improve case management, as RDTs do not require specialized laboratories or highly trained staff to use them. We aimed to generate unbiased performance data of RDTs in Argentina, to evaluate their usefulness for improving T. cruzi, diagnosis rates. METHODS AND PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: This is a retrospective, laboratory-based, diagnostic evaluation study to estimate the clinical sensitivity/specificity of four commercially available RDTs for T. cruzi, using the Chagas disease diagnostic algorithm currently used in Argentina as the reference standard. In total, 400 serum samples were tested, 200 from individuals with chronic T. cruzi infection and 200 from individuals not infected with T. cruzi. All results were registered as the agreement of at least two operators who were blinded to the reference standard results. The sensitivity estimates ranged from 92.5-100% (95% confidence interval (CI) lower bound 87.9-98.2%); for specificity, the range was 76-96% (95% CI lower bound 69.5-92.3%). Most RDTs evaluated showed performances comparable with the reference standard method, showing almost perfect concordance (Kappa 0.76-0.92). CONCLUSIONS: Our study demonstrates that, under controlled laboratory conditions, commercially available RDTs for CD have a performance comparable to the Argentinian diagnostic algorithm, which is based on laboratory-based serological tests. For the next stage of our work, the RDTs will be evaluated in real-world settings.

The objective of this study was to estimate the prevalence of diabetes mellitus (DM) and cardiovascular risk factors in a rural population in the province of San Luis, Argentina. Cross-sectional study developed between September and November 2017 with 18-year-old inhabitants and more than four towns in the Juan Martín de Pueyrredón department, San Luis. The participants answered questions by self-report on sociodemographic aspects, habits, psychosocial and risk factors for non-communicable diseases; physical measurements, FINDIRSC questionnaire and blood sample extraction were performed. Univariate estimates stratified by sex with their 95% confidence interval (95%CI) were obtained. We worked with sample expansion factors; crude and adjusted prevalences were calculated. The population consisted of 424 men (52.5%, 95%CI: 46.0-58.9) and 384 women (47.5%, 95%CI: 41.1-54.0). The adjusted prevalences for both sexes (by self-report) were: DM 11.8% (95%CI: 8.2-15.4); arterial hypertension (AHT): 35.5% (95% CI: 31.0-40.1); high cholesterol: 20.3% (CI 16.0-24.7). Males had significantly higher desirable HDL cholesterol and elevated blood pressure than females; women abdominal obesity in greater magnitude. 16.4% (95% CI: 11.0 - 23.6) had a high-very high risk of developing type 2 DM in the next 10 years. The adjusted prevalences of DM, hypertension, and high cholesterol were lower than those of the urban population of the province of San Luis. We highlight the pioneering contribution of this work to the knowledge of the health profile of rural communities in Argentina.
El objetivo de este estudio fue estimar la prevalencia de diabetes mellitus (DM) y factores de riesgo cardiovascular en una población rural de la provincia de San Luis, Argentina. Estudio transversal desarrollado entre septiembre y noviembre de 2017 con habitantes de 18 años y más de cuatro localidades del departamento Juan Martín de Pueyrredón, San Luis. Los participantes respondieron preguntas por autorreporte sobre aspectos sociodemográficos, hábitos, factores psicosociales y de riesgo para enfermedades no transmisibles; se realizaron mediciones físicas, cuestionario FINDIRSC y extracción de muestras de sangre. Se obtuvieron estimaciones univariadas estratificadas por sexo con su intervalo de confianza del 95% (IC95%). Se trabajó con factores de expansión de la muestra; se calcularon prevalencias crudas y ajustadas. La población estuvo constituida por 424 varones (52,5%, IC95%: 46,0-58,9) y 384 mujeres (47,5%, IC95%: 41,1-54,0). Las prevalencias ajustadas para ambos sexos (por autorreporte) fueron: DM 11,8% (IC95%: 8,2-15,4); hipertensión arterial (HTA): 35,5% (IC95%: 31,0-40,1); colesterol elevado: 20,3% (IC 16,0-24,7). Los varones tuvieron colesterol HDL deseable y tensión arterial elevada en una proporción significativamente superior a las mujeres; las mujeres obesidad abdominal en mayor magnitud. El 16,4 % (IC95%: 11,0 - 23,6) ostentó riesgo alto-muy alto de desarrollar DM tipo 2 en los próximos 10 años. Las prevalencias ajustadas de DM, HTA y colesterol elevado fueron inferiores a la de la población urbana de la provincia de San Luis. Destacamos la contribución pionera de este trabajo al conocimiento del perfil de salud de las comunidades rurales de Argentina.

INTRODUCTION: Current recommendations for cardiovascular disease (CVD) prevention are guided CVD risk classification. This study aims to analyze the level of compliance with pharmacological and non-pharmacological recommendations outlined in the World Health Organization (WHO) CVD prevention clinical practice guideline within the general population of two cities in Argentina. METHODS: We analyzed the compliance with preventive recommendations from the WHO 2007 Guidelines for Management of Cardiovascular Risk in two cities of Argentina participating in the CESCAS population-based study in the Southern Cone of Latin America. RESULTS: 3990 participants were included. Considering the WHO recommendations, the use of antiplatelet medication was 5.6% (95% CI 3.5, 8.9) in primary prevention and 20.5% (95%= CI 16.0, 25.9) in secondary prevention. Regarding lipid-lowering medication, it was 6.7% (CI 95%= 4.4, 10.1) and 15.4% (CI 95%= 11.6, 20.1), respectively. As per non-pharmacological recommendations in the general population: low intake of fruit and vegetables was 78.4% (CI 95%= 76.8, 79.9); low physical activity was 26.9% (CI 95%= 25.3, 28.5), current cigarette smoking was 28.3% (CI 95%= 26.6, 30.0), overweight/obesity was 73.9% (CI 95%= 72.3, 75.6), and excessive alcohol intake was 2.6% (CI 95%= 2.1, 3.4). CONCLUSIONS: It was observed a significantly low compliance with pharmacological and non-pharmacological recommendations for CVD prevention in the general population of two cities in Argentina. Urgent efforts are needed to improve compliance to cardiovascular preventive recommendations promoted by CPG, especially in Low- and Middle- Income Countries.

