RESUMO

Myerson Duracetal, was used for the fabrication of Obturator Prostheses in four (4) patients. The steps in fabrication are outlined. The patients' perception of function as assessed using the Obturator Function Scale (Table 1) is also presented. Despite technical challenges, Myerson Duracetal was successfully used in fabrication of light, stable, retentive, aesthetic prostheses which could be adapted to the evolving defects.

RESUMO

Introduction : The School of Dentistry undertakes the training of dental students, where they provide fixed dental prostheses such as crowns bridges and onlays to patients of the dental polyclinic. The aim of this study was to determine the patient satisfaction with their ixed prostheses and the quantity of remakes at the School of Dentistry polyclinic during the period 2008-2012. Methods : The lab records of ixed prosthetic work during the period 2008-2012 were analyzed. Patients who received treatment during this period were contacted via telephone for a structured interview via a questionnaire. Results : Ninety-six (96) patients were contacted via telephone and 72% of patients were female. Fifty-six (56) crowns and onlays, 22 conventional bridges and 18 resin-retained bridges were provided for patients. Ninety-six (96%) of patients were satisied with the aesthetics (appearance) of their prosthesis immediately after itting and 90.7 % were still satisied with the appearance at the time of interview. 79.2% of prostheses were still in place at the time of interview but patients reported that 18% of crowns failed, 22.7% of conventional bridges and 27.8% of resin-retained bridges had failed. Fifteen (15%) of the ixed prostheses were remade. However, the majority of patients (99 %) were overall satisied with their services at the School of Dentistry in Trinidad. Conclusion : Patients are generally satisied with the ixed prosthetic work delivered at the School of Dentistry polyclinic and highly satisied with the services provided. The amount of remakes whilst small can be reduced with more stringent quality assurance measures.

RESUMO

This paper describes a technique for replacing an upper permanent central incisor immediately upon extraction of a non-salvable tooth without the use of a provisional denture. The preferred treatment of this type of case is the wearing of an interim denture during the period of bone remodelling and healing after the extraction, which can be up to four months. Many patients find the extra cost and inconvenience of having to adapt to an interim prosthesis objectionable. A method of fabrication and the delivery of the definite prosthesis as an immediate replacement for an extracted anterior tooth is described. (AU)

RESUMO

A review of the literature reveals that the use of biomaterials in skeletal repair has generated considerable interest in recent years. Current strategies used to treat osseous defects achieve the goals of maintaining and establishing bony contours and restoring mechanical function. A ideal material used in the replacement of lost bone tissue should exhibit bioactivity. This would allow a favourable tissue response and avoid the unfavorable fibrous encapsulation often associated with synthetic biomaterials. A novel material that exhibits this bioactivity is a bioactive glass called Biogran. Biogran consists of bioactive glass granules of a narrow size range (300-355um). Its unique properties enable it to induce bone formation, thereby making it osteconductive in nature. Extensive laboratory as well as clinical studies have been conducted using this novel material. A variety of the clinical applications are reported.(AU)
