The Ministry of Health & Wellness joins the world in celebrating International Infection Prevention and Control Week from October 17 to 21, 2022, under the theme "Spread Prevention - not infection!" The theme was chosen during the global pandemic as a call to be more proactive to prevent infections rather than being reactive and having to treat infections.

The paper reviews the changing global landscape of infectious diseases and outlines the history and epidemiology of selected recent epidemics that have relevance to human and animal health in the Caribbean area; specifically, West Nile encephalitis, bovine spongiform encephalopathy, foot-and-mouth disease, avian and canine influenza, classical swine fever and bluetongue. While it is not possible to predict which new diseases will emerge over the next 10 years to affect the Caribbean countries, one can identify trends. It is safe to say that new diseases will emerge. The region has an excellent record of disease prevention and eradication, but this should not be a justification for celebration and relaxation. Various factors continue to place the Caribbean at risk, ranging from the increased volume of trade and tourism in the region through to global warming. Diseases originating elsewhere in the world could easily involve the region.

AIM: To report the results of a survey of all percutaneous injuries occurring in 2003-2004 to staff and students at the dental school in Trinidad. METHOD: Data were collected via 163 questionnaires administered to all dental surgery assistants, the current clinical students (years 3, 4 & 5), the interns, part-time and full-time academic staff. RESULTS: A 71% response rate was obtained. The number of persons reporting one or more sharps injuries at the dental school was 42 (37%). Of these, 17 (40%) were percutaneous. Needlesticks and periodontal scaler injuries were the most common. There was no significant correlation (p>0.05) between injury and gender, age group, dominant hand or needle recapping technique. 75% of respondents described their concern of contracting a blood-borne disease from a sharps injury as "high" and 59% of the respondents followed the school's recommended protocol following the injury. 50% of the injuries among the students and interns were not reported. CONCLUSIONS: A more rigorous programme of risk management with respect to sharps injuries needs to be designed and implemented at the school. There is also a need to improve surveillance of and reduce the underreporting of these injuries

Lymphatic filariasis and malaria are endemic in Guyana, South America. To determine the prevalence of concomitant infections, we conducted a 1-year survey of febrile patients attending the malaria (day) and filariasis (night) clinics in Georgetown. In all, 1278 thick blood smears were collected; 769 for filariasis, of which 103 were positive for Wucheria bancrofti, and three for both W. bancrofti and malaria parasites; and 509 for malaria, 21 of which tested positive for malaria and 17 for both malaria and filariasis. The age groups and sex of the infected persons with malaria and W. bancrofti are descibed. These results suggest that the incidence of concomitant infections in Guyana may be quite low but efforts should be made to reduce the disease burden in Georgetown, Guyana (AU)
