An analysis of the radiological appearances in a skeletal survey of 48 patients in Jamaica with sickle cell beta thalassaemia is presented. The appearances are similar to those in homozygous sickle cell disease and SC disease and a confident distinction between the conditions on radiological grounds alone is likely. (AU)

Spinal manipulation and traction were used in the treatment of 105 cases who presented with pain in the neck, head and shoulder (35 cases), thorax (14 cases), lumbosacral region (56 cases). In 5 cases the original dignosis of a cartilaginous displacement was erroneous and the patients derived neither benefit nor harm. Of 100 cases correctly diagnosed, 95 had limitation of movement at the affected spinal joint. The age of the patients ranged from 18 to 79 years with the maximun incidence between 40 and 45 years. Of the 100 patients correctly diagnosed, 72 obtained complete lasting relief, 9 obtained only partial relief and required additional therapy, 11 were relieved immediately but were lost to follow-up. In 8 cases manipulative treatment was regarded as wholly unsuccessful (AU)

Two cases of benign osteoblastic tumors of the spine, occurring in young patients, and presenting as expanding osteolytic lesions with some central calcification and ossification, are described. It is suggested that they present a condition allied to, but usefully separated from, osteoid osteoma of bone. The name osteogenic fibroma of bone, proposed by Lichtenstien for this type of case, is accepted (Summary)
