Five year health sector plan

Presents a plan aimed at guiding the development of the infrastructure, manpower, management and the delivery and provision of health services on the islands of Grenada, Carriacou and Petit Martinique. Objectives include decreasing mortality and morbidity and strengthening the initiatives of health for all by the year 2000. Details on the current health services; priority programmes for health development; health infrastucture and facilities; and details of legislation pertaining to health are given. Also outlines health policy statements of the Government. The general objectives of the plan are outlined and the strategies that should be used to achieve these goals are included

Community based education in Trinidad and Tobago: some views and suggestions

There is in our land at this time, a "crisis of confidence" that has "struck the panic button for many of our fellow citizens". What is needed urgently is change - some flexibility, a re-orienting of processes to respond more adequately to the realities of our current socio-economic circumstances. This was the theme of Mrs. Chen's address. Her specific area of concern was community-based education and training. She advocated a strategy which bypasses the rigid bureaucracy and specialization of the formal education and training system, and which goes into our communities and villages to make up for the shortfalls and the gaps in the "macro education and training policy measures." She affirmed that education and training is one of the surest means through which true development can be achieved; and further, that the resources available in Trinidad and Tobago in this sector, if applied with skill, imagination and compassion, can go a long way towards attaining our goal of alleviating poverty and improving the quality of life of our citizens (SYNOPSIS)

The development and functions of the five pilot health committees in the parish of St. Catherine, Jamaica

The study revealed that the health committee met mainly in schools and though the public was welcome to attend meetings, few took up the invitation. Even members serving on the committees were lax in their attendance at meetings, in so much that meetings were often cancelled for want of a quorum. (AU)

Changes in health pattern from an agricultural to an industrial community

As observed there is a marked improvement in the quality of life in the area, which is reflected in housing, employment, income, improved environmental sanitation, and a trend towards a better state of health in the community, as manifested by a decline in the infant mortality rate. Among some of the most striking features of the trend is the disappearance of communicable diseases, like yaws, hookworm, poliomyelitis, and the eradication of malaria. Further advances are made in the control of the physical environment.(AU)
