RESUMO

Medical education has shifted from the traditional face-toface method to virtual learning due to the COVID-19 pandemic, bringing with it many challenges. Medical students already experience high levels of stress due to may stressors such as excessive workload. This together with the new challenges encountered during virtual learning, such as technological barriers, can cause physiological distress which can affect the mental health of medical students.

RESUMO

Background: Most students are adept in using technology and have developed skills and confidence utilising SoMe for professional purposes. SoMe is used by both registered nurses and student nurses. Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate the professional use of SoMe by student nurses in Trinidad and Tobago, Jamaica and the UK to guide, support and develop implementation of effective and appropriate use of SoMe for professional development. Methods: An online cross-sectional survey was completed by student nurses from the three countries. Data were analysed using descriptive statistics. Results: The main reason for using social media among Caribbean participants was to watch videos or short clips whereas in UK it was downloading articles. Over 75% participants of all ages believed that social media was likely to help their career. There is no social media guidance for student nurses in Trinidad and Tobago and Jamaica. Conclusion: Our study demonstrated that social media is embedded in student nurses' professional development throughout their education, with some variation in their use by country. Despite the fundamental place that social media plays in student nurses' professional development, there is no national or international guidance on how student nurses should use social media for professional development.

RESUMO

Healthcare delivery and management have been revolutionised throughout the world because of the advent of modern computers and their coupling with diagnostic and treatment equipment. In the past, the impact of information technology was restricted to laboratory services and thought to be a good way of improving the general administration of hospitals, including the mechanisation of medical records and other aspects of patient administration. In some hospitals it has been possible for laboratories to send patients' results electronically to ward-based terminals. Telemedicine is the electronic transfer of medical data from one location to another. Applications include patient consultations, continuing medical education, interactive psychiatric and medical interviews, and the transmission of medical records or radiology images. Telemedicine is the medical answer to the fast-developing information technology that is sweeping through many walks of modern life(AU)

RESUMO

The explosive rate of urbanization and industrialization in Latin America and the Caribbean has aggravated serious wastewater disposal problems. To address those problems, sound pollution control programs are needed - programs that are founded on a firm legal base and supported by an institutional infrastructure suitable for their effective operation. Such programs should make a point of employing technologies that are appropriate for the climatic and economic conditions prevailing in the areas they serve. Promising methods for dealing with such problems include use of submarine outfalls with minimal pretreatment for cities along coasts and estuaries, maximum use of receiving waters' assimilative capacity (as determined through application of system management and water quality models), reuse of treated sewage effluent for irrigation, and the application of unconventional technology for urban slum sanitation. This article reviews those various approches and describes the ongoing collaboration between national governments and PAHO's Pan American Center for Sanitary Engineering and Environmental Sciences (CEPIS) in the areas of research, information exchange, human resources development, and institutional development for the purpose of establishing a viable strategy and framework through which these major problems can be confronted and perhaps ultimately over come.(AU)

RESUMO

The modification of social and physical environmental features of a society are hypothesized as producing changes in health status and such health related behavior as nutritional practices, perception of socialization environment. Preliminary study of two communities in Dominica, W.I. reveals such differences, generates hypotheses for later phases of the research. Some of the differences in ecology of the two communities will be regarded as intervening variables throughout this longitudinal study.(AU)
