RESUMO

The synthesis of phosphoenol pyruvate, the first committed step in gluconeogenesis, was examined in guinea pig mitochondria. The effect of short and long chain fatty acids and ketone bodies on phosphoenal pyruvate synthesis from Krevs cycle intermediate was measured. Long chain fatty acids and acetoacetate increased phosphoenol pyruvate synthesis. Short chain fatty acids depressed the synthesis. Because the physiological level of long chain fatty acid and ketone bodies is increased in conditions of increased gluconeogenesis to wit, starvation and diabetes, a theory is put forward which seeks to explain how fatty acids and ketone bodies trigger off and control the increased glucose synthesis(AU)

RESUMO

Blood pyruvate and O-ketoglutarate were measured in seven children while they were suffering from protein-calorie malnutrition and again after complete recovery. There was no change in pyruvate or O-ketoglutarate with clinical recovery. The data are interpreted to mean that there is no metabolic block in the oxidation of pyruvate via the Krebs cycle. Also, normal levels of O-ketoglutarate might indicate that there was no severe derangement of hepatic excretory function in the children studied. (Summary)
