RESUMO

The morphology and histology of the post-pharyngeal part of the gastro-intestinal tract of the ferret were studied. The oesophagus was a distensible muscular tube. Its mucosa was lined by keratinizing stratified squamous epithelium. The muscle coat was striated throughout except near the cardia. A cardiac sphincter was present. The stomach was morphologically and histologically very similar to that of man. The duodenum appeared C-shaped and had a mesoduodenum. The bile and pancreatic ducts formed a common duct in the wall of the duodenum. The sphincter of Oddi was present. Brunner's glands were present in the pyloric part of the stomach, and up to the common opening of the bile and pancreatic ducts in the duodenum. The intestine could be differentiated macroscopically and microscopially into the small and large intestines. The small intestine distal to the duodenum formed coiled tubes suspended by a mesentery. It was not possible morphologically to differentiate jejunum and ileum. Histologically, however, the distal portion was identifiable as ileum by increasing numbers of goblet cells, and Peyer's patches in the submucosa. Villi were present in the mucosa throughout but there was no spiral or circular fold. The larg intestine was a straight dilated tube lying in the left flank and extending from the splenic flexure to the anus in the median plane. It was suspended by a short mesocolon except for the rectal portion in the pelvis. The ileo-colic junction was differentiated morphologically and histologically. There was no caecum, appendix, taeniae coli or appendices epiploicae. The large intestine was not differentiated topographically into ascending, transverse and descending colon (AU)

RESUMO

A morphologic investigation on 100 cervices removed at autopsy from negro Jamaian women at different ages showed that columnar epithelium was frequently located on the portio vaginalis at all ages. The absence of this phenomenon in some fetal cervices supports the hpothesis of embryologic displacement rather than stimulation by maternal estrogens. Squamous metaplasia was common at all ages, even in the fetus; it showed little relationship to chronic inflammation, but the high frequency in post-pubertal cases (80 percent) could have some relationship to the high incidence of cervical cancer in Jamaica. Chronic inflammation was not observed in the fetal cervix but occurred in most infants in whom it was attributed to congenital "erosion". However, the cervices of children revealed a marked discrepancy between the presence of "erosion" and the degree and frequency of chronic inflamation (83 percent). This change is unexplained and requires further study (AU)

RESUMO

Membranous glomerulonephropathy with crescents. A case is reported in which typical histological features of idiopathic membranous glomerulonephropathy co-existed with atypical glomeruli showing cellular epithelial crescents in addition to diffuse basement-membrane thickening. These features were seen in a renal biopsy specimen taken during rapidly progressive deterioration of renal function in a patient previously known to have mild ankle edema for four years

RESUMO

Ninety-nine patients with suspicious and positive cervical cytology smears seen at the University Hospital during the period 1966-1970 have been investigated. Symptoms referrable to cervical pathology were present in only one-third of the cases, and only a small number of the cervices showed a clinical suspicion of cancer. There was good overall cytohistological correlation except for the cases with Class IIIB smears a high proportion (80 percent) of which showed malignancy in the biopsy material. Treatment regimes for the different pre-clinical lesions are discussed. A disturbing feature was that only 36 percent of patients treated by conization alone attended for cytological follow-up. RESUMO

Two unusual cases of mural endocarditis are described. The first was that of a 13-year-old boy with infected burns of the legs. Autopsy revealed mural vegetations in both ventricles and cytomegalic viral inclusions were demonstrated in the vegetations, heart muscle, and endothelial cells of various organs. This appears to be the first reported case of cytomegalic inclusion viral endocarditis. A review of the literature revealed only six previous reports of cytomegalic viral myocarditis, which was also present in this case. The second case was that of a 4-year-old girl with bronchiectasis. Autopsy revealed mural vegetations in the right ventricle. Group C beta-hemolytic steptococcus was isolated from th mural vegetations, as well as from the diseased lungs. Only two previous reports of endocarditis caused by this organism are found in the literature (AU)
