RESUMO

A primary buccal mucosal malignant melanoma with metastases to submandibular and cervical lymph nodes is described in a four-year-old black girl. Mucosal melanomas are extremely rare in the 1st and 2nd decades, there being only three cases in this age group reported in major published series to date. Origin from a melanocytic naevus is a possibility in this patient in view of the histological features of the primary tumour (AU)

RESUMO

During a 10-year period 1958-67, 151 tumors were noted in children under 15 years of age in Jamaica. This comprised 2.9 percent of all malignant tumors observed. Leukemia was the most common form of cancer. The incidence of retinoblastomas was high and surpassed incidences of neuroblastomas and of Wilms' tumors. Kaposi's sarcoma was not observed, and hepatocellular carcinoma was extremely rare. The tumor incidence pattern in Jamaica therefore largely resembles that in the United States and in Western Europe. It contrasts significantly with that in Uganda and in Western Nigeria. This merits attention, since over 90 percent of the Jamaican population is either pure Negro or of predominantly Negro descent as a result of importation from West Africa in former days. (Summary)

RESUMO

Malignant melanoma comprise 1.3 per cent of all cancers in Jamaica and 13 per cent of all skin cancers. In 62 per cent of cases the lesion develops on the sole of the foot. Of 39 cases seen at the University Hospital of the West Indies between 1953 and 1965, there are only two known five-year survivors. The role of trauma in the aetiology of the disease and its influence on prognosis are discussed. Although melanoma should not be considered a hopeless disease as it has been in the past, local factors tends to influence the outlook in Jamaica adversely (AU)
