RESUMO

Specific health problems in Suriname include high prevalence of infections, mostly gastrointestinal infections in young children, malaria and injuries due to violence. The public health care and medical and surgical training are hampered by a lack of funds, as are most things in the country. Relatively much of the surgery in Paramaribo University Hospital in 1991-1998 was performed because of complications of a diabetic foot (128.17 percent) and breast lessions (76.10 percent). No scientific research is being carried out either in the hospital or at the Faculty of Anton de Kom University. Retrospective registration of operations may give a new impulse to scientific research. (AU)

RESUMO

Two evaluation studies were carried out in 1995 and 1997. The first evaluation assessed tile effectiveness of the Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner's education program and its impact on mental health and psychiatry in Belize. The second study was done to determine if the mental health services were sustained in the country. Interviews and focus groups were used for data collection. In this paper the focus is on the findings from the focus groups. The findings show that the PNP's role performance was adequate, they have made an impact on the mental health services and the services are maintained (Au)

RESUMO

An educational program in another country establishes the mechanism for a variety of other possibilities. Faculty in the host country may provide the setting in which U.S. students can gain interculteral experience. Students may be able to conduct an independent study in the host or, if sufficient numbers are available, a U.S. course may be adapted and offered in the host country. If ample funds exist, a two-way student and/or faculty exchange may be possible, thereby adding to the curricula of both schools. Opportunities for joint research and publishing may also become available. For example, long term evaluation of the educational program and use of the program graduates in the host country would be of interest; research in the specialty areas of faculty may also be possible. The difficulties inherent in planning and implementing a program in another country are numerous; however, with foresight and ample time for planning, the benefits to both students and faculty in the host and home institutions can outweigh the drawbacks (AU)