Introduction: COVID-19 vaccination aids pandemic limitation. In Argentina, three vaccines are approved, and healthcare workers are priorized (HCWs). The aim was to determine the effectiveness of COVID-19 vaccines, analyzing change in Immunoglobulin G levels and the incidence of new COVID-19 cases up to 12 months after the second dose. Methods: Prospective cohort of HCWs between March 2021- 2022. COVIDAR IgG test was used to measure antibodies. A mixed-effects model was employed to compare the levels of immunoglobulin G at different time points, Kaplan Meier was used to estimate incident COVID-19 cases. Results: 82 participants were included Adverse events were frequent but mild. All participant showed positive antibody at 12 months. Antibodies levels showed an increase one year after 2nd dose. Sinopharm took a long time to yield positive results. More than half of the people had mild COVID-19 disease. Conclusion: COVID-19 vaccines are safe and effective.
Introducción: La vacunación COVID-19 ayuda a limitar la pandemia. En Argentina, se aprobaron tres vacunas y se priorizó a los trabajadores de la salud (TDS). El objetivo fue determinar la efectividad de las vacunas COVID-19, analizando el cambio en los niveles de Inmunoglobulina G y la incidencia de nuevos casos de COVID-19 hasta 12 meses después de la segunda dosis. Métodos: Cohorte prospectiva de TDS entre marzo de 2021 y 2022. Se utilizó la prueba COVIDAR IgG para medir los anticuerpos. Se empleó un modelo de efectos mixtos para comparar los niveles de inmunoglobulina G en diferentes puntos temporales, se utilizó Kaplan Meier para estimar los casos de COVID-19 incidentes. Resultados: se incluyeron 82 participantes. Los eventos adversos fueron frecuentes pero leves. Todos los participantes mostraron anticuerpos positivos a los 12 meses. Los niveles de anticuerpos mostraron un aumento un año después de la segunda dosis. Sinopharm tardó mucho tiempo en arrojar resultados positivos. Más de la mitad de las personas tuvieron una enfermedad leve de COVID-19. Conclusión: Las vacunas COVID-19 son seguras y efectivas.

Background: Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) drug resistance is a major cause of treatment failure in children and adolescents infected with the virus. Objectives: The objectives of the study are to investigate HIV drug resistance (HIVDR) in patients who attended a referral care center in Argentina over a 15-year period and to compare mutational patterns between HIV-1 polsequences characterized as B or BF recombinants. Methods: Individual resistance-associated mutations (RAMs) (to protease and reverse transcriptase inhibitors) were identified according to IAS-USA guidelines in 374 HIV-1-infected children and adolescents. HIV-1 subtype was characterized by phylogenetic and recombination analysis using MEGA5.1 and Simplot. Poisson linear regression was used to model the dynamics of the RAMs over time. Results: The prevalence of RAMs to protease inhibitors (R2 = 0.52, p = 0.0012) and nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors (R2 = 0.30, p = 0.0225) decreased over time. HIVDR to non-nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors remained moderate to high, ranging between 33% and 76%. BF recombinants showed a higher frequency of thymidine analog mutation 1 RAMs profile and I54V mutation. Conclusion: In Argentina, HIVDR observed in children and adolescents has decreased over the past 15 years, regardless of the viral subtype. (REV INVEST CLIN. 2024;76(1):29-36).

Pesticide contamination and its adverse effects on native freshwater species continue to be a worldwide major concern, mainly in developing countries. Passive biomonitoring of pesticide pollution in shallow lakes may be achieved by the simultaneous use of fish and wetland plants. Thus, the present study aimed to evaluate the occurrence of current-use pesticides in the surface water of a shallow lake of the Austral Pampas region (Buenos Aires Province, Argentina) surrounded by intensive agricultural activities and its relationship with a battery of biomarkers, including oxidative stress and genotoxicity, in two native species, the fish Oligosarcus jenynsii and the macrophyte Bidens laevis. A total of 26 pesticide residues were analyzed, and the main ones detected were glyphosate and its metabolite aminomethylphosphonic acid (AMPA), chlorpyrifos, and imidacloprid. In O. jenynsii, hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) content in the liver increased with chlorpyrifos occurrence, while malondialdehyde (MDA) levels in the brain and liver increased with the presence of both chlorpyrifos and glyphosate. In B. laevis, H2O2 and MDA levels in leaves and roots increased with AMPA occurrence. Also, leaf H2O2 contents and root MDA levels increased with chlorpyrifos concentration. In contrast, catalase and peroxidase activities in roots decreased with AMPA and chlorpyrifos occurrence. In both species, mainly H2O2 and MDA levels demonstrated their sensitivity to be used as biomarkers in the biomonitoring of current-use pesticide pollution in shallow lakes. Their use may provide information to plan strategies for environmental conservation by government institutions or decision-makers, and to assess the biota health status.
