RESUMO

Skin manifestations are a common feature of HTLV-1 associated disorders and of HTLV-1 infection itself. These include the lymphomatous skin infiltrates in adult T-cell lymphoma/leukaemia, most commonly manifesting as persistent, generalised papules, nodules and plaques with later ulceration, acquired ichthyosis and xeroderma in HAM/TSP, infective dermatitis of children, dermatomyositis, crusted (Norwegian) scabies, psoriasiform rashes which may precede one of the more serious disease associations, and possibly also seborrhoeic dermatitis. Disorders typically associated with immunosuppression such as disseminated herpes zoster, and ulcerative non-healing herpes simplex may also be seen occasionally both in ATK as well as in other wise asymptomatic HTLV-1 infection (AU)

RESUMO

Of sixteen patients with MCTD, 10 62 percent) presented with the clinical features of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) and 6 (37 percent) with SLE-scleroderma. Ninety-four per cent had a speckled antinuclear factor pattern and 100 percent had IgG deposits in a speckled pattern within the epidermal cell nuclei of the skin. Seventy per cent of these patients had nRNP antibodies. These characteristics are more typical of the mixed connective tissue syndrome than of SLE or scleroderma. The low incidence of Raynaud's phenomenon in our group of patients (18 percent) with MCTD is probably due to the tropical climate. The IgM deposits in the skin of a significant number (67 percent) of the patients with the clinical picture of SLE-scleroderma probably represent an early stage in the development of the disease. The significance of high serum IgA in the clinically diagnosed SLE group is not understood and is now being further investigated. This study strongly suggests that laboratory investigations are of primary importance in distinguishing MCTD from SLE and other forms of collagen vascular diseases (AU)

RESUMO

It is thought that this simple and useful procedure can give valuable information on the state of carbohydrate absorption. Details of the determination are presented and the rationale of the test discussed. Diseases associated with defection absorption, such as celiac disease, Whipple's disease, scleroderma, pernicious anemia and certain post-operative states are illustrated. It is suggested that the presence of ascites may account for the low values encountered in some patients with hepatic cirrhosis (AU)
