The incidence, aspect and course of leg ulcers in a well studied group of sickle cell anaemia patients is presented. The exact aetiology of the ulcers remains obscure. The different methods of treatment are discussed. The results of the treatment are in general unsatisfactory. Skin graft should be attempted only after careful study of the history of the ulcer, bearing in mind that the incidence of recurrences is very high. (AU)

It is noted that whilst death from venomous snake bites in this area is not common, serious permanent disability may occur. The lesions which may follow venomous bites are described and the management of the late complications discussed. Emergency treatment is not considered. The importance of early grafting in the prevention of permanent disability where there is serious tissue distruction, is emphasised. (AU)
