RESUMO
Infections of the hand have potentially disastrous consequences. Their significance must not be under estimated; and in many instances, management should be given by those skilled in hand surgery. Chronic induration and swelling produce irreversible stiffness. The destruction of tendons, joints, or bones cuase loss of function. Generally, these longterm complications are avoided by: (1) a high index of suspicion, (2) careful and frequent re-evaluation, (3) appropriate early and adequate drainage of abscesses supplemented with antibiotic therapy and (4) early elevation and immobilization, with graduated, increased activity at the appropriate time (AU)
